一、阅读理解 |
For millions of people sitting in a traffic jam or standing on a crowded train, the daily commute (通勤) probably isn’t the best part of their day. But cars and trains aren’t the only travel options.
Electric Vehicles
For those who have a short commute, you could consider getting an electric bike or scooter. An electric scooter has the advantage of being highly portable (轻便的): small and light enough to carry to your office. You’ll just need to check if they are allowed to be used in your area.
Take RYNO for example. It’s a single-wheel electric scooter, whose highest speed is about that of a bicycle. And like other electric vehicles, it can be charged anywhere.
WalkCar
If you want transportation for short distances, the WalkCar might be perfect for you.
The WalkCar looks like a laptop and only weighs three kilograms. It’s also incredibly easy to use — stand on it and it will start to move; move your weight to one side and it will change direction. The WalkCar will take you at a speed of up to 10 kilometers per hour and can travel 12 kilometers on one charge.
Jetpacks
Weighing around 200 kilograms, jetpacks aren’t exactly portable, but they’re sure to have a lot of fun and attract a lot of attention. Running on petrol, the jet engines allow the user to lift off the ground and fly in the air.
The world’s first jetpack is the Martin Jetpack. Once you’ve attached this tiny personal jet plane onto your back, you’ll be able to travel up to 50 kilometers at a height of 1,000 meters. With a price tag of about $150,000, this is probably the most expensive option, but it will almost certainly be the coolest!
1.What do Electric Vehicles and WalkCar have in common?
① being portable. ② being rechargeable.
③ being widely used. ④ being suitable for short distances.
A.①②③ | B.①②④ | C.①③④ | D.②③④ |
2.What might be the reason for customers to choose jetpacks?
A.The price. | B.The appearance. |
C.The weight. | D.The flight performance. |
3.Which column is the text probably taken from?
A.Lifestyle. | B.Travel. | C.Entertainment. | D.Transport. |
Cut off from society
You're on your way to school as usual when suddenly an invisible barrier appears out of nowhere, trapping you underneath it and isolating you from the outside world. What do you do?
This is the scary experience the residents of a fictional town called Chester’s Mill are going through in the US TV series Under the Dome. Based on famous US author Stephen King’s 2009 best-selling novel, the show has become “the highest-rated summer show in 21 years” since debuting (首播) on June 24, reported the New York Post.
The series begins with the dome (穹顶) making its alarming appearance. As the earth trembles and birds take off, an enormous, invisible barrier slices down, cutting the town off from the rest of the world.
The residents quickly realize they are trapped, probably for quite some time. Families are separated, emergency services are unreachable and water, food and fuel are strictly limited.
There is no way out or in. But who or what is responsible? Nobody knows. Thus, the residents are at the mercy of unknown forces and their internal conflicts.
While it provides an enjoyable TV thrill ride, the movie’s science fiction is closely linked with reality.
“Not only is it worrying, suspenseful (悬疑的) and full of splendid special effects, but it has big thoughts about environmentalism and the future of the commented The Denver Post planet,”
As King himself explained to The Telegraph: “The dome is a microcosm (微观世界) of life. We all live under the dome. We live on this little blue planet and so far as we know that’s all we’ve got,” he said. “The resources that we’ve got are the resources that we’ve got; they’re limited.”
But the show explores many themes in addition to environmental destruction. It also shows “how quickly the social order we take for granted can disappear when people are isolated and afraid”, said the Los Angeles Times.
It is “a science-fiction social study”, said The Washington Post. “Once the people of Chester’s Mill realize they are indefinitely trapped without means of food supply, outside communication and power, their polite sense of small-town, American civilization begins to fall apart.”
4.The underlined word “isolating” in the first paragraph probably means _______.
A.separating | B.protecting |
C.discouraging | D.distinguishing |
5.In the TV series Under the Dome, _______.
A.the dome, which appears out of nowhere, doesn’t have huge effects on the residents’ lives |
B.it takes a long time for residents to realize they are trapped by the invisible dome |
C.because of the dome, the residents in the small town become more united and helpful |
D.not D.knowing what has D.happened, the residents feel helpless against unknown forces |
6.Why is the TV series closely linked with reality according to the article?
