    (2021·上海静安·九年级期末)The sixth sense

The "sixth sense" is often said to be a strong feeling that a person has about something or someone. Read about one mother's experience.
    I had a feeling ...
Kathy Sansano arrived home from work two months ago at 7:00 in the evening. "Usually, my husband is home before me, but when I got in, his briefcase was there, but he wasn't," recalls Sansano. She just thought that he want to the store for something. Sansano began preparing dinner, but couldn't shake the feeling that something was wrong. "I just started feeling very anxious and had to sit down. Five minutes later my husband phoned to say that our son had been injured in a football game at school."
Luckily, the boy only had a broken wrist, but Sansano still can't explain how she knew something was wrong. "It might have been 'mother's intuition (直觉)'" she laughs. "My son and I have always been very close."
Science points out five basic senses that humans use to experience the world. There is now evidence that human may also own a sixth sense-or an intuition about people or events. Recent studies suggest that insects and animals release odorless(meaning "without any smells") chemicals into the environment to send signal emotions such as fear or aggression (侵略). When another creature of the same kind senses the chemical, certain behavior is caused in that creature; for example, it will prepare to fight or to protect itself.
Scientists believe that humans long ago may have communicated using these kinds of chemical signals. "I walked into the room, and something just didn't seem right." It may be that the person is sensing chemical messages that have been produced by others. Kathy Sansano's husband may have left the house feeling afraid and worried about their son. When Kathy got home, she sensed his worry.

Electives(选修课) are always popular with students because they offer the chance to learn something exciting, and they’re a welcome break from regular courses like maths and physics. Here are just a few of the exciting electives lucky teenagers can take in some of China’s middle schools.
    Self-defense skills
    A school from Chongqing
The school offers a self-defense course — just for girls. Those who attend the lessons have the chance to study basic self-protection skills in a one-on-one practice. They learn how to get away when they need to and defend themselves against attacks. “I feel safer in myself now,” said Zhang Yi, 15, a girl student.
    Pottery
    A school from Tianjin
The famous pottery scene in a movie called Ghost is a lasting memory for many movie-goers. Young artists at the school love to get their hands dirty creating beautiful pieces. Students learn how to design and make various clay projects. At the end, they have the skills to make their own clay bowls, cups, vases and pots.
    Horse riding
    A school from Beijing
Equestrians(马术) can look pretty cool, can’t they? Teenagers at this school can now choose a course in riding skills. They’re taught to communicate with their horses and how to use reins. To ride a horse in the proper way, a student must hold the head forward and keep his back straight. Students come away from this elective not only knowing how to ride a horse gracefully, but also physically fitter!
    Couplets
    A school from Nanjing
How many of you can write a couplet? This old literary(文学的) form is slowly disappearing, but Chinese culture lovers at the school are trying to make it alive. For their elective, teenagers study old couplets and try to rhyme(押韵) their own lines. Many of this year’s students can’t wait for the Spring Festival, when they’ll be able to show off their new skills.

There are some easy things you can do to protect the environment and the earth. Choose ideas from the list or come up with few of your own.
    ·Plant flowers, grass or trees.
·Whenever you visit a park or a beach, take away what you bring there — keep rubbish in a bag until you can put it in a dustbin.
·Turn off the lights, TV sets when you leave the room. This saves a lot of electricity.
·Turn off the tap when you brush your teeth. You can save some water by not letting it run. Also, use a glass cup instead of a paper cup because this saves paper.
·Keep the doors and windows closed in winter to keep warm air in.
·Give your old books and magazines to a library instead of throwing them away.
·Give your old clothes to poor children you know instead of throwing them away.
    ·Use both sides of paper.
·Stop pouring dirty water into the rivers or lakes nearby.
·Encourage all your friends to do the same things you do to help protect the earth. You don’t have to wait until Earth Day to do these things. Make every day Earth Day. If everyone protects the environment, the world will become much more beautiful.

