When I was a kid, my mom set aside some breakfast food for supper every now and then. I remember one night after a long, hard day at work, my mom placed a plate of eggs, sausage, and a plate of extremely burnt biscuits on the table. I waited to see if my dad would get annoyed.
All my dad did was to reach for the biscuits, smile at my mom and ask me how my day at school had been. I don't remember what I told him that night but I do remember watching him add butter and jelly on that ugly burnt biscuit and ate every bite of that thing. He never made a face nor uttered a word about it!
When I rose from the table that evening, I remember hearing my mom apologize to my dad for overcooking the biscuits and I will never forget what he said, “Honey, I love burnt biscuits every now and then.”
Later that night, I went to say good night to my daddy, and I wondered if he really liked his biscuits burnt. He wrapped me up in his arms and said gently, “Your mom put in a hard day at work today and she is really tired. Besides, a little burnt biscuit never hurt anyone!”
As I have grown older, I've thought about that many times. Life is full of imperfect things and imperfect people. Learning to accept each other's faults and choosing to celebrate each other's differences contribute to a healthy, growing, and lasting relationship. We could extend this philosophy to any relationship, such as a husband-wife, parent-child, or friendship. Don't put the key to your happiness in someone else's pocket. Keep it in your own. So, please pass me a biscuit, and yes, the burnt one will do just fine.
    1. How did the author's dad react to the burnt biscuit?
    A. He set it aside for breakfast.
    B. He ate butter and jelly instead.
    C. He uttered his complaints loudly.
    D. He ate it up as if nothing happened.
    2. Which of the following words can best describe the author's dad?
    A. Caring. B. Determined. C. Proud D. Hardworking.
    3. What does the author suggest people do in the last paragraph?
    A. Show understanding to imperfect things.
    B. Ask the children to respect their parents.
    C. Enjoy the over-cooked biscuits willingly.
    D. Make important decisions on your own.
    4. In which section of a magazine may this passage appear?
    A. History and culture. B. Family and relationship.
    C. Cuisine and health. D. Entertainment and sports.
    C
An Ontario teen is making waves by turning old fishing gear into new treasures. Since last year, Natalie, 15, has been taking lost or thrown — away fishing nets and rope and transforming them into bracelets, rope art, mats, baskets and necklaces.
Last year, Natalie was working on an assignment for her science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) class. As part of the assignment, she learned about “ghost nets”, which are fishing nets that have been left or lost in the ocean by people who fish.
“They have huge effects on our environment. They can kill coral reefs and many animals,” said Natalie. “46 percent of the Pacific garbage is ghost gear.” The Great Pacific Garbage is a huge collection of trash floating in the Pacific Ocean between Hawaii and California.
Natalie told her mom she wanted to do something to help. She got in touch with a handful of charities, including the Sea Protection Society and Coastal Action.
After getting some shipments of ghost nets and rope from those organizations, Natalie, with the help of her family, started turning the discarded gear into new artworks. “We've made bracelets, rope art, mats, baskets, and we've made necklaces, which also use beach glass in them,” she said. Natalie then started selling the artworks online, the crafty buying and selling website.
She donated all her profits-minus a small sum of change to cover supplies — to the charities that donated fishing supplies to her. She's also been donating all the income from her non-profit business, called Nautical Waters, to charity. Natalie said she hoped to continue her passion for ocean life, with plans to study marine biology in university.
    1. How did Natalie help with ghost nets?
    A. By turning them into artworks. B. By asking support from her mother.
    C. By collecting money from charities. D. By selling ghost nets at a good price.
    2. What made Natalie decide to do something with ghost nets?
    A. To collect supplies for the artworks. B. To prepare for her study in university.
    C. To protect coral reefs and marine animals. D. To complete an assignment for her STEM class.
    3. What docs the underlined word “discarded” in Paragraph 5 refer to?
    A. Polluted. B. Rare. C. Waste. D. Discovered.
    4. What is the best title for the text.
    A. Ghost Nets Ready for Sale B. Charities Make a Big Difference
    C. Natalie's Passion for Ocean Treasures D. Teen Turns Old Fishing Nets into Artworks

