A
Four Strange American Traditions
Let’s look at four traditions Americans celebrate without even considering how strange the rest of world consider them.
Baby Showers
The custom of celebrating a new child has been around forever and is part of most cultures. In the US, however, it’s honored differently: with a baby shower. The baby shower began during the 1950s. It involves an afternoon party for the mom-to-be attended by close female friends and families. The guests play baby-themed games, and there’s always plenty of food.
Trick-or-treating
Many cultures have strong historic traditions like dressing up around the time of Halloween, but few of these involve children going door-to-door asking for candy with the words, “Trick or treat!” Typically, their parents wouldn’t allow them to talk to strangers, begging for candy in the streets at night. But all of a sudden they support such behaviors on one magical evening each fall.
Presidential Turkey Pardons
Thanksgiving in general seems to puzzle those who aren’t interested in American traditions, but perhaps no part of that turkey festival seems more unusual than the annual ceremony during which modern presidents give an official pardon to a live turkey. Interestingly, there’s also a great deal of confusion among Americans concerning the actual origins of this strange tradition.
Black Friday Shopping Sprees(疯狂购物)
People in the US have no problem lining up before the sun even rises to cash in on big deals on Black Friday. Just hours after millions of turkeys are eaten in the United States on Thanksgiving each year, the shoppers head out to get a start on their yearly Christmas gift list. Black Friday sales promotion traditionally launches this national weekend shopping activity, which continues with Small Business Saturday and ends with Cyber Monday.
21. What can the children do in Trick-or-treating?
A. Ask for candy from strangers. B. Play some baby-themed games.
C. Hold a historic traditional party. D. Support their parents to make a trick.
22. Which tradition’s origin is still unclear?
A. Baby Showers. B. Trick-or-treating.
C. Presidential Turkey Pardons. D. Black Friday Shopping Sprees.
23. Why do Americans head out to go shopping on Black Friday?
A. They are fond of shopping activities. B. They can buy some discounted goods.
C. They want to improve its popularity. D. They have to prepare candy for strangers.

Haley Moss knows that for our legal system to function the way it should, it needs to look like the people it represents—including people with disabilities. “We need all types of minds to get all kinds of jobs done,” she says. Moss represents that concept in more ways than one: Not only is she Florida’s first openly autistic (自闭症) lawyer, but she is also a public speaker and consultant on disability at work.
Moss initially thought she would be a doctor “I thought the coolest thing would be becoming an autistic expert,” she says— but soon realized she wasn’t enthusiastic about the science. She decided to focus on what she enjoys: helping people, making a difference, writing, and speaking—all things lawyers do. After her undergraduate work at the University of Florida, she graduated from the University of Miami School of Law. From there, she worked mostly in antiterrorism litigation (反恐怖主义诉讼) at a firm in Florida before starting her own public speaking and consulting business.
Moss is hoping to change the fact that not many lawyers are open about their disabilities. “I remember in my first year of law school, there was a blind student in my section, but she did not return for the second semester—and I wondered why,” she says. “Law school is not always as accessible as it could be for people with disabilities. However, if more people with disabilities go to law school and begin working in our communities, they’ll be able to create the change we need.” Moss now plays a role in inspiring others to discover the benefits of a legal education as part of LSAC’s BE IndiVISIBLE campaign, which encourages all people from all walks of life to consider law school.
For any law student or lawyer with a disability, Moss recommends “showing up as your full self”—in other words, not hiding your disability or acting like someone you’re not. “Don’t try to be the same as your normal or nondisabled counterparts (同行),” she says. “But remember that if you do choose to divulge your disability, make it clear that it’s not everything you are.
24. How does Moss differ from other lawyers?
A. She only defends for the disabled.
B. She is the first openly autistic lawyer in Florida.
C. She is only a lawyer with plenty of new concepts.
D. She is devoted to changing the present legal system.
25. What can we infer about Moss from paragraph 2?
A. She got a doctor degree at first.
B. She enjoyed science at university.
C. She selected the most popular major at university.
D. She got a job in the legal profession after graduation.
26. What happened to the blind student?
A. She might quit school. B. She launched many campaigns.
C She often inspired her classmates. D. She was devoted to her community.
27. What can replace the underlined word “divulge” in the last paragraph?
A. Treat B. excuse C. ignore D. expose
B 25. D 26. A 27. D
根据第一段最后一句“Not only is she Florida’s first openly autistic (自闭症) lawyer, but she is also a public speaker and consultant on disability at work.(她不仅是佛罗里达州第一个公开患有自闭症的律师,还是一名公众演说家和工作中的残疾顾问。)”