A.Because it is suspenseful and uses splendid special effects to reflect modern life. |
B.Because it gets us to think about the future of the earth and the importance of environmental protection. |
C.Because it attaches great importance to following the social order even in frightening situations. |
D.Because the residents in the TV series live almost the same life as ordinary Americans do. |
Construction on Knolly’s Tunnel began in 1896, and it was opened on August 13th, 1898 by the man it was named after--Sir Clement C. Knolly, Acting Governor of Trinidad. It linked Rio Claro with Port of Spain. Its architecture is still admired and studied today, and many are amazed that Knolly’s Tunnel has stood up to the earth’s movement over so many years.
Much research is being done on the tunnel. At the top of Knolly’s Tunnel are cottages covered with leaves, where visitors can sit and enjoy the beauty of nature. Standing at the beginning of Knolly’s Tunnel, you can see nothing but the tiny light at the end. The train tracks have been removed and replaced with small stones. Visitors can drive through the tunnel or walk through, but should do so in groups for safety. In the old days, there were no lights, but now there are street lights on the way to the tunnel, though not inside.
On your way in, you may notice some manholes on the walls of the tunnel. These were there for individuals to step into for safety as the train passed. Knolly’s Tunnel can be accessed through Tabaquite and through Mitchell Gap. The road was recently improved, but is better when you enter from Tabaquite, and there are signs on the road directing you to Knolly’s Tunnel.
On the drive to Knolly’s Tunnel there are two other cottages where visitors can sit and just enjoy nature. At the site itself, there is nothing to purchase to eat or drink, but in Tabaquite there are several bars, a restaurant, and food outlets. A gas station and a health centre are also close by.
For those who admire architecture, Knolly’s Tunnel is a must-see when visiting Trinidad. For the nature lovers, there is no better place for them to be and for the historians, they can walk or drive through Knolly’s Tunnel knowing that many of our ancestors toiled (worked hard) on its structure. So when you visit Trinidad, don’t forget to take a look at Knolly’s Tunnel!
7.Knolly’s Tunnel is special in __________.
A.its environment | B.its function | C.its location | D.its architecture |
8.If you are visiting Knolly’s Tunnel, you can__________.
A.take a train tour through it | B.buy some snacks in it |
C.drive through it | D.walk along the track through it |
9.The underlined word “site” in the paragraph 4 refers to ________.
A.Trinidad | B.Tabaquite | C.Mitchell Gap | D.Knolly’s Tunnel |
10.What is the purpose of the passage?
A.To suggest a visit to Knolly’s Tunnel. |
B.To introduce the history of Knolly’s Tunnel. |
C.To evaluate the value of Knolly’s Tunnel. |
D.To witness the change of Knolly’s Tunnel |
11.The passage above is probably taken from ____________.
A.a geography textbook | B.a travel journal |
C.a sports report | D.a health and fitness magazine |
Jim Thorpe is one of the greatest athletes of all time. He had amazing athletic abilities and was well-known during his lifetime, yet that did not make Thorpe a stranger to adversity.
Thorpe was an American Indian from Oklahoma who developed his extraordinary athletic skills in his youth through hard labor. It was also in his youth that he learned to endure hardship brought upon by racial prejudice. Many would say his childhood was not easy. He grew up poor and at age 9 his twin brother passed away and a few years later he lost both of his parents.
But that did not stop him from doing what he loved and pursuing his dreams. Nothing seemed to stop him, not even stolen shoes. Just hours before Thorpe was going to compete in the 1912 Olympics, somebody stole his shoes. Thorpe improvised(临时拼凑) by getting shoes out of the garbage. The shoes were two different sizes. He wore an extra pair of socks on one foot to even them out.
He still went on to win two gold medals—winning each event he competed in except for one, the javelin(标枪). The javelin was the only event he didn’t win, probably because he had never competed in that event before. It is interesting to note that Thorpe had tried to throw the javelin once before in the Olympic trials. At the time, he didn’t know that he could throw it with a running start. He threw it standing still and was placed second.
At the Olympics,he also took part in the decathlon(十项全能运动). He finished first in two events, third in four events, and fourth in two more. Thorpe ended up finishing third in the world. He was undoubtedly a dominating force that couldn’t be stopped and just kept on going.
