This year’s judging group of the Royal Society have just revealed the shortlist of four titles for the year’s Science Book Prize, each providing little-known subjects and fresh insight on global issues. Read on to find out why they’re four of the most interesting non-fiction books of the year!
The Last Stargazers by Emily Levesque
In this fascinating release it describes people willing to cross mountaintops and the most remote areas of the world, all in the name of science. It ranges from the world’s most powerful telescopes to wild bears running loose in an observatory (天文台)—recommended for anyone who enjoys gazing upward at the night sky.
    Breath by James Nestor
This book offers facts on our breathing, and how even the smallest of changes can have profound health benefits. Nestor looks at athletic performance, snoring and even thousands of years of ancient wisdom on the topic of simply breathing in and out.
The End of Bias by Jessica Nordell
In this timely release, journalist and author Jessica Nordell looks at unconscious bias, weaving fascinating stories and offering real-life solutions to some of the problems in our own society. From issues within the police force to how we teach children under five, this book will leave you with a whole new outlook on how to tackle the issue of bias head on. The Sleeping Beauties by Suzanne O’Sullivan

Nov.25—At 9 years old Tyler Armstrong hopes to set a new record by climbing to the top of Argentina’s Mount Aconcagua. At 22,841 feet, Aconcagua is the tallest mountain in the Western and Southern Hemispheres.
The fourth grader from Yorba Linda, California, is no stranger to tall summits. Last year, he became the second youngest person to conquer Mount Kilimanjaro. And at the age of 7, he became the youngest person to climb Mount Whitney in a day.
But Aconcagua will be the toughest for Tyler. It is an icy two-week climb, and temperatures can drop to minus 20 degrees Celsius, or minus 4 degrees Fahrenheit. Nevertheless, for Tyler, the most exciting part is going to be reaching the top and having the world record. As a father, Armstrong is quite aware of the risks associated with a climb of this magnitude but believes Tyler is ready. “There are dangers to climbing any mountain, but he’s taken the proper training, and he’s proven that he can do it.” Armstrong was proud of his son, and admitted he gets tired trying to keep up with Tyler. “Tyler’s taking me to a whole new level. I never dreamed I’d be doing this stuff. I hate the cold weather, so Tyler’s taking me places that I never thought I’d be going to. We both enjoy the father-son bonding time our adventures bring.”
Tyler is also climbing with a mission—he’s raising money and awareness for the organization Cure Duchenne, a form of muscular dystrophy (肌肉萎缩症) that affects 300,000 boys worldwide. They can’t walk, and that’s like the opposite of Tyler, so he wants them to climb with him when there is a cure. Before Tyler’s trek up Aconcagua even begins, he’s already eyeing his next mountain. “If I want to do it, I’ll do Mount McKinley in Alaska,” he said.
4、Which of the following can best describe Tyler?
    A. Generous. B. Fearless. C. Creative. D. Considerate.
5、What will be the top challenge for Tyler to meet?
    A. Mount Kilimanjaro. B. Mount Aconcagua.
    C. Mount Whitney. D. Mount McKinley.
6、What additional mission does Tyler shoulder during the journey?
    A. Setting a world record. B. Taking intensive training.
    C. Improving parent-child relationship. D. Collecting money for charity
7、What can we infer from the passage?
    A. Tyler has an impact on his father.
    B. Tyler has set a target for his next climb.
    C. Tyler is the youngest to climb Mount Whitney.
    D. Tyler’s father disapproves of his mountain climbing
It is estimated that at least 10% of the world’s population is learning disabled. Learning disabilities affect the way that a person learns. Someone is said to have a learning disability when his ability to learn is lagging behind.
Being learning disabled may mean that a person requires a little extra guidance and time to learn some material. It does not mean that the person is not able to learn. It just means that it will take a little bit longer. The brain of a person with the learning disability is structured slightly different from the brains of other people. It is physical damage that affects learning.
