    18. Which pet may an outgoing person prefer?
    A. A dog. B. A cat. C. A bird.
    19. What may a cat owner be like?
    A. Sociable. B. Careful. C. Clever.
    20. What does the speech mainly talk about?
    A. More outgoing dog people.
    B. Less sociable cat people.
    C. Pet people’s personalities.
A 19. C 20. C
M: Are you a dog person or a cat person? What psychological factors make a person choose one type of pet over the other?
An outgoing person prefers dogs. This should really come as no surprise. Owning a dog is a social experience, because you always have to walk them and interact with other dog owners. If you really like talking to other people, a dog might be for you. Cats on the other hand tend to stay at home, which means that taking care of a cat requires much less social interaction.
Cat people are smarter. While studies show that dog lovers are more outgoing and lively, cat lovers score higher on intelligence tests, and are said to be more open-minded. They are also more curious about the world, even though they might not leave the house to see it as much!
Do you love a dog or a cat? Are you a different kind of pet person like a turtle person or a bird person? Does your personality match with some features we talked about earlier? I hope my speech will be helpful to you. Thank you for listening!

The following chart is provided by Elizabeth Weise from《America Today》. It shows the growth of the immersive schools in America.
    Immersive (沉浸式) Schools in America
In recent years, there have been quite a few Chinese immersive schools in America.
Full Immersion: Pre-k children aged 2 to 4 are fully immersed in Chinese all day — 5 days per week.
Part Immersion: Children (in kindergarten through Grade 5 in primary schools, from Grade 6 to Grade 8 in middle schools) learn all subjects in both Chinese and English.
Based on The Daily Advertiser’s report, foreign children at the age of about 5 are having Chinese lessons like this:

Zhaoting Xia, a 29-year-old teacher, holds paper copies of Chinese currency and invites kids up one at a time to use the “money” to purchase something from her pretend fruit stand.
One of the students, a 5-year-old boy, picks out his money and greets Xia with “ni hao”, starting the conversation as he has been taught. Then he works in some vocabulary words to ask for a plastic ear of corn. Xia tells him the price, and he counts the money in his hand before making the exchange. They finish with “xiexie” or “thank you”.
In this one exercise, they’ve practiced a lot in such a “real situation”. And all of this takes place in Chinese.
    21. What can we learn about the immersive schools in America based on the chart?
    A. Children in them are aged 2 to 4.
B They accept only Chinese children in America.
    C. All the teachers in the immersive schools come from China.
    D. The immersive schools have greatly increased in America since 2007.
    22. Which of the following can children practice in this one exercise mentioned in the text?
    A. Vocabulary, sentence structure, math and culture.
    B. Knowing about “Chinese money — renminbi”.
    C. Counting the number from 1-10 in Chinese.
    D. Greeting by saying “Hello!” to each other.
    23. What might Elizabeth Weise be?
    A. A teacher. B. A headmaster.
    C. A reporter. D. A director.

