A Georgia mom is winning praise for the way she’s teaching her children, aged 13,10 and 6, about money.
Shaketha MeGregor, a single mother in Dublin, Georgia, knew she needed a solution after frequent requests from her three kids for things like new toys and money to do things with their friends.
She came up with the unique idea to host a “job fair(就业展览会)”for her three children, Jahkeem, in seventh grade, Takeia, in fifth grade, and Serinity, in first grade. The three positions at the job fair were the kitchen manager, lead housekeeper and laundry supervisor(洗衣房主管).Children had to earn their pocket money by doing a job.
Jahkeem, Takeia and Serinity each picked the job they wanted to apply for, filled out the application and had interviews with their employer-their mom.
“My oldest and my youngest both applied for the lead housekeeper,” McGregor said.“ As to my 6-year-old daughter Serinity, I was more impressed with her application and her interview than my 13-year-old son Jahkeem.”
”I want them to be familiar with the process when they are older,“ she said. ”Whether they’re applying to a school or for a new job. they can look back and say, “I did this with Mom years ago.” As a parent you want to protect your children as much as possible, but you know that eventually they’ll have to experience it on their own and a child’s greatest lesson in life is going through the process.
MeGregor’s post on Facebook where she shared her job fair idea now has more than 200,000 likes. She said she hoped it inspired other parents to think outside of the box and let their kids’ voices be heard.“ What I’m realizing is that kids just want to be part of something. The first-hand experience is the best way to educate children,” McGregor said.
    24. What do you know about McGregor’s solution?
    A. It is creative. B. It’s uninteresting
    C. It is strange. D. It’s traditional.
    25. How can Takeia get the new toy she wants according to the passage?
    A. By doing housework. B. By behaving well.
    C. By getting good marks. D. By listening to McGregor.
    26. What can we infer from the result of the job fair?
    A. Serinity was awarded a new toy.
    B. Serinity got the position as a kitchen manager.
    C. Takeia became the lead housekeeper at the fair.
D Jahkeen didn’t get the job he had applied for.
    27. What do we know from the last paragraph?
    A. Children should always listen to their parents views.
    B. Parents should pay their children for anything.
    C. MeGregor’s post is well received online.
    D. MeGregor’s idea is suitable for all families.

Psychological science is full of interesting topics, many of which tell a coherent picture of human nature, but some of which create seemingly contradictory stories. A case in point is the tricky and misunderstood overlap between strength-based science and the research on narcissism (自恋).
There is now convincing evidence to show that narcissism is on the rise, especially in our youth. Some researchers say that about 25% of young people showing symptoms of narcissism. The inflated ego of Generation Me is reflected in reality TV, celebrity worship, and out-of-control consumerism.
We are correct to be concerned about this phenomenon, but our fear that all kids are potential narcissists has caused an unhelpful counter-reaction to approaches that seek to make our children and teens feel good about themselves.
In my own research on strength-based parenting, it is common for people to wrongly think this approach to be the cause of narcissism. Their argument seems to be that a child who knows their strengths will automatically view themselves as better than everyone else. It is argued that the self-assurance that comes with identifying and using their positive qualities will make a child selfish and uncaring. Genuine confidence about one’s strengths is categorized as over-confidence; desirable self-knowledge is branded as excessive self-admiration.
Why does this occur? It’s partly because more is known about narcissism than strengths. While strengths psychology has largely stayed within the limit of academic journals, research on narcissism has made its way into the mass media and our daily life. The New York Times noted that narcissism is a favored topic and that people everywhere are diagnosing others with it.
The fear that a strength-based approach will cause narcissism also occurs because of our binary (非此即彼) thinking. We mistakenly believe that one cannot be both confident and humble. We focus on Donald Trump and Kim Kardashian rather than Mahatma Gandhi and Mother Teresa. Without confidence in their strengths, Gandhi and Mother Teresa couldn’t have achieved so much, and yet modesty and selflessness are their qualities.
When we assume that strength-focus is the same as a self-focus, we fail to make the idea clear that people who know their strengths are, actually, more likely to be pro-social and ready to help others.
It’s easy to conclude that every young person is at risk of becoming a narcissist but I’d like to stand up for the thousands of young kids I have worked with who are caring, thoughtful and humble—even when they use their strengths.
    28. Which of the following opinions may the writer agree with?
    A. Strength-based parenting leads to narcissism.
    B. It’s unhelpful for us to make our children feel good about themselves.
    C. To say all kids are potential narcissists is overstating the case.
    D. Children who know their strengths tend to be more selfish and uncaring.
    29. Why are teenagers’ strengths often considered as narcissism?
    A. There is a lack of narcissism in our common sense.
    B. Academic journals report more on narcissism.
    C. Many people are diagnosed with narcissism by doctors.
    D. The general public has less access to strengths psychology.
30 What’s the author’s attitude towards young kids’ strength-based approaches?
    A. Skeptical B. Favorable. C. Neutral. D. Doubtful.
    31. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
    A. Teens’ Confidence Misunderstood B. Teens’ Narcissism Diagnosis
    C. Teens’ Strength-based Approach D. Teens’ Psychology Research
    D
Plastic recycling is a hot topic. But what’s the real face behind it? You diligently sort your rubbish; you dutifully wash your plastic containers; then everything gets thrown in a landfill or in the ocean anyway. According to one analysis, only 9% of all plastic ever made has likely been recycled. Here’s the kicker companies making all that plastic have spent millions on advertising campaigns lecturing us about recycling while knowing full well that most plastic will never be recycled.
A new investigation by National Public Radio (NPR) and the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) reports that the large oil and gas companies that manufacture plastics have known for decades that recycling plastic was unlikely to ever happen on a broad scale because of the high costs involved. “They were not interested in putting any real money or effort into recycling because they wanted to sell raw material,” Larry Thomas, former president of one of the plastic industry’s most powerful trade groups, told NPR. “There is a lot more money to be made in selling new plastic than reusing the old stuff. But, in order to keep selling new plastic, the industry had to clean up its wasteful image. If the public thinks that recycling is working, then they are not going to be so concerned about the environment,” Thomas noted.
We have been successfully convinced that people start pollution and people can stop it and that if we just recycle more, the planet will be OK. To some degree that is right: there must be a level of personal responsibility when it comes to the climate emergency. We all have to do our part. But individual action is a tiny drop in a heavily polluted ocean. We need systematic change to make a real difference. And, more than anything, we need to change what we value.
    32. According to the text, what does the underlined word “kicker” probably mean?
    A. An event that is controversial.
    B. A player who kicks the football.
    C. An action that is taken to start a plan quickly.
    D. A discovery that is unpleasant and unexpected.
    33. Which best describes Larry Thomas opinion on plastic recycling?
    A. Plastic recycling is necessary and effective.
    B. Large amounts of money are spent on recycling.
    C. The companies try to promote the sales of new material.
    D. The companies prefer to sell recycled material rather than new materials.
    34. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
    A. Most people have a sense of responsibility.
B Plenty of rubbish is dropped into the ocean.
    C. Systematic change was made to reduce pollution.
    D. Fighting against pollution calls for joint efforts.
    35. Which is probably the best title for the text?
    A. Plastic recycling: a trick in industries.
    B. Plastic recycling: a benefit to the public.
    C. Plastic recycling: a way to reduce pollution.
    D. Plastic recycling: a popularity among people.