COVID herd immunity(群体免疫) will not happen in 2021
World Health Organization (WHO) chief scientist Soumya Swaminathan said Monday that herd immunity to coronavirus would not be achieved in 2021, despite the growing availability of vaccines(疫苗产量).
Factors that delay herd immunity include limited access to vaccines in developing countries, skepticism(怀疑) over vaccination, and the potential for virus mutations(变异), according to health experts.
A growing number of countries around the world, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Singapore, Germany and other European Union countries, are in the first stages of mass-vaccination campaigns.
Herd immunity occurs when enough people in a population have immunity to an infection(感染) so that it prevents the disease from spreading.
“We are not going to achieve any levels of population immunity or herd immunity in 2021,” Swaminathan said, while emphasizing that measures like physical distancing, hand washing and mask wearing continue to be necessary in controlling COVID's spread for the rest of the year.
However, Swaminathan praised the “incredible progress” made by vaccine researchers to develop several safe and effective vaccines at unprecedented(空前的) speed. Countries are currently administering vaccines developed by BioNTech-Pfizer, Oxford University AstraZeneca and Moderna.
“The vaccines are going to come,” she said. “They are going to go to all countries, but meanwhile we mustn't forget that there are measures that work,” she added, referring to hygiene(卫生) and social distancing.
“We won't get back to normal quickly,” Dale Fisher, chairman of the WHO's Outbreak Alert and Response Network, told a conference hosted by Reuters news agency. “We know we need to get to herd immunity and we need that in a majority of countries, but we are not going to see that in 2021,” Fisher said. “There might be some countries that might achieve it but even then that will not create normal especially in terms of border controls,” he added.
    1. Which of the following are not the factors that delay herd immunity?
    A. People are skeptical about vaccination.
    B. Access to vaccines in developing countries is limited.
    C. A growing number of countries begin mass-vaccination campaigns.
    D. Virus mutations are likely to happen.
    2. As for the first stages of mass-vaccination campaigns, which country is not mentioned in the passage?
    A. Vietnam. B. Germany. C. Singapore. D. the United Kingdom.
    3. What can we learn from what Fisher said?
    A. In many countries in 2021, people will live a normal life in terms of border controls.
    B. If some countries might achieve herd immunity, people will live a “normal” life.
    C. In terms of good border controls, we can achieve herd immunity.
    D. There maybe a long way to get to herd immunity all over the world.
    4. What is the attitude of Swaminathan to the progress of vaccine development?
    A. Positive. B. Negative. C. Critical. D. neutral.

1~20 BCBAC CBAAA CBCAC BACBA
W: I'm afraid I'll miss the concert if it doesn't stop raining right now.
    M: Can I give you a lift?
M: You look tired. Where have you been?
W: I planned to see the doctor, but I needed to meet my parents at the railway station.
W: How do you like the house, dear?
M: I find it not big enough. The bedroom is OK, but the kitchen and the bathroom are too small.
M: It's a cold and wet day. Did you get wet coming to school?
W: No, I didn't. But I hate this kind of weather. The wind seems like it blows right through you. I was shivering with cold while waiting for the bus. It's freezing!
W: I'd like to go to the movies this weekend. How can I find a good movie?
M: Just check the Reader. Here. If you find one worthwhile, let me know. I might go along.
    W: Oh! There's a complete listing of what's playing.
M: Wow, you're all dressed up. Where are you going?
W: My friend invited me to his house for dinner. I just need one more thing and I'll be all set.
M: What's that? You look good to me.
W: I want to buy some flowers to take. It's the first time I've been to his house.
    M: That's a nice idea.
W: Yes. My mother always taught me never to go to a person's house empty-handed, at least not for the first time.
M: Mary, have you set the table for your friends?
W: Yes, dad. I have prepared four places.
M: You may prepare just three places. Michael's mother telephoned. She said that Michael had a temperature. So he was not able to come.
W: What bad news! Did Michael's mother sound worried?
    M: Yes,of course.
W: I hope everything goes well. I'll ring up Michael later.
M: And she said that your mother and I could use their tickets to see a film named Cast Away after the dinner since they are not able to go.
W: I am sure that my mother will be surprised and happy.
W: So how was your trip to San Francisco, John?
    M: Oh, pretty good,mostly.
W: Mostly? What do you mean?
M: Well, it started off OK. Then I looked around a small town. And the food there was terrible.
    W: Really?
M: Yeah. One day I decided to rent a car. I wanted to get out of the city and look around.
W: Were you on your own?
M: Uh-huh. So first I drove across the Golden Gate Bridge and stopped to take some photos. Unfortunately, while I was driving I had a slight accident.
    W: What happened?
M: I ran off the road and hit a tree.
W: Oh, no. Were you hurt?
M: No. But I had to leave the car and take a taxi all the way back to the hotel. It cost me a lot.
W: Oh, no. What a vacation!
M: Did you hear what happened at lunchtime?
    W: No, tell me.
M: Mick and Tommy managed to cause trouble again.
W: Those two! They are always causing troubles! What was it this time?
M: They decided to go to Larry's Cafe for lunch.
W: But they're not allowed to go there!
M: That's right. As soon as the manager saw them, he asked them to leave.
    W: Did they leave?
M: Of course not. Mick started shouting. He said he didn't want to eat there and that the food was terrible.
    W: Oh, no!
M: And Tommy started smoking and then dropped his cigarette in someone's food.
W: What did the manager do?
M: Phone the school. The principal went straight there, but Tommy and Mick had left before she got there. She asked the manager to describe the boys. She knew who they were straightaway, so they've been told to see her now after school.
W: They've just spoiled the good reputation of our school!
M: Now I'd like to talk to you about the final exam. The exam will be held next Thursday, the last day of the exam week. Remember to bring along two or three pens in case you run out of ink. You will have to answer three of the five questions to write your articles. The final will count for 55% of your grade in the course. The research project will count for 20%, and the mid-term 25%. I'll be in my office almost all day on Tuesday of next week. If you run into any problems, please feel free to stop in. Good luck with your study, and I'll see you on Tuesday.

