It is a trend in China to buy things looking nice, especially when people decide to buy something as a gift for their friends. Doing so has caused a rapid development in packaging industry, but also caused a huge waste in our national resources.
A good example is to buy a bag of Chinese tea. The tea itself may cost more than 500 CNY but it includes nearly 200 CNY for the package. Does it mean high quality when you buy goods in an attractive case? The answer is “perhaps”. “Perhaps” here means 50% of a chance is to buy really good and the other 50% of the chance is to buy something crap or fake. One of my friends bought a bottle of Maotai for 1.800 CNY, and he was absolutely embarrassed to find there to be water in it in front of his invited guests. It is crazy
Things have become so expensive and so well packed that many companies produce fake products, playing the same trick. We should criticize the producers that produce crap and fake goods, but should those companies that charge their customers a large amount of money just for the package be praised? No. As customers, we need to think about the question: why do we have to chase the superficial (表面的) things when we buy things? Why do we have to buy friends expensive gifts? Are a notebook computer, an iPhone and electronics really something we have to buy as gifts to someone? Can we not change our ways to show our love to our beloved ones just with an item suitable instead of telling them how much it is worth? If we make statistics in our population, it is easy to find out that 99% of the people would express their hatred (憎恨) for bribery (行贿) and corrupted (贪污的) officials. However, how many of us have ever asked ourselves a question like “What have I done in the past year that has promoted corruptions in our country”?
24. When a man intends to buy a present for his friend, he tends to ______.
A. choose something with good quality
B. buy something to his friend’s taste
C. choose something with attractive package
D. buy something economical
25. Through the second example in Paragraph 2, the author wants to indicate that ______.
A. buying things looking nice is a good choice
B. things with good package don’t necessarily mean good quality
C. some companies charge customers too much money for the package
D. his friends are angry to the fake Maotai
26. Which of the following statements is the author probably in favor of?
A. A great number of people have done many things related to corruption.
B. To choose presents we should pay attention to superficial things.
C. There is a minority of people hating bribery.
D. Many companies play different tricks to promote the sales of their fake products.
27. Which may be the best choice when we buy something for our beloved ones?
A. An electronic product.
B. Something best suitable to show our love.
C. An expensive and good-looking gift.
D. A bag of Chinese tea.

I have two kids. a boy and a girl. I don’t worry about my girl. I’m sure she’ll be well trained in mixed martial(勇敢的) arts. I worry about my son. I’m pretty sure he’s going to be feminine (女性化的). Sorry to say that, but let’s face it. No dad wants his son to go feminine.
At the rate we’re moving in a couple of years you won’t be able to tell the difference between boys and girls. Sound extreme? Think about this. In every movie where advanced time—traveling beings come to our planet there’s one constant. You can’t tell the male aliens from the female aliens!
But that’s the future. Kids today are soft and fat. People ask why. Is it junk food? No. junk food has been around for fifty years. Is it video games? No. Video games have been around for thirty years. None of the kids playing them back in the day were terribly obese. We’re all scratching our heads trying to figure out what we’ve introduced to society to ruin our kids. But it’s not anything we’ve added that has ruined our kids. It’s stuff we’ve gotten rid of.
Take the gym rope for example. Remember that thing that stretched from the floor to the ceiling in your gym class that you could never climb? Most of the kids couldn’t make it to the top. But that wasn’t the point, the point was you had to try while some middle-aged guys who couldn’t make it up a flight of stairs shouted at you. We should have put our son on that rope, and given him a head start. But we didn’t want to shame the boy, so we took it down.
Taking down the rope would be a good idea if there were no ropes in life. But they’re everywhere. You just can’t see them. They’re in every goal unrealized and expectation not met. The point everyone missed about the rope is that you weren’t supposed to make it to the top. It was there to create a fire that burned in the oversized belly of every kid.
28. What is the example of aliens used to show?
A. Girls are growing into boys. B. Boys are going feminine.
C. There are really time-traveling beings. D. Alien movies are popular with children.
29. What caused kids today to be soft and fat?
A. Junk food. B. Video games.
C. Stuff introduced to society. D. Things removed from society.
30. How does the author find teenagers today?
A. They have too much dignity. (尊严)
B. They are overprotected.
C. They are less independent.
D. They are thought too highly of.
31. What does the rope probably symbolize?
A. Goals. B. Expectations. C. Competition. D. Assistance.
D
Harvard scientists have created a “bionic (仿生的) leaf” that turns solar energy into liquid fuel. The work is the fruit of cooperation between Professor Pamela Silver at Harvard Medical School and Professor Daniel Nocera in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences.
The pair, who began cooperating two years ago, share an interest in developing energy sources that might someday have practical application in remote areas in the developing world. Silver named the system “bionic” because it joins a biological system to a clever piece of inorganic chemistry previously developed by Nocera: that invention, widely known as the artificial leaf, turns solar energy into hydrogen fuel.
Nocera’s artificial leaf, which serves as fuel source in the bionic leaf, works by sandwiching a photovoltaic cells (光电池) between two metal oxide catalysts (氧化催化物). When put in water at room temperature and normal atmospheric pressure, the artificial leaf copies photosynthesis (光合作用). Nocera has been perfecting the artificial leaf since he first demonstrated it in 2011: today, it is far more efficient than a field-grown plant, which assimilates only I percent of sunlight’s energy.
The hydrogen is a fuel with a broad use, Nocera reports, and could easily become the basis of a fuel cell, but it has not been widely adopted, partly because it is a gas. By contrast, liquid fuels are much easier to handle and store.
“Modern society”, says Nocera, “has created an entire manufacturing economy based not only on burning fossil fuels, but on using petroleum to make things such as rubber and plastics.” “A lot of chemistry was done which set that up,” he notes. The present system makes sense now because petroleum costs so little; a sustainable system like the artificial or bionic leaf can’t compete with that. But when oil becomes less and less, he says, “we might want to redo everything in terms of manufacturing. In the future, you might want to make everything renewable. Then, you can trust bionic leaf.”
32. What can be implied from the second paragraph?
A. The pair invented the artificial leaf.
B. Bionic leaf got its name from its invention developed by Nocera.
C. The pair are concerned about energy sources in developing world.
D. Both bionic leaf and artificial leaf can change solar energy into liquid fuel.
33. The underlined “assimilate” in paragraph 3 most nearly means
A. records B. absorbs C. attracts D. equals
34. Why does Nocera have faith in bionic leaf?
A. Fossil fuels now are exhausted and cannot be employed.
B. Bionic leaf guarantees a sustainable energy supply compared with oil.
C. Liquid fuels created by bionic leaf are much easier to handle and store.
D. Bionic leaf is far more efficient than a field-grown plant and fossil fuels.
35. What does the author mainly talk about concerning the bionic leaf?
A. Its scientific efficiency.
B. Its current commercial uses.
C. Its development and significance.
D. Its difference from the artificial leaf.

