Actors Keira Knightley and Kristen Bell have both commented on their worries about using Disney princesses as role models for their children.

On a famous talk show, Knightley said her daughter (who was born in 2015) was “banned” from watching Cinderella, which Disney produced as a cartoon in 1950 and a live-action film in 2015. “Cinderella waits around for a rich guy to rescue her. Don’t. Rescue yourself! Obviously.”

Knightley added that she had also forbidden The Little Mermaid, the 1989 cartoon. “This is the one that I’m quite annoyed about because I really like the film. I mean, the songs are great, but do not give up your voice for a man. Well, that’s a little difficult to handle, but I’m keeping to it.”

Bell, the star of Frozen, expressed her disapproval of the Snow White fairytale, which became a classic Disney cartoon in 1938. In an interview with parents, Bell said: “I look at my girls and ask, ‘Don’t you think it’s very unusual that Snow White didn’t ask the old witch why she needed to eat the apple? Or where she got that apple?’ I say, ‘I would never take food from a stranger, would you?’ And my kids respond, ‘No!’ And I think I’m doing something right.”

Bell, who played a Disney princess in Frozen, said she also used the story to illustrate issues about permission. She says that she asked her children: “Don’t you think that it’s very strange that the prince kisses Snow White without her permission? … Because you cannot kiss someone if they’re sleeping!”

Bell later responded to criticism on social media. To one user she wrote: “Everything is a message to our children, because they are sponges(海绵) that soak up everything and are learning how to be adults through what they see. I want my girls to see and practice critical thinking and respectful behavior.”

    24. Why did Knightley stop her daughter from watching The Little Mermaid?

    A. Because Knightley disliked it.
    B. Because the little mermaid was tricky.
    C. Because the film showed wrong values.
    D. Because the songs in the film were annoying.

    25. What can we infer about Bell from Paragragh 4?

    A. Bell thought Snow White behaved well.
    B. Bell didn’t know how to persuade her kids.
    C. Bell wanted her kids to learn from Snow White.
    D. Bell believed her kids should be critical about the film.

    26. What qualities do Knightley and Bell expect their children to have?

    A. curious and hard-working.      B. smart and generous.
    C. critical and proud.             D. independent and good-mannered.

    27. What can be a suitable title for the text?

    A. Say No to Disney Princesses    B. Rescue Yourselves
    C. Doing Something Right        D. Practise Critical Thinking

    C

America is growing older. Fifty years ago, only 4 out of every 100 people in the United States were 65 or older. Today, 10 out of every 100 Americans are over 65. The aging of the population will affect American society in many ways—education, medicine, and business. Quietly, the graying of America has made us a very different society—one in which people have a quite different idea of what kind of behavior is suitable at various ages.

A person’s age no longer tells you anything about his/her social position, marriage or health. There’s no longer a particular year in which one goes to school or goes to work or gets married or starts a family. The social clock that kept us on time and told us when to go to school, get a job, or stop working isn’t as strong as it used to be. It doesn't surprise us to hear of a 29-year-old university president or a 35-year-old grandmother, or a 70-year-old man who has become a father for the first time. Public ideas are changing.

Many people say, ‘I am much younger than my mother—or my father—was at my age.’ No one says ‘Act your age’ anymore. We’ve stopped looking with surprise at older people who act in youthful ways.

    28. It can be learnt from the text that the aging of the population in America         .

    A. has made people feel younger

    B. has changed people’s social position

    C. has changed people’s understanding of age

    D. has slowed down the country’s social development

    29. The underlined word ‘one’ refers to         .

    A. a society       B. America        C. a place           D. population

    30. ‘Act your age’ means people should         .

    A. be active when they are old

    B. do the right thing at the right age

    C. show respect for their parents young or old

    D. take more physical exercise suitable to their age

    31. If a 25-year-old man becomes general manager of a big firm, the writer of the text would most probably consider it       .

    A. normal       B. wonderful      C. unbelievable    D. unreasonable

    D

Convincing(使……信服)someone to change their mind is really the process of convincing them to change their tribe (部落). If they abandon their beliefs, they run the risk of losing social ties. You can’t expect someone to change their mind if you take away their community too.

