The most beautiful buildings in Melbourne
State Library of Victoria
Melbourne’s central library was set up in 1854, making it one of the first free public libraries in the world. Architect Joseph Reed was behind the design. The first stage of the library opened in 1856, with a collection of 3,800 books, and included most of the front wing and the Queen’s Hall reading room.
National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) International
This grand modernist building on St Kilda Road is Australia’s oldest and most popular art museum. The NGV International building by architect Roy Grounds opened in 1968. The gallery is known for its top-ranking exhibition (which includes a Rembrandt, a Bonnard and Tiepolo), and fantastic painting collections (before we’ve seen exhibitions devoted to Van Gogh, and Monet).
Melbourne’s GPO
The building began construction in 1859 and took the next five decades to construct. American architect Walter Burley Griffin redesigned the sorting hall into a public hall around 1919. The space functioned as a post office for most of the 20th century until 1993 when Australia Post decided it wanted to move its post office functions into smaller shopfronts. Many commercial ideas were put forward, though none came to fruition until 2001, when it was hired by developers with the goal of turning it into a shopping center.
Manchester Unity Building
Marcus Barlow designed the twelve-storey concrete-covered steel structure which reached the building height limit of 132 feet. Construction was put off because of the Great Depression but began early in 1932 and builders worked around the clock in eight-hour shifts to make sure that the ground and first floors were open for trade by September that same year. The ground floor was home to 23 shops. On the 12th floor there was a rooftop garden cafe fitted with a fountain, pond and Japanese palms, and the basement served as a tea room and cafe.
1. What can we learn about the building Melbourne’s GPO?
A. Its construction lasted about 50 years.
B. It’s close to Manchester Unity Building.
C. It was specially designed to be a shopping center.
D. It is the most popular shopping center in Australia.
2. Whose design was the oldest building of the four?
A. Joseph’s. B. Roy’s. C. Walter’s. D. Marcus’s.
3. A painting fan is most likely to visit ________.
A. State Library of Victoria B. NGV International
C. Melbourne’s GPO D. Manchester Unity Building

Growing pains and gains
It's not easy to grow up. Actually it's far from easy. Growing up can be a real "pain" for some of us. We are always doing things that someone else makes us do and aren't allowed to do all the things we like. Sometimes we feel trapped, sometimes we are fearful, and sometimes we just don't understand why we can't stay young forever. When we look back on all the hardships in life with a positive attitude(态度), we realize that all of our growing pains actually turn into growing gains!
As a young girl my parents forced my sisters and me to do so many things that I never liked. They made me learn to play the violin and then the piano. At that time I hated music, just because it was what they wanted me to do. But looking back now, I am so glad that my parents encouraged me to take music lessons. Music has enriched my life in so many ways. I realize that my parents and teachers were always pushing me along, not because they wanted me to suffer but because they wanted me to succeed in life. They've always wanted me to have a better life than they did themselves.
Every moment of our lives we are either living or dying, so live life to its fullest! We are all going to experience growing pains, but they are just small pains in life. They might seem so huge at the time but we must be strong. Think about how we would feel if we had no fear and live life like that. The future is ours!
A little hard work and sweat never hurt anyone! If we realize that these pains are just small bumps(凸块)on our road to success we will realize that our growing pains are actually growing gains!
4. According to Paragraph 1, we learn that when we are young, ________.
A. life is full of joy
B. life is easy for us
C. we know we can stay young forever
D. we sometimes can’t do things we like
5. When the author was young, she was forced by her parents to ________.
A. take music lessons
B. turn gains into pains
C. look back on hardships
D. live a successful life by suffering a lot
6. What does the underlined phrase "to its fullest" mean?
A. Directly. B. Completely.
C. Carefully. D. Terribly.
7. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. Growing pains are necessary for us to grow up.
