一、阅读理解

Tom Sawyer is a literary (文学) work, written in 1876 by the famous author Mark Twain. Tom Sawyer is a cute young boy who lives in the small town on the Mississippi River called St. Petersburg. The story line is simple, the book reads like a biography or a memory of a summer in Tom Sawyer’s life.
Tom Sawyer seems to be quite different from other kids such as Dennis the Menace, Malcolm in the Middle, and Calvin and Hobbs. What makes this story great is that Tom Sawyer represents (代表) everything that is great about childhood. The book is filled with Tom’s adventures (冒险) playing pirates (海盗) and war with his friend Joe Harper. Tom has a good friend, Huck Finn, whom the adults disliked but trusted to Tom. The book is filled with ideas of how the world works, such as how pirates work, that are so innocent, they could only come from a child. It is a story filled with action, adventure, creative ideas, and love.
The book is a little difficult to read at first. Personally, it takes me a little while to get used to the 19th century dialect (方言) in the book. The book would be an enjoyable reading material for people of all ages. I highly recommend (推荐) this book for those who are looking forward to feeling young again.

1970 was World Conservation (保护) Year. The United Nations wanted everyone to know that the world was in danger. They hoped something could be done.
Here is one example of the problem. At one time there were 1,300 kinds of plants, trees and flowers in Holland (荷兰) , but now only 866 are left. The others have been destroyed(毁灭) by modern people and their science. We are polluting earth, air, water and everything around us. We can’t live without these things. If things go on like this, we shall destroy ourselves.
What will happen in the future? Perhaps it’s more important to ask “What must we do?” More and more young people have known this. Many of them are helping to save our earth. For example, they plant trees. In a small town in the United States a large group of girls cleaned the banks of 11 kilometers of their river. Young people may hear about conversation through a song called “No one’s going to change our world”. It was made by Cliff Gichard and other singers. The money from it will help to conserve tigers, elephants and pandas on the earth.
( ) 1.The United Nations hoped something could be done .

About ten men in every hundred have the trouble of color blindness in some way. Women are luckier, only about one in two hundred is affected (感染) in this matter. Perhaps, after all, it is safer to be driven by a woman.
There are different kinds of color blindness. For example, a man cannot see deep red. He may think that red, orange and yellow are all shades (影子) of green. Sometimes a person can’t tell the difference between blue and green. Only a few unlucky men may see everything in shades of green— a strange world indeed.
Color blindness in human beings is a different thing to explain. In only one eye there are millions of very small things called “cones (锥状细胞) ”. These help us to see in the bright light and to tell differences between colors. There are also millions of “rods” (杆状细胞) , but these are used for seeing when it is nearly dark. They show us shapes but not colors.
Some insects have favorite colors. Mosquitoes (蚊子) like blue but do not like yellow. A red light will not attract insects, but a blue light will. Human beings also have favorite colors. Yet we are lucky. With the help of the cones in our eyes, we can see many beautiful colors by day, and with the help of the rods we can see shapes at night.
( ) 1. “Color blindness” means ______ in Chinese.
A. 盲目 B. 无色 C. 色盲
( ) 2. Some people say it’s safer to be driven by women because ________.
A. women drive more carefully B. women are better at driving than men
C. there are fewer color-blind women
( ) 3. With the help of the “cones”, we can ____.
A. tell different shapes B. tell orange from yellow C. see in the dark
( ) 4. We can attract and kill mosquitoes by using a ____ light.
A. red B. yellow C. blue
( ) 5. Which of the following sentences about color blindness is TRUE?
A. None of men can see deep red.
B. Not all of men have the same problem in recognizing colors.
C. None of men can tell the difference between blue and green.

My Favorite Song
“You are not alone, for I am here with you…” Have you ever heard of this song? It’s a soft music called “You are not alone” and it was written by Michael Jackson to show his love to his wife.
I still remember the day when I first listened to this song. It was an afternoon. When I finished my school lessons early and I wanted to hurry home, it began to rain heavily. I was really annoyed. Fortunately, there was a CD store nearby. So I rushed into the CD shop to keep away from the rain. At that time, I heard the shop playing this song. Its beautiful lyrics and peaceful tune ran into my ears and made me calm. I couldn’t wait to buy this CD and became very excited.
Since that day, I often listen to this song. It really helps me a lot in some way. When I am too excited to do anything, it will make me calm. The most important thing is that every time when I feel lonely and sad, it will encourage me and let me know there are many people staying with me. What’s more, I begin to make Michael my idol and decide to be a kind person like him. Thank you Michael, thank you for making this beautiful song “You are not alone”!
