The Most Beautiful Seas in the World
Considering the most beautiful seas, it's worth paying attention to the southern water bodies, although, without doubt, each sea is attractive and charming in its own way.
The most beautiful sea in the world--Coral Sea
If we consider the beauty of the seas, and not their coasts, then the first place should be given to the Coral Sea. The Coral Sea is a dangerous place for sailors, and at the same time one of the most beautiful places for diving, and all this is due to the unique coral reefs that are at its bottom.
    The second place--Red Sea
The Red Sea is a truly magnificent place. It has rich fish stocks, a huge number of amazing creatures live in it, and the underwater world is exceptionally rich. Many corals live only here, and divers are strictly forbidden to break them.
    The third place--Caribbean
This is the warmest exotic(异域风情的)place where not only the sea but also the plants on its coast please the eye. It's located between North and South America, and on its shore there are a number of small countries. Many tourists come here, because rest here is inexpensive, and you can experience different cultural traditions.
    The fourth place--Bali Sea
The Bali Sea is located in the Pacific Ocean. This is another paradise(天堂)for relaxation, receiving many tourists every season. The sea has a warm climate, creating ideal conditions for relaxing on the islands of Java, Sulawesi, Sumbawa, Madura.
    21. For which group of people is the Coral Sea most suitable?
    A. Visitors hoping for beautiful and relaxing coasts.
    B. Swimmers looking for the best swimming pools.
    C. Professional divers with advanced equipment.
    D. Young sailors hoping to find unique coral reefs.
    22. Where should you go if you like various sea creatures?
    A. Coral Sea. B. Red Sea. C. Caribbean. D. Bali Sea.
    23. Why do many visitors come to the Caribbean?
A.To appreciate different cultures with less cost.
    B. To look for more corals and the best places to dive.
    C. To admire how volcanoes erupt in a short distance.
    D. To relax on the islands of Java, Sulawesi and so on.
    B
I am Fionn Ferreira, an Irish teenager. I am very delighted to have won $50,000 for my project. My project came about as I was constantly hearing about plastic pollution on the news. And I also see the real effects on our beaches every day. I discovered, to my shock, that at present no filtration (过滤) for micro-plastics takes place in any European wastewater treatment centers, so I started looking for a solution.
Seeing that there was none, I decided to investigate further, finally finding a way to use the ferrofluid (铁磁流体), a liquid which sticks to the plastic allowing it to be removed using magnets. After over 1,000 tests I have proved that my method would remove 87% or higher of micro-plastics.
I grew up in West Cork, Ireland. My hometown is surrounded by untouched nature. This has been my primary inspiration about how nature works. I soon discovered that science really was in everything. The fact that I lived in such a remote place meant that I had to build my own equipment and lab to conduct tests and experiments.
Inspired by scientists such as Ben Feringa and his work with organic chemistry and nanotechnology (纳米技术), I would like to study chemistry or chemical engineering when finishing my last year of secondary school. Both of these subjects will be suited to me as I really enjoy problem-solving and experiments.
One of the most valuable rewards from the science fair for me is the opportunity to present my work to a group of professional judges. Winning the prize is a great honour to me as this is an acknowledgement of my project and ideas.
Also, winning the prize will give my project more attention. There is nothing I would like to see more than my project to be used in addressing micro-plastics in our oceans worldwide.
    24. What do we know about Fionn?

    A. He is studying at college. B. He lives by the sea.
    C. He works for a science fair. D. He was born in America.

    25. Why did Fionn set up the project?
    A. To purify the polluted air. B. To recycle micro-plastics in cities.
    C. To collect plastic wastes in water. D. To remove micro-plastics from water.
    26. Which of the following can be used to describe Fionn?
    A. Competitive. B. Creative. C. Optimistic. D. Humorous.
    27. What is Fionn looking forward to?
    A. Seeing his project applied widely in real life.
    B. Going to the science fair to get another prize.
    C. Attracting more attention to his project.
    D. Getting his project acknowledged by the judges.

