In Montana (蒙大拿州), the USA, there is a TV program called “Frontier House”. Three families lived in the hills of Montana for five months. Each family was given their own land and they lived there from June to October. They followed the same way of life as their ancestors over a hundred years ago in the Wild West. Yue Opera(越剧)is also called Shaoxing Opera. It is one of the five operas in China. It has been listed into the first national non-material cultural heritage(非物质文化遗产)since 2006.Yue Opera appeared in Sheng County. Zhejiang Province in the Qing Dynasty and then it became famous in Shanghai in the 1920s.
Yue Opera is famous for singing, touching music and lively performances. The main subjects of Yue Opera are stories about wits and beauties(才子佳人). Main instruments are the erhu and some other traditional Chinese instruments.
First performed by male farmer artists in the countryside, Yue Opera was later developed into a popular performance in cities. I heard the sound of the boat workers telling people to hurry up and get on board. As always, I was running late and I wasn’t sure if I would get on the boat on time. Luckily, I was able to catch the boat and start my trip. I was going to work on a small island. It was just one of those days when things were not going right for me.
