An old story goes that once there were four single men, leading very boring lives. None of them were married, or had lovers, or did anything exciting. They just sat around all day and played Mahjong (麻将).One day they played Mahjong from 11 in the morning until 11 at night. During the game, no matter who won, the winning card was always the “four columns” card (the card shows four independent, parallel columns in two lines). Even more of a coincidence, it was November 11, or 11/11. In order to commemorate the day, they nicknamed it Singles Day.
Singles Day was first celebrated at various universities in Nanjing, capital city of Jiangsu Province during the 1990s. It got the name Singles Day because the date is comprised of four “ones”. These college students have since graduated, and carried their university tradition into society. Singles Day is now a special day for all fashionable youths.
The main way to celebrate Singles Day is to have dinner with your single friends, but it’s important thateach person should pay his own fee to show his independence. People also hold “blind date” parties in an attempt to bid goodbye to their single lives.
Many singles also choose to say goodbye to their single lives on this day. Many attend “blind date” parties and many people choose to marry on this day. In addition to meaning “Singles”, the four “ones“ of the date can also mean “only one” as in “the only one for me”. Some people will use this date and this meaning to tell their special someone that they are the only “one” in their hearts.
4. Singles Day got its name because________
A. the people who play Mahjong are four singles
B. only single person celebrates the day
C. the date is comprised of four “ones”
D. it was first celebrated at universities in Nanjing
5. Which of the following is WRONG?

B. Many singles choose Singles Day to say goodbye to their single lives.
C. The only way to celebrate the Singles Day is to have dinner with your single friends.
D. It was these college graduated students that carried their university’s tradition into society.
6. We can infer from the passage that________
A. the four singles don’t get married later on
B. Singles Day receives great popularity among young people
C. when having dinner, one pays the fee for all his friends
D. on Singles Day many attend parties where blind people were present
7. What is the best title for the passage?
A. The Origin of Singles Day

根据第一段的“Even more of a coincidence, it was November 11, or 11/11. In order to commemorate the day, they nicknamed it Singles Day.(更巧合的是,那天是11月11日。为了纪念这一天,他们给它起了个绰号叫“光棍节”。)”和“It got the name Singles Day because the date is comprised of four “ones”.(之所以叫“光棍节”,是因为这一天有四个“1”。)”
根据第三段的“The main way to celebrate Singles Day is to have dinner with your single friends(庆祝光棍节的主要方式是和你的单身朋友共进晚餐)”可知,和单身朋友共进晚餐是主要的庆祝方式而不是唯一的方式,因此C选项错误,故选C。

