Every Sunday, Grandma and I walked to the Children’s home a few blocks away from our house. Grandma always brings a home-made cake to these children, who are of different nationalities and ages. Some are refugees (难民)who cannot talk in English, some are even disabled.
First we visit John, who is from Brazil. I call him “Football genius”. He plays football so well that he organized a football team to help other kids develop football skills, such as passing and ball control. Every time we reached the playground, we saw a group of sweaty kids running around a field with bright smiles.
Next we visit Daisy. I call her “The singer” because she has a great gift for singing. She loves to sing songs for us. Wherever she stays, her soft and sweet voice fills the air.
Then we visit David. I call him “Prince(王子)Joke”. He can do talk show, cross-talk(相声),tell jokes. Sometimes he laughs loudly while telling jokes, we could see his legs shaking up and down, his face turning red. Grandma and I can’t help laughing along with him.
One day, Grandma fell ill and had to stay in bed. She was in a low spirit and couldn’t move.
Sunday came. Grandma put my hand into her hand and told me “Rose given fragrance(芳香)in hand.” I understood what she meant, I bought a cake from shop and went to children’s home. Everyone was happy lo see me. They were disappointed when they didn’t see grandma. Knowing grandma was sick, they were sad. They prayed together for grandma’s recovery. After a while, I said goodbye to everyone.
A week later, grandma was still lying in bed. She could not walk or speak, what she could do was drink some milk. I begged her to go to hospital. She shook her head. I hid myself under the big tree in our yard so Grandma wouldn’t see tears on my cheeks.

Mary waited anxiously for her turn in the empty dressing room. Never had she been so nervous before. This competition was of vital importance to her comeback. “If I can win today,”she said to herself,“I can dance on the national stage next month.” Three months ago,her left arm was seriously injured in a car accident. After the medical treatment, she began to recover slowly. She practiced over and over again in order to regain her dancing skills.
“Hi,Mary,”in rushed her friend Jessica. “How is your arm? Is it going to influence your performance?”
“I guess it can be tolerated for I am to win the match.” said Mary with a determined look.
“Admirable! But I hear that a girl called Linda is really gifted and strong. She can be your real well-matched competitor. Come on!”
After Jessica left,Mary decided to practice her most difficult spin. “If I don’t try harder,I won’t grasp this chance.” She thought. But her arm began to hurt, making her worried. “Mary, what makes you think you have a chance tonight?” she said to herself. After the pain was gone, she continued to warm up.
A slim girl hurried in and put down an equipment bag on the chair. Then, she took out her dance dress quickly and put it on skillfully. Seeing Mary, she smiled politely and said “Hi,I’m Linda. I am the next one!” Mary nodded in reply but felt uncomfortable. “This is just my competitor. Because of her,I may lose tonight.” Her mind was wandering when Linda let out a scream,“Oh,God,I can’t find my music tape!” Linda searched her bag but in vain. “It may be missing on the way.” With these words, she then rushed out.

A Mother’s Heartfelt Note of Love
Everything seemed to have changed for me when I entered high school. I never saw a single person I knew from middle school. At home I was just as lonely. “My brothers and sister all fit in.” I thought, coming in the door after another bad day at school. “Why can’t I?”
Mom was there waiting for me. “Karole, your bedroom’s a disaster. Why can’t you keep it clean?” The last thing I needed was criticism from my mother. What had happened to the mother who used to snuggle (依偎) with me on the sofa, loving me with complete acceptance? Who thought everything I did was wonderful? I didn’t bother trying to explain my unhappiness. It was easier to hide in my bedroom, without saying a word, like I did every afternoon.
Clearing off some space, I sat down at my desk. Yet another thing I wasn’t good at anymore. My grades had slipped along with my confidence. I turned to a new page in my notebook and started working out the first problem. Almost immediately, I saw I’d made a mistake. “Wrong again!” I thought. “You can’t do anything right!” I tore the paper out of my notebook, balled it up in my fist and threw it at the wastepaper basket. The ball landed on the floor. I heard my mother’s voice in my head, “Why can’t you keep your room clean?”
By the time I finished my homework, the floor was littered with crumpled (弄皱的) paper. It gave me a kind of satisfaction to see the mess I’d made. Like it was proof of all my shortcomings. Every time I looked at those crumpled balls, I reminded myself what a failure I was. But my unhappiness stayed hidden away, just like those mistakes. With my face a mask of indifference, no one knew what I was really feeling. Who would want to listen?
One day, I came home to an empty house. It was a relief not to be met with Mom’s latest complaint. “Nothing I do is right in her eyes.” I thought. “Or anyone else’s, including mine.”

