Precollege on-campus summer courses and COVID-19
In the event, if we are not able to offer in-person, on-campus courses due to COVID-19 restrictions, as many courses as possible will be converted (改变) to online offerings and you’ll have the following options:
1. If your on-campus course is converted to an online course, you may automatically register for it at a reduced charge that reflects only academic (per credit), not residential fees.
2. If you prefer, or if your on-campus course is not converted to an online offering, you may select a course from the list of previously scheduled online courses
3. You may contact us to withdraw and request a full refund (退款), minus the application fee.
While we know there is no replacement for our on-campus, residential experience, the good news is that all online courses are regular Cornell classes that give you a chance to study with Cornell faculty (学院), work alongside undergraduates, earn college credits, and get a head start on preparing for college applications.

In my mind, the effect that experience had on me lasted forever. I was determined to learn swimming at the age of ten. There was a pool, at the K. P.L.B., offering the opportunity. My mother constantly warned against it, and bore fresh in my mind the details of each drowning in the river. But the K. P.L.B. pool was safe.
My fear of water started from childhood. It began when I was four years old and father took me to the beach. There the huge waves knocked me down and swept over me.
The K. P.L.B. pool was quiet. I was afraid of going in all alone, so I sat on the side of the pool to wait for others. Then came a big boy. He yelled, "Hi, Skinny! How'd you like to be ducked?" With that he picked me up and threw me into the deep end. I landed in a sitting position, and swallowed water. But I was not frightened out of my wits-when my feet hit the bottom, I would make a big jump, come out of the surface. It seemed a long way down. I gathered all my strength when I landed and made what I thought was a great spring upwards. Then I opened my eyes and saw nothing bur water. I tried to yell but no sound came out. I went down, down, endlessly.
When I came to consciousness, I found myself on the bed in the hospital.
I never went back to the pool. I avoided water whenever I could. This misadventure stayed with me as the years rolled by. It deprived me of the joy of boating and swimming. Finally, I decided to get an instructor. Piece by piece, I practiced hard and finally he built a swimmer. Several months later, the instructor was finished, but I was not. Sometimes the terror would return.
This went on till July. I swam across the Lake Wentworth. Only once did the terror return. When I was in the middle of the lake, I put my face under and saw nothing but bottomless water. I laughed and said, "Well, Mr. Terror, what do you think you can do to me?"
I had conquered my fear of water.
4. Why was the author frightened of water originally?
A. His skill in swimming was very poor.
B. An experience of an outing to the beach affected him.
C. He had an unpleasant memory of the pool at the age of four
D. His mother warmed him about the danger of being drowned
5. Which of the following is right about the author's experience in the K.P.L.B. pool?
A. The experience made him aware that the pool was safe
B. While he had no skill in swimming, he struggled to go upwards.
C. When he was thrown into water, he knew someone would save him.
D. The big boy eagerly wanted to help him to conquer the fear of water.
6. Which of the following can be used to describe the author?
A. Diligent and cautious. B. Determined and far-sighted.
C. Dependable and adaptable. D. Demanding and courageous.
7. What does the author try to tell us?
A. A fall into a pit, a gain in your wit. B. Do one thing at a time, and do well.
C. Deed divides beings into lower and higher ones. D. Success always comes from daring to challenge.