根据文章第二段最后一句话“... but I do remember watching him add butter and jelly on that ugly burnt biscuit and ate every bite of that thing. He never made a face nor uttered a word about it!”
根据第三段的“When I rose from the table that evening, I remember hearing my mom apologize to my dad for overcooking the biscuits and I will never forget what he said,“Honey, I love burnt biscuits every now and then.”(那天晚上,当我从桌子上站起来的时候,我记得听到妈妈因为饼干烧焦而向爸爸道歉,我永远不会忘记他说的话:“亲爱的,我时不时喜欢烧焦的饼干。”)”和第四段的“He wrapped me up in his arms and said gently,“Your mom put in a hard day at work today and she is really tired. Besides, a little burnt biscuit never hurt anyone!”(他把我搂在怀里,温柔地说:“你妈妈今天工作很辛苦,她真的很累。再说,一点烧焦的饼干也不会伤害任何人!)”可知,爸爸吃掉妈妈烤糊的饼干,丝毫不抱怨,反而感谢妈妈的付出并教育作者也要多体谅妈妈。由此推知,爸爸是一个体贴他人的人。故选A项。
根据最后一段二三句“Life is full of imperfect things and imperfect people. Learning to accept each other's faults and choosing to celebrate each other's differences contribute to a healthy, growing, and lasting relationship.” 故选A项。

根据第三段中““They have huge effects on our environment. They can kill coral reefs and many animals,”said Natalie.(Natalie说:“它们对我们的环境有巨大影响。它们会杀死珊瑚礁和许多动物”)”可知,Natalie决定用鬼网保护珊瑚礁和海洋动物。故选C。
【3题详解】词句猜测题。根据画线词后文“gear into new artworks”以及“We've made bracelets, rope art, mats, baskets, and we've made necklaces, which also use beach glass in them”可知,他们做过手镯、绳子艺术品、垫子、篮子,还做过项链,里面也用到了沙滩玻璃,Natalie从这些组织那里得到了一些鬼网和绳子,在家人的帮助下,她开始把这些废弃的工具变成新的艺术品。 A.
根据第一段“An Ontario teen is making waves by turning old fishing gear into new treasures. Since last year, Natalie, 15, has been taking lost or thrown — away fishing nets and rope and transforming them into bracelets, rope art, mats, baskets and necklaces.(安大略的一名少年把旧的渔具变成了新的宝物,掀起了一阵浪潮。