B. We all have to experience growing pains.
C. A little hard work and sweat are harmful to us.
D. Life without fear is a better choice for us.
【答案】4. D 5. A 6. B 7. A
We are always doing things that someone else makes us do and aren't allowed to do all the things we like"可知,小时候,有时我们不能做自己喜欢的事情,故D项正确。
【5题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中的"At that time I hated music"及"But looking back now,I am so glad that my parents encouraged me to take music lessons"可知,作者小时候,她的父母强迫她上音乐课,故A项正确。
【6题详解】
词义猜测题。根据画线词前的“Every moment of our lives we are either living or dying”可知,我们的生活只存在两种状态—生或死,所以我们要充分过好我们的人生,由此可知画线词词义为“充分地”,故B项正确。
C
A roadside system that detects if a mobile phone is in use in a passing vehicle is being tested in the UK first. Despite being unable to tell whether the driver is using the phone, it is hoped that it will act as a warning to people who make calls behind the wheel. The technology picks up the phone signal in the vehicle and activates(激活) a roadside warning sign of a mobile phone with a red line through it.
The system can’t tell the difference between a driver and a passenger on a bus, but to some degree it can warn drivers that they can be detected using their phones. Using a directional antenna(天线),the detector picks up radio waves produced by a phone handset , and measures the signal strength and length of them. When a signal is detected of duration(持续时间) long enough and signal strength strong enough to set off the system, the detector activates the warning sign. The detector is able to distinguish Bluetooth connections or hands- free devices which, when picked up,will prevent the activation.
While this new system is no replacement for a police officer catching someone in the act, it could be enough to make some drivers think twice- and that has to be a positive step forward. However, just as technology has enabled the problem of drivers using mobile phones illegally, it can also be a big part of the solution in getting people to stop. Statistics from the devices will be shared with Norfolk Police, the county council said. The council said that enabling the system to record specific number plates could be a“future development”.
Using a mobile phone at the wheel is one of the four road crimes which can have horrible consequences if it causes a deadly or serious car crash. Law enforcement(执行) technology has been falling behind for a decade and not made any easier by motor producers that encourage users to plug in their phones even before driving.
8. What is the function of the roadside system according to Paragraph 1?
A. To collect information for future use.
B. To send out cellphone signals to drivers.
C. To detect passengers' wrong use of phones.
D. To warn people against using pones while driving.
9. How does the detector of the roadside system work?
A. It measures the length of the phone.
B. It warns drivers with a phone in hand.
C. It picks up radio waves from handsets.
D. It activates the vehicle's Bluetooth system.
10. What does the text suggest drivers do with the road warning sign?
A. Swift to Bluetooth while driving.
B. Have a close watch of road signs.
C. Avoid being picked up by detectors.
D. Stop using a hands- free mobile phone.
11. What will the county council probably do in the future?
A. Share the devices with the police.
B. Make the system more advanced.
C. Replace the police with the new system.
D. Take steps to settle road safety problems.
【答案】8. D 9. C 10. A 11. B

One might expect that the ever-growing demands of the tourist trade would bring nothing but good for the countries that receive the holiday-makers. Indeed, a rosy picture is painted for the long-term future of the holiday industry. Every month sees the building of a new hotel somewhere. And every month another rock-bound Pacific island is advertised as the ‘last paradise (天堂) on earth’.
However, the scale and speed of this growth seem set to destroy the very things tourists want to enjoy. In those countries where there was a rush to make quick money out of sea-side holidays, over-crowded beaches and the concrete jungles of endless hotels have begun to lose their appeal.
Those countries with little experience of tourism can suffer most. In recent years, Nepal set out to attract foreign visitors to fund developments in health and education. Its forests, full of wildlife, and rare flowers, were offered to tourists as one more untouched paradise. In fact, the nature all too soon felt the effects of thousands of holiday-makers traveling through the forest land. Ancient tracks became major routes for the walkers, with the consequent exploitation (开采) of precious trees and plants.
Not only can the environment of a country suffer from the sudden growth of tourism. The people as well rapidly feel its effects. Farmland makes way for hotels, roads and airports; the old way of life goes. The one-time farmer is now the servant of some multi-national organization; he is no longer his own master. Once it was his back that bore the pain; now it is his smile that is exploited. No doubt he wonders whether he wasn’t happier in his village working his own land.
