Later this month, Tate Britain will host its first Van Gogh exhibition since 1947. Here we've rounded up 4 of his best paintings before the show.
Potato Eaters
Potato Eaters was Van Gogh's first major work and, despite a distinct lack of colour, it was one that he was most proud of. His aim was to represent the difficulties of country life, so the farmers are painted in earthy tones with rough faces and bony hands. He was more concerned with conveying his message than achieving technical perfection in this painting.
Irises
Van Gogh finished almost 142 pieces during his stay in the Saint Remy de Provence asylum (精神病院), where he was a voluntary patient from 1889 to 1890. This piece was started shortly after he arrived there. The hospital garden provided much inspiration for the artist during his stay there. Originally, the flowers in this work were painted purple but the red pigment (色素) faded over time and has now turned blue.
Cafe Terrace at Night
Despite being painted more than 130 years ago, this cafe still exists in France and has since been renamed the Cafe Van Gogh. This artwork marks the first time Van Gogh's famous post-impressionistic star-filled sky was seen in a piece, and it was painted on the ground, in person, rather than from memory. While the artwork doesn't bear his signature, it's widely known to be Van Gogh's, as he mentioned Cafe Terrace at Night in a number of his letters.
Wheat Field With Cypresses
This piece was inspired by the view from Van Gogh's asylum window and was finished on the spot. The work was the title of three paintings that offer an insight into his stay at the hospital.' Van Gogh was 80 pleased with the summer landscape that he made three copies there, one of the same size—which hangs in the National Gallery and two smaller copies which he planned to gift to his mother and sister.

Marcelo Toledo usually creates sculptures! and jewelry out of metal. Now the Argentine artist is working with a new material: waste from the COVID-19 pandemic (大流行病). such as masks, to create an exhibition exploring the painful impact of the virus.
Toledo, who has made jewelry for the musical “Evita” on Broadway and unique pieces for many famous people, was among the first in Argentina to be infected with COVID-19, which left him hospitalized for eight days. The experience had a great effect on his life and led to a series of artworks, including a 14-meter mask with the Argentine flag that he placed on the famous obelisk (方尖纪念碑) in Buenos Aires to raise awareness about organ (器官) donation during the pandemic.
For his new exhibition, the “Museum of the After”, Toledo is collecting recycled waste from the COVID-19 sent by hospitals, laboratories and strangers, including old medical parts and newspapers about the pandemic.
“I am excited to be able to turn pain into beauty and this exhibition is just recording everything that is happening to us as a society,” Toledo said. The artworks, which will go on show from September in a public space in downtown Buenos Aires, will all be made from waste materials or garbage that people send him. “It is the first time that I have done an exhibition in which I do not have to buy any of the elements,” he said.
In the exhibition there will be a real ship that will symbolically cross a “storm” and recycling islands to raise awareness about the importance of caring for the environment. “The exhibition will tell the story of this ship that went sailing and was stranded (搁浅) by a storm, which is a great metaphor for what is happening to us. This pandemic is a great global storm,” Toledo said.
As with the huge mask, which was replicated (复制) in countries such as the United States and Japan, the artist dreams of replicating the new exhibition in other cities around the world.
4.What inspired Toledo to make the 14-meter mask?
A.His hospital stay. B.His Broadway experiences.
C.His fear of the pandemic. D.His research on organ donation.

D.They are made out of rubbish about the pandemic.
6.What is Toledo trying to express with the story of the ship?
A.Our awareness of environmental protection is improving.
B.We should make every effort to defeat the pandemic.
C.Our irresponsible behavior leads to natural disasters.
D.We suffer a lot from the COVID-19 pandemic.
7.What does Toledo hope to do?

Rembrandt van Rijn’s most famous work, The Nightwatch was commanded in 1639 by Franz Ban-ninck Cocq, the captain of Amsterdam’s civil army, and portrayed him and his 17 members: It was completed in 1642 and spent more than 70 years in the hall of the civil army it was based on.
In 1715, Dutch officials decided to move the painting to the city hall in Amsterdam’s Royal Palace. The almost 12-foot by 14-foot art work was too large to go through the doors, so the movers decided to cut the edges. The strips (边条) were never recovered. However, art historians have been aware of the missing items thanks to a smaller copy of the original scene painted by Dutch artist Gerrit Lundens.
In 2019, officials of Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum decided to recreate the missing sections. The team, led by scientist, Robert Erdmann, turned to a new AI algorithm (算法), which helps computers figure out what images may have once looked like. The scientists scanned images of the original and Lundens’ painting to the computer. The AI was able to study the painting’s perspective. It also recognized the exact colors used by the Dutch master and could even copy his brushstrokes (笔画).
The “missing” strips were printed and added to the painting. The left side included two men watching the event and a young boy running away from the army. A drummer and a barking dog were added to the painting’s right side.
“It is spectacular because what Rembrandt painted was Captain Franz ordering his soldiers to march out, and that is now exactly what you see,” said Taco Dibbits. “With the addition, especially on the left and the bottom, an empty space is created in the painting where they march towards. When the painting was cut, the soldiers were in the center, but Rembrandt intended them to be off-center marching towards that empty space, and that is the genius that Rembrandt understands: you create movement, a dynamic of the troops marching towards the left of the painting.”
8.Why were some sides of The Nightwatch cut off?
A.To make it easy to be displayed. B.To get it through the doorway.
C.To place it in the hall of the civil army. D.To please captain Franz Banninck Cocq.
9.How can AI help reconstruct the painting?
A.By changing the painting’s perspective. B.By grasping the painter’s brushstrokes.
C.By identifying the colors of the painting.
D.By finding a copy of the original painting.
10.What can we learn from Taco’s words?
A.The painting reflects an intention to move.
B.The original painting centers on the soldiers.
C.Franz Banninck Cocq is a genius of painting.
D.The empty left of the painting is useless.
11.What is the best title for the text?
A.AI Draws a Masterwork in the Flesh
B.AI Brings a Painting Back to Life
C.AI Creates a Painting
D.AI Helps Restore a Painting to Its Original Form