根据文章第三段“A growing number of countries around the world, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Singapore, Germany and other European Union countries, are in the first stages of mass-vaccination campaigns.(世界上越来越多的国家,包括美国、英国、新加坡、德国和其他欧盟国家,正处于大规模疫苗接种运动的第一阶段)”可推知,处于大规模疫苗接种运动第一阶段的国家中,没有提及越南。故选A项。
根据文章最后一段中的“We know we need to get to herd immunity and we need that in a majority of countries, but we are not going to see that in 2021(我们知道我们需要获得群体免疫力,我们需要在大多数国家获得这种免疫力,但我们不会在2021年看到这种情况)”以及“There might be some countries that might achieve it but even then that will not create normal especially in terms of border controls(可能有些国家可能实现这一目标,但即便如此,也不会创造正常的环境,特别是在边境管制方面)”可知,Fisher认为有些国家可能实现群体免疫这一目标,但全世界范围内获得群体免疫能力近期是看不到的,从而推知,要想在全世界范围内获得群体免疫也许还有很长的路要走。
由倒数第三段中的“However, Swaminathan praised the“incredible progress”made by vaccine researchers to develop several safe and effective vaccines at unprecedented speed.(然而,Swaminathan赞扬疫苗研究人员以前所未有的速度研制出几种安全有效的疫苗所取得的“令人难以置信的进展”)”可知,Swaminathan称赞疫苗研究人员所取得的进展是“令人难以置信的”,从而推知,Swaminathan对疫苗研发的进展持积极的的态度。故选A项。
E 2. D 3. C 4. G 5. A
【1题详解】上文“Adults who do exercise for just 150 minutes a week can reduce their risk of serious illness by 50%. Regular exercise reduces the risk of early death by 30%.(每周锻炼150分钟的成年人可以将患重病的风险降低50%。经常锻炼可以降低30%的早死风险)”提到的是锻炼带来的好处,所以选项E“它还能改善你的情绪、自尊和睡眠质量”承接上文,进一步说明锻炼的好处。故选E。
【2题详解】根据上文“In fact many adults spend seven hours or more on a chair each day.(事实上,许多成年人每天要在椅子上呆上7个小时或更多)”及下文“It means that we need to do something extra to burn more calories and use up all our energy.(这意味着我们需要做一些额外的事情来燃烧更多的卡路里和消耗我们所有的能量)”可知,选项D“这种缺乏规律的身体活动是一个大问题”,既承接上文每天坐在椅子上的时间过长这种缺乏锻炼的情况,也引出下文缺乏锻炼就意味着要做额外的运动来消耗能量。故选D。

Joining a sports club is usually a cheap way of getting exercise and can be very sociable, too.(像足球、橄榄球或板球这样的团队运动可能很便宜,因为所有的球员都分担了球场的费用。
【4题详解】根据上文“Alternatively, if you don't want to spend any money at all, go for a run. The only equipment needed for this is a pair of trainers.(或者,如果你根本不想花钱,那就去跑步。唯一需要的装备就是一双运动鞋)”及下文“Go to the park. Try getting a group of friends or family together and have a game of football there.(去公园。试着召集一群朋友或家人在一起踢足球)”可知,本段介绍了除了上段提到的锻炼的方式之外的简单的方式,所以选项G“同样地,早一站下车,多走一段距离也有帮助”这样一种锻炼方式,符合本段内容要求。故选G。

【5题详解】上文“Although adults should do two and a half hours of exercise a week, you don't have to do it all at one time.(虽然成年人每周应该锻炼两个半小时,但你不必一次锻炼完)”提到不用一次锻炼两个半小时,那么接下来会提到具体怎样分配这两个半小时的锻炼时间。 承接了上文,也引出下文“If you do ten minutes before work ten minutes during your lunch break and ten minutes after work, five days a week, you've achieved the target!(如果你在工作前锻炼十分钟,午休时十分钟,下班后十分钟,一周有五天,你就达到目标了!)” 故选A。

固定短语be known for意为“因……而著名”,以某种知识、技能、作品或特征而出名;固定短语be known as意为“以……而著名”,以某种身份而出名,后往往接身份,职位名词,本句中a famous Chinese swimmer是一个职业,故应该用be known as。故将for改为as。
take sb. as...