Thankfully, the tourist industry is waking up to the responsibilities it has towards those countries that receive its customers. The protection of wildlife and the creation of national parks go hand in hand with tourist development and in fact obtain financial support from tourist companies. At the same time, tourists are being encouraged to respect not only the countryside they visit but also its people.
The way tourism is handled in the next ten years will decide its fate and that of the countries we all want to visit. Their needs and problems are more important than those of the tourist companies. Increased understanding in planning world-wide tourism can preserve the market for these companies. If not, in a few years’ time the very things that attract tourists now may well have been destroyed.
12. What does the author indicate in the last sentence of Paragraph 1?
A. The Pacific island is a paradise. B. The Pacific island is worth visiting.
C. The advertisement is not convincing. D. The advertisement is not impressive.
13. The example of Nepal is used to suggest__________.
A. its natural resources are untouched B. its forests are exploited for farmland
C. it develops well in health and education D. it suffers from the heavy flow of tourists
14. What can we learn about the farmers from Paragraph 4?
A They are happy to work their own lands.
B. They have to please the tourists for a living.
C. They have to struggle for their independence.
D. They are proud of working in multi-national organizations.
15. The author’s attitude towards the development of the tourist industry is___________.
A. optimistic B. doubtful C. objective D. negative
【答案】12. C 13. D 14. B 15. C

52. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整短文。
As a young boy, I was always a troublemaker and up to no good. I liked playing tricks and enjoyed treating animals in an unfriendly way, like running after cats crazily, making them scared at the sight of me. Besides, I often used a handmade catapult (弹弓) to shoot at birds on the trees.
All this did afford me indescribable pleasure but also got me unkind stares and blames from people around. My parents disapproved of my behavior and were constantly criticizing me for the tricks I played. I was even given a good beating from my father from time to time. Nevertheless, I ignored their warnings and did not correct my ways until an incident occurred.
One summer noon when I was eight, I was alone at home and just finished lunch. Feeling very hot and bored, I decided to hang around the neighborhood, holding my trusty catapult.
Soon, I came to Mr Smith’s house. His pet dog, big and strong, was tied to a post outside his house, lying in the shade lazily. Looking around, I found that no one was in sight. I decided to make good use of my catapult to play tricks on the massive dog. Picking up a few small stones from the ground, I aimed at the dog and fired them one by one. Several stones hit the poor dog and it began to bark (吠) loudly in pain and jump up and down. But I felt so fun that I didn’t stop doing so. Eventually, the dog’s anger was fueled and it barked wildly at me while struggling to break away from the rope. Not realizing anything wrong with my crazy behavior, I was just laughing happily.
Suddenly, the rope that tied the dog loosened and the big dog got free from its bonds. In no time, with a few powerful steps the dog was on me. Its sharp teeth sank into my leg. I screamed with pain and fright and fell to the ground, shouting out for help.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Luckily, my miserable shouts caught Mr Smith’s attention.

His words left me ashamed and I decided to make a change.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
Luckily, my miserable shouts caught Mr Smith's attention. He dashed out of the house and freed the dog's teeth from my leg. Having caged the dog, Mr Smith rushed me to the clinic, where the doctor gave me an injection and dressed the wound carefully. On the way back home, I tearfully told Mr Smith the whole story. Not criticizing me, he looked me in the eye and said lovingly, “Animals are our friends that need our care and love and will treat us well if treated well".
His words left me ashamed and I decided to make a change. Instead of playing tricks on helpless animals, I did what I could to take care of them. With my father's help, I became a volunteer in our local animal shelter, feeding or walking animals. I even set aside my pocket money to contribute to charity which helps save homeless animals. Once a troublemaker, later a caregiver, I gradually won people's praise and respect I hadn't experienced before. Most importantly, never did I feel so rewarded and honored for what I did for animals.