    C
When Thomas Edison hit a wall with his inventions, he would nap in an armchair while holding a steel ball. As he started to fall asleep and his muscles relaxed, the ball would strike the floor, waking him with insights into his problems. Or so the story goes.
Thomas Edison was somewhat right. Now, more than 100 years later, scientists have repeated the trick in a lab, revealing that the famous inventor was on to something. People following his recipe tripled their chances of solving a math problem. The trick was to wake up in the transition between sleep and wakefulness, just before deep sleep. In this transitional period, we are not quite awake, but also not deeply asleep. It can be as short as a minute and occurs right when we start to doze off.
Researchers recruited more than 100 easy sleepers, each of whom was given a math test with a hidden rule for the answer. By recording brain activity, they found that those who napped and were interrupted during the first phase of sleep were three times better at finding the hidden key to the problem than those who remained awake.
The creative effect happened even for people who spent just 15 seconds in the first sleep stage. But the trick didn't work for those who reached later stages of sleep. "Our findings suggest there is a creative sweet spot during sleep onset," says author Delphine Oudiette, a sleep researcher at the Paris Brain Institute. "It is a small window which can disappear if you wake up too early or sleep too deep."
The study team also identified a brain activity pattern linked to the creativity-boosting phase: moderate levels of brain waves at a slow frequency known as alpha, associated with relaxation, and low levels of delta waves, a hallmark of deep sleep. Oudiette says researchers can now focus on this brain signature when investigating the neural mechanisms (神经机制) of creative problem-solving. The team has already planned an experiment to help people reach a creative zone by monitoring their brain waves in real time." Edison was great", Oudiette says, "and now we have a lot more to explore."
    28. What does the underlined phrase "was on to something" in paragraph 2 probably mean?
    A.Discovered the truth.
    B.Was absorbed in math puzzles.
    C.Started the experiment.
    D.Was engaged in laboratory work.
    29. According to the research, what is the trick of promoting creativity?
    A.gaining adequate deep sleep
B.discovering the hidden rules of problems
    C.following Edison's life style
D.waking up right after nodding off to sleep
    30. Why did the researchers record brain activity of the sleepers?
    A.To evaluate their sleep efficiency.
B.To measure their amount of sleep.
C.To assess their levels of intelligence.
D.To compare their creative thinking abilities.
    31. What is paragraph 5 mainly about?
A.Supporting evidence for the research results.
B.Potential application of the research findings.
C.A further explanation of the research methods.
D.A reasonable doubt about the research process.
    第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
    根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两为多余选项。
Extreme heat can kill people, even though most of the deaths are preventable. It is reported that in the 24 years between 1979 and 2003 more people died in the United States of extreme heat than from hurricanes, lightning, tornadoes, floods and earthquakes. 32 The golden rules are to drink plenty of water, dress in cool clothes and stay in the shade if possible.
33 Often after many months without rain, a single spark is all that is necessary to create a big fire. Wildfires can move at great speed and will destroy everything in their path. They can quickly change direction, which makes it very difficult for someone on the ground to escape. 34 In 2010 such fires in Russia killed 62 people and destroyed about 23, 000 square kilometers. A recent UN report suggests that the growing number of wildfires around the world may be contributing to global warming. 35 Climate change causes drought (干旱); drought causes wildfires; and wildfires cause further climate change.
36 This is probably due to a natural process, but it is reasonable to assume that this process is being sped up by mankind’s release into the atmosphere of large amounts of greenhouse gas.
    A.How can we survive it?
B.Extreme heat can also bring wildfires.
C.It is clear that the world is getting warmer.
D.Very often you can see such a terrible circle!
E.It is also reasonable to realize the man’s effect on the world’s weather.
F.How can people predict extreme heat according to the climate change?
G.Great damage can be caused in a short time if quick action is not taken.

Alex rode his bike on his way home, and Johnson’s Pond(池塘) came into view.
Sometimes his dad took him canoeing(划独木舟) there, and Alex loved it. The pond was always alive with activity, and sometimes Alex discovered turtles(乌龟) sunbathing on suing rocks Alex was curious about turtles. When it was too rainy to go canoeing, he often went to the library to check out books on turtles,
Now it looked like tomorrow might be another sunny day. He decided to ask Dad if they could go canoeing and look for turtles again. Suddenly Alex saw something in the road up ahead. It looked like a big gray rock. But it was a funny place for a rock to be. He jumped off to have a look.
And then, the rock started to move! It was actually a large turtle slowly making its way across the road! Alex knew right away it was a snapping turtle.
Out of the corner of his eye, he saw a car approaching. The turtle was still only halfway across the road. Alex knew he couldn’t pick it up because snapping turtles have a powerful bite and they could even bite off someone’s finger! What could he do?
Thinking fast, he started waving both hands wildly. “Stop! Stop!” he cried. The car slowed to a stop.
“Are you a light, Alex?” It was his neighbor, Mrs. Ramos.
“I’m fine, Mrs. Ram’s.” said Alex. “I’m just trying to save a turtle. It’s probably going to lay egg.”
“Oh, yeah. It’s spring.” said Mrs. Ram’s. “So, I guess a lot of turtles need to lay their eggs in the grass across the road.” Then she waved goodbye and drove off.
Alex thought about what Mrs. Ram’s had said. “There would probably be more turtles trying to cross the road at this spot!” he realized. But he couldn’t stand there all day trying to stop cars. He looked around and a road sign caught his eye. And then his face brightened.
He jumped on his bike and raced home to find Dad.
    __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The next morning, Dad and Alex drove to the pond with the wooden sign in the car.