As a popular subject of study among evolutionary ecologists, three-spined stickleback (三刺鱼) is known for their different shapes, sizes, and behaviors-they can even live in both seawater and freshwater, and under a wide range of temperatures. But what makes that?
The researchers tracked six populations of the fish before and after seasonal changes to their environment, using genome sequencing. Seasonal changes result in great changes in habitat structure and balance of salt and freshwater, and only those fish able to tolerate these rapid changes survive into the next season.
“After comparing these changes, we find that they probably resemble the habitat shits experienced by stickleback populations during the past 10,000 years.” says Professor Barrett “We hope to gain insight into the genetic changes that may have resulted from natural selection long in the past.”
Remarkably, the researchers discovered the evidence of genetic changes driven by the seasonal shifts in habitats, which mirrored the differences found between long-established freshwater and saltwater populations. “These genetic changes occurred in independent populations over a single season, highlighting just how quickly the effects of natural selection can be detected,” says Professor Barrett, "The findings suggest that we may be able to use the genetic differences to predict how populations may adapt to environment."
The research emphasizes the importance of studying species in dynamic environments to gain a better understanding of how natural selection operates. In further research they plan to investigate how repeatable the observed genetic changes are, by testing whether they show up year after year. Doing so would demonstrate their ability to reliably forecast the evolutionary future of these populations.
8. Why is stickleback a popular subject of study?
A. The fish is adaptable to different living conditions.
B Seasonal changes make little difference to the fish.
C. Six populations of the fish are worthy to being tracked
D. Ecologists can study a wide range of temperatures by tracking the fish.
9. In which way did researchers get the findings?
A. By explaining a concept. B. By analyzing the data.
C. By studying a specific case. D. By making comparisons.
10. What's the significance of the study?
A. It will arouse people's awareness of protecting stickleback.
B. It makes researchers pay more attention to genetic changes
C. It helps us gain deep insight into the law of natural selection.
D. It proves that stickleback is a really popular subject of study
11. What's the purpose of studying the repetition of the genetic changes?
A. To study species in dynamic environments. B. To test the reliability of the present discoveries.
C. To predict the evolutionary future of certain species. D. To know the frequency of certain species' appearance.
D
I've worked as a social media influencer for four years and have experienced the many positive aspects of this industry. My travels inspired an American woman to take her first solo (独自的) trip to the Middle East, which is a valuable experience. But I've also seen the more negative aspects, such as the emotional stress that comes from creating content with the goal of getting as many people as possible to double-tap or like our photos.
So when Instagram announced that it is beginning to test removing likes from the platform, my immediate reaction was a positive one.
Similar to the experience of the average Instagram user, viewing likes creates an incredible point of comparison among influencers. It shifts the focus away from providing value to constantly comparing yourself to other creators. The removal of likes pushes influencers to create valuable content and start meaningful conversations with their followers rather than post content only for the purpose of generating likes. It is a shift in a positive direction and an answer to the call for social platforms to take responsibility for the impact their apps have on users' mental health.
If Instagram does away with likes altogether, the way brands will partner with influencers will also likely change. The influencer marketing industry is still fairly new and most brands make quick judgments according to the practice — using only the ratio (比率) of the number of followers to the number of likes without looking at much else. If like counts are no longer visible, brands will need to take a deeper dive into a creator's content and into the quality of the conversations they are having with their audience. This is the true test of an influencer's impact and ultimately, of the return on investment a brand can expect. This change will force brands to get smarter.
Instagram's test to explore removing likes reflects a larger cultural call for connection community and authenticity online. I believe it would be a welcome change that all users could appreciate.
12. Why is an American woman mentioned in paragraph 1?
A. To prove the advantage of traveling alone. B. To introduce the topic of the following part.
C. To display the benefits of modern technology. D. To tell us the favorable impact of an influencer.
13. What's the result of removing likes for influencers?
A. Consider themselves as average users. B. Turn to other social platforms for viewing.
C. Pay more attention to the quality of their content. D. Change users' habit and impact their mental health.
14. What does the author think of the practice mentioned in paragraph 4?
A. Risky. B. Reliable.
C. Inconvenient. D. Conservative.
15. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Instagram likes — Affect health? B. Instagram likes — Remove or not?
C. Instagram likes — Deserve liking! D. Instagram likes — How to get more?

