Jeremy and his wife Jennifer had recently moved to South Texas because of their love for nature. At the moment, they were living in a trailer(拖车) for the house was still under repair.
On a steamy Sunday morning in May, the couple were tidying their yard. At around 10:30 a. m. , Jeremy began mowing the lawn while Jennifer worked on the garden. She had just reached down to grab a weed when she saw it : a western diamondback rattlesnake, right next to her hand. Jennifer leaped up as the snake, a yard long, rose into striking position, its dusty triangular head tensed and its tail rattling. “Snake!” yelled Jennifer as she backed away.
When Jeremy heard her cry, he figured she had run into one of the harmless rat snakes that often showed up on their land. He grabbed a shovel to shoo(用嘘声驱赶) the creature away and jogged around the house to the garden. Then he heard the rattling. His wife was cornered between some shrubs and the house, the snake directly in her path.
Jeremy first tried to scoop up the rattler using the shovel, without success. Then he did what was necessary: He raised the garden tool and brought the edge down hard through the snake’s body, an inch and a half below the head to cut off its head. Then Jennifer went into the house, her heart hammering, while Jeremy decided to move the dead reptile. He bent down to pick up a stick lying next to the snake’s head so that he could take it away. But before his hand even touched the ground, the snake attacked. The snake injected venom(毒液) into his hand.
“It bit me!” he yelled in horror. The truth is, the back-from-the-dead bites aren’t uncommon. Hearing his yell,Jennifer ran back into the trailer to get the car keys and meanwhile called 911. Fortunately, they arrived at the nearest hospital in time and Jeremy received timely treatment.
    24. Why did the couple choose to live in a trailer?
    A. Because they loved nature.
    B. Because they moved to South Texas.
    C. Because their house was being repaired.
    D. Because it was convenient for them to travel.
    25. Which one is correct according to the context?

    B. Jennifer spotted the snake when she was weeding.
    C. The snake was so frightened that it attacked Jennifer.
    D. Jennifer thought the snake was not poisonous at first.
    26. What did they do with the snake?
    A. They drove it away using a stick.
    B. They left it as it was when seeing it.
    C. They called professionals to deal with it.
    D. Jeremy beat it dead with a garden tool.
    27. What is the author’s purpose in writing the test?
    A. To show the couple’s love of nature.
    B. To share a thrilling story with readers.
    C. To call on us to protect the environment.
    D. To introduce some ways to deal with snakes.

    C
Everything you know is in your brain. For what you don't, you can ask the web. However, as you can imagine, in the past there were no computers and no web at all. Think about people living 3, 500 years ago, in places where pyramids towered above them. The lack of explanations about how things worked inspired the ancients to make discoveries and feed their curiosity.
But do not think they knew nothing: in fact, we still wonder how the Egyptians could build the pyramids using their own, rather rudimentary equipment. They wrote down their knowledge on books(called papyrus scrolls)so that later people could benefit from their skills.
Living safer and healthier was a top priority for the ancients: when they hurt their heads in battles, they used to heal their wounds using the cures, some of which were recorded on a papyrus now known as the Edwin Smith Papyrus. Interestingly, this is the oldest written evidence of the word "brain" we have on Earth, and it dates back to 3, 500 years ago!
However, writing the word "brain" on a papyrus did not solve all the curiosities and questions about it. Around 2, 500 years ago, for example, ancient Greeks wondered whether mind and soul lay in the brain or in the heart.
2, 000 years ago, Roman physician Galen of Pergamon was sure he had solved the question: it was the brain, not the heart, that was the center of mental life. However, Galen had to convince the people around him that what he had discovered was true. It was not easy, mostly because people held their earlier beliefs. Every neuroscientist, just like Galen did, has to carefully observe reality, focus on something that is really interesting, think about how it can work, perform experiments, and discuss the data they get. This way, they can obtain convincing evidence to be shared with others.
28.What encouraged the ancients to make discoveries?
    A. The hope for keeping curiosity. B. The need for writing books.
    C. The search for explanations. D. The wish to work faster.
    29. Which word can best replace "rudimentary" underlined in paragraph 2?
    A. Complicated. B. Primitive. C. Electrical. D. Protective.
    30. What can be learned about the Edwin Smith Papyrus?
    A. It was probably a medical text. B. It was finished 2,500 years ago.
    C. It was considered useless at first. D. It was written by Galen of Pergamon.
    31. How did Galen convince people of his discovery?
    A. By finding evidence from papyrus scrolls.
    B. By asking many scientists to support him.
    C. By following strict scientific methods.
    D. By teaching people to do experiments.
C 29. B 30. A 31. C
The lack of explanations about how things worked inspired the ancients to make discoveries and feed their curiosity.
根据所在段"we still wonder how the Egyptians could build the pyramids using their own, rather rudimentary equipment. Think about people living 3,500 years ago,in places where pyr-amids towered above them, instead of the modern buildings you can see around you.
根据第三段中的"when they hurt their heads in battles, they used to heal their wounds using the cures they had discovered on their own, some of which were recorded on a papyrus now known as the Edwin Smith Papyrus.
Every neuroscientist, just like Galen did,has to carefully observe reality, focus on something that is really interesting, think about how it can work, perform experiments, and discuss the data they get. This way, they can obtain convincing evidence to be shared with others.