The Cup of Coffee
It was supposed to be a normal trip to the supermarket. My son was little, and it was getting close to time to have a little sleep, so I was rushing through the aisles trying to avoid a failure. I remember feeling a sense of achievement as I got him into the car without any tears. Then I went to start the car and realized my keys were gone. After a few minutes of checking around, I realized that I must have locked them in the trunk with my bag.
I wasn’t sure what to do, so I took my son out of his car seat and went back inside the store with my cart still full of groceries. I had to use their phones to call my husband for the spare key because my phone was in the bag I had locked in the trunk. After multiple calls and messages with no answer, I was getting discouraged. My son was tired and began to cry. I was tired because of a sleepless night that all mums go through-when their kids are teething. When he went into full-on crying, I felt the tears come down my face, too.
An employee at the store tapped me on the shoulder and asked me to come with her. I was panicked for a moment, thinking that I was going to be scolded and thrown into the storage area to keep us quiet. The employee, whose name I would later find out was Kelly, took me, to my surprise, to the Starbucks cafe that was inside the store. She asked me if I drank coffee. When I said yes, she walked over to the counter and came back with one for me. She said that it looked like I was having one of those days and that, as a mum, she had them, too. I told her how stupid I felt locking my keys in the car, and she assured me it happened to a lot of people. As we talked, my son settled into a sound sleep in my arms.

I need to do something in my community (社区) in order to complete the community service hours required to graduate from high school. Some of my friends had signed up to spend time at a soup kitchen, so I did, too. It seemed like a good thing to do.
I thought that we would just be passing our dinners to those in need, but I found out we would be doing everything from preparing to serving the dinner. We began preparing the food, from mixing salad dressing to separating frozen meat. Much still needed to be done before dinner was served, but already outside the building many homeless people were gathering. It wasn’t until a couple of hours later that we opened the doors and began serving dinner.
As the line of people came toward me, I got a little scared. I’d come face to face with the homeless: How should I act? How would they treat me? Would they hate me for having more than they did? While some of the people looked very friendly, some of them looked so dangerous, I didn’t have too much time to worry about it. I was assigned (分配) to serve the salad with the lady next to me. She smiled at me and said if I needed help, she’d be right there, which I found quite comforting.
I had never seen so many people wanting food. They were of all ages and nationalities. Most of them wore clothes that were torn and dirty. Some looked like they had totally given up on life, while others seemed to be making the best of the situation, smiling and joking. Some were better off than others, but they all needed a good meal and a warm place to eat. It saddened me to think of how many people there were who didn’t have a place to call home and the only food they got came from a soup kitchen.

6.阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Crash! The old black pickup truck in front of me stopped. I didn’t. I crashed into its back breaking the fender (挡泥板) and bending the driver’s door of my car. To make matters worse, it wasn’t my car. It was my father’s. I shouldn’t have been driving it, and now I had destroyed it.
A farmer jumped out of the truck, slowly and carefully, and looked at the damage. I sat sobbing (抽噎), my lip bleeding where I’d bitten it. He was in a hurry to leave, but we managed to exchange names and phone numbers before he pulled out onto the highway again. I followed, knowing I dared not go home. I’d be in big trouble.
It was my high school graduation day. I drove to school and climbed out through the passenger door. Surveying the broken fender and the door, tears flowed down my face, which was rapidly becoming swollen. I walked into the gym and joined my classmates to prepare for the graduation party. Bad news traveled fast, and soon a teacher came to me
“You’ll have to go home to get dressed for the graduation sooner or later,” she said. “Sooner would be much better and you have to tell your parents.”
I finally agreed and slowly drove home. The Death March sounded in my ears.
My mother took one look at my face when I got home and screamed, “What on earth happened?”
I hung my head and tears rolled down my face again. “I crashed Daddy’s car.”
She threw up her hands in panic and rushed to the backyard where Dad was making burgers. “Stop cooking, Ted. We’re not going to eat. Jean has destroyed your car.”
Dad looked at her and said quietly, “Is she hurt?”
“No, except for biting her lip.”
“Well, then, what does that have to do with eating dinner?” He put a burger on a plate with the others, then walked across the yard and put his arm around me. “Let’s go inside and hear all about this if you’re sure you’re all right.” I sobbed and nodded.

When school was over, the day was fading and it started to drizzle(毛毛雨). I stood at the school gate, with a loaded backpack on my shoulders. It was Friday again: a weekend of joy with unlimited sleeping hours and dinner courses specially made to my taste, a weekend at home. I waved goodbye to my friends as they jumped into their fathers’ warm and comfortable cars. Curiously, this gave rise to a disturbing feeling in me. It was not exactly what they called jealousy, but something like dismay(沮丧). I knew all I could expect was an old bike Mom would ride along on, with the badly-oiled chain creaking(嘎吱作响) against the wheel to announce her arrival.
Every Friday when Mom came to pick me up for the weekend, it was a moment full of great expectation and great unease. I always felt my face burning as we rode our way in and out of the numerous cars and saw my friends’ faces sticking out of the car windows. It was like stepping into a ballroom with beautifully dressed ladies and finding yourself in a smelly T-shirt.
To tell you the truth, Mom is quite a headache once in a while. She just looks a homely middle-aged housewife. Being a practitioner of DIY, she knits most of my sweaters, chiefly in old styles. Whenever caught by some curious classmates asking what brand my sweaters are, I’d force a smile and reply in a half joking manner: homemade.
I couldn’t remember when I started to find her such an embarrassment. As a little boy, I relied on her so much. She had been working at home, cooking in the kitchen, knitting by the lamp or riding across town to buy me a book I badly needed. It had always been much fun riding with mom. But just now there seemed to be something standing between us, something that made her so strange to me and me to her.

