Gerty Cori, the first American woman to win the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine, was born in Prague in 1896. Gerty decided at the age of sixteen to study medicine. She entered the Realgymnasium at Tetschen, from which she graduated in 1914, and then went to the Medical School of the German University of Prague. While in medical school, Gerty met Carl Cori, a classmate who shared both her love of skiing and mountain climbing and her interest in laboratory research. In 1920, the two published the results of their first joint research, received their medical degrees, and married each other.

Elephants are truly incredible animals. August 12 is World Elephant Day, which means to help save elephants. What do you know about elephants? Here are some facts you may not know.
We know that elephants are large. But do you know that elephants often avoid eating a type of acacia tree (金合欢树)? Because it is home to ants and an elephant doesn’t want to get the ants inside its trunk. Its trunk is full of sensitive endings.
Female elephants live in groups of about 15 elephants. The oldest in the group is the leader. She not only decides when and where they move but also determines when they rest all the year. Male elephants leave the female group between the age of 12 and 15. But they aren’t loners. They live in all-male groups.
Asian elephants don’t run. Running requires lifting all four feet at once. But elephants filmed in Thailand always keep at least two on the ground at all times.
Elephants have passed the mirror test. They recognize themselves in a mirror. According to tests, great apes, and dolphins also have this ability.
Elephants can get sunburned so they can take care to protect themselves. “Elephants will throw sand on their backs and on their heads to keep them from getting sunburned and to keep off bugs off.” said Tony Barthel, working at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo. How do elephants protect their young? Adult elephants will put them in sand and then they will stand over the little ones as they sleep.
Some farmers in Kenya protect their fields from elephants by lining the borders with beehives (蜂箱). Not only are their crops saved, but the farmers also get some more money from the honey.
28.For what purpose is World Elephant Day designed?
    A. To show some facts about elephants.
    B. To introduce Asian elephants’ features.
    C. To call on people to protect elephants.
    D. To tell people some animals are in danger.
29.Why are elephants unwilling to eat acacia trees?
    A. Because acacia trees are too tall to reach
    B. Because fruit on acacia trees is hard to eat.
    C. Because elephants are sensitive to acacia trees.
    D. Because elephants’ trunks are easily hurt by ants in the trees.
30.What do we infer about male elephants?
    A. They can run faster than female ones.
    B. They live with female elephants at an early age.
    C. They decide where and when their groups move.
    D. The strongest male elephant is chosen as their leader.
31.How do elephants protect their young kids?
    A. By guarding kids when kids sleep.
    B. By putting some sand on kids’ heads.
    C. By using their trunks to keep bugs off.
    D. By patting kids’ backs from time to time.

A selection of wildlife sculptures made out of recycled rubbish is being displayed at an exhibition at the Harley Gallery in Glasgow, England. The sculptures have been created by Glasgow--based artist Michelle Reader, who has been working with recycled materials for over 20 years. The inspiration behind this collection of artwork was the increase in fly-tipping during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021. Fly-tipping is when people illegally dump rubbish or litter in a public place.
Reader told the BBC, “Glasgow Wildlife Trust showed me some of the materials that were found on their reserves—a washing machine, rusty bike frame, car tyres” She decided to create wildlife sculptures out of these materials to encourage people to think about the damage fly-tipping can do to the environment and wildlife. Her three-dimensional artworks included recycled items such as skis, a gas mask, and washing machine parts.
Reader often drew inspiration from the “beauty of the natural world,” and said that the large model of the white-tailed bee was inspired by the many hours she spent on her distribution during the pandemic. Another sculpture, a bearded eagle, was inspired by the sighting of one such bird in the Peak District in July 2020. This was only the second time it had been spotted in the UK.
Other projects Reader has been involved with have highlighted issues such as the importance of recycling and reducing food waste. In April, the National Space Centre in Leicester, England, launched their Home Planet gallery, which featured an art installation from Reader. Using rubbish found in rivers, such as plastic bottles, tennis balls, footwear, and toys, Reader created a large wave sculpture to highlight the problem of littering.
Reader says that through her sculptures she draws attention to environmental issues in an attractive and humorous way. The exhibition is on at Harley Gallery in Glasgow, England, until 24 July.

    A. Recycled materials. B. The Covid-19 pandemic.

    A. To be environmentally-friendly. B. To protect wildlife animals.
    C. To love the sculpture art. D. To improve creative ability.
34.Where does this passage probably come from?
    A. A family survey. B. A health magazine.
    C. An environmental magazine. D. A science guide.
35.What may be the best title for the passage?
    A. Look at the art from another angle.

    Live Long and Prosper
You can’t avoid getting old. But the decisions you make now about how you spend your day will have a great impact on the quality of your life.
We collected the latest research and talked to health, financial, and wellness experts to uncover the most important things you can do to keep the spring in your step and a healthy balance in your bank account through the years. 36
    Be grateful
Write down three things you’re grateful for each day. 37 Studies show that people who are grateful report better sleep, stronger relationships, fewer aches and pains, and lower blood pressure. Shawn Achor and Michelle Gielan, happiness researchers who are married to each other, share positive things about their days with one another. “It's a simple two-minute habit that allows us to learn about high moments and feel more connected,” Gielan says.
    38
Going outside, especially into a green space, is an easy way to improve your well-being and mental state, says Lori Gottlieb, a psychotherapist and the author of Maybe You Should Talk to Someone. “I actually make it a point to go outside every day,” she says. “I'll walk around the block, breathe, and look at the sky. It’s like pushing the reset button.” 39 Researchers from University of Alabama found that spending just 20 minutes in a park led to a 64 percent increase in life satisfaction even if you just sit on a bench.
    Get moving
Yes, you’ve heard it before, but decades of research show that exercise improves your health, lifts your mood, and lengthens your life. In fact, Harvard researchers found that as little as 15 minutes of moderate physical activity a day can increase your life span by three years. 40 Ball State University researchers found that people in their 70s who were lifelong exercisers were indistinguishable in many ways from healthy people 30 years younger.
Simple as these tips are, they have proven to be very useful if carried out on a regular basis. To live long and prosper, you always have a choice.
    A. This simple practice helps rewire your brain for greater happiness.
    B. Do some indoor activities.
    C. Read on for some great advice.
    D. Exercise also appears to keep your body young.
    E. Be grateful to those who have been there for you through thick and thin.

    Sample:

Should mobile phones be allowed at school?
Nowadays mobile phones are becoming more and more popular among middle school students. However, people have different opinions about whether mobile phones should be allowed at school or not.
Every coin has two sides and so does mobile phone. It has both advantages and disadvantages. Some students hold the opinion that they should take their mobile phones to school, which bring them conveniences. First, they can learn about the world and the latest information in time. Second, it's convenient for them to communicate with their parents and friends. Moreover, they can surf the Internet at any time anywhere to get the message they want to know. However, others are against using phones at school, as they think students get addicted to phones easily, especially playing on-line games. Spending too much time on phones has bad effects on their study, which may also influence their sleep and does harm to their eyesight.
As far as I am concerned, middle school students have a weak self-control, mobile phone does more harm than good, so it shouldn't be allowed at school.
