Turandt in Beijing
By Jane Jnes
Last night, I witnessed the first perfrmance f Giacm Puccini's wrld-famus pera, Turandt, being perfrmed in the Frbidden City in Beijing, China. The perfrmance was splendid. Sme f the wrld's greatest pera singers and many great Chinese musicians als participated.
Just imagine perfrming such an pera in the Frbidden City—there culd nt be a mre awesme
setting! Yu culd almst feel the histry. The weather was als perfect fr a perfrmance utdrs. Instead f a stage curtain, there were decrated screens cvered with red and gld, and traditinal Chinese drums were used t annunce the start f the pera.
Turandt is the stry f a cruel Chinese princess named Turandt living in the Frbidden City in
Beijing. In rder t avid marriage, she says that any ptential husband must slve three riddles. Thse wh cannt answer all three riddles will be sentenced t death. A prince Calaf falls in lve with Turandt at first sight and managed t slve the riddles. Meanwhile, Liu, a yung slave f Calaf's father, expresses her lve fr Calaf. The stry then takes n a classic lve triangle between Calaf, Turandt and Liu. Turandt is unwilling t get married. Seeing this, Calaf says that if she can guess his name by sunrise,
she will nt have t marry him, but can have him killed. S Turandt seizes Calaf's father and Liu, and
demands that they tell her Calaf's name. Wanting t prtect the father, Liu claims that she alne knws the name and kills herself. At the end f the stry, the prince and princess unite in marriage.
Unfrtunately, Puccini died f a heart attack befre he cmpleted this final scene, and it had t be
cmpleted by ne f his frmer students, Franc Alfan. The cmbinatin f the talents frm many cuntries, the music, and the grand setting are clearly the key cmpnents f this amazing prductin.

They all take place in the pen air under the stars, taking advantage f the quarry's unusual acustics(音响效果). Speaking f The Sund f Music, it was riginally a Bradway musical and was made int a film in
1965. Mst f the scenes were filmed in r near Salzburg, Austria. The stry is based n the real-life stry f the Vn Trapp family, wh fled frm the cuntry when the Nazis invaded Austria. Over 50 years after its release, the film is still very ppular, and visitrs t Salzburg can take special turs that include mst f the film's famus landmarks.
Austria has a lng and rich musical histry, frm flk sngs and dances t classical symphnies and

A persn whse jb is t assist the ryal family in drawing musicians t Vienna.
Why is the St Margarethen Opera Festival held utdrs?
T take advantage f the surrundings.
T serve as a stage fr all kinds f music.
T make the mst f the quarry’s unusual acustics.
T attract mre regular Austrians t attend perfrmances.