I moved to a new place. After the first day at my new school, I walked home alone. Mom told me she had to work. I was still hoping she’d meet me after the bell.
I opened the door. I was hungry. I wandered into the kitchen, tearing tape from the packed boxes while I searched for a clean plate. My fingers slipped, and something went crashing to the ground.
“Benjamin!” cried Mom from the doorway. I didn’t hear her come in. “What just broke?” she asked, bending to pick up the shards (碎片). In her hands, I recognized the pieces. It was Grandma’s bowl, the one Mom put out for special occasions.
“Why couldn’t you have waited for me to unpack? I couldn’t believe you broke this,” she said.
Words burst from my mouth and spilled across the room. “Well, I can’t believe we have to live here now! I can’t believe I have to switch schools when there are only a few weeks left before summer!” I ran into my room, shutting the door behind me violently.
The broom (扫帚) swept across the kitchen floor. Then the click of Mom’s bedroom door closed behind her. I stole out into the kitchen and picked out the shards in the dustbin. There were so many pieces in here, but maybe I could put them back together.
“I’ m sorry I yelled,” said Mom, as she opened her door. “Please just throw out the pieces. We can’t make a fresh start with broken things.”
As I wandered down the hall, Mr. Sato, my neighbor, was emptying his garbage.
“Are you sure you want to throw that out?” he asked, gesturing towards the bowl.
“It’s broken,” I whispered. “This is all my fault.”
“Things break, Benjamin. That isn’t anyone’s fault. Besides, this is a simple repair. Come. I’ll show you.” Taking a thin knife, Mr. Sato started to repair the bowl. After a long time, Mr. Sato said to me, “This needs to dry. Come back on Saturday, and we will finish it.”

I always wondered how people would react if I tried to approach a stranger for help in a busy place like a street corner or in a bustling mall. I personally have always hurried past a stranger who tried to catch my attention in a busy place or when I am rushing around.
Yesterday I had a taste of being stuck in such a desperate situation where you only hope of help would have to come from a total stranger.
I was in a busy shopping mall buying a large piece of luggage. After the purchase in one of the large, fancy, expensive shops, I picked up my phone from my pocket to call my driver waiting in the parking lot and my phone was dead.
I then requested the shop assistant who had just sold me the luggage, which was not cheap at all, if she could ring the number of my driver for me. She replied, still all smiles, “I’m sorry Sir, but it is the shop policy that we cannot use mobile phones while working in the shop.”
As I was wondering what kind of policy that was, I saw a nice-looking teenage boy coming toward me. Remember my wife’s interesting theory that beautiful people are more likely to give you a hand when you’re in trouble, I thought I might have a chance. But before I could say a word, he walked past me. It turned out he simply didn’t see me.
I waited a bit longer in the mall but it seemed nobody bothered to look at me. Disappointed and tired, I got out of the shop on to the busy street in front. I stood there with people rushing by, looking at their faces to see if there was a sign of kindness on their face. I began wondering how many times I had reacted to strangers like the shop girl and the teenager.

Price of a Miracle
Tess was an eight-year-old girl when she heard her mom and dad talking about her little brother, Andrew. All she knew was that he was very sick and they were completely out of money.
Only a very costly operation could save him now and it was looking like there was no one to lend them the money. She heard Dad say to her tearful mom with desperation, “Only a miracle can save him now.”
Tess went to her bedroom and poured all the change she had saved out on the floor and counted it carefully:47 cents. She slipped out of home and made her way to Rexall’s Drug Store. She waited patiently for the pharmacist to give her some attention but he was too busy at this moment. Finally, she took a quarter from her pocket and banged it on the glass counter. That did it ! “And what do you want?” the pharmacist asked in an annoyed tone of voice. “I’m talking to my brother from Chicago Medical University whom I haven’t seen in ages,” he said without waiting for a reply to his question.
“Well, I want to talk to you about my brother,” Tess answered back in the same annoyed tone. “He’s really, really sick and I want to buy a miracle.”
“We don’t sell miracles here, little girl. I’m sorry but I can’t help you,” the pharmacist said, softening a little. “Listen, I have the money to pay for it. If it isn’t enough, I will get the rest. Just tell me how much it costs.” Tess answered with a blind faith.
The pharmacist’s brother was a well-dressed man. He stooped down and asked the little girl, “What kind of a miracle does your brother need?” “I don’t know,” Tess replied with her eyes welling up.
“I just know he’s really sick and Mom says he needs an operation. But my dad can’t pay for it, so I want to use my money.”