Like many other five-year-olds, Jeanie Low of Houston, Texas, would use a stool (凳子) to help her reach the bathroom sink. However, the plastic step-stool she had at home was unstable and cluttered up the small bathroom shared by her whole family. After learning of an invention contest held by her school that year, Jeanie resolved to enter the contest by creating a stool that would be a permanent fixture in the bathroom, and yet could be kept out of the way when not in use.
Jeanie decided to make a stool attached to the bathroom cabinet door under the sink. She cut a board of wood into two pieces, each about two feet wide and one foot long. Using metal hinges (铰链), Jeanie attached one piece of the wood to the front of the cabinet door, and the second piece to the first. The first piece was set just high enough so that when it swung out horizontally from the cabinet door, the second piece would swing down from the first, just touching the ground, and so serving as a support for the first piece of the wood. This created a convenient, strong platform for any person too short to reach the sink. When not in use, the hinges allowed the two pieces of wood to fold back up tightly against the cabinet, where they were held in place by magnets (磁铁). Jeanie called her invention “the Kiddie Stool”.
Jeanie’s Kiddie Stool won first place in her school’s contest. Two years later, it was awarded first prize again at Houston’s first annual Invention Fair. As a result, Jeanie was invited to make a number of public appearances with her Kiddie Stool, and was featured on local TV as well as in newspapers. Many people found the story of the Kiddie Stool inspiring because it showed that with a pair of observant eyes, anyone can be an inventor.
    24. According to the passage, why did Jeanie Low invent the Kiddie Stool?
    A. The old stool wasn’t tall enough for her.
    B. She was invited to enter an invention contest.
    C. Other five-year-olds had problems reaching the sink.
    D. The plastic stool was not firm and often got in the way.
    25. What is the design of Jeanie’s Kiddie Stool like?
    A. The platform is supported by two metal hinges.
    B. The two wooden pieces swing from left to right.
    C. The wooden pieces are kept in place by hinges and magnets.
    D. The Kiddie Stool will swing out only when the cabinet door opens.
    26. What are the characteristics of Jeanie’s Kiddie Stool?
    A. Steady and convenient. B. Fragile and single-use.
    C. Conventional and portable. D. Foldable and recyclable.
    27. What message does the passage convey?
    A. What is suitable is the best.
    B. Success comes from failure.
    C. Necessity is the mother of invention.
    D. Genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration.
D 25. C 26. A 27. C
根据第一段中“However, the plastic step-stool she had at home was unstable and cluttered up the small bathroom shared by her whole family. After learning of an invention contest held by her school that year, Jeanie resolved to enter the contest by creating a stool that would be a permanent fixture in the bathroom, and yet could be kept out of the way when not in use.(然而,她家里的塑料台阶凳不稳定,把全家人共享的小浴室弄得乱七八糟。在得知那年学校举办了一场发明比赛后,珍妮决定参加比赛,她发明了一种凳子,它可以永久地放在浴室里,不用时也可以放在外面)”可知,因为塑料凳子不结实,经常碍事,所以珍妮·洛发明了儿童凳子。故选D项。
    【25题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“She cut a board of wood into two pieces, each about two feet wide and one foot long. C
Climbing, I once thought, was a very manly activity, but as I found my way into this activity, I came to see that something quite different happens on the rock.
Like wild swimming, rock climbing involves you into the landscape. On the rock, I am fully present. Eyes pay close attention.ears are alert (警觉的), and hands move across the surface. Unlike walking, where I could happily wander about absent-mindedly, in climbing, attentive observation is essential.
As an arts student studying English literature, I discovered a new type of reading from outdoor climbing. Going out on to the crags (悬崖), I saw how you can learn to read the rocks and develop a vocabulary of physical movements. Good climbers knew how to map their bodies on to the stone. Watching them, I wanted to possess that skillful language.
