Apples, oranges and other fruit should be kept in the fridge to last long, new supermarket labels will say, in a move which could tell the end of the traditional fruit bowl. The labels will form part of the Government-backed guidance to help consumers reduce the amount of food they throw by changing advice on packs of supermarket food.
Under the plan supermarkets will introduce a new “Little Blue Fridge” sign for food which should be kept chilled(冷藏), or benefit from being kept in the fridge to prevent it going off. The sign will appear on much food which is not usually kept in the fridge. For example the Waste and Resources Action Program (WRAP) pointed out that apples, oranges and pears, which are usually kept in a fruit bowl, should in fact be stored in the fridge.
Dr. Andrew Parry, a special advisor on food and drink, said, “Most fresh fruit and vegetables will keep fresher for longer if kept in their packaging and in the fridge. Generally a good way to manage fruit at home is to take out enough into the fruit bowl—if you prefer it at room temperature; but use your fridge as cold storage for the majority. This will give you more time to enjoy your food, and help cut down on waste.”
Environment Minister Thérèse Coffey said, “We know that confusing(难以理解的) labels can lead to food waste by suggesting that edible items need to be thrown away sooner. This new guidance will make packaging much clearer for consumers, saving them money and reducing waste. I encourage all food businesses, large and small, to use this guidance to help them put the right date mark on food and help to guide people on the freezing products which are crucial(至关重要的)to reducing the amount of edible food thrown away.”
Heather Hancock, chairman at the Food Standards Agency, said, “I think this clear guidance can help deal with food waste, without damaging the safety of food. It will help businesses supply food that is properly described and stored, and safely provided to consumers.”

For a few seconds on a sunny afternoon last April, renewables broke a record for California’s main electric network, providing enough power to supply 94.5% of demand. The moment was praised as a milestone on the path to decarbonisation(脱碳).But what happens when the sunsets and the winds stop?
Handling the varied power production of renewables will require cheap storage for hours or even days at a time. New types of iron-based batteries might be up to the task.
Many firms are engaged in developing these kinds of batteries. Oregon- based ESS,whose batteries can store energy for between four and twelve hours, launched its first network-scale projects in 2021.Massachusetts-based Form Energy, which raised $ 240 million in 2021,has batteries that store power for up to 100 hours. Its first installation will be a one-megawatt(兆瓦)pilot plant in Minnesota, planned to be completed in 2023.
Both companies rely on batteries that use iron, one of the most abundant materials on the planet. This means that their offerings could eventually be cheaper than other network storage candidates. Form says its batteries could eventually cost just $ 20 per kilowatt-hour,lower than even optimistic predictions for lithium-ion(锂离子)batteries in the next several decades.
There are still challenges to address:iron batteries typically have low efficiency, meaning a good part of the energy that’s put into them can’t be recovered. Unwanted side reactions can also degrade them over time. But if iron-based batteries can be applied widely,at a low enough cost, they could help power more of the world with renewable energy.

It has always been horrible for me to picture my life in old age. My recent visits to the senior care center, however, relieved some of my fears and provided valuable food for thought.
Looking for meaningful ways to spend my weekends after my exams, I signed up for a program of arts and crafts for the elderly run by my schoolmates. I was informed that the Renci Nursing Home, where the program would be held, accommodated some of the less fortunate elderly in Singapore. Some background research gave me the impression that many of them suffered from physical problems and had little family support. As a result, I expected the atmosphere there to be discouraging. And, judging by the lack of interest in the painting activities, I truly sensed a feeling of aimlessness there. Given that we live in a society in which the relationships between the generations are weakening, perhaps the disappointing atmosphere in the home wasn’t surprising. The people were cut off from the ties that make life meaningful.
Is it safe to say then that our lives after retirement will likely feel aimless? But after I spoke to a Portuguese-Chinese man, I thought that this wasn’t necessarily so. At the age of 90, he displayed a surprisingly strong sense of control over his life. His liveliness was exceptional among the elderly population in the home. He had spent his life either traveling around the world as a backpacker, or working hard in Singapore to save up for his trips. He had made it a rule to learn foreign languages, exercise and eat healthily- something he continued to do during his stay in the nursing home.
While he spoke to me about how his time in London had shaped his view of cultural difference,I looked into his eyes. I knew that this was the kind of control over life that I wanted for myself. I don’ t want to spend half of my time wandering about in foreign countries like he did, but I do want to appreciate the richness that life has to offer.
9.Why did the author go to the Renci Nursery Home?