To say that Spanish painter Pablo Picasso was a leader in Western art in the 20th century is to repeat an accepted fact, according to Time magazine. “No painter before him had enjoyed such a large following in his own lifetime.”
This year marks the 140th anniversary of Picasso’s birth. Born on Oct. 25, 1881, Picasso had created more than 20,000 paintings, drawings, sculptures and other pieces of art by the time he died at 91.
That’s a long time to paint! The result is not only a lot of art, but a lot of different phases in Picasso’s work. On its website, Christie’s auction (拍卖) house lists eight different periods in the course of his painting career.
Over a century ago, the painter once said that, “Every act of creation is first of all an act of destruction.” So the eight periods are all very different in their choice of subjects and yet unmistakably drawn by Picasso’s hands. Financial Express called his style unusual.
As his style changed over time, it became more simplistic. A common joke is that Picasso forgot how to paint. After all, he was classically trained at the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona.
Now he is best known for leading an artistic movement known as “Cubism (立体派)”. It used geometric shapes to create human and animal figures. With this method, Picasso tried to show his figures from multiple perspectives (视角) in two-dimensional space. For example, a person’s left eye may be shown from straight ahead while his right eye and nose are shown from the side. The result is strange and beautiful, frightening and funny.
Picasso often said that he admired primitive art and drawings made by youngsters. “When I was the age I could draw like Raphael, but it took me a lifetime to learn to draw like them,” he said. Maybe that’s why Picasso is still so popular. We look at his work and think, “Maybe I could do that!”
12.Which of the following best describes Pablo Picasso?
A.Productive. B.Optimistic. C.Traditional. D.Generous.
13.Why did Financial Express call Picasso’s style unusual?
A.His act of creation was destructive. B.He created a series of simple images.
C.His painting style remained unchanged.
D.He drew different subjects in different periods.
14.What is special about a cubist painting according to the text?
A.It is rather difficult to understand.
B.It shows figures from various perspectives.
C.It covers different subjects at the same time.
D.It reflects the relationship between humans and animals.
15.What does the underlined word “them” in the last paragraph refer to?
A.Raphael’s works. B.Artists. C.Drawings. D.Youngsters.

I sat in the breakfast corner with my four-year-old son, Matthew, trying to ignore the ache in my stomach. I was still recovering from a surgery. I hoped for strength and happiness. But the future seemed so hopeless , I’d always wanted five or six kids. Three surgeries later, that dream would never come true.
Matthew jumped up from his spot on the kitchen floor. “Bird!” he shouted, rushing to the sliding door. Sure enough, there was a white dove (鸽子)seated on a rubber tree. It sat there a few moments, and then flew away. I’d never seen one in our neighborhood before.
When I dragged myself to the kitchen the next morning, the dove was back. This time it was with a mate carrying twigs(嫩枝).”Look, Matthew,” I said, pointing to the tree. “They're going to make a nest.” The doves flew in and out of the courtyard all week, building on the top of the rubber tree. Matthew could hardly contain his excitement. Every morning, he'd run into the kitchen and take his spot by the sliding glass door, talking to the birds while they worked. As much as I was grieving(感到悲伤),I couldn't help but look forward to the doves’ visits too. We watched their progress as if it were a real-life soap opera unfolding before us. I’d do the cooking and for a moment, my pain disappeared, replaced by joy.
Then it all went wrong. The courtyard was a safe enough spot for a nest, but the rubber tree's broad, thin leaves were far from stable. One night, a strong wind blew through, throwing the doves' nest to the ground. I heard the twigs break apart. Nothing good ever lasts. I wouldn't blame the doves if they never came back. But they returned. And they paid no attention to the pile of sticks that had once been their nest. They started again from scratch(从头开始), though the wind destroyed all their hard work. The next day, and the next, they renewed their efforts, as if nothing had happened.

47.Paragraph 1:
I knew I had to do something. The doves had given me something to look forward to, even on my darkest days. I was going to help them in return. I woke up the following morning with a plan. There was only an hour before the time when the doves usually made their visits. I looked through the garage for an old piece of shelving. I leaned a stepladder by the sliding door, hammered the shelving into the wall next to the rubber tree and covered it with leaves so it looked like part of the tree. Then Matthew and I stood by the door, waiting and hoping.
Paragraph 2:
“The birds were back!” Matthew announced. There they were adding bits and pieces to the new nest. “It worked! The doves were back.”We watched three chicks break free from their shells. Life was filled with wonders and surprises like a pair of white doves building a nest on the top of a rubber tree, with me waiting and hoping.

文中使用了look forward to,be filled with等高频词汇。现在分词作状语如Then Matthew and I stood by the door, waiting and hoping.with的复合结构Life was filled with wonders and surprises like a pair of white doves building a nest on the top of a rubber tree, with me waiting and hoping.等高级表达。高级表达的引用为短文增添色彩,彰显作者的高水平写作能力。