    D
By now, it is pretty well understood that we regularly pay for things in ways other than using money. Sometimes we pay sill with cash. But we also pay for things with data, and more often, with our time and attention. We effectively hand over access to our minds in exchange for something "fee", like email, streaming video or online shopping pages. As opposed to "paying" attention, we actually "spend attention", agreeing to the view ads in exchange for something we really want.
The centrality of that deal in our lives makes it unacceptable that there are companies who seize our time and attention for absolutely nothing in exchange, and indeed, without permission at all-otherwise known as "attention theft".
Attention theft happens anywhere you find your time and attention taken without permission, like the new, targeted advertising screens in hospital waiting rooms, the airlines that play full-volume advertising from a screen right in front of your face, or the advertising - screens in office elevators. These are just few examples in what is a growing category. Combined, they threaten to make us live life in a screen-lined cocoon(茧),shrunken and incapable of independent thought.
Then, what makes it "theft"?Advances in neuroscience over the last several decades make it clear that our brain's resources are unconsciously triggered(触发)by sound and movement;therefore the screens seize rare mental resources. Meanwhile, in the law, theft is typically defined as the taking control of a resource "under such circumstances as to acquire the major part of its economic value or benefit. " Given the established market value of time and attention, when taken without permission or compensation, it really is not much different from someone taking money out of your pocket. Thus, when the firms selling public-screen advertising to target audiences brag of rapid growth and billions in profit, those are actually earnings made by stealing from us.
    32. What phenomenon is described in Paragraph 1? ______
    A. Preference for cash. B. Consumption of attention.
    C. Payments in shopping. D. Addiction to mass media.
    33. How does the writer show the wide spread of "attention theft"? ______
    A. By making a definition. B. By analyzing causes.
    C. By giving examples. D. By predicting results.
    34. Why is "attention theft" considered as a theft? ______
    A. It brings a fortune to the thief.
    B. It lays heavy burden on the brain.
    C. It takes up mental resources secretly.
    D. It brings about economic loss constantly.
    35. What could be the best title for the text? ______
    A. The Crisis of Attention Theft
    B. The Price of Attention Theft
    C. Ads:Source or Theft of Information
    D. "Paying" Instead of "Spending" Attention
D 33. C 34. C 35. A
故选A.
Meeting new people is a great way to broaden your horizons, expand your social circle- or swap it for a new one. Most of us are looking to make regular friends and if possible, true, soul friends. 36
Identify opportunities. We let chances to make friends pass us by every day 37 Instead of forcing a little small talk with your kindly neighbors, ask them in for a cup of tea and get to know them... You'll be surprised by how many potential friends there already are in your orbit.
38 Joining a group, club or class is an effective way to meet people. Pursue a skill you are enthusiastic about, because then you will have a good time and feel more at ease striking up a conversation.
Allow yourself to be vulnerable(易受伤害的). 39 What if your overtures (主动表示) are rejected? A degree of vulnerability is needed in trying to strike up friendships. Put plainly, keeping yourself to yourself isn't going to help you. Letting others in on plans is simple ways to share, which will help build closeness and trust.
Use Technology widely. Social media can be hugely beneficial for making friends. Apps can be a good starting point, as can platforms. 40 . The more we rely on apps, the less practice we have with the kinds of conversations and experiences that really allow us to create close friendships.
    A. Follow your interests.
    B. Turn to community for help.
    C. Here are some ways to get out there.
    D. It can be scary trying to make friends.
    E. But they do not replace personal interactions.
    F. They're perfect ways of expanding your social circle.
    G. Have the courage to take small steps when opportunities arise.
    36-40 CGADE

41-45 ACDCB 46-50 DABDC 51-55 BADCB
从第二段“soon filled our cart with food”可知,作者他们去超市是为了买吃的。所以这里应该选择“pick up another week‘s of food”,表示买另一周的食物。

    第45题 B 从后文“prefer……the line……”

