As a sixth grader, I began noticing how other kids were separating into groups. I wasn’t sure where I belonged. I found it hard to fit in.
Our teacher had assigned “secret friends” for the coming week. She wrote each kid’s name on a piece of paper and threw them into a glass; then we each closed our eyes and drew the name of a classmate who we were to secretly befriend and support over the next five school days. By the middle of the week, everyone, including me, had turned this assignment into a contest to see whose secret friend could leave the best gift. We left cards, pens and even money. It seemed that everyone was getting cool presents from their friend except me.
On the last morning of our assignment, I walked into my classroom and noticed there was a package. I opened the wrapping paper and inside was a box of powder (胭脂粉). The girls sitting near me laughed the gift I had received. To make matters worse, the powder had already been opened.
I tried to forget about the embarrassing gift, but when I was in the bathroom during the break, the girls who had seen me open the powder started speaking ill of my secret friend of giving it to me. I quickly joined in “How terrible,” I heard myself saying “What could my friend be thinking by giving me such a stupid gift? My grandmother wouldn't even want it.” The girls laughed at my remarks and rushed out of the bathroom. I stayed to wash my hands and let the water run through my fingers as I thought about what I had just said. It wasn’t normal like me to say mean things like that about someone.
Then I saw my classmate Janet come out of a bathroom booth (厕所隔间), tears streaming down her face.

As Christmas decorations appeared in town, our parents called my two younger brothers and me together. At first, I thought someone had died, because I had never seen my parents look so sad. My brothers and I stood waiting for the awful news.
Mom hugged me as she murmured, “Christmas is going to be different this year. We won't be having a tree or presents. We can barely afford food.”Dad, resting on the couch, beckoned (招手示意) the boys into his arms.“Things will change when I get back to work.”
My family was poorer than dirt. Dad, the only bread-earner in our family, worked in a coal mine. However, soon after returning to work at the end of a long strike, Dad was hurt in a rock fall that broke bones in his foot. Lying on the couch with the swollen foot high on pillows, he didn't talk or smile much. There was little to smile about. No work, no income.
At nine years old, I mothered my younger brothers: Rodney, aged six, and Stevie, three. We shared a small bedroom. That night, after our parents’ announcement, we talked.
Rodney began. “Em, did you see how sad Mommy and Daddy looked? I thought Mommy was gonna cry.
“Me, too. Daddy's foot’s … this big” whispered Stevie, holding out his arms.
“Yeah..We're in hard times," I said.“It makes Mommy and Daddy sad."
“But we don't have to be sad," I added, hoping to brighten the mood.
“Since there are still several weeks to go, maybe we can do something to cheer them up," I said with overdone enthusiasm. The boys proposed, “We can take the money from our piggy bank...earn some more..and surprise them with gifts!"
“I can run errands(跑腿) for Aunt Em and neighbors to earn money," I offered.
“Yeah," Rodney added, “I and Stevie can return bottles and save the deposit money... instead of buying candy!" He pushed Stevie gently with his elbow.
“Yeah!”Stevie clutched his hands together.
We had a plan!
Until they nodded off, I coached my little brothers (especially Stevie) in ways to guard our secret. “Don't talk about it during the day."

The first time I saw Awol was on my doorstep in December 2016. He was super-cute, with black ears, a little white stripe and a soft white belly. I would give him a tickle (挠痒) behind the ear and he would rub around my legs to say hello. I had no idea where he came from.
I work shifts for a railway line and even if I got back late he would be waiting. As soon as I pulled into my street, he would follow my car, walk up the drive and roll over, wanting his belly tickled. I never fed him and had no intention of taking him in. I had never been a cat person. I always had dogs.
It was my friend who named him Awol. He wasn’t microchipped, so we gave him paper collars and put up posters, but no one got in touch.
He visited my house every day for three months. Every time I shut the door I could see him through the glass, staring up at me; he would meow for ages, trying to come in. It was heartbreaking. So, in March 2017, I decided to take him in.
I was slightly worried at first, because I had a parrot called Shitehawk that I had had for 15 years. To my surprise, they got on fine, Awol was nervous initially, wandering around sniffing everything. The next minute, he was zooming around the house.
I have a three-bedroom house and live alone, so I gave him free space to move around. He picked the spare room, but after a few weeks he began to sleep in my bed. He often purred (呼噜呼噜叫) like a motor running, pressing his feet, one after another, into my belly.
I adopted Awol around the time my grandmother, 80, who was my best friend, went into hospital.