My leap happened when I worked for the Cairngorms National Park Authority. Guiding my explorations into this strange new landscape was Nan Shepherd. Unlike the goal-directed mindset of many mountaineers, she is not concerned with peaks or personal beats. Shepherd sees the mountain as a total environment and she celebrates the Caingorms as a place alive with plants, rocks, animals and elements. Through her generous spirit and my own wanderings, I saw that rock climbing need not be a process of testing yourself against anything. Rather, the intensity of focus could release you into another way of being.
Spending so much time in high and stony places has changed my view on the world and our place in it. I have come into physical contact with processes that go way beyond the everyday. Working with gravity, geology (地质学), rhythms of weather and deep time, I gain an actual relationship with the earth. This connection lies at the heart of my passion for rock climbing. I return to the rocks, because this is where I feel in touch — with our land.
    28. Why does the author like climbing?
    A. It challenges her to compete with men.
    B. Ir allows her a urique attitude toward rock.
    C. It teaches her how to possess a new language.
    D. It makes her feel connected with the world.
    29. What does the writer find important in climbing?
    A. Balance. B. Concentration. C. Determination. D. Curiosity.
    30. What does the writer learn from Nan Shepherd?
    A. Climbing goes together with nature.
    B. Every mountain top is within reach.
    C. The best climber is the one having fun.
    D. You cannot achieve high unless you change.
    31. What does the underlined word “it” in paragrap 5 refer to?
    A. Time. B. Contact. C. The world. D. My view.
D 29. B 30. A 31. C
根据最后一段中“Working with gravity, geology (地质学), rhythms of weather and deep time, I gain an actual relationship with the earth. This connection lies at the heart of my passion for rock climbing.(通过研究重力、地质、天气节奏和深层时间,我获得了与地球的真实关系。这种联系正是我对攀岩的热情所在)”可知,作者喜欢爬山是因为爬山可以与世界产生联系。故选D项。
    【29题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中中“On the rock, I am fully present. Eyes pay close attention, ears are alert (警觉的), and hands move across the surface. Unlike walking, where I could happily wander about absent-mindedly, in climbing, attentive observation is essential.(在岩石上,我完全存在于这里。眼睛密切关注,耳朵警觉,手在水面上移动。不像散步,我可以愉快地心不在焉地漫步,在爬山时,全神贯注的观察是必不可少的)”可知,作者发现爬山时专注很重要。故选B项。
    【30题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中“Shepherd sees the mountain as a total environment and she celebrates the Caingorms as a place alive with plants, rocks, animals and.elements.(Shepherd把这座山视为一个完整的环境,她赞美Caingorms是一个充满了植物,岩石,动物和各种元素的地方)”可知,作者从Shepherd身上学到爬山是与大自然融为一体。故选A项。
根据最后一段首句“Spending so much time in high and stony places has changed my view on the world and our place in it.(在高处多石的地方呆了这么长时间,改变了我对世界和我们在其中的地位的看法)”可知,此处指作者通过爬山改变了对世界和自身在世界中的地位的看法,it指代前文的“世界”。故选C项。
    D
There may be a reason why astronauts are crazy about the view from space but never mention the food. Astronauts aboard the International Space Station must drink meals out of a plastic squeeze-bag because of zero gravity. Food in space can only be reheated instead of being cooked fresh. Besides, meals for each crew member must be stored in advance and eaten in order. All of this may sound a little difficult to accept.
Therefore, it was one small step for interstellar (星际的) cuisine when U. S. astronaut Megan McArthur recently posted photos of herself holding a pancakes gorged with beef, tomatoes and a fresh hatch chilli (红番椒) grown aboard the International Space Station itself.
“Best space pancakes yet,” she shared online.
Pesquet, a French astronaut, posted on Instagram, “It is such a joy to grow (and eat) your own food, and necessary for further exploration of our Solar System.” It seems there is a suitcase-sized space garden aboard the ISS (International Space Station) that holds about six “pillows” stuffed with clay and fertilizer, and a LED light. Astronauts have grown several kinds of vegetables including Chinese cabbage and red Russian kale (羽衣甘蓝) in this micro-plot, to test which plants might grow best during a long space voyage.
We called Melva Aguirre, who owns the Pepper Pot in Hatch, N. M., home of hatch chilli. She says the harvest of their famous local crop in outer space is the talk of the town. “Now the whole universe knows how great our chilli are,” she said. When I asked if she could recommend a hatch chilli recipe, Aguirre told me, “Just stuff it.” “Stuff it?” I asked, and she laughed and said, “I mean, in your mouth.” A recipe even I can follow.
    32. What can know about astronauts’ eating food in the space station?