It took place in a teacher’s family. One day, Ben was playing basketball in the living room after school when he accidentally threw the ball at a vase sitting on the shelf. The vase dropped to the floor and a large piece broke off. What made Ben more upset was that the vase was not a common decoration but an antique, which was handed down through generations from the 18th century. It was also his mother’s favourite possession. To cover his terrible action, the terrified boy glued the pieces together hastily and put the vase back to its place.
As the mother herself dusted the vase every day, she naturally noticed the cracks(裂纹)that evening. To her surprise, the repair work was actually very good. At dinner time, she asked her boy if he had broken the vase. Fearing punishment, the suddenly inspired boy said that a neighbour’s cat jumped in from the window and he couldn’t drive it away no matter how hard he tried. It raced around the living room and finally her son was lying, for all the windows were closed before she left for work each morning and opened after she returned. However, in the face of her son’s nervous eyes and the suspicious looks of the other family members, Ben’s mother remained calm. She realised she shouldn’t just simply blame and punish her son for lying. She came up with another idea.
Before going to bed, the boy found a note from his mother in his room, asking him to go to the study at once. The boy thought he would now be punished but, as he had already lied, he was determined to deny everything to the end, no matter how angry his mum became.
In the study, calmly bathed in the light, his mother’s face showed no sign of anger. On seeing her son push open the door and cautiously enter, she took a box of chocolates out of a drawer and gave him one.
The mother said, ”This chocolate is a reward for your imagination: a window-opening cat!“

“Now, parents and students separate into two groups. You will be reunited at the end of the campus tour.”
Groups of incoming freshman happily left their parents upon hearing this announcement. I was less than thrilled about starting college, let alone leaving my mother’s side to tour the campus with other freshmen; I felt a little anxious. We followed the senior tour guide. The other freshmen chatted and made causal introductions as I dragged behind. How could I have believed I was ready for this? After all, it had only been a few months since I left the hospital. I was feeling better for the first time in years. But college...?
My thinking was interrupted by a sweet female voice, “Hi, I’m Jennifer.” “I’m Lauren,” I replied. “Where do you prefer to live? At home or on campus?” she said. Before I could reply, the tour guide announced it was time to create our schedules and select the courses we wanted to take.
We crowded into the Student Activity Center. Three seniors handed out thick course bulletins (课程公告) and forms that needed to be filled out. All around me, the sounds of turning papers and writing sounded like those given by an alarm clock. Others seemed to be moving through the process quickly but I hadn’t even opened my course catalog (目录).
“Focus,” I told myself. “just read through the catalog and find the course you like and a schedule that works” psychology A or B, Geology 101, English, history, sections 1, 2, 3…The list went on and on.
I panicked and almost started to cry. How was I supposed to know how to complete it? I was just relearning how to live in the real world, and they wanted me to make a schedule. How I wished someone could help me.
Soon, other freshmen were handing in their forms.

In 1945, a 12-year-old boy saw a beautiful brooch (胸针) in a shop window that set his heart racing. But the price—five dollars—was too high for Reuben Earle. Five dollars would buy almost a week’s food for his family.
Reuben couldn’t ask his father for the money. Everything his father made through fishing went to his mother, Dora. Slim and beautiful, she was the center of the home, the glue that held it together. The housework was never-ending, and she struggled to feed and clothe their five children, but she was happy as her family and their well-being were all she cared about.
Nevertheless, he opened the shop’s weathered (风化的) door and went inside. Standing proudly and straight in his flour-sack (面粉袋改做的) shirt and washed-out trousers, he told the shopkeeper what he wanted, adding, “But I don’t have the money right now. Can you please hold it for me for some time?”
“I’ll try,” the shopkeeper smiled. “People around here don’t usually have that kind of money to spend on things. It should be kept for a while.”
Reuben respectfully touched his worn cap and walked into the sunlight. He would raise the money and not tell anybody, for he thought his mom would get surprised when she saw that brooch. On hearing the sound of hammering from a side street, Reuben had an idea—he could raise money by selling used nail bags. He ran towards the sound and stopped at a construction site. People built their own homes in Bay Roberts, using nails bought in bags from a local factory. Sometimes the used bags were thrown away at the construction site, and Reuben knew he could sell them back to the factory for five cents a piece.
That day he sold two nail bags and hid the money in a rusty soda tin (汽水罐).