From there, she worked mostly in antiterrorism litigation (反恐怖主义诉讼) at a firm in Florida before starting her own public speaking and consulting business.(在佛罗里达大学完成本科学业后,她毕业于迈阿密大学法学院。
根据第三段“I remember in my first year of law school, there was a blind student in my section, but she did not return for the second semester(我记得在我上法学院的第一年,我的班上有一个盲人学生,但她在第二学期没有回来)”可知,Moss班上的盲人学生只来了一个学期,第二个学期就没回来了。 故选A。
根据划线词上文“For any law student or lawyer with a disability, Moss recommends “showing up as your full self”—in other words, not hiding your disability or acting like someone you’re not. “Don’t try to be the same as your normal or nondisabled counterparts (同行),” she says.(Moss建议,对于任何有残疾的法律系学生或律师,“展现完整的自我”——换句话说,不要隐瞒你的残疾,也不要表现得像别人一样。她说:“不要试图和你的正常或正常同事一样。”)”可知,Moss建议残疾的法律系学生或律师,不要隐瞒自己的残疾,要表现出真实的自己。由此推知,划线词divulge是“透露,暴露”的意思,和expose意思相近,故选D。

A new study found that children aged 3 to 5 who consumed more ultra-processed(超加工) foods had poorer skills at doing sports than children who consumed less of these foods. It also showed lower cardiovascular(心血管) fitness in 12- to 15-year-olds who consumed more ultra-processed foods.
Although previous research has shown that consuming ultra-processed foods is linked with a higher risk for cardiovascular disease in adults, this is one of the first studies to show a link between consumption of these foods and lower levels of physical fitness in children.
Ultra-processed. foods were classified in this study as including packaged snacks, breakfast cereals, candies, soda, sweetened juices and yogurts, canned soups and prepared foods like pizza, hotdogs, burgers and chicken nuggets.
“Healthy dietary and exercise behaviors are established at a very young age,” said research team leader Jacqueline Vernarelli, PhD, associate professor and director for the Master of Public Health program at Sacred Heart University. “Our findings point to the need to educate families about cost-effective ways to reduce ultra-processed food intake to help decrease the risk for cardiovascular health problems in adulthood.”
“Though highly processed convenience foods are easy to throw into a school bag, our re-search shows the importance of preparing healthy snacks and meals,” said Vernarelli. “Think of it like saving for retirement; You’re making decisions now that will influence your child’s future.”
As a next step, the researchers plan to look more closely at consumption patterns for ultra-processed food by age group. For example, do kids eat more of these foods for breakfast, at lunch or for snacks? A better understanding of how and when these foods are consumed could help inform future strategy designed to encourage healthy eating.
28. What does the study show?
A. 3- to 5-year-olds have poorer skills at doing sports.
B. Ultra-processed foods do harm to children’s health.
C. 12- to 15-year-olds have lower cardiovascular fitness.
D. Children aged 3 to 5 consume more ultra-processed foods.
29. What should parents do about ultra-processed foods?
A. Get rid of them thoroughly. B. Let children save for them.
C. Know how to take in less of them. D. Educate children about their development.
30. What is Vernarelli’s attitude towards ultra-processed foods?
A. Ignorant. B. Objective. C. Optimistic. D. Concerned.
31. What is the text mainly about?
A. The popularity of ultra-processed foods. B. The effect ultra-processed foods on children.
C. The decision influencing your child’s fitness. D. The reason of ultra-processed foods being harm.
B 29. C 30. D 31. B

文章第一段“A new study found that children aged 3 to 5 who consumed more ultra-processed(超加工) foods had poorer skills at doing sports than children who consumed less of these foods. Adaptation and innovation(创新) of traditional opera is the important trend of Chinese opera circle in recent years. In order to attract young audiences of new generation and catch up with the time, traditional opera circle makes efforts to create new works. In recent years, traditional opera came across the change of time and society. They gradually lost the main elderly audiences and traditional opera was not attractive for young audiences.
In order to find new opportunities, using modern sound, light and digital stage effects, China’s traditional Peking Opera is appealing to young people in a fashionable and innovative way, as the classic art faces an aging audience.
The centuries-old Tianleyuan Theater in Beijing has introduced fashionable performances of Peking Opera. The opera combines instrumental music, vocal performance, mime(哑剧表演), dance and acrobatics(杂技).
Tianleyuan has a jingju art experience section and fashionable performances. It has attracted more than 2,000 audiences members, mostly young people, according to theater staff.
“Good art should keep pace with the times, so does jingju,” said Zhang Zishang, a 22-year-old performer of The Drunken Beauty, one of the classic jingju plays performed in the theater. “I feel today’s performance is very special,” Zhang said. She was born into a family of jingju performers and has had 10 years of stage experience, “Innovation is good, but we must also carry on the basic elements of jingju,” another young performer Deng said.
According to Deng, innovation is perhaps the best way for jingiju to deal with the problem of an aging audience. It has made successful attempts to combine jingju with local opera forms such as ballet when organizing performances abroad. “Innovation can help traditional arts go further. We are happy to see many young faces, and some of them even come twice to experience the ‘new’ art,” she added.
32. Why is adaptation and innovation of traditional opera important?
A. To run after fashion. B. To attract the young audiences.
C. To improve digital stage effects. D. To change the traditional opera circle.
33. Which of the following can best describe Tianleyuan Theater?
A. A destroyer of Peking Opera. B. An objector of modern opera.
C. A pioneer of innovative opera. D. A defender of traditional opera.
34. How does Deng feel about the innovation of jingju?
A. Helpful. B. Unreliable. C. Worthless. D. Conservative.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. The traditional opera is dying out
B. The future of the traditional opera is promising
C. Traditional opera circle is innovating to attract young audiences
D. The performers of the traditional opera are supporting jingju