    B. The food can be cooked in various ways.

    A. Subscribed. B. Filled.
    C. awarded. D. Revealed.
    34. Why do astronauts grow Chinese cabbage and other vegetables aboard the ISS?
    A. To kill the spare minutes. B. To entertain themselves during the voyage.
    C. To explore the universe. D. To test for the plants growing best.

    A. Challenges Astronauts Face in Space.
    B. The Best Food Ever for Space Voyages.
    C. Fine Dining on the International Space Station.

根据第一段“Food in space can only be reheated instead of being cooked fresh. Besides, meals for each crew member must be stored in advance and eaten in order. All of this may sound a little difficult to accept. (太空中的食物只能重新加热,不能新鲜烹饪。此外,每个船员的膳食必须提前储存,并按顺序食用。所有这些听起来可能有点难以接受)”可知,空间站的宇航员不能随心所欲吃他们想吃的食物,故选C。
    【33题详解】
词义猜测题。根据划线词句子“a pancakes gorged with beef, tomatoes and a fresh hatch chilli (红番椒) grown aboard the International Space Station itself.( 煎饼里gorged牛肉、西红柿和在国际空间站上种植的新鲜辣椒)”并结合常识,可猜测gorged意为“塞满”,即煎饼里塞满了牛肉、西红柿和辣椒。A.
根据第四段“Astronauts have grown several kinds of vegetables including Chinese cabbage and red Russian kale (羽衣甘蓝) in this micro-plot, to test which plants might grow best during a long space voyage. (宇航员们已经在这个微型试验田中种植了包括大白菜和红色俄罗斯羽衣甘蓝在内的几种蔬菜,以测试哪种植物在漫长的太空航行中生长得最好)”可知,宇航员在国际空间站种植大白菜和其他蔬菜是为了测试哪种植物长得最好。故选D。
    【35题详解】
主旨大意题。 根据文章大意结合三个宇航员描述空间站的饮食““Best space pancakes yet,” she shared online.(“最好吃的太空煎饼,”她在网上分享道),第四段的“It is such a joy to grow (and eat) your own food, and necessary for further exploration of our Solar System.(自己种植(并食用)食物是一种乐趣,这对进一步探索太阳系是必要的)”,最后一段的“She says the harvest of their famous local crop in outer space is the talk of the town. (她说,他们在外太空收获的当地著名作物是镇上的热门话题)”可知,文章介绍了宇航员在空间站的饮食现状及研究新成果。C选项“国际空间站上的美食”符合文章大意,可以做标题,故选C。
    第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
    阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
    How to survive a stampede
At least 154 people were killed and more than 100 others injured in a stampede(惊逃)accident that occurred at Itaewon, Seoul, Korea, during a Halloween gathering, local authorities said early Sunday morning. What should we do in case of similar crowding and trampling(踩踏) accidents? Here are a few tips to increase the chances of survival in an incident.
    Look for exits
If you are in a crowd, a first and most important thing is to make yourself familiar with your surroundings and mentally notice alternate exits. _____36_____.
Keep an eye on the crowd
_____37_____, as panic situations can often be expected. When in danger, a few seconds can make all the difference, giving you the possibility of taking advantage of your escaping route.
    _____38_____
If you find yourself in the middle of a moving crowd do not fight against the pressure, do not stand still or sit down, because you could easily get trampled. Move in the same direction of the crowd keeping your hands up by your chest like a boxer — it gives you movement and protects your chest.
    Protect your head
If you fall, get up quickly. _____39_____, or if that is not possible, then cover your head with your arms and curl up. Do not lay on your stomach or back, as this dangerously exposes your lungs.
    Move diagonally towards the exit
After you’re pushed forward, like in a wave there’s a quiet period. In that period is your chance to move, and the way you move is on a diagonal(对角) , between pockets of people. There’s always space between people. A couple of steps sideways, another wave surge, then another couple of steps in the next quiet period. _____40_____.
    A. Avoid any choke points
    B. Keep pace with the crowd
    C. Be aware of the general atmosphere of the crowd
    D. You don’t want to be knocked unconscious in this situation
    E. You work your way out that way till you get to the outer edge
    F. No matter where you are, make sure you always know how to get out
    G. If you can’t keep moving by crawling in the same direction of the crowd
F 37. C 38. B 39. G 40. E
根据上文“If you are in a crowd, a first and most important thing is to make yourself familiar with your surroundings and mentally notice alternate exits.(如果你在人群中,首先也是最重要的是让自己熟悉周围的环境,并在心里注意到可供选择的出口)”可知,上文提到要注意出口,本句为本段最后一句,应继续强调要找到出口,知道怎么出去。
根据后文“as panic situations can often be expected. When in danger, a few seconds can make all the difference, giving you the possibility of taking advantage of your escaping route.(因为恐慌的情况经常是可以预料到的。当遇到危险时,几秒钟就能改变一切,让你有可能利用你的逃跑路线)”可知,后文提到恐慌的情况经常是可以预料到的,说明要注意人群是否有恐慌的气氛。故C选项“注意人群的总体气氛”符合语境。故选C项 。
    【38题详解】
根据本段内容“If you find yourself in the middle of a moving crowd do not fight against the pressure, do not stand still or sit down, because you could easily get trampled. Move in the same direction of the crowd keeping your hands up by your chest like a boxer — it gives you movement and protects your chest.(如果你发现自己在移动的人群中间,不要对抗压力,不要站着不动或坐下,因为你很容易被踩踏。向人群的同一个方向移动,双手举在胸前,像拳击手一样——这样可以让你移动,保护你的胸部)”可知,本段的主旨是行动要和人群同一个方向,即与人群同步。故B选项“与人群同步”符合语境,由总括本段的作用。故选B项。
    【39题详解】
根据上文“If you fall, get up quickly.(如果你跌倒了,迅速站起来)”以及后文“or if that is not possible, then cover your head with your arms and curl up. Do not lay on your stomach or back, as this dangerously exposes your lungs).(如果这样做不可能,那就用手臂遮住头部,蜷缩成胎儿的姿势,不要趴在地上或仰卧着,因为这样会暴露肺部,非常危险)”可知,本句是在假设跌倒站不起来的情况,该如何做。
根据上文“After you’re pushed forward, like in a wave there’s a quiet period. In that period is your chance to move, and the way you move is on a diagonal(对角) , between pockets of people. There’s always space between people. A couple of steps sideways, another wave surge, then another couple of steps in the next quiet period.(当你向前推进时,就像海浪一样,会有片刻的平静。在这段静默中,你有机会移动,你移动的方式是在一个对角线上,在人群之间。人与人之间总是有距离的。向旁边走了几步,又来了一波浪,然后又走了几步,进入下一个平静期)”可知,本句旨在说明提到利用平静期以及对角线行动来慢慢移动到人群的外围,故E选项“你沿着那条路一直走到外围”符合语境。故选E项。

