“But I knw it’s nt that easy,” he said.
“Well, it can be,” said the judge befre giving rders t allw me t be a parent-t-be.
My first reactin, when I heard, went smething like, “Are yu crazy? Hw culd yu say yes withut asking me?
In three years as a cuple, we had never discussed adpting a child: I was an devted playwright(剧作家)wrking as a part-time wrd clerk. Danny was a respected yet wildly under paid scial wrker. We had a rmmate, wh slept in ur living rm, t help pay the rent.
We knew hw many challenges cuples usually faced when they want t have a baby. And while Danny had patience and selflessness, I didn’t knw hw t change a diaper(尿布), let alne nurse a child. I didn’t trust the scial system and was sure there wuld be difficulties. Als, I culdn’t handle parenthd. S I prmised myself I wuldn’t devte t it.
The caretaker held the baby and then placed him in my arms. But when the baby stared up at me, with all the inncence and hpe he shwed t me, I, like Danny, cmpletely fell fr him.

Sil creates life frm death. The prductin f mre than 95% f the fd we eat relies n sil. But this precius resurce is erding(侵蚀)at a glbal average f 13.5 tns per hectare per year. Instead f nurishing crps, fertile tpsil is washed and blwn away, ending up in incnvenient places such as ditches and ceans.
J Handelsman and Kayla Chen try t make readers care abut sil in A Wrld Withut Sil. Their prlgue(前言)takes the frm f a letter t the gvernment. With the letter, they hpe t make sil management a federal pririty. The fllwing chapters cver the basic science f sil as well as the causes and cnsequences f its ersin. In the last part f the bk, the authrs turn t pssible slutins—many f them simple, and sme centuries ld. They describe abut traditinal sil management techniques, including planting diverse crps in rtatin(轮种), increasing rganic cntent, plughing as little as pssible, etc. With these techniques, farmers are able t prduce rich agricultural prductin while maintaining deep banks f fertile sil.
Why, then, is fertile sil being allwed t be washed and blwn away? The answer, nt surprisingly, rests in glbal capitalism. Farmers’ prfit is thin, frcing farmers t plant the highest-prfit crp frm field t field every seasn. T ensure fd security, Handelsman and Chen urge the wrld t demand a real tp-dwn change in hw agricultural prductin is managed. “The burden f prtecting sil cannt be shifted t farmers and envirnmental activists,” they nte. Gvernments must begin t mve twards a mdel in which farmers are less independent business peple grwing and selling fd, and mre gvernment-supprted land wrkers managing bth fd prductin and sil prtectin. This shuld be the cre f agriculture.
Our land and sil are t precius t be destryed by the market price f crps. We must invest deeply and thughtfully in ur farmers s that they can invest deeply and thughtfully in the land. This is the future f farming.

It scarcely seems surprising that learning t underline a mdal verb, such as “can”, and “may”, des little t help students use them effectively in their wn writing. These wrds are anyway grasped by tiny children withut the need t knw what they are called. This may tempt the cnclusin that the teaching f grammar shuld be shelved altgether. But there are reasns t refrm it rather than thrw it away.

Even if yu did knw by nature hw t make clauses in yur native languages as a child — just withut instructin — getting t grips with them in German r Russian in later years is simpler if yu knw hw t define and spt them. As it is, many English- speakers cme t understand grammar by studying a freign language, rather than the ther way rund.
Fr grammarians keen n future jbs, the natural-language prcessing field is bming. After many years f pr results, technlgical wizards have develped prgrams fr autmated translatin, speech recgnitin and ther services that are actually usable, if far frm perfect. These tls may rely mre n knwledge f artificial intelligence than f the subjunctive, but linguistic(语言学的)expertise still matters, and may give beginners an edge ver cmpetitrs whse best language is Pythn(编程).
Grammar culd still be taught better. One small study shwed imprvement in sme students when cncepts are linked cncretely t writing tasks. A ck des nt need t knw chemistry t make a delicius sup. But the science f hw wrds cmbine t make meaning is fascinating and fundamental.
    32. Why d sme peple cnsider stpping teaching grammar?
    A. Teachers’ teaching methds are far frm satisfactry.
    B. It’s unnecessary fr small kids t grasp mdal verbs.
    C. Drawing lines under wrds fails t be effective in learning.
    D. Grammar Learning desn’t bring bvius effect t writing.
    33. Which f the fllwing can replace the underlined phrase “getting t grips with” in paragraph 3?
    A. CntrllingB. MasteringC. Hlding n tD. Dealing with.
    34. When it cmes t future jbs, grammarians believe ______.
    A. a gd cmmand f Pythn is enugh fr prgrammers
    B. the field f artificial technlgy still shws great prmise
    C. being expert in language means advantages in cmpetitin
    D. cmputer geniuses will invent perfect tls t prcess language
    35. What’s the main idea f this passage?
    A. Grammar teaching shuldn’t be stpped but refrmed.
    B. Scientific study f human beings benefits frm grammar.
    C. Grammar helps children t learn freign languages better.
    D. There’s much rm fr imprvement in grammar research.

As I sat dwn n the bench, I pressed a key n the pian and was surprised t hear n sund. Feeling as if the whle wrld was watching me, I was struck dead with embarrassment. Hw culd I perfrm the sng withut the pian? I was n pins and needles when Phyllis slwly made her way t the frnt f the crwd f dinners and annunced in a cmfrting tne, “This girl has cme t sing fr us but the pian seems t be a little nervus.” Almst immediately, there was scattered applause and several peple stepped frward t help me plug in the pian and set the micrphne. With everything in place, I tk a deep breath and began my perfrmance.
Nervusness melted away and I started t enjy the perfrmance with the ld. One wman gt up and began t enthusiastically dance abut the rm. Sme f the peple swayed in their chairs t the beat f the music while thers tapped theirs tes. The perfrmance ended up with a strm f applause frm the crwd. I realized that it was far better than a pian recital because almst everyne seemed t truly appreciate my music and I’m prud that I have the pwer t spread kindness t them. It ended up being a blessing in disguise that the recital was canceled, leading t me sharing the gift f music with thse wh needed it mst.
