For decades, Frederick Banting and Charles Best were believed to have contributed to the discovery of insulin (胰岛素) between 1921 and 1922 at the University of Toronto (U of T). In 1923, the university created the Banting and Best Chair of Medical Research, followed by the Banting and Best Department of Medical Research and the Banting Institute (1930) and, in 1954, the Best Institute.
However, the 1923 Nobel Prize in Medicine was awarded jointly to Banting and John J. R. Macleod. The physiology professor, who headed up the laboratory where the research took place, had been much more involved in the research than was later acknowledged. After learning that Macleod was honoured alongside him rather than Best, Banting shared his prize money with Best. Macleod, meanwhile, split his share of the prize with the fourth member of the team, J. Bertram Collip, a young biochemist from the University of Alberta. Collip's essential contribution was producing a purified pancreatic extract (胰腺提取物), which was administered on Jan. 23, 1922, to Leonard Thompson, a 14-year-old patient at Toronto General Hospital. That shot was the first successful human trial of insulin.
Much of the early research on insulin took place in the old medical school building at U of T. Opened in 1903, it featured state-of-the-art technology, including facilities for animal research. But Banting, a war-time surgeon, lecturer and medical researcher, was unimpressed. When he arrived in 1921, the operating room had lain unused for years and needed a thorough cleaning to make it usable. Located just below the building's roof, it also became unbearably hot during the summer. Early laboratory testing took place right there.
In 1982, Michael Bliss, a history professor at U of T, restored Macleod and Collip to their rightful place as co-discoverers of insulin. In 1990, a new plaque (牌匾) acknowledging the cooperation was put up outside U of T's current medical sciences building.
    24. What can be learned about U of T?
    A. It was established almost 100 years ago.
    B. It saw an important advance in medicine.
    C. It developed rapidly thanks to Banting and Best.
    D. It had close cooperation with Toronto General Hospital.
    25. What might be Thompson's attitude towards Collip?
    A. Negative. B. Doubtful. C. Grateful. D. Pitiful.
    26. What probably made Banting unimpressed by U of T's medical school?
    A. inexperienced teammates. B. Tiring and endless tasks.
    C. The poor working environment. D. The unreasonable salary.
    27. What is the text mainly about?
    A. The 1923 Nobel Prize in Medicine.
    B. The truth behind the discovery of insulin.
    C. The long history of U of T and its influence.
    D. The deep friendship among several scientists.

What is the likelihood of you having someone who looks just like you? Would it be a good thing? And if you did have one, would you want to meet them? Consider how often your facial features are used to identify you. Your passport, ID card and driving licence all bare your face. To enter your workplace, you likely need to be recognisable. You may need your face to unlock your smartphone and possibly even need it to exclude you from being present at a crime scene.
The word “doppelganger” refers to a person who looks almost the same as you, essentially sharing your features; those that you thought were unique to you and your identity. Not an identical twin, as a doppelganger has no relation to you. The idea originated in German folklore. A doppelganger was said to be a spirit-double that replicated every human and beast on earth.
So, let's get real. What are the chances of you having one in the first place? There's said to be a one in 135 chance of an absolute dead ringer for you existing anywhere in the world, so the chances are pretty low, despite folk wisdom promising you otherwise. And the chances of meeting? The mathematical certainty of finding this person is supposedly less than one in a trillion!
That said, these statistics may be a good thing. Historically, having a double hasn't always been a positive.
Back in 1999, an innocent American man, indistinguishable from the real criminal, was sent to prison for robbery, where he stayed for 19 years. In the end, it turned out to be a case of mistaken identity. In a different case, a woman in New York was accused of trying to poison her doppelganger with deadly cheesecake so that she could steal her identity!
And, why are people interested in finding their possible doppelganger anyway? It may be helpful to look to the past when facial resemblance indicated kinship. Maybe one day you'll meet your lookalike, but we understand that, after this, you possibly don't want to!
    28. In this passage, which of the following is your doppelganger?
    A. facial features used to identify you.
    B. your face to unlock your smartphone.
    C. a human who share the similarity with you.
    D. your identical twin.
    29. What does the underlined phrases “these statistics” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
    A. the low chances of having a doppelganger and the lower chances of meeting her/him.
    B. German folklore and folk wisdom.
    C. the historical data.
    D. your recognizable information.
    30. What did the main characters in the two cases mentioned have in common?
    A. They were innocent.
    B. Their doubles brought them sufferings.
    C. They admired the life of others.
    D. They had difficulty recognizing their own identity .
    31. What’s the author’s attitude towards meeting someone who looks just like you?
    A. promising. B. relaxing.
    C. undesirable. D. meaningful.