Wearing a face mask will keep you and others safer when you have to leave the house. ____36____. But the bad news is that you now realize you suffer from unpleasant smells. Here are four ways to combat bad breath and make wearing a mask a more pleasant experience.
●Keep away from certain foods
Onions and garlic not only add flavor to many foods but also add smells that are not easily brushed away. The substances that cause their bad smells make their way into your bloodstream and travel to your lungs, where you breathe them out. ____37____.
● ____38____
Saliva (唾液) is the key ingredient in your mouth that helps keep the smell under control because it helps wash away food particles and bacteria. If you are not producing much saliva, try drinking water or chewing sugarless gum.
●Brush your teeth
You’d better brush your teeth at least twice a day to reduce harmful bacteria on your teeth. The sticky buildup on your teeth collects bacteria that cause bad breath, and trapped food adds to the problem. ____39____. It is proved that if you brush too hard, you can wear down your teeth, making them vulnerable to decay.
●Brush your tongue
____40____. It can end up on your tongue. To rid your tongue of smell—causing bacteria, remember to brush it when you clean your teeth. If your toothbrush is too big to reach the back of your tongue, buy a tool used for removing the accumulation.

空前说“Wearing a face mask will keep you and others safer when you have to leave the house.(当你不得不离开家时,戴上口罩会让你和其他人更安全。)”,空后说“But the bad news is that you now realize you suffer from unpleasant smells.(但坏消息是,你现在意识到你正在忍受难闻的气味。)”
空前说“Onions and garlic not only add flavor to many foods but also add smells that are not easily brushed away. The substances that cause their bad smells make their way into your bloodstream and travel to your lungs, where you breathe them out.(洋葱和大蒜不仅为许多食物增添了风味,还增加了不易清除的气味。导致难闻气味的物质会进入你的血液,然后到达你的肺部,在那里你把它们呼出来。)”,结合小标题“Keep away from certain foods(远离某些食物)”可知,空格处应说要避免空前所列的这些食物,G选项“Avoiding those foods is the best way to get rid of the problem(避免这些食物是摆脱问题的最好方法)”指出了要避免前面所说的食物,承接上文,符合语境,故选G。
空格处是本段小标题,由空格下方的“Saliva (唾液) is the key ingredient in your mouth that helps keep the smell under control because it helps wash away food particles and bacteria. If you are not producing much saliva, try drinking water or chewing sugarless gum.(唾液是口腔中帮助控制气味的关键成分,因为它有助于冲走食物颗粒和细菌。如果你分泌的唾液不多,试着喝水或嚼无糖口香糖。)”可知,本段主要讲的是要保持口腔湿润,A选项“Avoid dry mouth(避免口干)”说明了要保持口腔湿润,概括了本段内容,可作为小标题,故选A。
【39题详解】
空后说“It is proved that if you brush too hard, you can wear down your teeth, making them vulnerable to decay.(事实证明,如果刷牙太用力,就会磨损牙齿,使它们容易腐烂。)”
空后说“It can end up on your tongue. To rid your tongue of smell—causing bacteria, remember to brush it when you clean your teeth.(它可能会落在你的舌头上。为了清除舌头上产生异味的细菌,记得在刷牙的时候刷舌头。)”,空格处应说细菌不仅仅会在牙齿上,E选项“Bacteria don’t just live on your teeth(细菌不仅生活在你的牙齿上)”和后文“它可能会落在你的舌头上”相呼应,说明细菌还会落在舌头上,因此引起下文,符合语境,故选E。