Building Trust in a Relationship Again
Trust is a learned behavior that we gain from past experiences. 36 Trust is a risk. But you can’t be successful when there’s a lack of trust in a relationship that results from an action where the wrongdoer takes no responsibility to fix the mistake.
Unfortunately, we’ve all been victims of betrayal. Whether we’ve been stolen from, lied to, misled, or cheated on, there are different levels of losing trust. Sometimes people simply can’t trust anymore.
37 It’s understandable, but if you’re willing to build trust in a relationship again, we have some steps you can take to get you there.
38 Having confidence in yourself will help you make better choices because you can see what the best outcome would be for your well-being.
39 If you’ve been betrayed, you are the victim of your circumstance. But there’s a difference between being a victim and living with a “victim mentality”. At some point in all of our lives, we’ll have our trust tested or violated.
You didn’t lose “everything”. Once trust is lost, what is left? Instead of looking at the situation from this hopeless angle, look at everything you still have and be thankful for all of the good in your life. 40 Instead, it’s a healthy way to work through the experience to allow room for positive growth and forgiveness.
A. Learn to really trust yourself.
B. It is putting confidence in someone.
C. Stop regarding yourself as the victim.
D. Remember that you can expect the best in return.
E. They’ve been too badly hurt and they can’t bear to let it happen again.
F. This knowledge carries over in their attitude toward their future relationships.
G. Seeing the positive side of things doesn’t mean you’re ignoring what happened.

Vivian was sent to the best university abroad. Although she had everything, the only thing she never owned was respect of other people.
When Vivian came back after her graduation and her father asked her to join his company as an accountant, she was naturally not happy with that. She wanted to work in a higher post but her father wanted her to start as an ordinary girl.
“Dad, studied in the most outstanding university abroad and got a better education than any of the employees who work under you. Still, you want me to work under them?” said Vivian unhappily.
Vivian’s father looked at her with a smile on his face. Vivian was annoyed by her father’s re-action but she agreed to work as an accountant in the end.
After some months, there was an emergency situation in the company. One of the restaurants was short of employees because of a sudden resignation, so they were short on people to do other chores around the place and cook food fast. Vivian’s father asked her to help that restaurant with him and the other employees.
When she entered the restaurant, she was hit by the air of tension around the employees. Everybody was busy doing something or other and there was a mess around the restaurant. When she went in the back of the kitchen, she saw a tower of unwashed dishes.
Her father neared her in a hurry and asked her, “Vivian, thank goodness, you are here. Darling, will you please help us and do the dishes? He patted her on he shoulder and do the dishes. She looked at the dirty plates and spoons that were piled up before her.

七.读后续写
"I didn't study my whole life and come first in everything to do this," Vivian thought. She was down in the dumps and left the kitchen. But after a while she heard her father saying, "Vivian, sweetheart, you didn't do the dishes? Go on, do it." But Vivian ignored him deliberately. Her father looked at her in confusion but then he realized why his daughter was behaving like this. Obviously he was aware of his daughter's thinking. So, he started making his way towards the back of the kitchen
Vivian's father picked up the gloves, put them on and started doing the dishes himself. "Dad, what are you doing? You are not an ordinary employee!" said Vivian. "Darling, I have always been an ordinary man. I worked hard for you just as these employees' parents must have done," her father replied. Vivian was overcome with regret and took the gloves off his hands immediately. "You are not seriously thinking that I am going to let you do these without offering my help?" Vivian said and then they both laughed.