As soon as his workday ended, Jordan rushed out of the office. He drove his car to the nearest supermarket to prepare for his mother’s surprise birthday party that evening. Unfortunately for Jordan, it was Friday and the parking lot was packed with shoppers. He had to drive around looking for a space to park.
After nearly 20 minutes, he noticed a space, but that was specially used for unloading goods. He hesitated for a while, but thinking shopping would take him just a few minutes, he parked his car there and rushed into the supermarket. He hurried down the aisles (过道), checking the shopping list his sister had messaged him. Soon Jordan had almost everything. Now he just needed to pick out a birthday cake.
“Just a few minutes more, ” he repeated these words in his mind several times as he sped down the target aisle. But when he got there, there was a long line of people wanting to buy cakes or cookies. He was getting more and more anxious, and began to regret not ordering a cake the day before.
Half an hour later, it was finally his turn. He asked for a chocolate cake, and carefully placed it in the cart. Now he could go! Jordan raced towards the nearest till (收款处).“Oh, I really have good luck!” he thought. “There’s no one there! ” However, out of the corner of his eye, he saw someone approaching the till ahead of him.
It was a young woman. Thinking he would surely be late if he failed to check out before the woman, he decided to take action. He pushed his shopping cart forward and narrowly missed hitting her. “Hey! ” the woman cried. “Be careful. You could have hurt me!

It was Hoppy’s first day at his new school. He didn’t know anyone yet, but he had seen some cool kids at the beach during the summer.
Billy, one of the cool kids, sat down next to Hoppy at break and started to have a talk. They discovered they shared the same interest, surfing, but Hobby went to the beach with his dad, instead of hanging out there with friends, which was laughed at by Billy. He invited Hoppy to the beach with his friends. Hoppy nodded, happy to have a new friend.
After school Hoppy met Billy and his three friends at the school gate, one of whom tried to punch Hoppy’s stomach as a way of “greetings”. While walking on the street, they met a boy, having trouble with his bike. Billy and his friends started to tease the boy. The boy looked up uneasily about this interest in him and his flat-tyre.
Billy nudged the boy so that he fell on the kerb (侧石) and broke his glasses. Billy and his friends ran off down the street, laughing. However, Hoppy just stood there.
The boy, Gerald, sat on the kerb, crying now. He looked up at Hoppy and begged him not to hit him. Hoppy smiled and said, “I’ve never beaten anyone up. Only bullies (霸凌) and cowards do that. Really strong people keep their fists in their pockets. That’s what my dad says.” Gerald seemed relieved. They walked to Gerald’s house, talking about going to the beach together. Their friendship grew.
One Sunday, Hoppy went to the beach with his father. Billy and his friends were there. Billy called out to Hoppy, complaining about helping Gerald. He spoke in an unpleasant tone, saying his dad was his babysitter. Hoppy smiled and ignored him.
Gerald arrived to see Hoppy. When he saw the boys, his heart sank. Billy and his gang surrounded him. “Hoppy’s tricked me,” thought Gerald, and he started to walk away. Billy ran after Gerald and tripped him. Gerald fell onto the sand, but picked himself up and asked them to leave him alone. However, Billy didn’t stop and tripped Gerald again.

Kumar was a hard-working and ambitious student in Academic Magnet High School, who had a preference for the engineering design. One day he was walking home from school. Nothing pleased him more than to walk along the busy street and look at the glass doors of the shops. When doing so, he never failed to stop to look at the latest laptops in the computer shop. He was thinking. “I would love so much to own that laptop. But nobody will buy it for me.”
So Kumar thought hard of what to do. The school holiday was coming up next week. An idea struck him. He would do odd jobs to earn some money. Yes! That was what he would do.
His house is next to East Lake shore Drive in Chicago, where there stand varieties of cottages with beautiful gardens. It follows that he designed a plan of working in his neighbors’ gardens. First, he would approach them and ask them to let him clean up their gardens. After his finishing the job. each owner would probably pay him $50 or $ 60. Working in more than ten gardens would enable him to accumulate enough cash to buy his beloved laptop. Making up his mind triggered a feeling of joy and a brisk walk home.
The next day. he went around his neighborhood and asked the residents if he could clean their gardens. He asked them politely. “Excuse me. can I work in your garden during the school holiday?” Many of the owners were kind of curious about what Kumar was requiring and asked why. Having known about his thirsty for a laptop, they all replied “Yes”. They liked the courteous (有礼貌的) boy.
So Kumar started working in his first house. He woke up early that morning. He took three hours to clear the rubbish and cut the grass. It was not easy work. He had to mow the grass. After that, he had to pull the weeds. Then, he had to arrange the flowerpots. This arduous (艰巨的) work went on for a week. Consequently, he had no time for games or even watching television.

Molly ran back home from school and dropped her schoolbag on the sofa. Then on the table she saw “Mum’s Wish Book” —a mail order catalog from a gift shop. “Mum,” she said excitedly to herself, “this year you’ll get the gloves you want!” Molly had walked a dog for a neighbor and saved her money all year to buy Mum the gloves.
She opened “Mum’s Wish Book” and hoped that she could find these gloves in it. So carefully did she look through that tears ran down her face when she saw the gloves in the catalog. Mum wouldn’t buy them for herself, because the family had a hard time on the farm. She once heard Mum say to Dad, “Maybe some day, I’ll have the money to get them.”
Molly ran out by the back door and went straight to the post office. There she carefully filled out the order form torn from the catalog.
“I need to buy a stamp to send the form.” She said to Mr. Smith, the only worker in the post office.
“Umm, a pair of gloves?” said Mr. Smith, as he passed a stamp to her.
“Yes, It’s a Christmas gift for Mum, but please don’t tell her. It’s our secret, OK?” Molly didn’t realize how white Mr. Smith’s beard was until that moment. In fact, he reminded her of Santa Claus.
As Molly walked back home, she decided to tell Dad her secret. “You’ve got to check the mailbox every day,” said Molly quietly to Dad. He nodded, with a big smile.
Coming home from school every day, Molly peeked at Dad when Mum wasn’t looking , but every time he shook his head.