My parents do a lot of embarrassing things! Usually, it’s my dad who sings silly songs or tells corny jokes around my friends. But a few weeks ago, it was my mother who played the embarrassing-parent role.
While my mom and I were shopping, we ran into my teacher, who mentioned that the school didn’t have a music teacher to help our class put together a performance for Winter Fair. And, right then and there, my mom said, “I know the perfect song and dance. I’ll teach it to the kids!”
Before I could say “Please don’t”, my mom had agreed to come to my class every morning at 9:30 for a week. Oh, and just to be clear, it’s not as if she’s a professional entertainer. My parents run a small grocery store, and the only singing my mom does is in the shower.
“Um,” I said on our way home, “are you sure this is such a good idea?” “Of course! ” she said. “If we want your school Winter Fair to happen, people need to step up and volunteer.” “I know volunteering is important,” I said, “but couldn’t you help out in Tex and Indi’s kindergarten instead?” She laughed, “Don’t be silly. We will have fun!”
“OK, fellas!” my teacher said at 9:28 on Monday. “We’re going to stop silent reading a little early today because a special guest is here to help us with a performance for Winter Fair. Let’s all welcome Arizona’s mother.”
I looked up to discover my mom standing at the front of the room wearing the world’s silliest snowflake hat. “I’m super excited to be here with you!” my mom said, “I’m going to teach you a fun little song-and-dance performance I learned a few years back, when I did some theater in college. Here goes !”
Oh please, oh please, I said over and over in my head, let there be a fire drill, or an assembly, or a power failure, or anything to stop my mom from completely embarrassing herself- and me!!!
But apparently, my mom was not at all concerned about looking silly. She turned on some background music and started singing and dancing away.

Every time my family makes special plans, they end up getting canceled due to some incidents. Every time that happens, my parents would tell us to look on the bright side and make the best of a bad situation. However, I never managed to do that until this spring.
On a sunny morning last month , my aunt Jen invited us to the annual outdoor spring celebration at her farm. Since my family hadn’t done anything different for ages, the whole family was very excited and everyone pulled his own weight to make sure everything goes as planned. In order to add more fun to this exciting trip, my little sister Indi and my little brother Tex even joined me to make an extra-special treat — cupcakes.
The picnic intended to go from twelve to three. After double checking the car, my parents loaded books, games, picnic blanket, and a whole big pack of food into the car. The moment of our departure finally arrived as the clock struck 11. However, everything went wrong the instant we bravely drove off. First, we had to stop and wait for Tex to find his shoes. Next, as we were driving down the road, we had to go back to the house because my mom forgot her wallet. Then, about halfway to Aunt Jen’s house, we had to drive far out of our way to find a place for Indi to use the bathroom. After that, my parents decided it’d be quicker to take this one little side country road as a shortcut. But the shortcut ended up turning into a long cut! We drove forever on a winding road with wildflower field spreading endlessly out on both sides and the deep green pine trees going on and on within our sight. Spotting hundreds of birds flying in the sky, I was seized by a growing sense of desperation for I entirely had no idea when we could hit our destination.

Tim Robinson, a former junior officer of the British Army, was on holiday in Bridport, Dorset, a town in England. While enjoying a walk down the beach, Tim slipped on a piece of seaweed lying in the sand and fell, breaking his leg.
Unfortunately, Tim did not bring his cell phone with him when he left for his walk. No one was in site, but as Tim lay helpless he remembered his military training and tried to think about what was around to help him. After struggling around on the beach, the pain became too much to handle. He stopped and thought about what to do.
With no phone and no one around, and with his leg hurting greatly, Tim had a decision to make. He could either continue this way in pain and hope that someone happened to see him, or he could try something else. It didn’t matter that his leg had made him partially immobile, Tim still had the ability to crawl (爬行), and so he did.
The choice was easy, but the crawl was tough. Tim told the Daily Mail, “After I crawled to about a mile-and-a-quarter away from the car park, I started flashing my torch in SOS and spinning it over my head to create a Buzz-Saw signal which is a way of attracting helicopters in the armed forces.”
No one seemed to be around. At least, no one could read Tim’s signals for help. Once again, he had to either stay where he was and wait for help or get moving. In his mind he had no choice. There was no response to begin with, so he crawled for five minutes and covered about 50 meters before making the same signal three times. Most people couldn’t imagine crawling for any distance with a broken leg, but Tim wasn’t about to give up.

A Great Monday
Monday started out great. I woke up on time, ate breakfast and did some last minute studying for my math test that day. I was confident that I would get a high mark. I left my house, and minutes later, I was sitting with my friends on the school bus. We were busy talking about how we spent our weekend. At one stop, a boy named Ryan got on hurriedly. He tripped(绊倒) over someone’s foot and THUMP! He fell flat onto the floor.
Every one of us on the bus looked on and laughed crazily. Ryan picked himself up, dusted his jacket and made his way to an empty seat. He tried to laugh with us, but his face was burning with embarrassment. The rest of the morning flew by. I did well in my math test. It wasn’t long before the lunch bell rang. I met my friends from the cheerleading team in the dining hall.
When we finished eating, we headed out to the courtyard to practice a cheer we would do at that night’s football game. After much practice, we finally managed to do the cheer perfectly. We decided to practice it again one last time. Again, just like the rest of my day so far, the cheer was going great. I raised my leg for one last toe touch. RIIPPP! I felt my jeans was torn down in the middle of my backside.
I froze(僵住了). I had no idea what to do but stand still. Then I heard people burst out laughing and I saw them pointing at my broken jeans. Trying to cover myself with my hands, I tried to laugh too, but I felt tears began to well up in my eyes.

