    英语

    第一部分 阅读(共两节,满分 50 分)

    第一节(共 15 小题;每小题 2.5 分,满分 37.5 分)

    阅读下列短文,从每题所给的 ABCD 四个选项中选出最佳选项。

    A

The human brain remembers negative experiences more easily than positive ones. Our brains have developed in this way because threats, like dangerous animals, have a more immediate effect on people’s survival compared to positive things like food or shelter. As a result, you clearly know what makes you unhappy, but do you know what makes you happy?

Research suggests that our level of happiness is partly shaped by the choices we make. If you’ve been chasing wealth, fame, power and some material things, you may be looking for happiness in the wrong places. Psychologists suggest that the following habits can make people happier.

People who own close relationships tend to be happier than those who do not. The number of our friends is not important. What matters is the quality of our relationships. Relationships that bring happiness usually consist of the sharing of feelings, acceptance, mutual (双方的) respect and trust.

People who exercise regularly can improve both their physical and mental well-being. Some research has shown that exercise can be as effective as some medicine in treating depression.

If we are so interested in an activity, we may lose track of time, and we can be in a state of flow. The activity could be playing the piano, surfing the Internet or playing a game… People who experience flow in their work or life tend to be happier.

People are more likely to be happy if they know what their strengths are and can use them regularly. People are especially happy when they can set goals and use their strengths to achieve them.

People, who think positively by being grateful, mindful and optimistic, are more likely to be happy. Being grateful means being thankful. Being mindful means considering, focusing on, and enjoying the experiences of the present moment. Being optimistic means being hopeful about the future.

1Why do Human brains remember negative things more easily?

ABecause negative things tend to affect human survival immediately

BBecause negative things are easy to remember

CBecause negative things are much more important than other things

DBecause negative things can make people live much happier

2According to this passage, in which of the following can people not find happiness?

Amaking friends Bdoing sports Cplaying the violin Dchasing power

3In the last paragraph, what does author try to tell us?

AWe should think more about our future.

BWe should be positive in our life and work.

CWe should focus on everything in our life.

DWe should only enjoy the present moment.

4What does the passage mainly want to tell us?

AWhy people remember positive things easily.

BWhy people remember negative things easily.

CSome habits that make people happy.

DThe habits the people form in their life.

    B

The Sabi Sands Game Reserve in South Africa is one of the richest wildlife regions in the African continent. Over 200 species of mammals and 350 different birds can be found in its vast plains, grasslands and forests.

I spoke to Michael Rattray, chairman of the Sabi Sands management committee, about the management policies. “If in a thousands years’ time the reserve is still a wonderful habitat for wildlife, then we will have succeeded in our mission. Various measures are being put in place. These include dealing with the problem of erosion. In 1996 we had abnormally high rainfall. This could have been absolutely destructive. However, we have successfully fought erosion using gabion stretchers, which are wire baskets filled with rocks. We have also used a lot of old aerial photographs, which have helped us return the land to its earlier state. This meant recreating open grassland areas to attract different types of animals,” he said.

Apart from these measures, the reserve employs a wide range of local workers. Building staff accommodation of any sort would make a big impact on the environment and would, go against the aim of keeping the reserve as natural as possible. Instead, transport is provided so employees can live a normal life with their families outside the area, and the human impact is kept to a minimum (最低限度).

Visitors to the reserve spend about six hours a day in open vehicles, observing wildlife on game drives. They are accompanied by a ranger and a local tracker. I shall never forget the moment on a game drive when a cheetah (猎豹) with her five cubs was pointed out to me. She was lying in a sea of long yellow grass, her markings almost invisible. We got close enough to hear her purr.

The Sabi Sands Game Reserve is a place where animals have no fear of humans. It is impossible to quantify the benefits of spending time in such an environment.

8What helped solve the problem of erosion?

    AThe low rainfall. BGabion stretchers.

    CEmpty baskets. DAerial photographs.

9What can we know about visitors to the reserve?

AThey can walk to the open fields.

BThey must have very good eyesight.

CThey cannot go around the reserve alone.

DThey have two ways to reach the reserve.

10How did the author feel when he visited the reserve?

    ADisappointed. BAmazed.

    CFrightened. DMoved.

11What would be the best title for the text?

AAn introduction to the Sabi Sands Game Reserve

    BThe importance of protecting wildlife

CSome advice on visiting the Sabi Sands Game Reserve

DThe Sabi Sands Game Reserve — the biggest wildlife region

    D

As aging population gets bigger and dementia (老年痴呆症) more common, more families are struggling with a complex question: How do you support a loved one with dementia, especially when you have a full-time job and several kids?

Reg Urbanowski may have an answer to this pressing issue: ROBOTS. He and his team managed to develop a new type of robots named TP robots. Looking like stand-up vacuum cleaners attached to an iPad, they can be activated remotely via a smartphone and guided remotely by a controller app similar to the way a mouse is used on a desktop computer. All possess audio and visual communication capabilities, allowing the operator to be “in the room” to interact with Mom or Dad.

