Just as the shiny brochure promised, from the moment I set foot on the Harvard campuslast fall, I was exposed to an exciting andenlightening new world.
I was born and raised 1, 500 miles away, in a small apartment in Jackson, Mississippi. I am the only child, so my mother overpowered me with her love. For someone who sees so much beauty in the world, she worked awfullyhard to protect me from it. Television, rap music, and even basketball with the kids on the block was beyond consideration. It left me a bit bitter as a teenager, but I grew to appreciate her enormous sacrifices(牺牲) — walking me to the library every afternoon, laboring at multiple jobs to keep food on the table, and telling me stories late into the night.
When I announced the summer before my senior year of high school that I had decided to apply to Harvard, I noticed her hesitant look before a warm smile enveloped her face. I pretended not to see, but I was never able to forget it. I tried to explain my reasons for wanting to leave-to prove I was smart enough, fear of taking the path of least resistance, the classic teenage feeling of being trapped — but the words just made me sound shallow and ungrateful.
Nevertheless, I began to work on the college applications-an early one for Harvard and roughly a dozen others standing by. I knew the chance of getting into Harvard was not in my favor. To my joy, I was informed of my acceptance into Harvard three days before my birthday. That night, after all of the celebratory texts and hugs, I sat in my room and began to cry uncontrollably.
Over the course of this year, I have changed in ways I never anticipated. I think I know now why my mother let me go. Harvard has forced me to grow and take a fair look at the world, and at myself. Needless to say, I would not trade the experience for anything.

A. It deserved a big celebration. B. It served as a late birthday present.
C. It was beyond his expectations. D. It was a favor he owed his mother.
7. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Lifelong Learning in Harvard
B. Reflections on the Road to Harvard
C. What Harvard Means to My Mother and Me
D. How Harvard Shapes My Teenage Years
D 5. A 6. C 7. B
根据第二段画线词后“For someone who sees so much beauty in the world, she worked awfully hard to protect me from it. Television, rap music, and even basketball with the kids on the block was beyond consideration.(作为一个能看到世界上这么多美好事物的人,她却非常努力地保护我不受它的伤害。
根据第三段中“When I announced the summer before my senior year of high school that I had decided to apply to Harvard, I noticed her hesitant look before a warm smile enveloped her face.(在我升入高三的那个夏天,我告诉母亲我决定申请去哈佛念书,我察觉到母亲脸上那一丝犹豫,尽管那很快就被温暖的笑容所掩盖)”可知,母亲对作者的决定的第一反应是担心。故选A。