Instead of studying abroad during college, more and more Chinese teenagers have chosen to do so as early as in high school. Students from China make up about 42 percent of the international students at high schools in the US, according to the latest study by the Institute of International Education. So, what is the main attraction for Chinese high school students to study abroad? What is overseas life like? We interviewed several students. Have a look!
Pan. 15. Moreau Catholic High School in San Francisco, California, US
In the future, I want to go to college in the US. Studying in high school here will help me get used to college life in the future. Also, I want to improve my English. Studying here is not easy. Instead of exams like in China, we have more projects in class. For example, we have to make a PPT about a historical figure and then design a creative item for that person, such as a painting.
Zhao. 15. Unionville High School in Toronto, Canada
For me, experience matters. It’s good to have the experience of living in another country. Unlike other international students, my parents accompanied me, which makes my life here much easier.
In Canada, I have more time to develop my interests. I can choose classes I like. However, taking the entrance examinations to high school and college at home would be great. It’s a shame that I have no chance to do that.
Zheng. 14. Walsh Jesuit High School in Cleveland, Ohio, US
I want to try different cultures and education styles. Two years ago, visited some famous universities in Boston, such as Harvard and MIT. The academic atmosphere(学术氛围) deeply impressed me. Every student seems to spare no effort on academics. I saw students doing morning exercise everywhere and I watched a football game. I found that school life in the US was colourful. So I decided to study in the US.
19.How many international students in American high schools are from China?

Quite a few people believe that the phases of the moon(月相) affect the behavior of human and other creatures. That is known as the lunar(月亮) effect. The lunar effect has been around for many centuries. The power of the moon is often used to explain wide range of events, such as human insanity(精神错乱), and increases in violent crimes and traffic accidents.
According to some traditions, for example, before the coming of modern techniques, surgeons would refuse to operate on the full moon nights because of the in- creased risk of death of the patient through blood loss. The idea behind the lunar effect has even found its way into the news. For example, it has been said that the full moon may have influenced voters’ behavior in the 2000 U. S. presidential election.
Does the moon affect our behavior at all? Some people say it does. They say the moon causes the tides, so surely that the moon has an effect on people and we our- selves are full of water, too. But scientists point out that the moon only affects unrestrained(不受控制的) waters, such as oceans. The water in our bodies isn’t even comparable. And over fifty years of research has shown nothing to prove the existence of a causative link(因果联系) between the moon and areas such as mental illness birth rates, crime, or accidents.
There is an explanation for why people link the full moon to unusual human behavior. The reason is that people have selective memories. When something unusual happens and there is a full moon, people might notice the moon and think it is to be blamed.

The dentist agreed to see James immediately. “Open your mouth, “ he said, “and let me have a look.” James opened his mouth.
“Which tooth is giving you trouble?” the dentist asked next. James touched the tooth with his finger.

“That’s all right,” James said, “Just stop the pain.” The dentist gave James an injection(注射)and quickly pulled out the tooth. He dropped it into the garbage can. “Don’t throw it away,”James said, “Let me have it please.”

Whether from the novels, TV shows or movies, everyone knows Sherlock Holmes. His stories are among the most read material in the world, behind only the Bible(圣经)and the dictionary.
The famous detective stories were written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Though he studied medicine and managed to practise it, writing became his pleasure in life and made him famous all over the world. In addition to his gift in writing detective stories, he had a medical background that enabled him to be of service during wars and journeys to both Antarctica and Africa.
During his university years, Doyle found his studies dull but loved watching his unusual teachers. One of these was Dr. Joseph Bell, who liked to observe to find solutions to problems. While Bell could guess people’s jobs just by observing them carefully, he was also cold to his patients. And so Doyle’s famous Holmes was born-----a confident detective with a keen eye but an indifferent(冷漠的)attitude.
Doyle began to publish detective stories of Sherlock Holmes in The Strand magazine in 1891 and achieved great success. These exciting and enjoyable adventures attracted the British middle class who lined up to buy magazines and read them. Doyle, however, felt Holmes was blocking his desire to write historical novels and killed him off in 1893. Angry letters and protest failed to bring Holmes back until 8 years later.
Holmes continued being popular through new novels, BBC’s TV shows and the Robert Downey Jr. films. Some fans are even crazy about Sherlock Holmes. A group of fans called Sherlockians claim(宣称)that Sherlock Holmes was a real person and his stories are historical record. As they work to prove their claims and as books and films about Holmes continue to fill our homes, our favourite detective certainly lives on.

