Paragliding(滑翔伞运动) is a kind of flying. but instead of the wing(机翼) being made of metal, wood or plastic, it is made of nylon or polyester. The wing is attached to a harness(安全) by lines where a pilot sits, similar to a parachute(降落伞).
    Is it safe?
Paragliding is as safe as sailing and deep-sea diving. The big advantage is that it’s probably the slowest form of flying, so if you do crash, you’ll hit the ground quite gently! It’s a very relaxing sport as you’re mostly sitting down. Yet, you’ll probably experience pain in the parts of the body you didn’t know you had while learning, but many of those will be due to the walk up the training hill to start.
    Where do I learn?
There are lots of schools, mainly based inland by suitable hills or mountains, and there are also schools on the coast near high mountains. These are very attractive, though the scenery of landing in the sea seems to discourage beginners! It takes seven days to get your basic license;then you’re free to fly independently at sites across the country.
    What do I need?
Pilots normally wear warm clothes in case they get very high up, and a helmet in case they fall down on landing. In terms of equipment, schools provide basic training, canopies, harnesses, etc. However, you’ll probably want to buy your own more advanced equipment, which you’ll be able to choose much better once you’ve tried some out on your course.
    Who can do it?
There’s no upper age limit if your instructor judges you are able, but the youngest is 14. Anybody with good eyesight and good balance is a good paraglider pilot.
Flying a paraglider is a great sport. We hope to see you in the air with us this season!
    1. What do you know about paragliding?
    A. It’s exciting but tiring. B. It’s safe and relaxing.
    C. It’s attractive but expensive. D. It’s fast and challenging.
    2. What basic requirement should you meet if you want to learn paragliding?
    A. You keep your balance well.
    B. You need to be 14 years old.
    C. You need to have very good sight and nerve.
    D. You should bring your own paragliding equipment.
    3. Where can the text be found?
    A. People. B. Business Week. C. Sports World. D. Science.

As the song “Bridge Over Troubled Water” echoed across the ice rink at the Beijing 2022, Chinese skaters Sui Wenjing and Han Cong completed their touching but powerful performance on Long Program, which successfully earned them their first-ever Olympic championship title and China’s second gold in the pair skating event at the Olympic Games. (The first was from Shen Xue and Zhao Hongbo at 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics.) Also, it was a perfect conclusion to their 15 years of cooperation.
Sui and Han, born in 1995 and 1992 respectively, had won almost every youth competition they took part in when they were young, yet constant injuries and accidents created a massive barrier to overcome when it came to reaching the Olympic podium(领奖台).
In 2014, an ankle injury caused Sui constant pain, forcing the pair lose their qualification for the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics. That should have been their first opportunity for Olympic gold. “It was a huge regret for us after preparing so much,” recalled Sui.
In 20l6, Sui finally underwent foot ligament(韧带) surgery, after which she went through a long recovery period. The doubt about whether she would ever skate again almost left her in despair. For Han, the training arena and the hospital were the only two places that Han would go.
After four years of waiting, the pair had the chance to compete at Pyeongchang 2018. Their performance there won them a silver medal.
Another four years later in Beijing, the then two-time world champions finished their entire routine with a total of 155.47 points, surpassing Team China’s top competitor, ROC’S Evgenia Tarasova and Vladimir Morozov, who won silver.
Talking about her future career direction, Sui said she is applying to be a choreography major, as she believes figure skating is a combination of this art form and skating techniques. “I have too many creative ideas for figure skating. It requires continuous learning and of course an endless passion for skating as well as perseveration, which is the key to success.”
    4. What does the first paragraph focus on?
    A. Good performance of the two skaters. B. Sui and Han’s Olympic championship.
    C. Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics. D. China’s two golds in great sports events.
    5. What can we know about Sui and Han’s experiences?
    A. Their 15-year cooperation was filled with ups and downs.
    B. Physical problems had bothered the pair for 4 years.
    C. Han had to stop practising when Sui was in hospital.
    D. The 2014 Olympics laid the foundation for their final success.
    6. What saying can be used to summarize the pair’s struggles and fighting?
    A. Practice makes perfect. B. No way is impossible to courage.
    C. Adversity makes a man wise, not rich. D. The path to glory is always rugged.
    7. What can be inferred from the text?
    A. The pair have participated in four Olympic Games.
B Sui may retire after winning this Olympic championship.
    C. Ranking second in 2018 made the pair completely disappointed.
    D. The two gold medals at the Olympic Games are eight years apart.
B 5. A 6. D 7. B