    Dear Mr. Smith,
I'm writing to ask for your help. Our school is planning to hold an event called English Reading Month, in which we are required to read an English book and take notes.
I hope you can recommend an English book to me. Considering I'm not an advanced English learner, the book needs to be suitable for my level. It will be better if the book is about the life of teenagers. Meanwhile, I also feel confused about taking notes. Could you offer me some guidance?
I'd appreciate it if you could reply to me soon.
    Yours

He jumped on his bike and raced home to find Dad. “Dad can I have some old wood to make a wooden sign?” Alex asked eagerly. Hearing Alex’s full explanation, Dad then smiled knowingly. Then the father and son devoted themselves to cutting a wood board into the right “T” shape. After that, Alex wrote down a line with red paint on both sides of the sign, reading “Slow! Turtles Crossing!” Work all done, they put the wooden sign into their car and went for dinner.(75 words)
The next morning, Dad and Alex drove to the pond with the wooden sign in the car. Upon arriving, they sprang into action. Alex pulled the sign to the side of the road and held it tightly while Dad hammered it into the ground. Sweat dripping into their eyes, they worked with passion until the sign got fixed firmly in the ground. Alex stepped back and surveyed their work. “Slow! Turtles Crossing!” he read out loud and grinned. “Ready to go canoeing?” “Yes!” Alex blur ted out, rushing to the pond with pride.(75 words)

W: Yeah, I understand. I like hearing my parents’ voices too, but I don’t feel like I need to hear them every time we talk.
M: Hmm. Maybe I will get her kids to help. It’s a good idea.

    Text 9
W: Can I see your passport, please?
M: Is this line for non-residents?
W: Yes it is. Residents can queue up in the lines to my right.
    M: OK. Here’s my passport.
W: What’s the expiration date on your passport?
M: I think it’s coming up, maybe in a few months. It was renewed in Beijing, so the new expiration date is on the last page.
    W. I see. Yes, you’ll need to renew your passport in a few months. Make sure you don’t let it expire while you are in the UK.
    M: I won’t.
W: Do you have anything to declare?
M: No, I don’t have anything to declare.
W: How long will you be staying in the UK?
    M: I’ll be here about a year.
W: What is the purpose of your stay?
M: I’ll be studying. I’m doing an MBA at Nottingham University.
W: Where will you be staying?
M: I have a housing contract with the university. I’ll be in a dorm room on campus.
W: How do you plan on paying for your living costs and tuition fees while you are here?
M: My father has already paid for that in advance. Here are the receipts.
W: OK. Have a good stay. Here’s your passport and your documents.
    M: Thank you very much.
    Text 10
My way to stay young is simple: Give full attention to the part of you that’s young and growing---your brain. Keep your mind active and your body will stay young, too. These are exciting times. Take an interest in the world around you, and make a point of learning one new thing every day.
Never think about your age, it’s not too late to make your life more interesting. I know a house wife who became a famous industrial designer; I know a retired electrical engineer who has become a highly paid artist.
Get over the idea that you are too old to go back to college. I know I man who entered medical school at 70. He got his degree with honors and became a top doctor. Another man went to law school at 71 and is now an active lawyer.
Even if you are getting on in years, staying young is easy for those who live for the future. You can do it if you care enough to try. Keep your mind alive and active; this is the key to staying young, and it will certainly work.

M: Our football team has just won the championship match!
W: Wow, we have become the league champion for the fourth time!
    M: Cheers!
    Text 2
W: Do you often listen to the radio?
M: Yeah. I listen to the radio every morning.
W: What programs do you usually listen to?
M: Programs about what happened at home and abroad.
    Text 3
W: Look at those colorful birds over there. I think you can teach them to sing.
M: But look at the price! I’d rather have a cat.
    Text 4
W: Mike, how are you getting along with your homework?
M: I have been doing it for two hours. I don’t know if I’ll be able to get it finished.
    W: Take it easy.
    Text 5
M: Pardon me, Miss. Do you have change for a dollar?
W: I’m afraid not, you’ll have to ask someone else.
    Text 6
W: Excuse me, I’m looking for the …are you the manager?
M: Yes, I am. What can I do for you?
W: I bought this yesterday, but I didn’t look at the receipt until today—and I’m shocked that I didn’t get the discount that you were advertising. I thought that this item would be 25% off!
M: May I have a look? Hmm…it says it was checked out on register four---that’s Heather. She is new on staff, so she probably didn’t know about the sale. I’m very sorry about that. I’ll fix the problem right away and get you some cash.
W: Thanks very much. I’ll just be waiting over there.
    Text 7
M: Oh, dear, I suppose it’s time to start thinking about the summer holidays again. The papers are full of travel articles.
W: They always are at this time of year. Do you have somewhere in mind?
M: I just think it would be nice to go somewhere different, for example, Tibet.
W: Where? Tibet? But it is quite far away. It will cost a lot.
M: But I’d like to go somewhere out-of-the-way. Somewhere where there aren’t many tourists. I haven’t been to Tibet, but some people I know told me it’s a wonderful place for a holiday.
W: You might have trouble with food and water.
M: Oh, that won’t be a problem. I can get some information from the travel agency and see what they are offering. Are you coming with me?
W: I’d be quite happy to stay at home and work in the garden. I want to build a path.
    Text 8
W: Do you keep in touch with your aunt in America?
M: Sure, I usually call her once a month.
W: That sounds kind of expensive.
    M: Yeah, a little, I guess.
W: Do you ever have the desire to chat online?
M: Sure. But my aunt is a little older and not really into using the computer.
W: But surely she would want to save a little money. You said she has kids. They must have a computer in the house. You could get one of her kids to teach her how to use the Internet.