A.It was run by his schoolmates. B.He meant to learn arts and crafts.
C.It housed some unfortunate seniors. D.He wanted a significant weekend.
10.What did the author think of the nursing home before he entered it?
A.It was filled with depression. B.It solved physical problems.
C.It was full of impressive activities. D.It connected different generations.
11.What mainly helped the author change his attitude toward old age?
A.The efforts of the elderly. B.The view of cultural difference.
C.The liveliness of an old man. D.The care of the nursing home.
12.What can we learn about the author?
A.He was trying to call on people to care for the elderly.
B.He found what he wanted for his life--living by his own law.
C.He would travel by himself like a backpacker.
D.He made adequate preparations for his old age.
They say procrastination (拖延) is the thief of time — actually deadlines are. New research has found that if you want someone to help you out with something, it is best not to set a deadline at all. But if you do set a deadline, make it short.
Professor Stephen Knowles tested the effect of deadline length on task completion for their research.Participants were invited to complete an online survey concerning a charity donation. They were given either one week, one month, or no deadline to respond. Professor Knowles says although the topic of the survey is about charity, the results are true of any situation where someone asks another person for help.
The study found responses to the survey were lowest for the one-month deadline and highest when no deadline was specified. No deadline and the one-week deadline led to many early responses, while a long deadline appeared to give people permission to procrastinate, and then forget. Professor Knowles wasn’t surprised to find that specifying a shorter deadline increased the chances of receiving a response compared to a longer deadline. However, he did find it interesting that they received the most responses when no deadline was specified.
“We interpret this as evidence that specifying a longer deadline, as opposed to a short deadline or no deadline at all, removes the urgency to act,” he says. “People therefore put off undertaking the task, and since they are inattentive or forget, postponing it results in lower response rates.”
He says of the research that it is possible that not specifying a deadline might still have led participants to assume that there is an unspoken deadline. Professor Knowles hopes his research can help reduce the amount of procrastinating people do. “Many people procrastinate. They have the best intentions of helping someone out, but just do not get around to doing it.”
13.Why did Professor Knowles do the research?
A.To study the role a deadline plays in procrastination.
B.To find out whether people are interested in charity.
C.To attract public attention to the effects of procrastination.
D.To test the effect of procrastination on task completion.
14.What most likely leads to procrastination?
A.No deadlines. B.Short deadlines. C.Specific deadlines. D.Long deadlines.
15.What’ s the attitude of Professor Knowles to the findings of the study?
A.Interested. B.Conservative. C.Confused. D.Unsurprised.
16.Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A.Procrastination — the Thief of Time B.Procrastination — the Urgent Problem to Solve
C.Deadline — the Key to Reducing Procrastination D.Deadline — a Result of Procrastination
According to the statistics shared by UNESCO, at least 43% of the total languages being spoken across the world are in danger of extinction. Moreover, many languages around the world have less than 1,000 speakers now. Linguists (语言学家) and researchers believe that by the end of the century, at least half of the world’ s languages will have died.
Language activists and people who speak these endangered languages spare no effect to fight back. Scientists believe that digitalization might be our only hope to preserve some of these quickly disappearing languages in the online world.
For example, Oxford University Press launched Oxford Global Languages a few years ago, advocating “digitally underrepresented” languages. They are focused on promoting languages that might have close to a million speakers worldwide, but have little or no online presence. Therefore, they have been creating digital dictionaries as a fundamental building block to help preserve them.
There have been countless other projects like this with the same aim. Another is the Rosetta Project, which aims to create a handheld digital library that will carry more than 1,500 languages. It will be appropriately sized to fit nicely into our hands, and will come with around 13,000 pages of information. Projects like these have as their main goals to ensure the preservation of local languages long after their speakers have died.
Countless languages will continue to perish as the remaining speakers die. Of course, we cannot only rely on digitization to deal with worldwide languages loss. However, it is a step in the right direction. These digital tools offer endangered languages many opportunities to bounce back and survive.

Rescarchers in the US treated healthy mice with a form of gene therapy that refreshed older cells, making the animals more youthful according to biological markers that are used to measure the effects of ageing. Repeating the trick in humans is far from straightforward, but the findings will fuel interest in new therapiesthat aim to slow or reverse theageing process as a means of tackling age-related diseases such as cancers and Alzheimer’s.
The scientists drew on previous work by the Japanese Nobel winner Prof Shinya Yamanaka, who showed that a mixture of four molecules(原子)—known as Yamanaka factors—can turn adult cells into youthful stem cells that are capable of forming almost any tissue (组织) in the body.
