    A

Our story begins not in the icy cold waters of the North Atlantic, but rather thousands of miles away in Egypt. It is here, perhaps, that we can find the start of the mystery () of the Titanic, in the year 1910, in the great city of Cairo.

One day, a famous professor of Egyptian history called Douglas Murray was staying in Cairo, when he was contacted by an American adventurer.

The American had something unusual to offer Murray, something that was certain to thrill him: a beautiful ancient Egyptian mummy case, containing the mummy of an Egyptian queen. It was over 3,000 years old, but in beautiful condition—gold, with bright paintings on it. Murray was delighted with both the object and the askingprice. He gave the man a cheque immediately.

The cheque was never cashed. That evening the American adventurer died. For his part, Murray arranged to have the treasure sent back to Britain. However, it was not long before he learnt more about the beautiful mummy case: On the walls of the tomb in which it had been discovered, there were messages which warned of terrible consequences to anyone who broke into the tomb. Murray was disbelieving of these warnings until a few days later, when a gun he was holding exploded in his hand, shattering his arm. The arm had to be cut off.

After the accident, Murray decided to return to his homeland. On the return journey, two of his companions died mysteriously, and two servants who had handled the mummy also passed away. The nowterrified Murray decided he would get rid of the cursed case as soon as he arrived in London. A lady he knew named Janet Jones said she would like it, so he gave it to her. Shortly afterwards, Jones' mother died, and she herself caught a strange disease. She tried returning the mummy, but naturally Murray refused it. In the end, it was presented to the British Museum.

Even in the museum, the mummy apparently continued to cause strange events. A museum photographer died shortly after taking pictures of the new exhibit; and a manager also died for no apparent reason. In the end, the British Museum decided to get rid of the mummy too. They sold it to a collector in New York.

At the start of April 1912, arrangements for the transfer were complete, and the mummy began the journey to its new home. But the New Yorker never received the mummy or its case. For when the Titanic sank, one of the objects in its strongroom was the mummy case. Or so they say.

Hydroponics (水培) is the only way that in the future we will be able to grow crops and food and at the same time sustain (维持) the earth. It is a method of growing plants using mineral nutrient solutions, without soil.

These days we are losing land at such a rapid rate that it is only a matter of time before we will run out of land to develop. If we continue to grow at such a rateeventually the only land left to be developed will be farmland. If we use farmland to put up more apartmentsthen we will have no land to grow crops to survive. This is becoming a serious possibility. This is why scientists have developed another way to grow food and plants without using land.

The great thing about hydroponics growing is that anyone can do it. If you have the knowledge and the right equipment, you can do it yourself at your home. This means that individuals that live in downtown areas, and have no yard space for a garden can grow vegetables and fruits and herbs (药草) which will free them from going to the grocery store every day. The equipment to grow plants using a hydroponics system is easy to obtain (得到) and can be easily picked up at a local store or over the Internet. They are reasonably priced and easy to use. All you have to do is to follow the instructions. You will soon be on your way to free groceries.

With a hydroponics system, your plants will all grow faster. This is especially good if you grow and sell them. You can expect a higher yield (产量) and they grow quickly. You can save a lot of money by using them for cooking all year round. You can also expect to have a fresh supply of high quality vegetables and green leaves on a regular basis.

    5Hydroponics will not need________.

    Asoil

    Bmineral nutrient

    Cequipment

    Dseeds of vegetables or plants

6Which of the following statements is TRUE about the future hydroponics system according to the passage?

AOnly people living in the countryside can make use of this system.

BYou will spend a lot of money and time in using this kind of system.

CThe equipment of this system can be bought from an online shop or your local shop.

DPeople will not get enough food by using it, so they will still need land to grow crops.

7If you use a hydroponics system at your house________.

Athe plants will grow much slower than on farmland

Byou can only harvest enough plants for your kitchen use

Cyou will need some other people to help you maintain it

Dyou will no longer have to go to the grocery store every day

8What would be the best title for this passage?

    AOur planet is crying

BHydroponics is the future of farming

CThe invention of the hydroponics system

DThe introduction to a hydroponics system

    C

Have you ever imagined what kind of car we will be driving in 2020? It will be rather different from the type we know today, with the next 20 years bringing greater change than the past 50 years. The people who will be designing the models of tomorrow believe that environmental problems may well accelerate (促进,加快) the pace of the car's development. Today they are students on the transport design course at London's Royal College of Art.

Their vision is of a machine with three wheels instead of four, electrically powered, environmentally cleanand able to drive itself along “intelligent” roads equipped with builtin power supplies. Future cars will pick up their fuel during long journeys from a power source built into the road, or store it in small quantities for traveling in the city.

Instead of today's seating arrangements—two in front, two or three behind, all facing forward—the 2020 car will have a versatile (多功能的) interior (内部) with adults and children in a family circle.

This view of the future car is based on a much more sophisticated (复杂的) road system, with strips (条纹)built into motorways to supply power to vehicles passing along them. Cars will not need driversbecause computers will provide safe driving control and route finding. All the driver will have to do is to say where to go and the computer will do the rest. It will become impossible for cars to crash into one another. The technology already exists for the car to become a true automobile.

9A future car will use electrical power, because it is________.

    Asafer    Bcheaper

    Ccleaner    Dfaster

10A future car will have all the following features EXCEPT that it ________.

    Ahas three wheels

    Bruns without anyone in it

    Cdrives along special roads

    Dhas a versatile seating arrangement

11What is the main idea of the text?

AFuture cars will be different from the automobiles we know today in many ways.

BThe design of future cars will be more sophisticated.

CBecause of the new type of cars, our future environment will become cleaner.

DThe road system will become more sophisticated than it is today.

12Why don't the cars need drivers?

ABecause computers will have control over them.

BBecause there will be no drivers.

CBecause the cars are hard for the drivers to drive.

DBecause the road can tell the cars where to go.

    D

    Summer Rain

The worst days of any summer are the rainy ones. We spend all year looking forward to nice weather and long, hot days. All of winter, with its cloudy days and bitter cold, we dream of those endless days at the beach, lying on the sand and enjoying the bright and burning sun. And then, summer comes, and it rains.

As a child, I would wake up to rainy summer days and come close to crying.  It wasn't fair.  We suffered through months of school and experienced bad weather for those short ten weeks of freedom and pleasant weather.

On those rainy summer days, I had nothing fun to do and could only sit inside, staring out at the rain like a bird in a cage. I was an only child, so there was no one else to play with. My father worked from home, so I was not truly alone, but he could not actively play with me since he was at work. It was those days that I would watch whatever was on television or read any books that I could find lying around. I'd drag through the day and pray each night that the rain would not be there the next day.

As an adult, though, my opinion of summer rain has changed. When you have to work every day, summer is not as exciting. Everything seems dull. Such a mindset makes you cheer for anything new or different. I spend the winter dreaming of summer and the summer dreaming of winter. When summer comes, I hate how hot it is. And then I look forward to the rain, because the rain brings with it a cold front, which makes me comfortable. Rainy days are still the worst days of the summer, but summer rain today means positively beautiful—and considerably cooler  weather tomorrow.

13When the author was a child, he ________.

    Ahated rainy days

    Bliked staying indoors

    Cpreferred colder weather

    Ddreamed on summer days

14We can learn from the passage that the author ________.

    Ahad no brothers or sisters

Bwas often left alone at home

Ccould enjoy the brilliant sun in winter

    Dpreferred reading to playing outside

15As an adult, the author views summer rain differently because ________.

Ahe knows it won't last long

    Brain makes the weather cooler

Chis summer holiday is very short

Dhe can better deal with his downtime