Sleeping and learning go hand in hand, which studies have shown for years. Even a brief sleep can improve your memory and sharpen your thinking. But according to a new study the relationship goes deeper than that — it turns out that a sleeping brain can be taught a thing or two, which is contrary to most scientists’ thought.
“The brain is not passive while you are sleeping; you can do quite a lot of things while you are asleep,” said Anat Arzi, who researched the sense of smell and also worked on the new study.
Arzi and her coworkers didn’t try to teach the sleeping volunteers any complex information, like new words or facts. Instead, the scientists taught sleeping volunteers to match smells and sounds.
When we smell something nice, we automatically take deep breaths. When we smell something bad, we automatically take short breaths. Arzi and her coworkers based their experiment on these reactions. It is common sense that our senses don’t tum off while we are sleeping.
Once the volunteers fell asleep in the lab, the scientists went to work. They gave the volunteers a whiff (一阵气味) of something pleasant, like shampoo, and at the same time played a particular musical note. The volunteers didn’t wake up, but they did hear — and sniff (用鼻子闻) deeply. Then the scientists gave the volunteers a whiff of something repulsive, like bad fish, and played a different musical note. Again, the volunteers heard and smelled — a short snort (鼻息声) this time — but didn’t wake up.
After just four repetitions, volunteers made a connection between the musical notes and their paired smells. When the scientists played the musical tone that went with good smells, the sleepers breathed in the air deeply — even though there was no good smell to sniff. And when the scientists played the musical tone that went with unpleasant smells, the sleepers breathed in the air briefly — despite there being no bad smell.
    8. What did most scientists use to think?
    A. Sleep could not improve one’s memory.
    B. Sleep could not make one think quickly.
    C. Sleeping and learning were not closely connected.
    D. A sleeping brain couldn’t learn anything new.
    9. On what knowledge did the researchers base their experiment?
    A. That our senses don’t stop working while we sleep.
    B. That people are more influenced by smell than by sound.
    C. That people may be woken up if they smell something bad.
    D. That our breathing rate is controlled by the brain.
    10. What does the underlined word “repulsive” in paragraph 5 probably mean?
    A. Strong. B. Unpleasant. C. Unfamiliar. D. Sweet.
    11. What does the passage mainly talk about?
    A. Learning in sleep. B. Benefits of a good sleep.
C Smells influence sleep. D. Music benefits sleep.
D 9. A 10. B 11. A