C
The twentieth century saw greater changes than anycentury before. Changes for the better, changes for the worse, changes that brought a lot of benefits to human beings, changes that put man in danger. Many things caused the changes, but, in my opinion, the most important was the progress in science.
Scientific research in physics and biology has vastly broadened our views. It has given us a deeper knowledge of the structure of matter and of the universe. It has brought us a better understanding of the nature of life and of its continuous development. Technology in the application of science has made big advances that have benefited us in nearly every part of life.
The continuation of such activities in the twenty-first century will result in even greater advantages to human beings; in pure science-a wider and deeper knowledge in all fields of5 learning; in applied science-a more reasonable sharing of material benefits, and better protection of the environment.
Sadly, however, there is another side to the picture. The creativity of science has been employed in doing damage to mankind. The application of science and technology to the development and production of weapons of mass destruction has created a real danger to the continued existence of the human race on this planet. We have seen this happen in the case of nuclear weapons. Although their actual use has so far occurred only in the Second World War, the number of nuclear weapons that were produced and made ready for use was so large that if the weapons had actually been used, the result could have been the ruin of the human race, as well as of many kinds of animals.
William Shakespeare said, “The web of our life is of a mingled yarm(纱线), good and ill together.” The above brief review of the application of only one part of human activities-science-seems to prove what Shakespeare said. But does it have to be so? Must the ill always go together with the good? Are we biologically programmed for war?
8. What can we learn from the fourth paragraph?
A. A great many nuclear weapons were actually used for war.
B. A large number of nuclear weapons should have been used for war.
C. The author is doubtful about the ruin of human beings by nuclear weapons.
D. The author is anxious about the huge number of nuclear weapons on the Earth.
9. What does the underlined word “mingled” most probably mean?
A. Simple.
B. Mixed.
C. Sad.
D. Happy.
10. What do you think the author is most likely to suggest if he continues to write?
A. Further application of science to war.
B. More reading of William Shakespeare.
C. Proper use of science in the new century.
D. Effective ways to separate the good from the ill.
11. Which of the following best shows the structure of the passage?
(① =“Paragraph”1②=“Paragraph”2,③=“Paragraph”3,④=“Paragraph“4,⑤=“Paragraph”5)
A. B. C. D.
D 9. B 10. D 11. A
根据文章第四段的“Although their actual use has so far occurred only in the Second World War, the number of nuclear weapons that were produced and made ready for use was so large that if the weapons had actually been used, the result could have been the ruin of the human race, as well as of many kinds of animals.(虽然到目前为止,核武器的实际使用只发生在第二次世界大战中,但生产和准备使用的核武器的数量是如此之多,如果这些武器真的被使用,其结果可能是毁灭人类和许多种类的动物)”可知,作者对世界上数量巨大的核武器表示担忧,故选D。
根据最后一段中“But does it have to be so? Must the ill always go together with the good? Are we biologically programmed for war?(但一定要这样吗?难道恶总是与善相伴吗?从生理上讲,我们天生就会打仗吗)”可知,科技发展有好有坏,是不是好坏并存,我们是不是出生就会打仗?所以作者接下来可能继续写的是将好和坏分开的有效方法。故选D。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章内容,第一段的最后一句话“Many things caused the changes, but, in my opinion, the most important was the progress in science(许多东西引起了这些变化,但是,在我看来,最重要的是科学的进步)”提出文章主题,根据第二段末句“Technology in the application of science has made big advances that have benefited us in nearly every part of life.(科学应用中的技术取得了巨大的进步,使我们几乎在生活的各个方面都受益)”和第三段首句“The continuation of such activities in the twenty-first century will result in even greater advantages to human beings(这种活动在二十一世纪继续下去将给人类带来更大的好处)”可知,这两段都讲了科技带来的好处,从正面印证了主题,而第四段首句“Sadly, however, there is another side to the picture.(然而,不幸的是,事情还有另一面)”中的Sadly和however表明文章转入另外一个方面的论证,而且是反面的论证,接下来最后一段用Shakespeare的话再次总结主题。 故选A。
D
There are 156 known species of glass frogs living throughout the neotropics. Recent advancements in genetics are giving researchers a revealing look into the lives of these one-inch-long tree dwellers, some of which are the size of a paper clip.
Scientists have discovered, for example, that male glass frogs in some species are stellar parents — a rare trait among vertebrates Males of at least 24 species not only protect their eggs from predators but also actively care for them. While the embryos (胚胎) develop, males of some species, such as the sun glass frog sit atop their egg clutch "like a chicken," keeping the eggs hydrated until they hatch into tadpoles (蝌蚪).
New research is also discovering how the glass frog's transparent belly forms. It's suspected that young glass frogs physically rearrange the insides of their cells and tissues to become transparent adults. Fluid between the tissue cells may also contain a substance that allows light to travel through.
Another mechanism that may allow glass frogs to blend into the green leaves on which they doze during the day is called "a biological mirror", a kind of shield or covering of crystals in many of their tissues, which reflects up to 30 percent of the light that normally reaches them. Those crystals amplify the light signal, and the frog's green looks brighter.
Many scientists studying glass frogs arc motivated by the fact that some of their subjects are disappearing—and fast. Agriculture, cattle grazing, and mining projects in the Andes are taking over the frogs' already fractured forest homes.
"As soon as they are discovered, many species are declared endangered," Guayasamin, a biologist in Ecuador, says "yet there could be an advantage in conserving such isolated ponulanons." All could be inspired to work together to set aside frog-rich patches of land as reserves, ensuring that these delicate creatures have a solid chance at survival.
12. What can we know about glass frogs?
A. They are regarded dangerous. B. They are small animals.
C. They are of different colors. D. They live in the water.
13. What does the underlined word "stellar" in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Strange. B. Ambitious.
C. Excellent. D. Different.
14. How can glass frogs hide themselves in the green leaves?
A. They physically change their cells. B. They contain transparent fluid.
C. Crystals in their tissues reflect light. D. Light signal makes them greener.
15. What is Guayasamin's suggestion for endangered glass frogs?
A. Stopping cattle grazing. B. Building frog reserves.
C. Improving frog popularity. D. Planting more forest trees.
B 13. C 14. C 15. B

根据第一段的“Recent advancements in genetics are giving researchers a revealing look into the lives of these one-inch-long tree dwellers, some of which are the size of a paper clip.(遗传学的最新进展让研究人员对这些一英寸长的树居者的生活有了一个透彻的了解,其中一些树居者的生活只有回形针那么大)”可知,玻璃蛙是一种小动物,故选B。
根据第二段的“Males of at least 24 species not only protect their eggs from predators but also actively care for them.(至少有24个物种的雄性不仅保护它们的卵免受捕食者的攻击,而且还积极照顾它们)”可知,雄性玻璃蛙是很优秀的父母,他们很好地保护自己的后代,因此划线词stellar的意思是“优秀的”,即Excellent,故选C。
根据倒数第三段的“Another mechanism that may allow glass frogs to blend into the green leaves on which they doze during the day is called "a biological mirror", a kind of shield or covering of crystals in many of their tissues, which reflects up to 30 percent of the light that normally reaches them.(另一种可以让玻璃蛙融入它们白天打瞌睡的绿叶中的机制被称为“生物镜”,这是它们许多组织中晶体的一种屏障或覆盖物,可以反射通常到达它们的30%的光)”可知,玻璃蛙能躲在绿叶中是因为它们组织中的晶体反射光线。
根据最后一段的“All could be inspired to work together to set aside frog-rich patches of land as reserves, ensuring that these delicate creatures have a solid chance at survival.(所有人都可以受到启发,共同努力,留出青蛙丰富的土地作为保护区,确保这些脆弱的生物有可靠的生存机会)”可知,Guayasamin对濒危玻璃蛙的建议是建立青蛙保护区。故选B。
