One cannt discuss Chinese music withut mentining the guqin, ne f the fur arts—alng with g, calligraphy (书法) and painting. It first appeared ver 3, 000 years ag and stands fr China's sl musical instrument traditin.
At first, the guqin had nly five strings (弦), meaning the five elements (元素) f metal, wd, water, fire and earth. Later, in Zhu Dynasty, King Wen f Zhu added a sixth string fr his sn. King Wu f Zhu, added a seventh string t encurage his army t fight with the Shang.
Ambience was imprtant in playing the guqin. Usually, it was practised in a quiet setting and never fr public perfrmance. Ancient artists enjyed perfrming by a stream in the muntains. The sund f the guqin mixed with the eches (回音) frm the muntains, until the musician felt he was at ne with nature, Playing it in snw was als an enjyable activity fr ancient artists, wh believed the instrument was the purest f its kind in the wrld. Als, a night with mnlight was cnsidered wnderful fr playing the guqin. Wang Wei(701—761), a highly talented man f the Tang Dynasty liked playing it in a bamb frest n nights with mnlight mst.
Guqin pieces are usually three t eight minutes lng, with the lngest being Guangling Verse, which is 22 minutes lng. Other famus pieces include Plum Blssms in Three Mvements, Wild Geese Landing n the Sandbank and Eighteen Sngs f a Nmad Flute.
Nwadays, there are fewer than ne thusand well-trained guqin players and perhaps n mre than fifty living masters. The riginal number f several thusand pieces has greatly reduced t nly ne hundred wrks by tday. The guqin and its music were added t the list f the Intangible Cultural Heritage f Humanity (人类非物质文化遗产)in 2003.