    D
Winters are long and cold in Finland. That’s why new technology that stores summer heat in a giant sand battery(电池) is used to keep homes warm in the winter. The sand battery can store the heat for months so the energy that was generated by solar power in the summer can be used in the winter to heat homes. Researchers in Finland have installed(安装) the first fully-functioning“sand battery”. They believe it could solve the country’s year-round crisis(危机) in power supply, which is a significant issue for green energy.
The sand battery was installed in the Vatajankoski power plant that runs the heating system for the houses in the area. It works by heating the sand, circulating the heat generated in the sand using a heat exchanger. Researchers used low-grade sand to charge(充电) the devices with heat from cheap electricity coming from either solar or wind energy. The sand battery can store energy and heat up to 500 degrees Celsius, which can be used to warm homes during winter when large amounts of energy were consumed(消耗).
It is a cost-effective method because when the battery releases the hot air, it warms the water for the district heating system that is pumped around homes, offices, and the local swimming pool. Sand is an ideal material because it is cheap and readily available everywhere. While other inexpensive items like water can store heat, sand can be heated to much higher temperatures. The sand used is of the lowest quality so it cannot be used in construction thus making it a sustainable choice. Besides, sand-based batteries last longer than other batteries. According to a study, researchers obtained silicon using quartz sand to create a battery that lasts three times longer than lithium-ion(锂离子) batteries.
“This innovation is a part of the smart and green energy transition. Heat storage systems can significantly help to increase intermittent renewables in the electrical grid,” said Markku Ylönen, co-founder of Polar Night Energy. “At the same time, we can make full use of the heat waste to keep the city warm. This is a logical step towards combustion-free(无燃烧)heat production.”
    32. What is the function of the sand battery?
    A. To charge electronic devices.
    B. To store heat from green energy.
    C. To provide electricity for power plants.
    D. To turn solar energy into chemical fuels.
    33. How does the sand battery work?
    A. By producing electricity with seawater.
    B. By consuming the hot air inside a plant.
    C. By circulating the heat from heated sand.
    D. By burning a cheap material made from sand.
    34. What is the purpose of paragraph 3?
    A. To present the advantages of sand batteries.
    B. To highlight the power crisis in Finland.
    C. To explain the reasons for creating a new battery.
    D. To show the process of manufacturing sand batteries.
    35. According to Markku Ylönen, the application of sand batteries can be describe as .
    A. robbing Peter to pay Paul
    B. barking up the wrong tree
    C. putting the cart before the horse
    D. killing two birds with one stone

Birdwatching is a fun hobby for many people. 36 They take photos and record the birds’ sounds to learn about their behavior.
Prayitno Goenarto, 31, is an experienced birdwatcher and wildlife photographer from Indonesia. When he was a college student, he got sick for a while. His doctor advised him to go outdoors more often. He then decided to watch birds and take photos of them.
Once, he took a photo of a small songbird. Knowing little about birds, he labeled it as a sparrow online. Soon, someone corrected him. The bird was actually a finch. This embarrassing incident led Goenarto to check out a field guide. 37
“Birdwatching has helped me in ways beyond what I could imagine.” Goenarto recalled. His life slows down. He makes new friends. He also encounters (遇见)bird species he didn’t know about.
“ 38 Especially if you have placed a lot of effort into finding the bird—learning the bird’s song, habitat, ecology, and reviewing sightings. ” he said. “ I feel my heart race, my eyes widen and almost automatically(自动地) I start to smile.”
One of the highlights(最精彩的部分) of his career was a trip to a faraway island to search for a rare bird species. The journey was hard. It rained heavily every afternoon. He was cold and wet for nearly the entire trip.
39 “ Each day was as exciting as the next as almost all the birds I saw were new to me.” he said.
Besides watching, Goenarto also takes photos and records sounds on field trips. Such photos of birds or other animals can help raise awareness to protect animals.“ 40 ” Goenarto said. “ They inspire people to learn more about what is out there and why it’s worth saving.”

It is said that the best time of playing the piano is when he or she is a kid. But when Max came to his first piano lesson in his mother’s car, he was already 11 years old. I preferred students begin at an earlier age, but due to his insistence(坚持), I took him as a student. As much as Max tried, he lacked the sense of tone and basic rhythm. At the end of each lesson, he’d say, “My mom’s going to hear me play someday. ” But it seemed hopeless. I only knew his mother from a distance as she waited in her aged car, but never stepped in.
After 2 months, one day Max didn’t come to our lessons any more. I thought about calling him but assumed, because of his lack of ability, that he had decided to quit. I also was glad that he stopped coming — he was a bad advertisement for my teaching!
Later, in order to celebrate the New Year, I mailed to the students’ homes a letter on the upcoming concert. Surprisingly, Jackie received and asked me if he could be in the concert. I told him that the concert was not for dropouts(辍学者), but for current pupils. He said that his mom had been sick and unable to take him to piano lessons but he was still practicing. I didn’t know what led me to agree eventually.
At the concert night, the hall was packed with parents and friends. I put up Max last in the program. I thought that any damage he would do would come at the end of the program and the negative effect would reduce to the least.
Surprisingly, the concert went off successfully. Then Max came up on stage. His clothes were wrinkled and his hair looked messy. “Why didn’t his mother at least make him comb his hair for this special night? ” I thought.
    注意:
    1. 续写词数应为150左右;
    2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