After a very meaningful conversation with my dad about the old days, we came up with an object that we both remembered clearly. It was my first bicycle. My mind told me I got it when I was seven, who was cheated to ride it for fifty yards alone the first time I tried!
My dad put together all the small pieces of the bicycle from a beautiful material that he called, “Your own car.” Of course I knew he had some magical ability, but I didn’t think he could make such an awesome object. He added the seat and the pedals (脚踏板) so that I would not have any problems. My dad recalled the bicycle was the smallest he could find while I remember how huge it was. I was so afraid of it and there was no way that I was going to control that monster-sized material. The bicycle was left in my backyard as a decoration for a month because I refused to ride it. Honestly, I was scared to try it.
After a month, my dad gave me a lecture to teach me what being a man was all about. I was finally determined to try it. My dad was proud of me and I felt very manly. He and I went to the park to see what we could do there. The park was empty when we arrived. I had no doubt that my dad told everybody not to be there because we had to use it. I felt sorry for other people, but I was proud to have such an capable person as my dad. We found a smooth and open space. My dad was holding the back part of the seat to make sure I didn’t fell. He promised me that I was not going to fall because he would be running right behind, holding the bicycle.

I had never noticed her. She was not the kind of girl who could draw attention. She was not tall and just plain. In class, she liked sitting at the back, reading or taking notes. It was once I asked her to read aloud the text that I looked at her with new eyes when I heard her standard American pronunciation. Later on, the National College English Speech Contest would be held. I thought it over and filled in her name with a smile. I red-penciled her draft of speech, corrected her pronunciation, and even adjusted her body language.
However, I was always kind of worried because she was too introvert(内向的)and too quiet. Could she seize this rare opportunity?
On the night of the contest, I told her to take it easy. Blushed(脸红的), she looked at me and said nothing.
My heart sank. It seemed that she did tense up. I pated her and let her go to draw lots(抽签). As a result, what she drew was No. 9 while No. 8 was recognized English master-hand(高手).
Sure enough, the English master-hand was fairly successful in the speech with his humor and highly personal style. The whole audience would make a warm applause almost every 30 seconds until she appeared on the stage, still talking over his speech with excitement.
My palms began to sweat. I sat there, with no courage to look at her. It was the first time that she went up the stage, so I couldn't blame her for any slips. But at that moment, I found I was so scared of her failure.
The strong spotlight made her so small and so insignificant that nobody seemed to notice she had been on the stage, I said to myself, no hope.
But the moment that shocked me occurred. I clearly heard a voice, a very loud voice, “Now, please focus on me.” She said this sentence three times in all, louder and louder.

I recently had a challenging time working on a group project. My teacher put me with three people who weren’t all that excited about getting any work done, and the experience was extremely stressful.
Our assignment was to pick one of the 50 states and make a brochure about it.
“Let’s pick Hawaii!” said Cupcake. “Hawaii has super cute swimsuits.”
“That is so true!” said Cookie. “Speaking of swimsuits, there are some get-ready-for-summer sales happening right now.”
“Really? Maybe my mom will take me shopping this weekend,” said Cupcake.
I turned to Volcano. “Which state do you think we should pick?”
Volcano shrugged(耸肩). “I don’t care. But what happened to your hair, Arizona? It looks like it got caught in a blender(搅拌机)!” The rest of Volcano’s comments during the meeting were equally “helpful.”
At our next group meeting, no one seemed very eager to talk about our brochure, so I went ahead and shared the interesting facts I’d learned about Hawaiian food and culture. When I was done, no one said anything, so I pulled out my notebook. “Cupcake, you had offered to search for pictures of Hawaiian sea life. Were you able to find some?”
“I didn’t have time,” she answered, “but here’s a photo of me at the hotel pool in Hawaii.” I looked at the picture she had taped in her notebook and smiled. “You look great, but you probably don’t count as sea life. Cookie, you were going to find some historical information. And Volcano, you were in charge of Hawaiian geography, right?”
“I’ll do my part soon,” said Cookie. “I’ve been really busy lately.”
“Me, too. I’ve been really busy!” said Volcano.
I was getting the impression that no one but me planned to work on the brochure. “What am I going to do? Do I have to do all the work for everyone if I don’t want a bad grade?”