Writing in the journal Nature Aging, the US team led by Jasper and Prof Juan Carlos Izpisua Belmonte at the Salk Institute in California and the San Diego Altos Institute, found that mice who received Yamanaka factors for several months were similar to younger animals in many ways, with their skin in particular showing signs of rejuvenation(恢复青春).
The experiments showed that rejuvenation was more effective when the therapy was given for a long time—7 to 10 months—starting when the animals were 12 to 15 months old, equal to age 35 to 50 in humans. Whén older animals, equal to 80 years old in human terms, were treated for one month, the scientists saw little impact.
Rather than using Yamanaka factors to rejuvenate aged humans, many scientists suspect that new drugs will be needed to partially reprogram cells safely and effectively. “In theory, biological age reversal or reduction could be possible. However, we are at very early stages where we need to understand the basic science behind it much better,” said Dr.Tamir Chandra, an expert in the biology of ageing at the University of Edinburgh.
21.Which of the following best describes the findings of the research?

B.Humans may have better outcomes than animals.
C.The rejuvenation is more effective for people aged 12 to 15.
D.Older animals can live longer with the help of the treatment.
24.What do Dr.Tamir Chandra’s words mainly tell us?
A.The researches are far from complete.
B.The process of growing old cannot be stopped.
C.The basic rule behind rejuvenation is fully understood.
D.The new drug has been put into use safely and effectively.
A Dutch city will become the first in the world to ban meat advertisements from public spaces in an effort to reduce consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. The ban also covers holiday flights, fossil fuels and cars that run on fossil fuels. The ban is delayed until 2024 due to existing contracts with companies that sell the products.
Haarlem, which lies to the west of Amsterdam and has a population of about 160,000,will bring the ban into effect from 2024 after meat was added to a list of products deemed to contribute to the climate crisis. Advertisements will not be allowed on Haarlem’s buses, shelters and screens in public spaces, prompting complaints from the meat sector that the government is “going too far in telling people what’s best for them”.
Recent studies suggest global food production is responsible for one-third of all planet-heating emissions, with the use of animals for meat accounting for twice the pollution of producing plant-based foods. Forests that absorb carbon dioxide are cut down for the food of animals while fertilisers used for growing their feed are rich in nitrogen(氮),which can contribute to air pollution, water pollution and climate change. Livestock also produces large quantities of methane(甲烷),a powerful greenhouse gas.
Zlggy Klazes,a councillor from the GroenLinks party, said she had not known the city would be the world’s first to enforce such a policy when she proposed it. She told the Haarlem105 radio channel:“We are not about what people are baking and roasting in their own kitchen;if people want to continue eating meat, it’s fine. We can’t tell people there’s a climate crisis and meanwhile, encourage them to buy products that are part of the cause. Of course, there are a lot of people who find the decision shocking and unreasonable, but there are also a lot of people who think it’s fine.”
25.What does the meat sector think of the ban?
A.Disapproving.
B.Neutral.
C.Indifferent.
D.Positive.
26.What do recent studies show?
A.Nitrogen is harmful to the environment.
B.Methane mainly comes from livestock.
C.Meat consumption causes more pollution.
D.People cut down trees for human habitation.
27.What message do Ziggy Klazes’s words convey?
A.She is the first to ban meat advertisement.
B.She is in favor of banning meat advertising.
C.She emphasizes the advantage of eating meat.
D.She cares about what people cook in the kitchen
28.What is the best title for the text?
A.Fossil fuels are banned in Dutch city.
B.Dutch city decreases meat production.
C.Dutch city bans meat advertisements in public.
D.Greenhouse gas emissions are limited in Dutch city.
I first came to Berwickshire for a job-to be the Ranger for the Berwickshire Marine Reserve.I was then Senior Ranger for St Abb’s Head National Nature Reserve and I set up my own business, In Our Nature, offering wildlife journeys, walks, talks and courses in 2020. There’s so much I love about Berwickshire. Its stunning scenery. Its variety of landscapes and habitats and range of amazing wildlife, both above and below the water. Its friendly people. In places you can feel like you are a million miles from anywhere, when in reality you’re just an hour’s drive from Edinburgh.
The thing that supports everything on the Berwickshire Coast is its varied and fascinating geology(地质).The jewel in the crown is Siccar Point. With its world-famous non-conformity(均变),it’s considered the birthplace of modern geology. The geology not only shapes the landscape, but it also impacts on the wildlife, forming varied habitats from steep sheltered valleys and towering cliffs to sheltered sandy bays.