He believes that caregivers and family members can use a TP robot to “look in” on people with mild dementia. He says, “TP robots provide an effective solution for minimizing caregiver burden, especially for those who have career or other out-of home activities.”

Urbanowski and his team have conducted a study that involves providing TP robots for 15 Manitoba families. These robots are programmed to provide reminders of necessary daily routine like turning off the gas, taking medicine and having dinner. They will also help ensure patients are getting the exercise they need to maintain their health and well-being.

Erin Crawford, Program Director with the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, says she has faith that TP robots will prove beneficial, particularly when it comes to reminding people with dementia to do certain things at certain times. “It means that family members that can’t be there, for whatever reason, know that those things are till happening,” she says.

12What inspired Reg Urbanowskit and his team to develop such robots?

    ASolving a puzzle in society.

BMaking caring for the elderly easier.

    CHelping aging people with dementia.

DEncouraging people they love and care.

13Which is a function of TP robots?

AThey arrange dinners for users. BThey turn on the light for users.

CThey play games with users. DThey remind users to take exercise.

14What’s Erin Crawford’s attitude to the future of TP robots?

    AObjective. BCritical.

    COptimistic. DCautious.

15What does the passage mainly cover?

AThe new characteristics of TP robots.

BA new type of robot for dementia patients.

CA practical way to relieve pain from dementia.

DThe application of TP robots in medical community.

    A Change of Heart

It was a cold December and things were tough for my family. Mum had a hard time raising us kids on her own in our small community of New Westminster as dad passed away five years earlier. We relied on social assistance.

Looking back, I realize what Mum went through sending us kids to school. Every morning she would place a new piece of cardboard in our shoes because our soles (鞋底) were worn out. When we got home, Mum would have French toast ready for us. Constant moving was typical for my family in those days, and it didn’t look like we’d be in our current house much longer. Rent was $25 a month, but Mum couldn’t pay it, and we knew we would be forced to leave right after Christmas on the first of January.

The holidays were fast approaching, and we were entitled to $25 for Christmas from social services. Mum said that instead of buying food, she was going to use the money to pay our rent. That way we’d have a roof over our heads for a little while longer. Then she told us that there would be no Christmas gifts.

Unknown to Mum, I had been selling Christmas trees, shoveling () snow and doing odd jobs to earn enough money to buy a new pair of boots. I knew exactly which boots I wanted. They were ten-inch, Top-Genuine, Pierre Paris boots, and they cost $23.

The big day for getting my boots came on Christmas Eve afternoon. I was very excited as I hurried up the road to catch the bus into town. It was only a half-mile walk, but on the way I noticed a house with Christmas lights and decorations. It was then I realized that at our house, we had no lights, no decorations and no turkey or ham for Christmas dinner.

    注意:1. 续写词数应为150词左右;2. 续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好。

As I continued walking, I began to feel a strange sense of guilt.

    46Dear Tom,

Our school has organized students to read after class since this term. Knowing that you are very interested in this activity, I’m writing to tell you about the details of it.

In this activity, students are supposed to read literary classics. Then our teacher will organize a meeting, in which we need to retell the story and exchange our inspiration and impressions after reading. Not only does it increase our knowledge, but also makes us enjoy reading. If you have any good ideas about this activity, you can share with me.

I’m looking forward to hearing from you soon.

    Yours,

    Li Hua

    47One possible version:

    Para. 1:

As I continued walking, I began to feel a strange sense of guilt. Here I was going to buy a new pair of boots, while Mum was probably home in tears, thinking of ways to explain why there were no presents. How was I supposed to be happy if everyone else in the family was not? Thinking of this, the idea of buying the beautiful boots I had wanted for so long didn’t seem as fascinating as before. As I arrived at the bus stop, the driver opened the door, waiting for me to get on. I stood there for what seemed like a century, until eventually the driver asked, “Son, are you getting on this bus or not?” I finally burst out without hesitation, “No thanks, sir. I’ve changed my mind.”

    Para. 2:

The bus drove off without me, and I breathed a sigh of relief. Feeling as if a weight had been lifted off my shoulders, I knew what I had to do next. Across the street from the bus stop was a big grocery store. Into the store I went, brimming with happiness and excitement. I bought a turkey, ham, oranges and all the Christmas decorations. I spent every coin of my hard-earned money. Once I arrived home with all those purchases, I knocked on the door. I could hardly wait to see my mother’s face! When Mum opened the door, some of the groceries fell inside onto the floor, and she just stood there, too stunned to speak. Holding back the tears, I exclaimed, “Merry Christmas, Mother! There really is a Santa Claus!” To see my mother’s prayers answered more than made up for the boots I never got. It was a Merry Christmas for us after all!