参考答案:
1.One possible version:
Suddenly, the doorbell rang. Grandma opened her eyes and sat up. A confused look appeared on her pale face. Suddenly, a loud laughter came into my ears. “It’s David, the Joke Prince.” I shouted. “We miss you.” David rushed to grandma with a delicate cake in his hands. It was a nice-looking cake decorated with fruits in the shape of heart. “The cake is made by all children in the nursery home.” David said and switched on the recorder; a sweet voice filled the air. It was a song sung by Daisy. Magically, he took out a picture. In the picture, grandma was watching John’s football team playing football.
That evening, grandma called me in her bedroom. She said she was hungry. She drank a big bowl of porridge and tasted a bit of cake. A satisfied smile flashed on her face. Her eyes were shining with joy. With tears in her eyes, she hugged the recorder and picture into her arms. She told me she would go to hospital the next day. She was eager to recover soon to visit the lovely kids. “What a magic visit!” I whispered. Nothing is more fantastic than being needed and valued.

When I opened my bedroom door, I froze at the sight of a neat and orderly room. Mom had obviously decided to clean it herself. I was surprised to see the clean floor below my bed. I picked up the sheet and recognized Mom’s perfect handwriting, saying “I have found that I have also been very critical of you lately. For that, I am truly sorry. I only expect that you are to be your same sweet self.”
I sat down at my desk, staring at those words. A weight seemed to lift from me. I realized that Mom still loved me the same way. When she got home, I found the confidence to let down my guard and talk to her about how I felt. She and my father teamed up to offer some ideas that might help, like joining after-school clubs. As they came in my direction, I put on my brightest and happiest smile. Nervous as I felt, I did my best to keep myself calm and packed bread, salad and meat to those in need. Upon noticing my hurried and trembling hands, the lady next to me smilingly told me that I should first organize these people to queue up and then hand out salad one by one. I immediately sprang into action and the passing time witnessed the smooth process of this event. Every one of them including those who looked very dangerous murmured in a cheering voice “Thank you” and bowed to me sincerely, which brought warmth straight into my heart. It was not until the night wiped out the last ray of sun that we finished our community service for the homeless.
I was so happy that I had earned my service hours in this way. I was aware that my time spent at the soup kitchen was really a rewarding, enriching and life-changing experience. Not only did I clear my previous prejudice against those who deserved compassion and support, but also I served the people who were less fortunate than me. In the meanwhile, I suddenly came to realize that not everyone was blessed with fortune and born to be wealthy, and therefore, we should always keep grateful for what life blessed us with. I now felt it a duty to do what I could for them. Since that day, I have spared more time in offering my service opportunity in dining halls, in the streets, in front of grocery stores.

To our surprise, the farmer declined my father’s offer. Meanwhile, my mother helped treat my lip and swollen eyes with some ice. “Don’t worry about the car. Your safety matters most.” my father comforted me. To my great delight, they decided to accompany me to the graduation ceremony.
I graduated that evening with my family in attendance. With my parent’s company, I enjoyed an unforgettable and meaningful graduation ceremony. Even many years later, the laughter and sweet memory we shared together still lingered in my mind. Had it not been for my father’s unconditional love and encouragement, I would have been sunk in depression and guilt. I finished high school, growing into a loving and confident person. 7. Today she showed up in a raincoat. Seeing her standing in the heavy rain with all the body wet, I finally could not control myself and shouted at her, “Why do you look so flustered? I don’t need you to take me home. I feel ashamed to have a mother like you!” Suddenly, Mom was shocked and silent. Maybe, she had never thought that I would have that feeling of her appearance and our home condition. She said nothing and just covered the raincoat on me. I pushed it away wildly.
Mom tried to cover me with the back of the raincoat again as a storm set in. With a smile, she said, “Dear son, I’m trying my best to earn our living, and I’m sure that if we work harder, we will get whatever we want in the future.” Hearing her words, I felt embarrassed. I thought of the time when she knitted in the deep night and cooked for me in the early morning. Yes, she had always been doing whatever she could to make me live well. But I was still unsatisfied. I had known that if I wanted to get what others had, I should spare no efforts to study hard and get it by myself.

Saturday morning, I stole out early and knocked on the Satos’ door. “Now comes my favorite part,” said Mr. Sato. He offered me a tiny brush. “Take your time, and fill in the crack lines.” At first my hand was shaking, but then I painted with smooth strokes. When I finished, the bowl looked completely different. Instead of the cracks blending in and disappearing, now you could see exactly where it was broken. “This bowl has another layer to its history— it has been broken, repaired, and is stronger because of it,” said Mr. Sato. I took the bowl home quietly.
I was a little nervous to show Mom the bowl, but that night I brought it into her room. She ran her fingertip over the golden veins. “Mr. Sato helped me fix it,” I said. “It’s so beautiful,” she replied. “A new beginning.” I sat on the edge of her bed, and Mom reached out to me. Our hands joined with crisscrossed fingers. Maybe it finally did feel like a fresh start. The bowl was stronger like this too. It was the cracks that were holding it together.