(2020·上海·九年级期末)Wassily Kandinsky was a Russian painter. He developed a way of painting called abstract art. This art uses colours, shapes and lines. He had many ideas about colour. He believed that colous communicated certain qualities and that the colours that surround us have a powerful influence on us. Most of us have a favourite colour and this favourite colour makes us feel good, too.
Kandinsky thought that yellow was a warm exciting colour that could make us feel happy. In comparison, blue was a peaceful color that could make a person feel more relaxed. The colour green brings peace and stillness and makes us feel close to nature. White he thought was a colour associated with harmony, silence and cleanliness while black was linked to grief darkness and the unknown, Red can boost our energy and is linked to improving confidence. Orange is a healthy colour with a fun side to it. Schools use bright colours to encourage children to take part in activity and learning.
Age influences our choice of favourite colours. Children like the colour yellow. As children become adults, yellow becomes less popular as a favourie colour. Older people seem to like blues and purples more than reds and oranges. This kind of knowledge about colours can be powerful in advertising and website design. It can have an effect on the success of these with their readers. If you are designing a website for children, the colour yellow would probably make it more successful. If you are designing a website for older people, the use of blues and purples would make it more successful than the use of yellow. It would seem that the power of colour is interesting as a subject.
Colours seem to influence more than we could imagine in our lives. It is interesting to note that different colours have different meanings in different cultures. Red is often thought of as the colour of danger, love and passion (激情) in the West. In China, red represents good luck, South Africa, it is the colour associated with death. In Western cultures, black is the colour associated with death, while in Japan, white is the colour of death. Purple is the colour of death in Thailand, but in the West, it is the colour of royalty, wealth and luxury.

    (2020·上海黄浦·九年级期末)Beautiful Moment
When I was in high school, I worked part-time helping Dad sell fruits and vegetables at a market. One day, as I was preparing the fruits, a little boy came by with his mom and sister. He was about eight years old, and the girl, six or seven. They were looking at the fruits in front of me. I heard the kids say to their mom in French.“They’re good!”I knew it was French because I can speak and understand it.
Then I noticed how the mom was picking the fruits. At first I thought she was really looking at the fruits because she was facing them. But then I noticed how much she had to feel and smell each one as she picked them out. And she often asked her son if it looked okay, but looked way above where his face was. Putting what I saw together, I was sure she was blind.
Both of the kids continued to help their mom pick out the fruits. The son made sure the fruits were not obviously bad, and the daughter handed them to her mom. The woman then felt each one and smiled, and the daughter would put them into their basket. The kids were smiling while helping their mom pick the fruits out.
Their smile and gentle manner moved me in a way that never happened before. It was so beautiful to see such young kids so willingly help. Most kids that age would be picking out candies or toys in a store for themselves, instead of helping their mom pick out fruits as the two kids did.
It was great to see the moment with my own eyes, but not so great because I didn’t tell the mom how beautiful her children were in their language. This is what I feel sorry to this day.

(2020·上海·九年级期末)Agatha Christie was one of the greatest British crime writers. She introduced the public to her literary character, the famous Belgian detective, Hercule Poirot in her crime novel in 1920. In total she wrote 66 detective novels and 14 short story collections, a billion copies of which have been sold in English. Her books have been translated into many different languages ,including Chinese.
Each story she wrote involved a mystery that had to be solved, but perhaps the greatest mystery is where she went for those 11 days. At the time of the disappearance in 1926, she was 36 years old and married to Archibald Christie. Her mother had died in the beginning of that year and her husband had left her alone to deal with her mother’s death. So she was very lonely and it seemed as if she might not be coping well emotionally.
In the middle of that year, her latest book was published and the book reviews loved it! Unluckily, soon after her book was published, her husband told her he was having an affair with a young woman and was going away for the weekend to be with her. On Friday, the 3rd of December 1926, Agatha Christie kissed her daughter who was asleep upstairs and drove away from the house. Her car was later found abandoned(被遗弃的) on an empty road near a lake and so people began the search for the talented writer. It was 11days later before someone recognized Agatha at a spa hotel in Harrogate. She had been living there using another name all that time. On her return, she never said much about what had happened.
Over the years, many people guessed why she disappeared. Some people said that she was upset with her husband and lost her memory as he was having an affair. A few people even thought that it was a publicity(宣传) trick to make sure that her newly-published book would sell well.
To this day no one knows for sure what happened and why. While books and even a movie have been made about the mysterious 11 days, it would seem that even the great detective Hercule Poirot would not be able to solve this mystery!