Violet and Tilly were two sisters. Tilly was so stuck with her sister that she always followed her elder sister, Violet, everywhere. For example, when Violet was painting, she would paint by her side. Every time, Violet looked at her angrily. Couldn’t she find her own thing to do? This time, it was Tilly’s first week at gymnastics, while Violet had done gymnastics for the past two years.
Violet sat on the gym floor, waiting for her turn to do somersaults (翻筋斗). She frowned at her little sister across the room. Why couldn’t Tilly always find her own thing to do? “Violet, you’re up!” called Violet’s instructor, Miss Taylor. Violet came over and pushed off with her legs and straightened her arms. She did one, two, three somersaults. Miss Taylor clapped. “Perfect!”
Violet noticed that Tilly had stepped away from the younger group to watch Violet’s somersaults. “Tilly!” called Tilly’s instructor, Miss Brooke, from across the room. Tilly didn’t seem to hear. Not until she was called three times did she run back to her group. “ Your turn to do somersaults. ” Miss Brooke put an arm around her. Tilly walked to the mat with her face turning red like a tomato. She bent down to start a somersault. When she rolled, she fell heavily on the mat. Kids laughed in surprise at the noise.
Tilly stood uncomfortably and then ran towards the restroom. She was gone from the gym, as Violet had wanted. But it didn’t feel right. After telling Miss Taylor where she was going, Violet hurried to the restroom. She found Tilly crying hard. Violet put an arm around her sister. Seeing Violet, Tilly cried even harder. Tilly sniffed “I don’t want to do gymnastics any more.” She wiped away the tears with the back of her hand. This was Violet’s chance. If she said nothing to her sister, Tilly might quit gymnastics forever.

    D. Jahkeen didn’t get the job he had applied for.

    【答案】28. C 29. D 30. B 31. A
    【答案】32. D 33. C 34. D 35. A

    【答案】Dear Peter,
I’m glad to receive your letter asking for advice on the interview for the debate team. I’m writing to remind you of how to prepare for it.
I think you need to read more books about the basic theory of debating. It can help you consolidate the foundation of your knowledge and it can also show them your passion. Additionally, wearing something formal can make you stand out among the candidates and impress the interviewers greatly. At last, you should try to smile more during the interview and be confident. I hope my humble proposals could be practical and helpful.
I hope to hear from you about your good news soon!
    Yours,
    Li Hua
    第二节(满分25分)
    67. 阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

    【答案】One possible version:
But Violet knew how excited Tilly had been about joining in gymnastics. Every time Tilly watched Violet doing somersaults at the gym, the big toothy smile was always on her face. So Violet decided to cheer her up. Casting a comforting smile at Tilly, she helped her sister wipe out tears from her cheeks. “You’re better at somersaults than I was on my first day of gymnastics. ” Violet explained how embarrassing her first somersault was. A smile took hold of Tilly when the amusing scene came to her.
Seeing a smile on Tilly’s face, Violet said, “What about giving it another try?” Tilly smiled a little more and made up her mind that she would not be a coward . “OK!” Picking up all her courage, Tilly walked back into the gym, where she did much practice and finally succeeded in doing somersaults perfectly under the guidance of Miss Taylor. Nobody could feel more on top of the world than her then. A bright smile spread across the little girl’s face. Gratitude to her elder sister filled her eyes.