Learning disabled individuals may suffer from one or more sensory inputs problems. These individuals cannot deal with physical sensations correctly. So they may dislike the way certain things feel. Someone with a learning disability may also have difficulty processing information or correctly expressing the thoughts, which makes traditional academic test challenging.
Being learning disabled does not change who a person is, and neither does it affect what a person is capable of. Many people go through their lives without ever realizing they have a learning disability. There are ways to get around almost any challenges that a learning disability presents, through the use of any number of specialized tools or techniques. An IEP or Individual Education Plan will be written up for students who are diagnosed with a learning disability. It will offer details of what the disability is and what steps the school, parents and students can take to reduce the negative effects on the disability.
There are many famous people with a learning disability throughout the history. Albert Einstein, Wolfgang Mozart, Woodrow Wilson, Magic Johnson and Walt Disney all had learning disabilities. But none of them allowed the disability to prevent them from becoming who they wanted to become.
    8、What results in learning disability?
    A. Lack of guidance. B. Difficult materials.
    C. Mental disease. D. Some physical problem.
9、What’s the main topic of paragraph 3?
    A. Types of physical sensations. B. The origin of learning problems.
    C. Measures to deal with inputs problems. D. The consequences of learning disability.
10、What does the underlined “get around” mean in the text?
    A. Handle. B. Launch. C. Refuse. D. Avoid.
11、Why are the celebrities mentioned in the last paragraph?
    A. To prove the power of ambition.
    B. To introduce some well-known people.
    C. To inspire people with learning disability.
    D. To stress the risk of learning disability.
Six years ago, as the Paris Accord was agreed at the 21st UN climate conference, the French hosts wisely insisted on an item urging countries to match promises with deeds.
Having committed to try to hold global temperature rises “well below” 2℃ compared to preindustrial times, governments were commanded to produce updated plans in 2020, showing how they would actually achieve that goal.
This year’s extreme weather events—the terrible heatwaves, wildfires and floods that have made headlines across the globe—are evidence that the destructive consequences of global heating are happening faster than expected and on a larger scale. The world today is 1.1-1.2℃ hotter than in the preindustrial era. Heating beyond 1.5℃ would deliver even more devastating droughts and crop failures. It would increase the chances of greater famine and ecosystem collapse.
The European Union has suggested new law on industrial emissions, transport and carbon-intensive imports, designed to cut emissions to 55% below 1990 levels by 2030. These moves reflect a delayed sense of urgency; but time is running out in the race to close the gap between the total emissions cuts proposed by countries and the level actually required.
Cop26 is unlikely to produce the drama of a Paris-style breakthrough; but it must pave the way for concerted global action to speed up emissions cuts. Concrete measures are required in areas such as consuming less coal, reducing methane gas emissions preserving forests and lands, and financing climate improvement in developing nations.
What is done and left undone this decade will determine the fate of future generations. As a UN pre-summit spokesman put it last week, “Eight years to make the plans, put in place the policies, carry out them and ultimately deliver the cuts. The clock is ticking loudly.”
12、What is the purpose of the first paragraph?
    A. To make a comparison. B. To lead in the topic.
    C. To introduce the Paris Accord. D. To present an idea.
13、What is the major cause of extreme weather events?
    A. Industry development. B. Crop failures.
    C. Global warming. D. Ecosystem destruction.
14、How is the task of emissions cuts according to the spokesman?
    A. Impossible. B. Urgent. C. Vital. D. Hopeful.
15、What’s the best title of this passage?
    A. High time to cut emissions now B. The 26th UN climate conference
    C. Measures to reduce emissions D. Global action to save the world

