Whether yu're likely t chse cffee r green tea fr yur mrning bst culd be determined by yur genes, a recent study fund.
T examine genetic assciatins with fd preferences, researchers studied the genetic data and fd preferences f mre than 160,000 peple in Japan. The research fund genetic links fr 13 dietary habits including cnsumptin f alchl, ther drinks and fds, and als cmplex human diseases such as cancer and diabetes.
"We knw that what we eat defines what we are, but we fund that what we are als defines what we eat,"said Yukinri Okada, wh is ne f the researchers.
The researchers used data frm the BiBank Japan Prject, launched in 2003 with a gal t prvide evidence fr the implementatin f persnalized medicine. The prject cllects DNA and clinical infrmatin, including items related t participants' lifestyles such as dietary habits, which were recrded thrugh interviews and questinnaires.
They fund nine genetic lcatins that were assciated with cnsuming cffee, tea, alchl, ygurt, cheese, natt, tfu, fish, vegetables and meat. Thse wh ate mre fish, natt, tfu and vegetables had a genetic variant that made them mre sensitive t umami tastes, best described as savry r "meaty" flavrs. In rder t find whether any f these genetic markers assciated with fd were als linked with disease, the researchers cnducted a phenme study. Six f the genetic markers assciated with fd were als related t at least ne disease phentype, including several types f cancer as well as type 2 diabetes.
Given all the findings that genetic differences influence nt nly respnses t fds but preferences as well, experts think cnsidering them can help nutritinists persnalize diets t each persn's needs and tastes while still hitting nutritinal requirements.