Nearly 10 million people worldwide live with Parkinson’s disease. While Parkinson’s is incurable, some of its worst symptoms can be relieved and controlled using medications. A major problem of getting effective treatment at the right time is identifying the disease soon enough, before patients experience the symptoms brought on by irreversible(不可逆转的)neuron loss.
But scientists might have just the thing to change the situation. And it involves a nose. In a study published in the journal ACS Omega, researchers from China’s Zhejiang University created an “e-nose, ”a portable device that can detect body smells specific to Parkinson’s patients.
It may come as a surprise to learn Parkinson’s patients have their own smells. But after a retired nurse in Scotland made headlines in 2015 for a heightened sense of smell that led to her own husband’s Parkinson’s diagnosis, scientists have been trying hard to create a device that could smell the disease before physical symptoms start to show.
Over the years, scientists have found people with Parkinson’s tend to produce more sebum (皮脂)than the average person. This sebum mixes with other overproduced substances to produce certain, unique smells.
To track down these smells, the Zhejiang University researchers swabbed(用拭子擦拭)the upper backs of 31 Parkinson’s patients and 32 healthy volunteers. Using machine-learning software, they were able to identify three smell compounds that healthy volunteers lacked. The researchers then tested the e-nose on sebum taken from 12 Parkinson’s patients and 12 healthy people. The device was found to be about 71 percent accurate in distinguishing healthy sebum from Parkinson’s sebum.
These are encouraging findings, but before the e-nose is ready for clinical use, the team needs to test it on many more people to improve the accuracy of the models. They will also need to test whether factors like race affect the e-nose’s performance in any way. But for now, as the number of people living with Parkinson’s in the U. S. is expected to rise to 1.2 million by 2030, a nose might be the best option to detect this disease.
8. What makes it difficult for Parkinson’s patients to get effective treatment?
A. Its medications are in short supply.
B. It involves irreversible neuron loss.
C. Its early signs are not easy to notice.
D. It’s not a curable disease medically.
9. What did the Scottish nurse find?
A. Her husband’s body gave off a strange smell.
B. Her husband had a heightened sense of smell.
C. A smell caused her husband to suffer from a disease.
D. A smell could relieve her husband’s Parkinson’s symptoms.
10. What will the researchers do concerning their invention?
A. Put it into clinical use.
B. Conduct a broader test.
C. Create more lab models.
D. Expand its market outside the U. S.
11. What is the best title for the text?
A. This e-nose can smell Parkinson’s
B. Parkinson’s patients produce more sebum
C. People living with Parkinson’s are on the rise
D. Researchers have found treatment for Parkinson’s
【答案】8 C 9. A 10. B 11. A
根据文章第一段“A major problem of getting effective treatment at the right time is identifying the disease soon enough, before patients experience the symptoms brought on by irreversible(不可逆转的)neuron loss.(在正确的时间获得有效治疗的一个主要问题是,在患者经历不可逆的神经元损失带来的症状之前,尽快确定疾病。)”
根据文章第三段“But after a retired nurse in Scotland made headlines in 2015 for a heightened sense of smell that led to her own husband’s Parkinson’s diagnosis(但2015年,苏格兰一名退休护士因为她敏锐的嗅觉帮助其丈夫被诊断出帕金森病而上了头条。)” 故选A项。
根据文章最后一段“These are encouraging findings, but before the e-nose is ready for clinical use, the team needs to test it on many more people to improve the accuracy of the models. They will also need to test whether factors like race affect the e-nose’s performance in any way.(这些都是令人鼓舞的发现,但在电子鼻投入临床使用之前,研究小组还需要在更多的人身上进行测试,以提高模型的准确性。
文章第一段主要讲的是电子鼻出现的背景——帕金森病人在得到正确救治之前很难发现其症状,第二、三、四和五段主要围绕着电子鼻的研发,测试及功效展开,最后一段“These are encouraging findings, but before the e-nose is ready for clinical use, the team needs to test it on many more people to improve the accuracy of the models. They will also need to test whether factors like race affect the e-nose’s performance in any way. But for now, as the number of people living with Parkinson’s in the U. S. is expected to rise to 1. 2 million by 2030, a nose might be the best option to detect this disease.(这些都是令人鼓舞的发现,但在电子鼻投入临床使用之前,研究小组还需要在更多的人身上进行测试,以提高模型的准确性。 This e-nose can smell Parkinson’s作为文章的标题最为合适。故选A项。
D
Soot (煤灰) pollution is speeding up climate-driven melting in Antarctica, a new study suggests, raising questions about how to protect the delicate continent from the increasing number of humans who want to visit.
“It really makes us question, is our presence really needed?” says Alia Khan, one of the authors of the new study. “We have quite a large black carbon footprint in Antarctica, which is enhancing snow and ice melt.”
Black carbon is the leftover thing from burning plants or fossil fuels. Soot in Antarctica comes primarily from waste gases of cruise ships (游轮), vehicles, airplanes and electrical generators, although some pollution travels on the wind from other parts of the globe. The dark particles (微粒) coat white snow and absorb heat from the sun the way a black T-shirt does on a warm day. The blanket of dark bits speeds up melting that was already happening more quickly because of global warming. When snow and ice are uncovered, they reflect an enormous amount of sunlight before it can turn into heat.
“These are the mirrors on our planet,” says Sonia Nagorski, a scientist at the University of Alaska Southeast. “When those mirrors are covered in a film of dark bits, they are less reflective. That means more heat is trapped on Earth, speeding up melting and contributing to global warming.”
As a scientist who personally visits Antarctica every year, Khan says she is troubled by her own research results. On the one hand, she goes to Antarctica to collect crucial data about how quickly the snow and ice there are disappearing. “But then when we come to conclusions like this it really does make us think twice about how frequently we need to visit the continent,” she says, “and what kind of regulations should be placed on tourism as well.” That could mean requiring that cruise ships and vehicles be electric, for example, or limiting the number of visitors each year.
12. What are the feelings expressed in Khan’s words in paragraph 2?
A. Doubt and concern.
B. Confidence and courage.
C. Anger and disappointment.
D. Optimism and certainty.
13. Which of the following is a major source of soot in Antarctica?
A. Burnt plants.
B. Tourist vehicles.
C. Black carbon elsewhere.
D. Fossil fuels underneath Antarctica.
14. What does Nagorski say about soot?
A. It causes Antarctic surface temperature to rise.
B. It is increasing in amount because of wind.
C. It reflects a large volume of sunlight.
D. It is like a big mirror on Earth.
15. What might Khan do in the future?
A. Help design scientific research regulations.
B. Use electric cars for her daily transportation.
C. Collect more data about Antarctica.
D. Reduce her visits to Antarctica.
A 13. B 14. A 15. D
根据文章第二段“It really makes us question, is our presence really needed?(这真的让我们产生怀疑,我们的到访真的有必要吗?)”这一反问句可推测出,Khan对于去南极访问这一事实表示怀疑的态度;由后文“We have quite a large black carbon footprint in Antarctica, which is enhancing snow and ice melt.(我们在南极洲有相当大的黑碳足迹,这促进了冰雪融化。)” 故选A。
根据文章第三段“Soot in Antarctica comes primarily from waste gases of cruise ship, vehicles, airplanes and electrical generators, although some pollution travels on the wind from other parts of the globe.(尽管一些污染是通过风从地球其他地区传播过来的,但是南极洲的煤灰主要来自游轮、车辆、飞机和发电机的废气。)”
根据文章第三段“When snow and ice are uncovered, they reflect an enormous amount of sunlight before it can turn into heat.(当雪和冰未被覆盖时,它们会在阳光转化成热量之前反射其中的大部分。)”和第四段“These are the mirrors on our planet, says Sonia Nagorski, a scientist at the University of Alaska Southeast.(“这些是我们星球上的镜子,”阿拉斯加东南大学的科学家索尼娅·纳戈尔斯基说。)”可知,这些镜子指的就是南极洲表面的冰雪;由后文“When those mirrors are covered in a film of dark bits, they are less reflective. That means more heat is trapped on Earth, speeding up melting and contributing to global warming.(当这些镜子被一层黑色的碎片覆盖时,它们的反射率就会降低。 故选A。
根据文章最后一段“‘But then when we come to conclusions like this it really does make us think twice about how frequently we need to visit the continent,’ she says, ‘and what kind of regulations should be placed on tourism as well.’ That could mean requiring that cruise ships and vehicles be electric, for example, or limiting the number of visitors each year.(她说:“但当我们得出这样的结论时,这真的会使我们再三考虑我们需要多久访问一次南极大陆,以及应该对旅游业制定什么样的规则。”