根据文章第一段“it turns out that a sleeping brain can be taught a thing or two, which is contrary to most scientists’ thought.(结果表明睡眠中的大脑可以学到一两件事,这与大多数科学家的想法相反)”可知,科学家们以前认为睡眠中的大脑学不了什么新东西。
根据文章第三段“Instead, the scientists taught sleeping volunteers to match smells and sounds.(相反,科学家们教睡着的志愿者们把气味和声音匹配起来)”和第四段“When we smell something nice, we automatically take deep breaths. When we smell something bad, we automatically take short breaths. Arzi and her coworkers based their experiment on these reactions. It is common sense that our senses don’t tum off while we are sleeping.(当我们闻到香味时,我们会不由自主地深呼吸。 故选A项。
根据划线词前文“Then the scientists gave the volunteers a whiff of something(然后,科学家们让志愿者们闻一闻某种东西)”及下文“like bad fish(像坏鱼一样)”和常识可知,坏鱼的气味是很难闻的。由此推知,划线词repulsive与unpleasant(令人不快的,不舒服的)意思接近。
根据文章第一段“Sleeping and learning go hand in hand, which studies have shown for years.(多年来的研究表明,睡眠和学习是密切相关的)”可知,这篇文章主要讨论了人们在睡眠中学习这一话题。故选A项。
    D
Excessive (过度的) smartphone use is a distinctly 21st century issue, but that doesn’t make it any less problematic. Countless people spend their days endlessly scrolling from one social media feed or app to the next. Many argue there’s an easy solution: place it in silent mode (模式).
Now, however, researchers from Penn State find that this approach can actually backfire for certain people. Study authors report people checked their phones more often when their devices were in silent mode. Notably, participants who scored high in “fear of missing out” and “need to belong” personality tests checked their phones the most after placing them on silent. In some cases, these individuals stayed on their phones for longer as well.
This work is based on data collected from the screen time monitoring tool of 138 iPhone users. Researchers focused on how two distinct psychological traits may influence how people act in response to placing their phones on either silence or vibrate. More specifically, study authors analyzed people who tend to be especially preoccupied (专注) with gathering information from others(fear of missing out, or FOMO), and people with a strong desire to maintain interpersonal relationships(need to belong).
Incredibly, in comparison to audio-alert or vibrate modes, each participant checked their phones more often when it was in silent mode. When the phone’s sound and vibration was on, the groups checked their devices 52.9 times daily on average. When their phones were silent, that average rate nearly doubled to 98.2 times a day. Volunteers identified as having high levels of FOMO checked their phones roughly 50 times daily when their device was on vibrate, while in silent mode, they checked their phones about 120 times daily, and they also tended to keep scrolling significantly longer if their phones were in silent mode.
Participants with high levels of the need-to-belong trait actually didn’t check their phones more in silent mode, however, they did stay on their phones longer if the devices were in either silent or vibration-only mode.
At the end of the day, smartphone use habits come down to the individual. Researchers conclude the first step toward developing healthier tech habits for everyone is understanding that different people react to apps, notifications, and various tech features differently.
    12. What can we know about excessive smartphone use?
    A. It is easy to get rid of. B. It has existed for centuries.
    C. It is a serious problem. D. It is no longer considered a problem.
    13. What does the underlined word “backfire” probably mean?
    A. Hardly have any effect. B. Have the opposite effect.
    C. Bring certain benefits. D. Cause some trouble.
    14. What can be inferred about the research?
    A. It may have limitations.
    B. Its researchers collected the data themselves.
    C. It focused on the participants’ psychological traits.
    D. It found silent mode affected participants’ interpersonal relationships.
    15. What can we say about people with high levels of FOMO when their phones were in silent mode?
    A. They checked their phones almost as often as usual.
    B. They showed healthier tech habits than people with the need-to-belong trait did.
    C. They stayed on their phones longer than people with the need-to-belong trait.
    D. They reacted differently from people with the need-to-belong trait.
C 13. B 14. A 15. D
根据第一段“Excessive (过度的) smartphone use is a distinctly 21st century issue, but that doesn’t make it any less problematic.
根据第一段最后一句“Many argue there’s an easy solution: place it in silent mode (模式). (许多人认为有一个简单的解决办法:把手机调到静音模式)”可知,有人建议手机调成静音,便可以解决过度使用手机的现象;根据划线词所在句以及下文“Now, however, researchers from Penn State find that this approach can actually backfire for certain people. Study authors report people checked their phones more often when their devices were in silent mode. 研究报告的作者称,当手机处于静音模式时,人们查看手机的频率更高)”,以及本段最后一句“In some cases, these individuals stayed on their phones for longer as well. 故backfire与B项“Have the opposite effect.(有相反的效果)”意思相近。
根据第三段“This work is based on data collected from the screen time monitoring tool of 138 iPhone users. Researchers focused on how two distinct psychological traits may influence how people act in response to placing their phones on either silence or vibrate. More specifically, study authors analyzed people who tend to be especially preoccupied (专注) with gathering information from others (fear of missing out, or FOMO), and people with a strong desire to maintain interpersonal relationships (need to belong).(这项研究基于从138名iPhone用户屏幕时间监控工具中收集的数据。 故选A项。
根据第四段最后一句“Volunteers identified as having high levels of FOMO checked their phones roughly 50 times daily when their device was on vibrate, while in silent mode, they checked their phones about 120 times daily, and they also tended to keep scrolling significantly longer if their phones were in silent mode. (被认为有高度FOMO的志愿者在手机处于振动模式时,每天查看手机约50次,而在静音模式下,他们每天查看手机约120次,而且在手机处于静音模式时,他们滚动手机的时间也明显更长)”及第五段“Participants with high levels of the need-to-belong trait actually didn’t check their phones more in silent mode;however, they did stay on their phones longer if the devices were in either silent or vibration-only mode.