There’s nothing I like more than being out in nature and sharing my passion with others, so starting up In Our Nature was a no brainer. In the warmer months I offer tours on land and sea to help folk enjoy the amazing wildlife and scenery of the Berwickshire Coast. In the darker months my online courses help people learn about wildlife in the hope that it will increase their enjoyment of the marine and coastal environments they spend time in.
My favourite spot on the Berwickshire Coast has got to be a place called Petticowick. The views up the coast and inland to the Mire Loch are second to none. It’s a place where you can marvel at geology which covers unimaginable periods of time. You can listen to and watch thousands of seabirds that return to the cliffs to breed each spring. Or witness all the amazing activity of the breeding seal colony on the beach below during the early winter.

根据第三段中“No deadline and the one-week deadline led to many early responses, while a long deadline appeared to give people permission to procrastinate, and then forget. (没有截止日期和一周的截止日期导致了许多早期的回复,而较长的截止日期似乎允许人们拖延,然后忘记)”可知,设定很长的截止日期最有可能导致拖延。故选D。
15.推理判断题。根据第三段中“Professor Knowles wasn’t surprised to find that specifying a shorter deadline increased the chances of receiving a response compared to a longer deadline.( Knowles教授毫不惊讶地发现,与较长的截止日期相比,指定较短的截止日期会增加收到回复的机会)”可推断,Knowles教授对这项研究结果的态度是不惊讶的。故选D。
通读全文,再根据文章第一段“They say procrastination is the thief of time — actually deadlines are. (人们说拖延是时间的小偷——实际上截止日期才是罪魁祸首)”以及第三段“specifying a shorter deadline increased the chances of receiving a response compared to a longer deadline.

根据第一段前两句“According to the statistics shared by UNESCO, at least 43% of the total languages being spoken across the world are in danger of extinction. Moreover, many languages around the world have less than 1,000 speakers now. (根据联合国教科文组织分享的统计数据,全世界使用的语言中至少有43%面临灭绝的危险。此外,现在世界上许多语言的使用者不到1000人)”可知,43% 的语言面临灭绝,一些语言的使用者人数甚至不超过1000人,这些数字是说明很多语言濒临灭绝。故选A项。
根据文章第三段“For example, Oxford University Press launched Oxford Global Languages a few years ago, advocating “digitally underrepresented” languages. They are focused on promoting languages that might have close to a million speakers worldwide, but have little or no online presence. Therefore, they have been creating digital dictionaries as a fundamental building block to help preserve them. (例如,牛津大学出版社几年前推出了牛津全球语言,倡导“数字代表性不足”的语言。他们专注于推广可能在全球有近一百万使用者的语言,但很少或根本没有在线存在。因此,他们一直在创建数字词典作为帮助保存它们的基本构建块)”可知,Oxford Global Languages 在创建数字词典,努力以数字的形式保存一些语言的基本构建块。故选D项。
19.推理判断题。根据第四段“There have been countless other projects like this with the same aim. Another is the Rosetta Project, which aims to create a handheld digital library that will carry more than 1,500 languages. It will be appropriately sized to fit nicely into our hands, and will come with around 13,000 pages of information.Projects like these have as their main goals to ensure the preservation of local languages long after their speakers have died.(有无数其他类似的项目具有相同的目标。另一个是罗塞塔项目,该项目旨在创建一个手持式数字图书馆,将承载1500多种语言。它的大小将适当,以适合我们的手,并将提供大约13000页的信息。像这样的项目的主要目标是确保在当地语言使用者去世后很长一段时间内得到保护)”可知, Rosetta Project项目的目标是确保当地的语言在使用者在去世之后很长一段时间后可以得到保护,即它保护了语言的多样性。故选C项。
20.词义猜测题。根据上文第四段最后一句“Projects like these have as their main goals to ensure the preservation of local languages long after their speakers have died.(像这样的项目的主要目标是确保在当地语言使用者去世后很长一段时间内得到保护)”和下文最后一段第二句“Of course, we cannot only rely on digitization to deal with worldwide languages loss.(当然,我们不能仅仅依靠数字化来应对全球语言的流失) ”可知,此处指的是语言使用者逝世之后,语言就会消失,而科学家们现在在用数字化保护这些语言,确保在语言使用者逝世后语言依然可以得到保护,故推测perish是“消失”的意思。故选B项。