    第47题 A  从前文“the line at them was five deep”可知,收银台的队伍排得很长,因此作者没有足够的时间去排队。

look out/寻觅,pull out/退出,break out/打破,check out/结账离开。

根据后面的 so far 可知,此处要填 have collected。
句中有 than。
the way to do sth,"做某事的方式、方法"。

"Pick up the pace!" said Amy's husband. "But I can't!" Amy said, her heart beating quickly inside. "I can't go any faster! Her husband encouraged her. "Yes, you can! You're making progress every day. "
To help Amy stay healthy, her husband had been running with her for over two years. Several years ago, Amy could barely walk down the stairs of her apartment building due to fatness caused by eating disorders. She realized the problem after a failed job interview and began walking to improve her ability to move. At first, she could walk for only 15 minutes at a time. But she pushed herself every day, walking 5 minutes longer than she did the day before until she walked for an hour and eventually two. For three years, Amy kept her walking habit, slowly and painstakingly building her body shape. Then she changed her walking shoes to running shoes about two years ago and became an excellent runner.
In March 2001,an advertisement invited people to nominate(提名)an ordinary person who inspired them to bring the Olympic flame to Salt Lake City as torch bearers(火炬手)or support runners. (Support runners serve as "guardians of the flame" and run with torch bearers along the journey. )Amy's experiences touched her husband, so he nominated her to be a torch bearer. The possibility to be selected was low, but Amy wanted to try.
Running taught Amy the importance of training for a race. She pictured herself running a race and crossing the finish line. For months, she ran through her neighborhood carrying a broken-off broom handle, feeling the weight of the torch. She waved at her neighbors, pretending they were cheering crowds. She also printed a picture of a torch bearer wearing the white uniform, replaced the face with a picture of hers, and put it onto her refrigerator door.
Every day, Amy imagined herself as a torch bearer. She was training for a historic running event. On September 26th, while on her daily run through her neighborhood, an express package arrived.
    注意:
    1. 续写词数应为150左右;
    2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
    Paragraph 1:
Amy opened it and found a letter and a book on the Olympics.
    __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

    Paragraph 2:
"One of today's torch bearers can't run her part, " announced the relay organize.

    __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

    Paragraph1:
Amy opened it and found a letter and a book on the Olympics. The letter read "Congratulations! You've been selected as a support runner for the Olympic Torch Relay. " Although she wouldn't be wearing the white uniform, she wasn't disappointed. She completed the required physical examination, delivered the forms and waited. Months later, another package arrived. It contained her official blue support runner uniform along with instructions for her part of the relay. Then on a cold day, Amy and her husband stood outside the Torch Relay collection point.

    Paragraph 2:
"One of today's torch bearers can't run her part, " announced the relay organizer. Then he said, "One lucky support runner will become a torch bearer. Select a person now. " Luckily, Amy became the torch bearer. Holding it tight, she ran down the street filled with people waving flags. The Olympic theme song was broadcast. Amy smiled and waved to the crowds, knowing that she was carrying not only the torch, but also the Olympic spirit.

Although she wouldn't be wearing the white uniform, she wasn't disappointed.
Holding it tight, she ran down the street filled with people waving flags.

    Text 6
M: Linda, I’ve been talking to the other managers and we’d like to offer you a promotion to assistant manager. This job comes with more hours, more responsibility, and of course, a pay raise.

W: I’ve heard of that. Isn’t it a bit boring?
M: It’s not for everyone. My life is busy, so I just like to slow down sometimes. And I’ve got an idea for this weekend. You know that oak tree I planted? I’m going to film it. And make my own Slow TV!
W: I think what you need is to take a walk outside. Then you can admire all the trees you like!

    Text 8
M: Well, that’s it, seven appointments in Paris at the beginning of next week, and four in Frankfurt at the end of the week.
    W: It’s certainly a tight schedule.
M: Now it’s a question of getting there. I need a flight to Paris on Sunday evening and a hotel for three nights. I have to be in Milan by 11:00 on Thursday morning. And I’ll need a hotel for one night. Finally, I’ll head home on Friday.
    W: At what time?
M: My last appointment is at 3:00, so I should be free by 5:00 at the very latest. I think I could get to the airport by 6:00.
W: Don’t forget it’s Friday night. If Milan’s anything like London, everybody will be leaving for the weekend. It will be a rush hour and traffic might be moving very slowly.

    Text 9
M: Hey Michelle, jump in quick.
W: Oh, hi Tom. Are you going to the conference too? I was planning to pick up Mr. Campbell.
M: Yes. We need to pick him up at his hotel and then go to the conference.
W: Oh I see. So I heard you got married. Congratulations!
M: Thank you! We were going to get married next year, but then we decided to get married on holiday instead.
W: Wonderful! Jack and I were hoping to get married in Europe next year, but we had to put our wedding off. We just don’t have the money!
M:  I know what you mean. I think Shanghai is getting more and more expensive, don’t you?
W:  I sure do. Oh, there’s Mr. Campbell. Driver, can you stop here please?

    Text 10
M:  It feels like every time my mother and I start to have a conversation, it turns into an argument. We talk about something as simple as dinner plans and suddenly, she will push the conversation into World War III. She’ll talk about my lack of a bright future because I don’t plan to be a doctor. And much to her disappointment, I don’t want to do any job related to science, either. In fact, when I was pushed to say that I planned to major in English, she nearly had a heart attack.
“Why can’t you be like my co-worker’s son Andrew?” she complains all the time. Her co-worker’s son received a four-year scholarship and is now earning 70,000 dollars a year as an engineer. I don’t know what to answer except that I simply can’t be like Mr. Perfect as I’ve called the co-worker’s son. I’m the type of person who loves to help out in the community, write until the sun goes down, and most of all, wants to achieve a career because I love it, not because of fame or salary.