Having marched across the grassland for five days, General, Chen Geng (陈赓) was dragging his exhausted body carefully step by step, leading his weak horse.
He suddenly saw the figure of a small boy appear. Chen Geng was about to greet the little Red Army soldier when he saw that the boy was staggering (蹒跚) and then fell down. Chen Geng hurried forward a few steps and helped the little soldier back on his feet. He asked the boy in a kind tone, “Are you all right?” The little soldier turned around. His face was pale and bloodless, with the two eyes unusually wide as a result of hunger, yet shining with spirit.
“You must be...General Chen Geng!” the little soldier recognized the man.
“Yes, I am Chen Geng. How are you, young man? You certainly have to be careful crossing this swampy grassland. One careless slip, and you can find yourself in danger. It is essential that we come out of this grassland alive.”
The little soldier nodded in agreement. “Don’t worry, General,” he said. “I’m physically strong.” In spite of the boy’s confident reply, Chen Geng was still worried about him. He could see that the little soldier lacked energy: could this child pull through the trials?
General Chen Geng ordered the little soldier to mount his horse, intending to give him a rest. But to his surprise, the boy refused him with a look of annoyance, “What! Do you think I’m not good enough?” the boy cried. “I’m stronger than you. If you don’t believe me, let’s have a contest.”
At that time, Chen Geng was too exhausted to engage in a contest of energy. All he could do was take a barley dumpling (青稞面), and say to the little soldier, “Well, here, have it!” But the boy simply smiled, saying, “You keep it. I have more food than you have,” pointing to a bulging (鼓鼓的) black bag he was carrying on his back.

④根据上一句“There is also nutrition that has a negative effect on your brains.(还有一些营养对你的大脑有负面影响)”和下一句“Have only fruit as much as you want before you do your test and avoid the brain blocking foods like white flour, refined white sugar, meat and dairy(在考试之前,只吃你想吃的水果,避免吃白面粉、精制白糖、肉类和奶制品等会阻塞大脑的食物)”可知,还有一些营养对大脑有负面影响,白面粉、精制白糖、肉类和奶制品等会阻塞大脑的食物,因此,E选项“The big trick is to consume fruit effectively (最大的诀窍是有效地食用水果)”切题,该选项承上启下,且选项中的“trick”对应下文中的“Have only fruit”。故选E项。
⑤根据上文“This forms a sticky substance in the intestines (肠道) that costs much energy to digest. Much blood has to be sent to the digestive system(这在肠道中形成一种粘性物质,这需要消耗大量能量来消化。大量血液必须输送到消化系统)”, 承接上文,D选项“As a result, it cannot be sent to your head. (因此,它无法发送到您的头部)”切题,该选项与上文构成因果关系,吃那些阻塞大脑的食物,大量血液必须输送到消化系统而不能到达头部,因此,对大脑有负面影响。故选D项。

    32、答案:①officially②that③is meant④more complex⑤a⑥varieties⑦but/yet⑧driven⑨to⑩to be
由后面的than可知,此处应用形容词complex(复杂的)的比较级more complex,故填more complex。
空前句子"biang biang were less known outside of Xi'an"(biangbiang 面在西安以外的地方鲜为人知)和空后句子"they were a comforting and beloved food among locals"(在当地人心目中,biangbiang面是一种令人欣慰的美食)前后是转折关系,应用表示转折关系的连词but或yet,故填but或yet。
到……",故填to。
Expect to do是固定搭配,表示"预计做某事",故填to be。

In the end, Chen Geng gave in, mounted his horse and rode on. And the little soldier followed him. Although the little soldier was weak, he tried his best to move on step by step. Suddenly, he was stumbled by a brunch. Chen Geng at once got down from his horse and helped him stand up. At that time, Chen Geng said to him, “You must have a rest and eat something, which can make you have strength. You are so weak that if you continue to move on, you will be easy to sink in a swamp. It’s my order.” Then Chen Geng took down the boy’s bag.
He opened the boy’s backpack, only to find a bundle of bark (树皮). And immediately the little soldier took back the bag and hid it. But Chen Geng had already seen the bark. With tears welling up in his eyes, Chen Geng gave the little soldier a barley dumpling. But the little soldier refused. Again, Chen Geng ordered the boy to have it. The little soldier had to take it and was very grateful. Then he gobbled the dumpling. After that, he felt energetic and then continued to march on with General, Chen Geng.
    ①前进:move on/advance/go forward
    ②休息:have a rest/ take a rest
    ③命令:order/command
    ①感谢的:be grateful /be thankful/show one’s gratitude
[高分句型1] You must have a rest and eat something, which can make you have strength.(运用了which引导的非限定性定语从句)
[高分句型2] You are so weak that if you continue to move on, you will be easy to sink in a swamp.(运用了“so…that+句子”句型,表示“如此……以至于”)