根据上文“A casual carpool is an interesting concept that has arisen due to the large number of drivers who must commute to distances far from home on a regular basis. Highways are often set up with carpool lanes, which can be used by commuters.(临时拼车是一个有趣的概念,它产生的原因是大量的司机必须定期往返于离家很远的地方。
根据上文“People often set up Internet sites in order to quickly find a ride to the city they need without any money. Those looking for a ride merely scan the Internet site for their area, and might communicate with a driver the night before. Usually the only thing they need to do is be at a designated location by a certain time.(人们经常建立网站,以便快速找到前往他们需要的城市的交通工具。
根据上文“A person can prearrange the casual carpool to be guaranteed a seat, or he or she may have to take his chances by showing up at a casual carpool site.
根据上文“The casual carpool is often regarded as a perfectly safe mode of transportation.(临时拼车通常被认为是一种非常安全的交通方式)”以及后文“First, you don't know your driver and his/her driving abilities. Besides, you could potentially meet a predator.(首先,你不知道你的司机和他/她的驾驶能力。
根据后文“If you're traveling in a car with three people, and one person is taller than you, offer them the front seat. Don't chat about controversial subjects or criticize drivers, and also don't turn on the radio without asking permission.(如果你的车里有三个人,其中一个比你高,让他们坐在前座。

    50. gathering
    【49题详解】
    考查被动语态。句意:这部56集电视剧会在中国西南部云南省拍摄大概6个月,聚集了很多年轻的演员,例如:杨祐宁,白澍,张天阳。film这里是作动词意义“拍摄电影”,跟主语“TV series”(电视剧)是被动关系;再因为这句话中没有谓语动词,所以这里需要使用谓语动词,所以用被动语态;再根据文章使用的是一般过去时的被动语态,故填was filmed。
    【50题详解】
    考查非谓语动词。句意:这部56集电视剧会在中国西南部的云南省拍摄大概6个月,聚集了很多年轻的演员,例如:杨祐宁,白澍,张天阳。前半句话已经有了谓语动词,是一句完整的话,所以这里不能使用谓语动词,要考虑非谓语动词形式。gather“聚集”的逻辑主语是后面的人,“人和聚集”的关系是主动的,所以选择现在分词形式表示主动意义,故填gathering。

    注意:1. 每处错误及其修改均仅限一词;
    2. 只允许修改10处,多者(从第11处起)不计分。

    【答案】1.what→which
    2.to→on/upon
    3.reason→reasons
    4.many→much
    5.tiring→tired
    6.made→make
    7.usefully→useful

    9.do→doing
    10.在distant前加at
    【解析】
    【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章针对近视变得普遍的现象背后的原因进行了分析,并提出了如何保护视力的建议。
    【详解】1.考查定语从句。句意:许多学生变得近视,这无疑给我们带来了很大的困难,对我们的学习产生了不良影响。在非限制性定语从句中缺少主语,且修饰主句,所以应用关系代词which。故将what改为which。
    2.考查介词。句意:许多学生变得近视,这无疑给我们带来了很大的困难,对我们的学习产生了不良影响。have effects on/upon意为“对……产生影响”,为固定搭配,所以应用介词on或upon。故将to改为on/upon。
    3.考查名词复数。句意:原因不难找到。根据First,Second等可知,原因不止一个,所以reason应用复数形式。故将reason改为reasons。
    4.考查限定词。句意:首先,我们经常花太多的时间读书、看电视或玩电脑游戏,使我们的眼睛太累。time意为“时间”,为不可数名词,所以限定词应用much。故将many改为much。
根据“we often spend too much time reading books, watching TV or playing computer games”可知,此处是指使眼睛很累,所以应用形容词tired表示“疲劳的”。
根据“there are some bad reading habits”可知,此处描述客观事实,所以应用一般现在时,主语that指代reading habits,谓语动词用原形。故将made改为make。
故去掉them。