The way to change people’s minds is to become friends with them, to combine them into your tribe, to bring them into your circle. Now, they can change their beliefs without the risk of being abandoned socially.

The British philosopher Alain de Botton suggests that we simply share meals with those who disagree with us: “Sitting down at a table with a group of strangers has the incomparable and odd benefit of making it a little more difficult to hate them without punishment. Prejudice and conflict between groups of people from different nations or races feed off abstraction. However, during a meal, something about handing dishes around, unfolding napkins (餐巾纸) at the same moment, even asking a stranger to pass the salt makes us less likely to hold the belief that the outsiders who wear unusual clothes and speak in distinctive accents deserve to be sent home or attacked. For all the large-scale political solutions which have been proposed to ease racial or cultural conflict, there are few more effective ways to promote tolerance between suspicious neighbours than to force them to eat supper together.”

Perhaps it is not difference, but distance that produces tribalism and unfriendliness. As proximity increases, so does understanding. I am reminded of Abraham Lincoln’s quote, “I don’t like that man. I must get to know him better.” Facts don’t change our minds. Friendship does.

The Japanese writer Haruki Murakami once wrote, “Always remember that to argue, and win, is to break down the reality of the person you are arguing against. It is painful to lose your reality, so be kind, even if you are right.”

When we are in the moment, we can easily forget that the goal is to connect with the other side, cooperate with them, befriend them, and integrate them into our tribe. We are so caught up in winning that we forget about connecting. It’s easy to spend your energy labeling people rather than working with them.

The word “kind (family and relatives)” originated from the word “kin (old fashion of family and relatives).” When you are kind to someone, it means you are treating them like family. This, I think, is a good method for actually changing someone’s mind. Develop a friendship. Share a meal. Gift a book. Be kind first, be right later.

    32. People are likely to change their mind when they ________.

    A. change their beliefs                 B. are made friends with

    C. move to a new community         D. are given somewhere to go

    33. According to the passage, sharing meals is effective in building connections because it ________.

    A. pleases people with different beliefs or accents

    B. makes people focus on eating rather than conflicts

    C. brings benefits to the people having dinner together

    D. promotes understanding and tolerance among people

    34. What does the underlined word “proximity” in Paragraph 4 mean?

    A. Nearness.      B. Action.        C. Communication.      D. Politeness.

    35. The author quotes from Haruki Murakami to imply(暗示)that ________.

    A. breaking down one’s reality is easy

    B. kindness is more important than right

    C. arguing and winning are not important

    D. losing one’s identity is a painful process

    第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

    阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

The next time you pick up a glass, notice the place where your fingers touched it. Do you see patterns of these lines?    36     If you look closely at the tips of your fingers, you will see the same raised patterns on your skin.

Fingerprints(指纹) begin to form long before a baby is born.     37     Even if we injure our fingers, the lines of our fingerprints grow back the same way, as long as the injury isn’t very serious.

No two people have the same fingerprints-not even twins. Because fingerprints are unique, they can be used to identify people.    38     Fingerprints can also act like a key, unlocking a phone if a person’s fingerprint matches one that has been stored in the device.

        39

They might help us improve our sense of touch. Or they might help tell a doctor whether a patient is properly absorbing the medicine they’ve been given. Also they might help police to solve crimes (破案). If a thief stole gold watches from a store and left his fingerprints behind, the police can check those fingerprints. They compare them to their database to find who has a matching fingerprint.

Just imagine our life without fingerprints! It’d be difficult for us to read information and interact with whatever we’re touching or holding in our hands.    40     How do you feel when your fingers are interacting with the buttons of the computer while wearing gloves? Or did you find difficulties in unlocking your phone?

    A. Those are your fingerprints.

    B. Why do we need fingerprints?

    C. Why don’t people have the same fingerprints?

    D. Having no fingerprints is like wearing gloves!

    E. Well, a fingerprint is formed when a finger makes contact with a surface.

    F. Investigators look for fingerprints left to help figure out who had been there.

    G. When we enter the world, we have the fingerprints we’ll have for our whole lives.