Calls to stop the use of face recognition technology are growing louder, but it is already too late. Given its widespread use by tech companies and the police, a permanent roll back is impossible.
The European Commission is considering temporarily banning the use of the technology in public spaces, giving politicians in Europe time to develop measures to reduce the potential risks of face recognition systems. ____16____ Public areas make up only a small proportion of the physical spaces we inhabit.
What about the many that are privately owned, such as shops, schools and museums, in which face recognition is steadily being rolled out, sometimes without our knowledge?
Most of us now associate face recognition with CCTV cameras (闭路电视摄像机). ____17____ Facebook, for example, runs face recognition on users' photos to automatically identify them in other images on the site, which has been functioning for years. Russian search engine Yandex has a smart search function that, given one image of a face, can find pictures online of the same person even in different poses and lighting conditions.
____18____ An independent analysis of a face recognition trial by London's Metropolitan Police found 81 per cent of matches the system flagged to a watch list of suspects were incorrect. ____19____
So what is the possible solution? When we consider both the rate at which the technology is developing and its widespread use nowadays, it is crystal-clear that a ban on its use in public spaces would be too little, too late. ____20____ A set of effective rules on when and how it can be used needs to be decided quickly. Face recognition technology is here to stay; implementing a temporary ban would be the regulatory equivalent of burying our faces in the sand.
A. This applies to face recognition, as is often the case.
B. As a matter of fact, it is advancing in the online field, too.
C. What face recognition needs is strict and urgent regulation.
D. Other concerns relate to the fact that the technology is imperfect.
E. But the prohibitions are so limited that they are hardly bans at all.
F. And it's even less accurate for some minorities, which risks worsening racial issues.
G. Companies cannot let market make a final decision on the future of new technology.

A Girl with Stage Fright
It was obviously going to be one of those days. Students were preparing for a singing contest actively. Paul, a music teacher, made comments on the students' performance at the end of a rehearsal(彩排). A girl named Lisa did the poorest preparation. Paul was very annoyed and entirely frustrated with her. He doesn't recall how he closed the rehearsal, but he's sure the words he chose were not words that would lift the girl's spirits but rather satisfy his selfish need to punish her for the poor performance.
The moment Paul dismissed the students, Lisa, the very reserved freshman girl, made a path straight toward him. She looked him right in the eye and said, "I hate you!" Paul was taken aback and frightened by the passion and honesty in her voice. Though entirely shocked, he was somehow able to collect himself and stay calm. He looked her right in the eye and said, "Well, that's a shame, but it's my duty to remind you and inspire you. " She didn't react, but rather stormed away, her anger unchanged.
Several days later, they had the occasion to speak in private. Lisa asked if Paul remembered the time she told him that she hated him. How could he forget? She went on to admit quite openly and honestly that it was herself, not him, who she hated. The moment got heavy and she began to tell him of her fear and pressure when standing on the stage. She believed that no matter how well she prepared, she would perform terribly on the stage. Paul became aware that she had serious stage fright and also realized that maybe he had done something improper several days ago. Then he talked to her patiently and sincerely, hoping to help her build the confidence.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 开头已给出。
The day before the contest, she was practising for the singing competition alone.

46. Dear Peter,
I’m more than happy to tell you that the opening ceremony of Beijing Winter Olympic Games will be held on 4th Feb. 2022. So I am writing to invite you to visit Beijing at that time.
First, there will be many wonderful and fascinating performances so I am sure that we can have a beautiful time while enjoying them. Besides, it is when I am in winter holiday, so I have enough time to show you around. Most importantly, because the time of opening ceremony is coincidental during the period of our most important traditional festival---the Spring Festival, we can experience our traditional cultures and customs.
I have bought two tickets of the opening ceremony. Looking forward to meeting you!
Yours,
Li Hua
47. The day before the contest, she was practising for the singing competition alone. She thought about how to sing every key and practiced it time and time again, so that she could prepare herself well enough. At that moment, Paul came to her and told her that actually he himself was also a person with stage fright when he was young. But he believed that as long as he practiced hard, he would win. Finally, he did beat the stage fright. Hearing that, Lisa knew that she would be another Paul.
However, the next morning, when she stood on the stage, her face turned pale. Looking around, she saw Paul sitting in the audience, smiling at her. Lisa remembered what Paul told her, and she believed that she had got well prepared. Gradually, she found herself lost in singing her song and forgot all the bad feelings. After her performance, the whole audience applauded for her. She won.