That was when I saw a young mother with her two kids. She was talking on the phone, and her voice told me she was gentle and patient lady. The two kids were neatly dressed and waited quietly beside her. This must be a nice family, I thought to myself. Therefore, I approached to make a request. But as soon as I said, “Excuse me madam” she grabbed both her kids and went away. Did I look like someone trying to hurt people? I felt my heart sinking horribly.
Finally a man wearing a cheap T-shirt and dirty jeans seemed to notice me. I didn’t know why but I just stopped him and made my request. I was expecting him to rush past but he immediately called the number of my driver and waited till my car came to be sure I was picked up, turned around before I could thank him adequately and was gone. Surprised by his kindness, I promised I would do likewise to strangers who sought my help.

14.“I can't believe this is happening” was all I could think. I closed my eyes, covered my ears and shrank as low as I possibly could in my chair. After a few seconds, though, I mustered up enough courage to uncover one ear and peek through a half-open eye. That’s when I saw the expression of pure joy on my mom’s face. She was having so much fun that I couldn’t help smiling. My classmates clapped and cheered, and I heard someone say, “Wow! Arizona’s mother is pretty talented!”
My mom turned out to be more than a little OK at performing. She was also good at teaching us the song and the dance steps, too. We learned quickly. By the time of the fair, I was actually proud of her for putting herself out there for the sake of us kids. Our performance at the Winter Fair was a huge success. As we drove home, I said to my mom, “I’m really glad you volunteered to help my class with the performance.” My mom reached back and squeezed my hand. “Thanks for saying that. I can see why you might’ve been embarrassed, but I had such a great time.”

Dad comforted us and claimed that help would arrive soon. But help did not arrive soon at all. So frustrated was I that I felt the whole world crumbled with tears streaming down my cheeks. Then came my dad’s voice. Look on the bright side, said Dad. Our car couldn’t have picked a prettier place to break down. Mom agreed, getting out the picnic blanket and suggested walking over to that gorgeous wildflower field and have our own springtime celebration.
At first, we kids weren’t exactly jumping up and down about the idea. We carried stuff over to the field, dragged ourselves down on the picnic blanket, and grumbled. But as we started looking around, cool things started happening. Hundreds of butterflies were dancing on the boundless wildflower field, looking like a beautiful scroll spreading out just for us. With a whooshing sound, a flock of birds rose up out of the pine trees, and flew around and around in the most amazing wavelike patterns, right over our heads! Just right there, we enjoyed our hand-made special treats, which were so delicious! It ended up one of the most amazing picnics in my life.

I started to pedal and the bicycle moved. As the wheels responded beautifully and smoothly, it was for the first time that I felt this sensation of freewheeling. Carefully steering the bicycle, my heart thumped as the bicycle was accelerating. Attempting to behave manly, I sat straight, pedaling and wondering whether and when I could handle the bike on my own. Minutes ticked by before it hit me that my dad would be worn out after following me for such a long distance. “Dad, you could let go if you are tired.” I yelled. No response!
I turned around and found my dad was not behind. My mind going blank, I was scared out of wits! I landed on the road and fell off the bike before I knew where the brakes were. Luckily, I only got some scratches on the knees and elbows. Minutes later, my dad caught up and congratulated me on my being manly for cycling 50 yards on my own. After a few more hours’ practice I learnt how to pedal, steer, turn and brake properly. A little frightening as the experience was, I felt the joy of learning to do something independently and grateful for the meaningful memory with my father.

19. The whole audience fell silent. Small and thin as the girl appeared, the determined look on her face instantly caught everyone’s eyes. She glanced at the audience, took a deep breath and began her speech. Everything went smoothly-her voice was clear and influential and her speech was logical and well-organized. Words of power and grace flowed freely out of the girl like magic. She was usually soft-voiced and rarely drew attention in public before. It was like something in a dream!
After her speech ended for a long while, a thunderous applause sounded in the whole audience. When the competition was drawing to a close, still immersed in her stunning performance, all of us waited nervously for the winner’s name to be called. Tears of joy blurred my vision the moment the host announced that she won the first prize. Holding the trophy tightly, she gave me a brilliant smile. “You surely made yourself the most shining focus tonight!” I exclaimed, cheerfully pulling her into my arms. Yes, sometimes a tremendous energy originates from the silent accumulation.

20.As we set the table for dinner, my mom could tell I was stressed out. “What’s going on?” she asked. “No one else in my group is doing any work,” I told her. “So I thought that the only way to get the brochure done is to do it myself.” “Well,” my mom said with a smile. “First of all, I think you should talk with your group about your concerns in a friendly way. Secondly, you should do the best job you can on your part of the assignment.” After hearing my mother’s words, I was lost in thought.
And at our next group meeting, I tried to bring up my concerns in a friendly way. “Since we’re working as a team, we’re all relying on each other to do the best we can,” I told them. “If anyone is having trouble, maybe we can talk about solutions together.” Surprisingly, Cupcake, Cookie, and Volcano all ended up doing their share. They didn’t necessarily do things the way I would have, but I guess that’s the deal with group projects.
