National Geographic Exhibit Titanic: The Untold Story

The National Geographic Museum is always an interesting and educational place to visit. The admission isnt free but is definitely worthwhile for unique exhibits like this. Well be taking a self-guided tour but there may also be museum staff on hand.

    About the exhibition

On this exhibition, you will be surprised to find that the sunken Titanic was discovered by Robert Ballard, who was then carrying out a top secret Cold War mission. In 1985, Ballards mission was to dive to depths of 9,800 feet using a camera system called Argo to find and document the exploded remains of the submarine Scorpion. The objective of the mission was to gain evidence to determine what led to her loss. After concluding his successful investigations, Ballard used the final 12 days of his expedition to discover the remains of Titanic.

The exhibitionoriginally exhibited at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and museum—shows the history of the discovery from an entirely new angle. Not only are visitors exposed to the historical events that led to the ships finding, but they can hear the fascinating stories of some of the passengers on board the ship. In addition to items borrowed from families of the survivors that have not been reunited since the night the ship sank in 1912, the exhibition contains those from the rich collections of the National Archives and the 20th Century Fox Archives. There are also movie sets and clothes worn by actors from the 1997 movie Titanic.

    22. What can visitors see in the exhibition?

    A. The survivors of Titanic.               B. The original design of Titanic.

    C. The movie about the ship Titanic.        D. The possessions of the survivors.

    23. If a retired couple takes their 4-year-old grandson to the exhibition, how much should they pay?

    A. $24.       B. $30.        C. $34.        D. $40.

    B

A few years ago, I stood in a small classroom just outside of New York City, watching a high schooler named Serena Stevenson answer math questions. An instructor read out numbers—74,470, 70,809, 98,402—and Stevenson added them in her head. For each question, she closed her eyes, and then the fingers of her right hand began to move. She answered most of the problems correctly.

The key to her success was an ancient technology called the abacus (算盘). For much of that evening, Stevenson used a practice called “mental abacus”, imagining the abacus in her mind and then using her fingers to work through the problems.

From watching Stevenson, I knew that gaining skill at the abacus was more than a matter of counting beads (珠子), so I decided to sign up for an abacus course with my two daughters to see if we could also improve our math skills. I was one of the many who harbored some math doubts and I felt a touch of fear. My typical solution was avoidance, and if I had to calculate something like a percentage change, I would go online.

Then after a few abacus classes and a good amount of practice, math seemed a little less frightening. I didn’t become Euclid, the founder of geometry (几何学). But the practice brought my numerical fears down. This is a time-tested power of the abacus. Confidence grows easily in the device, and abacus students are less likely to be nervous about an upcoming math test, according to one study. Part of the reason, it seems, is that practice and outcomes appear to move in step.

My kids gained much as well. My youngest daughter could work out those math problems that once baffled her, while my older child brought her abacus to school to show it to her classmates and teacher. These were just small successes for them, but that was how they finally developed confidence.

    24. What is the main purpose of the first paragraph?

    A. To prove the difficulty of math.

    B. To introduce the topic of the abacus.

    C. To show high intelligence of Stevenson.

    D. To stress the importance of abacus learning.

    25. What do we know about the author from paragraph 3?

    A. He had a close relationship with kids.   B. He regarded math as useful.

    C. He was good at computer.     D. He was weak in math.

    26. What does the author realize from his learning experience?

    A. Practice makes perfect.    B. Its never too late to learn.

    C. Faith can move mountains.   D. Knowledge starts with practice.

    27. What does the underlined word baffled in the last paragraph mean?

    A. Bored.   B. Inspired.   C. Interested.   D. Defeated.

    C

In the coming decade, space agencies and private space companies like SpaceX are planning to build a base on the Moon and Mars. While scientists are already building rockets for the journey, for long-term human settlements on them, astronauts will need fuel to carry out daily tasks. Many have suggested hydrogen. But a group of scientists is working on turning CO₂ in the atmosphere into jet fuel. As Mars is rich in CO₂and the lunar surface has a high concentration of CO₂, it may be a feasible solution.

For now, though, the team of scientists at the University of Oxford is focusing on making jet fuel for the aviation (航空) industry. As the aviation industry releases over 900 million tons of CO₂ every year, to battle climate change, it is necessary to turn the tide. So far aviation scientists have tried to use other energy resources like electricity to fly. But such flights are limited to short distances. For long-distance flights, there is no alternative yet.

The concept of turning CO₂ into jet fuel is not new. Previously, other similar methods had to rely on expensive catalysts (催化剂) like cobalt to speed up the chemical reaction. But what Oxford scientists suggest is adding a cheap iron-based catalyst and hydrogen to turn CO₂ into liquid fuel. As the process would not involve using fossil fuel, it will make the industry carbon neutral (碳中和的).

The scientists tested the new catalyst in a lab at 300°C and at 10 times the air pressure at sea level. The entire process took 20 hours and turned 38 percent of CO₂ into new chemicals. About 48 percent of the chemicals were jet fuel hydrocarbon and the rest were other by-products that are used in the production of plastic.

Professor Peter Edwards, a lead scientist in the project, said the new method could be improved in two to three years to produce jet fuel in large quantities. “This is a really exciting, potentially revolutionary advance. Our vision is that the world can see that CO₂ collected can be used as an energy carrier to enable sustainable aviation.”