I think Paul Dughi said it best, “ It’s hard to imagine now that pro athletes get paid millions of dollars just to wear a particular brand of shoes. For Jim Thorpe, it didn’t matter what kind he wore.”
12.What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 1 mean?
A.The adversity Thorpe met with led to his success. |
B.Thorpe’s success was no guarantee of a better life. |
C.Thorpe’s career brought him both gains and losses. |
D.Thorpe suffered many hardships despite his success. |
13.Why did Thorpe wear more socks on one foot?
A.To prevent the foot from injury. |
B.To make the shoe fit the foot. |
C.To stop the shoe from being stolen. |
D.To show his problem-solving skills. |
14.What most likely led to Thorpe’s failure to win the javelin?
A.Loss of his own sports shoes. |
B.A casual attitude towards the event. |
C.Lack of experience in the event. |
D.A shortage of talent for the event. |
15.Which of the following words can best describe Jim Thorpe?
A.Loyal and enthusiastic. |
B.Genuine and creative. |
C.Tough and strong-minded. |
D.Selfless and good-tempered. |

You’ve got mail…and it’s a postcard
Paulo Magalhaes, a 34-year-old Portuguese computer engineer, loves to open his mailbox and find a brightly colored picture of Rome’s Colosseum. Or Africa’s Victoria Falls. Or China’s Great Wall. 16.
“I often send postcards to family and friends.” he says to China Daily, “but you can imagine that after a while, you never receive as many as you send, and you realize that not everyone is into it. 17.” Seeking other like-minded souls, however, Paulo started looking in a somewhat unlikely place: online. Many would say the Internet is a place for people who have given up on the traditional postal service, but Paulo’s hunch(直觉)paid off.
Today his hobby has developed into the website postcrossing.com, a social network that has grown to 575,217 registered users in 214 countries and regions since he started it 10 years ago. 18.Running the website has almost turned into a full-time job.
Language is certainly a barrier for many people. For postcrossing to work worldwide, a common communication language is needed so that everyone can understand each other. As cool as it may be to receive a postcard written in Chinese, the concept doesn’t work if one doesn’t understand it. 19. So a common language is required and in postcrossing that’s English since it’s widely spoken.
“Many people in China have limited exposure to English. 20. That said, we know of many postcrossing members, including Chinese, who have actually improved their English skills through their use of postcrossing,” Paulo says.
A.And that’s totally fine. |
B.That makes it extra hard to learn and practice it. |
C.He likes to think of sending postcards as a family-friendly hobby. |
D.Many love to make a connection with someone from across the world. |
E.On August 5, the number of postcards exchanged by members topped 31 million. |
F.Similarly, if you speak only Chinese, receiving a card in Swedish takes part of the fun away. |
G.In short, he loves postcards, and the excitement of getting a hand-written note from someone far away. |

Brutus had everything in the world: good food, good toys, and good clothes. But the problem was that he had to share them all with his three other brothers, Mack, Jack and Robert.
Brutus had to share his favorite cookie box with Mack, who always finished the whole box before Brutus could take a bite. He also had to share his toys with his youngest brother Jack, who always ended up breaking them. Brutus also had the unfortunate privilege of being given his older brother Robert’s hand-me-downs of old clothes.
Brutus hated sharing and wished he had nobody to share his belongings with. “Why can’t I be the only child?” Brutus sighed as he stared at the stars. “I wish I had no stupid brothers,” Brutus demanded at one sparkling star.
To his surprise, the star suddenly twinkled and fell towards his direction. The star inched closer and closer to his bedroom window. He screamed and tried to wake his brothers up but it was too late. The star crashed inside their room, followed by an ear-splitting explosion.
The next day, Brutus woke up with a bad headache. He rushed to his brothers’ beds to ask them if they were okay but was quickly shocked to see that their beds had been empty. They were nowhere to be found.
Brutus had the fortune of spending the whole morning playing with his toys. He put on his brother’s brand new clothes and sneakers which fit him perfectly. As he was checking himself in the mirror, he suddenly realized that his wish had come true. His brothers were gone and he had the whole world to himself.
“I can get used to this,” he said to himself happily