    (2021·上海黄浦·九年级期末)Answer the questions.
What will the house of the future look like? Could it have gardens on its walls, or a pool with fish for dinner? Architects believe that they are all possibilities. The only thing for sure is that the houses will be as green as possible.
    The tree house
Many architects in the world would like to build a “tree house.” Like a leaf, the surface of the house collects sunlight during the day. The energy can be used to heat water, produce electricity, and even create fresh air for the home. The “root” of the house is deep under the ground. It uses the soil (土壤) to control the home’s temperature.
    The Lizard house
Like a lizard (蜥蜴), changing colour with the weather is the most important design of a lizard house. When it’s in the bright sun, the cover of the house will turn dark to protect it from strong heat. During dark days, it turns white and takes in as much light and heat as possible to produce energy.
    Meals at home
The future of food production (生产) will be one part of the house design. Gardens may appear on the outside walls of the house. People can plant tomatoes, carrots and green tea on them. So every day in the morning, you just need to walk outside and collect your meals.
    Learning from the past
Looking to the future isn’t the only way to be green. Sometimes, ancient techniques (技术) can also help cut down energy use. For example, a chimney (烟囱) in the future house can be a useful air-conditioner because it is easier for hot air to go out at the chimney.
61.In the writer’s opinion, will the houses of the future be as green as possible?
    _______________________________________________________
62.What can we use the energy to do for the tree house?
    _______________________________________________________
63.What is the colour of the lizard house on sunny days?

64.Where can people plant tomatoes, carrots or green tea in the future house according to the passage?
    _______________________________________________________
65.According to the last paragraph, how can we make future houses green?
    _______________________________________________________
66.Among the four future houses introduced in the passage, which one would you like to live in? Why?

Jerusha Abbott was walking to Mrs Lippett’s office when she saw the back of a man. He cast a shadow on the hall. He had very long lees and arms and his shadow looked just like a long-leged spider.
Jerusha entered the office. Mrs. Lippett immediately spoke. “Jerusha! I have news for you. Did you see the gentleman who has just left?” “I only saw his back,” Jerusha replied.
“He is one of our most important trustees(理事). He told me not to tell you his name. He doesn’t want you to know it.” “Why is she telling me this?” Jerusha thought to herself. Mrs Lippett continued, “Do you remember Charles Benton and Henry Freize? Well, this gentleman sent them and other boys to college. Until now, he has only chosen boys. He doesn’t really like girls. However, at the meeting today, you were discussed.
Now you are too old to stay at the orphanage. Normally, you would be expected to work, but considering your excellent grades, especially in English, this gentleman has offered to send you to college.”

In return, you must write a letter every month telling him of your progress. The letters will be written to Mr John Smith. It is not his real name. Hi, honey
I know you’re very busy at work and I’m sure that’s why you haven’t returned my call, so I am sending you this e-mail. I always get a little sentimental (多愁善感的) this time of year since our family doesn’t celebrate Christmas. But if you felt like making the trip this year, I would be happy to pay for half of your ticket, but no pressure. I don’t feel lonely, especially since I made friends with the woman who moved in across the hall. Did I tell you about Loni? We have discovered that we both love movies, and have been seeing a film almost every day. I’m sure you don’t have much time, so I thought I would send you my “reviews” of the season's top films to help you figure out which ones are worth watching.
    “MARTIANS”
This is the best film of the year! Matt Damon is perfect. He is exactly the kind of man I would love to see you end up with, someone who is patient and could take care of you even in a dangerous situation.
    “HARFA KOZY”
It is an independent Polish film that Loni and I saw at the Museum of Fine Arts. It's about a young poor girl who lives with her uncle in a small house and spends her whole life dreaming of playing the harp (竖琴) at the concert. Unfortunately, her family was too poor to afford it, but when she turns ten, her uncle makes her a harp from the bones of her pet goat. It’s a wonderful film about the power of family and music, and it ends with some fun singing and dancing.
OK. It’s getting late here, so I’d better go to sleep. As you know, I would like to see any of these films again if you decide you are interested in coming home. Loni will visit her daughter in Chicago for the holidays so she cannot be my film date for a while, but no pressure, I can always just bring my notebook to the theatre and take notes for more "reviews", and that’s all the company I need.
    Love,
    Mum