分析句子结构可知,空格后是一个非限制性定语从句,修饰“the national flag being raised as the sun comes up”这一动作,关系词将其代入定语从句中作主语,应用关系代词which来引导。故填which。
故填has been watched。
故填an。
故填to。
分析句子结构可知,空格前有固定短语a strong sense of“一种强烈的感觉”,of是介词,所以空格处应用名词形式security,a strong sense of security意为“强烈的安全感”。
根据句意和分析句子结构可知,空格处所在是从句,后面的“they always love the country sincerely and continue to pursue lofty values and ideals.” 故填although或though或while。

On the first day of school, Tina’ s teacher told the class, “Everyone of you will have a turn to be the Terrific (极好的) Kid of the Day!”
All year, Terrific Kids celebrated their special days in special ways, but Tina hoped her turn would never come.
When Ben was the Terrific Kid, his aunt Sarah taught the class how to draw funny cartoon faces. Tina didn’t have aunts. When Ken was the Terrific Kid, his twin baby sisters came to school. Tina didn’t have sisters or brothers. When Curtis’s turn arrived, his family came to school. Curtis’s mom baked cakes. Curtis’s father was a gardener and gave every child a plant. Curtis’s grandmother taught the class a song. Tina didn’t have a dad or grandmother.
After school that day Tina walked to the library for Story Hour. Mrs. Kaplan, the children’s librarian, greeted Tina with a bright smile. “Today’s story is about your favorite animal, Tina!”
A dog story! Tina loved dogs, but wasn’t allowed to have pets.
“Will you work the puppet (手偶) while I read the story?” Mrs. Kaplan asked Tina.
The little black and white dog puppet felt soft. Tina liked it so much. So when Mrs. Kaplan read Tina’s favorite dog story, Tina moved the dog puppet alongside.
After Story Hour, Tina waited until 7: 00 for her mom to pick her up. That night, Tina kept thinking about being a Terrific Kid. “I hope my turn never comes,” Tina thought.
Sure enough, Tina’s turn came. When she told Mrs. Kaplan that the next day was her turn to be the Terrific Kid, she had tears in her eyes. When Tina’s mom arrived, Mrs. Kaplan asked her into her office to chat while Tina waited.
On the way home, Tina and her mom stopped at Tico Tony’s for hot dogs. Tico Tony noticed Tina’s sad face. “Hey, Tina! What’s up?” Tico Tony listened while Tina told him about her Terrific Kid day. “We think you’re a Terrific Kid.” He smiled and, winked (眨眼示意) knowingly at her mother.
That night, Tina’s mom stayed up late baking cookies.
Then, the day arrived. Tina walked slowly to school with her mom. Her Terrific Kid day wouldn’t be terrific-just cookies.

Para2 “We came to honor our friend on her special day,” Mrs. Kaplan said. Tina helped Tico Tony give out delicious hot dogs. Mrs. Kaplan read Tina’s favorite dog story while Tina moved the dog puppet. After the story, Mrs. Kaplan gave Tina the puppet to keep! Tina’s mom’s cookies were a hit. “Good cookies and hot dogs!” Curtis said. “You have a great family of friends,” Ken said. “The dog story is cool!” said Ben. Tina couldn’t stop smiling. Her teacher stood in front of the room. “I’m so lucky to have a class full of Terrific Kids! Always keep celebrating yourselves and each other!”
