Top Public Sculpture Parks to Visit in America
Kasmin Sculpture Garden (New York City)

Olympic Sculpture Park (Seattle)
This outdoor park was created by the nearby Seattle Art Museum and features a large red sculpture by Alexander Calder called Eagle, as well as Wake by Richard Serra. Since 2007, this waterfront park has brought creativity to Elliott Bay. The landscape design fits in with the local roads and skyline, facing the harbor in what’s recognized as Seattle’s largest downtown green space.

Born on July 1st, 1948, in the small Italian city of Palmi, Roberto Crea was a genius kid. He moved to the Netherlands and majored in Biological Chemistry. It was this university that directed his interest in the synthesis(合成) of nucleotides, the basic units that are required to build DNA. At that time, not many researchers studied the combination of genes, but Roberto’s strong chemistry background made a historical invention possible.
In 1977, he joined the Genentech, Inc. and the gene synthesis team at City of Hope Medical School. The company funded Dr. Crea’s ongoing research on gene synthesis. After working day and night, the brilliant individual finally invented a new procedure that improved the chemical synthesis of genes. Thanks to his rich knowledge and the joint efforts of the excellent Genentech team, he made use of this discovery to produce the human insulin(胰岛素) genes, A and B. It was his invention that allowed Genentech to be labeled as the first producer of human protein. This benefited hundreds of millions of people suffering from diabetes(糖尿病) all over the world.
Today Roberto is known as the father of synthetic insulin and almost won the Nobel Prize. His efforts did not stop after discovering the synthetic insulin; in fact, he was more than driven and tried to make more contributions to the field of biotechnology. His team of experts discovered Ziconotide under his teachings and guidance. According to leading scientists and researchers, this drug is more powerful and effective than morphine(吗啡), and the best part of this is that it has zero side-effects.
Dr. Roberto Crea has a long list of creditable discoveries and researches that he has achieved in 65 years of his life. He is an inspiration for many individuals who aim to add value to humanity with the help of science.

In a street which is largely unchanged since it was built in the 1800s, Hobart’s Battery Point is probably the last place you would expect to find a farm.
In one comer of Peter Handy’s backyard is a controlled environment unit that houses vertical pastures(垂直牧场), the first of its kind in the southern hemisphere(半球), Mr, Handy is changing the definition of what it means to be a farmer. “I know it’s really funny, because when people say to me, ‘Where’s your farm?’, I’ll say ‘it’s in Battery Point’ and they’re like, ‘No. there’s no farms in Battery Point’,” he said. “People think the Martians have landed because we’ve got this massive, big pink light that comes out of it from the bottom, but other than that, they’d have no idea.”
Not just a backyard project, Mr. Handy is running a business. “It’s here because I need to be as close to my customers, the chefs and restaurants of Hobart,” he said. “I aim to use the least amount of food miles as possible and make this a super-efficient business.”
Using LED lights and hydroponic nutrients, the farm grows leafy greens, root vegetables and flowering plants. “I don’t have to worry about floods, wind, wild animals, electric fences, turning the soil over,” Mr. Handy said. Using 95 percent less water than traditional farming, the farm ticks the box environmentally. “I mean, this is definitely not the answer to food sustainability in the world. But it’s definitely a part of it.”
Science writer Julian Cribb believes a world food crisis is coming, due to a combination of loss of water, loss of topsoil, climate change and overuse of poisons. “We’re going to need to change the nature of the way we produce food and change the human diet at the same time,” he said, “and new urban farming methods would see most of the world’s great cities feeding themselves.”
Mr. Cribb said Australia was still quite a way off from adopting urban farming. But he believes that poses a rather unique opportunity for Australian farmers to sell their expertise to cities, teaching people to grow food in urban environments.