    28. Which word can best explain “feasible” underlined in paragraph 1?

    A. Unique.    B. Practical.     C. Time-tested.     Quick.

    29. What problem does the aviation industry face?

      A. It is suffering from a serious fuel shortage.

      B. The traditional jet fuel leaves much to be desired.

      C. Climate change partly disturbs long-distance flights.

      D. Its alternative energy resources are not powerful enough.

    30. What do we know about the Oxford scientists method of fuel-making?

      A. It is green and cost-saving.

    B. It is complex and time-consuming.

      C. It undergoes tests in natural environment.

      D. It starts with immediate chemical reaction.

    31. Whats the most suitable title for the text?

      A. An urgency: finding alternatives to jet fuel

      B. A breakthrough: transforming CO₂ into jet fuel

      C. A warning: needing more fuel to explore space

      D. An attempt: fighting for long-term settlements in space

    D

Pieter Bruegel’s 1565 realistic painting The Harvesters hangs at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. “The work describes farmers cutting wheat nearly as tall as they are,” Ghent University biologist Ive De Smet says. “Nowadays, if you walk through a wheat field, you basically see wheat is about knee-high, which is a consequence of selective breeding from the second half of the 20th century.” De Smet says he’s teaming up with art historian David Vergauwen of Amarant to look at things where they can spot differences in shape, in color, and in size. Wheat is just one example of how historical artwork can help track the transformation of food crops over time.

Friends since childhood, their interest in plants in artwork began with a visit to the Hermitage Museum in Russiawhere they noticed an odd-looking watermelon in an early- 17th-century painting by Flemish artist Frans Snyders.

“So if you think of a watermelon, you cut it through, it should be dark red on the inside. But that one appeared to be pale and white.” De Smet assumed the painter had done a poor job. But Vergauwen said, “This is one of the best painters ever from that era. So if he paints it like that, that’s the way it must have been.” Other paintings showed that both red and white watermelons were raised during the 17th century.

The team hopes to set up an online research database of historical plant artwork. They create a social media hashtag (主题标签) for it. Anyone could send pictures of relevant artwork and details of plants when they visit a museum or exhibit through the hashtag. But, they adds, the sources need to be realistic. “If you’re going to use, for example, Picasso to understand how a pear looked, you might be misled.”

    32. What can we learn from De Smet’s words in paragraph 1?

    A. Humans have mainly fed on wheat since 1565.

    B. Selective breeding affects agricultural structure.

    C. Wheat has gone through great changes in height.

    D. The scene in The Harvesters may be unbelievable.

    33. What is Vergauwen’s attitude to the watermelon painted by Frans Snyders?

    A. Curious.   B. Disapproving.   C. Favorable.   D. Doubtful.

    34. Why was the social media hashtag created?

    A. To collect more source paintings.     B. To encourage people to focus on art.

    C. To advertise their research database.    D. To share some historical plant artwork.

    35. What is the text mainly about?

    A. Ancient paintings focus on food crops.

    B. Old art reveals agricultural information.

    C. Two men create a database of plant artwork.

    D. Plants today are different from their ancestors.

    Flex your memory muscles

Youll remember more if you use your body and your brain, says our memory expert, Hancock. Muscle memory is a powerful thing.   36  , our bodies operate instinctively (本能地), following long-formed, well-practised routines.

Today, for example, I decided to go home a different way from my morning run. I spotted the new road I wanted to take, headed towards it... and before I knew it, I was back at my front door—having gone exactly the same way I always did! Ill try again to take the scenic route next time. But muscle memory is actually a useful tool, and it can have a positive impact on your learning.   37  .

If youre learning your part in a play, or preparing to give a speech from memory, repeat the same actions whenever you run through lines. You can even add extra movement instructions to your script (脚本) to make sure that you do the same things each time.   38  .

To remember a tough spelling, try writing it out by hand.   39  , your muscle memory may well help you. Feel your way to forming the right pattern of letters again.

40  , connect it to a physical action thats already hard to change. For example, if you always reach for the coffee jar first thing in the morning, why not use that movement to remind you of something else—like the tablet you need to take at the same time every day?

    A. When youve got a regular to do task

    B. Without our conscious minds having much say

    C. If youve used this word—or one like it—in the past

    D. You can write again when youve really got something to remember

    E. Here are some suggestions for using muscle memory to your advantage

    F. These movements will become effective reminders for the words that go along with them

    G. My exercises can increase strength in certain parts of my body and improve muscle memory

    阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Ken Scott kicked off the covers and leapt out of bed at his home in the Rocky Mountain town of Mulan, Idaho. He’d just heard on the radio that the nearby Silver Mountain Resort had been blessed with nearly a foot and a half of new snow. As an experienced ski addict, he didn’t want to miss this big golden opportunity. These conditions are what skiers live for.

When Scott reached Silver Mountain’s locker room, he came across his friend Paul, a former ski instructor who had also been a regular on these slopes for more than two decades. Both of them were exhilarated. Before setting off, it was Paul’s routine to check his phone tightly fixed inside his parka (风雪外套). For the next hour the pair skied on various runs under a lightly dull sky, making fresh tracks. They were both in a playful mood, laughing as they tackled the steep runs.

Almost immediately, the snow beneath their feet gave way. In a millisecond, Paul realized what was happening. Avalanche! he yelled to Scott, who was not far behind. Scott responded. The sudden snow slide caused fear in his voice. This is happening! Instantly, both were hit by a mass of snow that would hit and carry them some 500 feet down the mountain. Scott felt it surrounding and enclosing him, moving quickly up his back and over his shoulders, then heavy against his neck. Snow filled the space in front of him and piled up around the whole of him. Paul, too, was swept downhill.

They remembered the avalanche survival lessons they had learned. Keep your head up. Try to swim. Stay on top of the snow. But the snow was too powerful and they felt themselves rolling like a load of clothes in a washing machine. When Scott finally came to rest, he was lying on his left side and completely buried, skis and poles still attached.

    注意:

    1. 所续写短文的词数应为150左右;