Hank’s big adventure started last November 6. Delores Bushong his 75-year-old owner, had just returned from a farmers market when she realized Hank hadn’t come in for his midday snack. She called his name in alleys and streets around her home. As it got dark, she began to worry. Then she heard mewling, looked up and spotted Hank, seated on a branch near the top of a neighbor’s tree.
Bushong believes Hank got under a fence and then became scared by some dogs. The more scared he got, the higher he climbed.
“Cats have an amazing ability to climb up trees, but actually they aren’t that good at climbing down,” said Dan Eramo, director of field services for the Humane Rescue Alliance (HRA).
Bushong, now worried about getting Hank down, asked the HRA to take the lead, but it was no easy task. HRA called the fire department, but it refused to help, citing safety concerns. Then Bushong called a construction company to ask about renting scaffolding(脚手架) but was told she would have to book the equipment 48 days in advance.
Next she reached out of a local tree company, Casey Trees, where volunteers helping with planting and trimming. But the crew that came out analyzed Hank’s predicament(困境)and said it wasn’t safe for a person to go up into the tree because the branches weren’t strong.
Bushong was quite upset. “To realize something you love is in trouble and you personally can’t do anything about it is very frustrating,” she said.
Paragraph1. Seeing this, the neighbors came to Hank’s rescue.

Paragraph 1: Seeing this, the neighbors came to Hank’s rescue. One neighbor donated a can of sardines, hoping it might attracted the hungry cat to come down. Another neighbor brought a tall ladder, which unfortunately proved still too short. With Hank stuck in the tree for a prolonged time, Bushong’s worries mounted. When Lydia whose tree Hank had climbed, talked about how her sister got her cat down from a tree, Bushong decided to try it at once. Together they produced a system of pulleys(滑轮)and lifted a basket with some of Hank’s favorite things up to him. To their excitement Hank jumped into it.
Paragraph 2: Once on the ground Bushong picked Hank into her arms holding him close. Hank was still trembling with fear. The kind neighbor offered the can of sardines. The starving cat licked the can clean and then settled comfortably in his owner’s arms purring enthusiastically. Seeing this, all the neighbors present smiled with relief. Bushong said, with gratitude welling up in her heart, “I feel good living in such a friendly neighborhood. It gave me hope when Hank was in trouble.” Hanks adventure taught us a lesson about neighbors helping neighbors.
Paragraph 1: Seeing this, the neighbors came to Hank’s rescue. They comforted Bushong and started their rescue action. One neighbor hit a basin to make some noise attracting the Hank’s attention. Another one brought a ladder but proved to be a failure since the tree was too tall. Everyone seemed at wits’ end. Suddenly a tower crane which belonged to a construction company nearby came to rescue. The driver lifted the crane to get close to Hank. Scared but trying to be rescued, Hank finally jumped into it and then was transported to the ground.
Paragraph 2: Once on the ground, Bushong picked Hank into her arms holding him close. She was still upset for the previous scene. Only holding her beloved pet in arms could she really be comforted. With teary eyes, she expressed her gratitude to the people who attended the rescue work. All cheered. They clapped their hands for this great rescue. With all the efforts from the neighbors, Hank was successfully rescued. The victory belonged to the whole community. It was their help and love that made the rescue a miracle of humanity.