One pleasant New-year morning, Edward rose, and washed and dressed himself in haste (匆忙). He wanted to be first to wish a happy New Year.
He looked in every room, and shouted the words of welcome. He ran into the street, to repeat them to those he might meet.
When he came back, his father gave him two bright, new silver dollars. His face lighted up as he took them. He had wished for a long time to buy some pretty books that he had seen at the bookstore. He left the house with a light heart, intending to buy the books.
As he ran down the street, he saw a poor German family, the father, mother, and three children shivering with cold. “I wish you a happy New Year,” said Edward, as he was gayly passing on. The man shook his head. “You do not belong to this country,” said Edward. The man again shook his head, for he could not understand or speak our language.
But he pointed to his mouth, and to the children, as if to say, “These little ones have had nothing to eat for a long time.” Edward quickly understood that these poor people were in distress (困境). He took out his dollars, and gave one to the man, and the other to his wife.
How their eyes sparkled with gratitude! They said something in their language, which doubtless, meant, “We thank you a thousand times, and will remember you in our prayers.

The director asked, "What did your mother do?" The youth answered, "My mother worked as a clothes cleaner." The director requested the youth to show his hands. The youth showed a pair of hands that were smooth and perfect.
The director asked, "Have you ever helped your mother wash the clothes before?" The youth answered, "Never. My mother always wanted me to study and read more books. Furthermore, my mother can wash clothes faster than me."

My wife, our two kids under 4 and I were in the post office a few weeks ago. We have to go there every month to pay various fees. I was being served when an old man in his eighties, with obvious, significant health issues, was waiting to pay his electricity bill. He was struggling to walk on a walking stick, and his hands and arms were shaking all the time. I knew by feeling that the old man was in trouble. After asking, I figured out that the old man's problem was that he was 20 cents short.
The lady behind the counter had the old man in such a state, looking for a further 20 cents, and he was shaking, obviously looking upset. But instead of letting the man go, she insisted that if his bill wasn't going to be paid in full, the electricity company would probably give a fine on his next bill for unpaid fees.
Hearing this, I got really upset. So I went over and asked the lady behind the counter to give ALL of his money back to the old man and I handed her my debit card and paid the bill for him.
The old man was asking “why are you doing this?” as he began crying. I told him because it was the right thing to do. He thanked me over and over and smiled at my two kids on his way out of the post office.
The best part of this event was that the old man walked out of the post office and straight to Woolies and bought a full basket of food, which he wouldn't have been able to buy had I not done that at the post office.

We awoke in the morning, transforming from sad children to the secret agents on an important mission! The following weeks saw me dashing home from school each day determined to earn a penny. I was usually greeted by secret winks and grins- one with a missing tooth, and the other with tiny, straight teeth- both assuring me our secret was safe. A few days before Christmas, we gleefully went shopping. We bought Mom a new apron, and for Dad, a pair of leather slippers. The night of Christmas Eve seemed endless. I awoke occasionally, or one of my brothers woke me asking, “How long till daylight?”
On Christmas morning, we hurried into the living room and handed the gifts to Mommy and Daddy. Surprised and stunned, they showered us with tons of confusing questions. “How did you..?” “Where did you..?” “Who gave you...?"" As we explained how we'd schemed, earned and saved our money, their faces relaxed into expressions of astonishment. Then, with glistening tears, Mom and Dad wrapped us three into their arms. On this special Christmas morning, with the five of us hugging, talking, laughing and listening with fresh affection and gratitude, I understood that rich or poor, we would keep together and be happy in one another.

Gerald, relieved to see them go, sat down on the ground, his hands on his injured knees, which had grazed against the ground when Billy tripped him.
Paragraph 2:
Hoppy and his dad came up beside Gerald, but Gerald said to them, “Why don’t you go with your friends?” “I’ve never been friends with them,”Hoppy explained. “They bully people. I despise that.” He went on: “I’m sorry. I wasn’t brave enough to come out and help you.” Gerald forgave Hoppy. Hoppy and his father then took Gerald home, where they attended to his wounds. Hoppy’s mother made a delicious dinner for them, and she was glad that Hoppy had made such a brave and kind friend as Gerald. Gerald was proud of himself for standing up to the bullies.

Unfortunately, the old man’s wife passed away last year, and he had lived alone since then. We felt really sorry for him.

He hurried down the aisles (过道), checking the shopping list his sister had messaged him. Soon Jordan had almost everything. Now he just needed to pick out a birthday cake.

The director asked, "Did you obtain any scholarships in school?" The youth answered, "None."
The director asked, "Was it your father who paid for your school fees?" The youth answered, "My father passed away when I was one year old, so it was my mother who paid for all my school fees."