Hundreds of native North American plants, often dismissed as weeds, deserve a lot more respect, according to a new study. These plants, distant cousins of foods like sunflowers and lettuce(莴苣), actually represent a botanical treasure now facing increased threats from climate change and habitat loss. The crops that the human race now depends on, including grains like wheat and tree fruit like peaches, originally were selected or bred(培育) from plants that grew wild hundreds or thousands of years ago. In the U. S., there are wild ancestors of blueberries, sweet potatoes, onions, potatoes, and many other food crops. “Some of them are quite common,” says Colin Khoury, a research scientist at the International Center for Tropical Agriculture. “Wild lettuce plants grow along sidewalks, or in backyards, but go unrecognized.”
Other crop relatives are rare and threatened. One of Khoury’s favorites is the paradoxical sun flower. “It grows just in wetlands of the deserts of New Mexico and Texas, little salty areas where there’s a little bit of water beneath the soil,” he says. So plant growers crossbred it with commercial sunflowers and created new varieties that can grow in places where the soil contains more salt. Other wild relatives may be hiding similarly remarkable gifts, Khoury says, such as genes that could help their domesticated relatives survive diseases, or deal with pests.
Khoury and some of his colleagues just finished a survey of about 600 wild crop relatives that grow in North America, and they found that most of these plants are threatened by things like fires, farming and development. The scientists argue that they deserve more protection. For one thing, “gene banks” should collect and preserve them. In addition, these plants need more protection in their natural habitat.
According to Khoury, that doesn’t necessarily mean setting aside land for them. In many cases, the plants already are growing on public land that’s managed by the U. S. Forest Service (USFS) or the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). “It s more about just being aware that these plants actually exist,” he says.

In a street which is largely unchanged since it was built in the 1800s, Hobart’s Battery Point is probably the last place you would expect to find a farm.
In one comer of Peter Handy’s backyard is a controlled environment unit that houses vertical pastures(垂直牧场), the first of its kind in the southern hemisphere(半球), Mr, Handy is changing the definition of what it means to be a farmer. “I know it’s really funny, because when people say to me, ‘Where’s your farm?’, I’ll say ‘it’s in Battery Point’ and they’re like, ‘No. there’s no farms in Battery Point’,” he said. “People think the Martians have landed because we’ve got this massive, big pink light that comes out of it from the bottom, but other than that, they’d have no idea.”
Not just a backyard project, Mr. Handy is running a business. “It’s here because I need to be as close to my customers, the chefs and restaurants of Hobart,” he said. “I aim to use the least amount of food miles as possible and make this a super-efficient business.”
Using LED lights and hydroponic nutrients, the farm grows leafy greens, root vegetables and flowering plants. “I don’t have to worry about floods, wind, wild animals, electric fences, turning the soil over,” Mr. Handy said. Using 95 percent less water than traditional farming, the farm ticks the box environmentally. “I mean, this is definitely not the answer to food sustainability in the world. But it’s definitely a part of it.”
Science writer Julian Cribb believes a world food crisis is coming, due to a combination of loss of water, loss of topsoil, climate change and overuse of poisons. “We’re going to need to change the nature of the way we produce food and change the human diet at the same time,” he said, “and new urban farming methods would see most of the world’s great cities feeding themselves.”
Mr. Cribb said Australia was still quite a way off from adopting urban farming. But he believes that poses a rather unique opportunity for Australian farmers to sell their expertise to cities, teaching people to grow food in urban environments.

Hundreds of native North American plants, often dismissed as weeds, deserve a lot more respect, according to a new study. These plants, distant cousins of foods like sunflowers and lettuce(莴苣), actually represent a botanical treasure now facing increased threats from climate change and habitat loss. The crops that the human race now depends on, including grains like wheat and tree fruit like peaches, originally were selected or bred(培育) from plants that grew wild hundreds or thousands of years ago. In the U. S., there are wild ancestors of blueberries, sweet potatoes, onions, potatoes, and many other food crops. “Some of them are quite common,” says Colin Khoury, a research scientist at the International Center for Tropical Agriculture. “Wild lettuce plants grow along sidewalks, or in backyards, but go unrecognized.”
Other crop relatives are rare and threatened. One of Khoury’s favorites is the paradoxical sun flower. “It grows just in wetlands of the deserts of New Mexico and Texas, little salty areas where there’s a little bit of water beneath the soil,” he says. So plant growers crossbred it with commercial sunflowers and created new varieties that can grow in places where the soil contains more salt. Other wild relatives may be hiding similarly remarkable gifts, Khoury says, such as genes that could help their domesticated relatives survive diseases, or deal with pests.
Khoury and some of his colleagues just finished a survey of about 600 wild crop relatives that grow in North America, and they found that most of these plants are threatened by things like fires, farming and development. The scientists argue that they deserve more protection. For one thing, “gene banks” should collect and preserve them. In addition, these plants need more protection in their natural habitat.
According to Khoury, that doesn’t necessarily mean setting aside land for them. In many cases, the plants already are growing on public land that’s managed by the U. S. Forest Service (USFS) or the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). “It s more about just being aware that these plants actually exist,” he says.
