Mount Qomolangma stands as the world’s highest mountain. At a height of 8848.86 meters, it must be free of plastics wastes, isn’t it? The answer might disappoint you.
Last year, scientists collected 11 snow samples (样本) on Qomolangma, starting from 5,300 meters all the way up to its top. They found microplastics (塑料微颗粒) in all of them. The sample with the most microplastics was collected around Base Camp. It is the place where climbers spend the most time. Scientists think the microplastics came from the clothing, tents and ropes that were used by mountaineers.
The new research was led by Imogen Napper. “I have always considered Mr. Qomolangma a pure place,” she said. “It really surprised me to find microplastics in every single snow sample.”
In 2018, plastic was discovered at the Mariana Trench, the deepest point on earth. It is now clear that no place on our planet is safe from plastic pollution.
Millions of tons of plastics are thrown into the natural environment every year. Over time, plastic waste breaks down into microplastics. Microplastic pollution is less than 5mm in size. It is too small to be picked up. Plastic waste carries harmful substances (物质). Wild animals suffer as they mistake the waste for food. People also take in microplastics through food and water, and breathe them in. It is still unknown how microplastics may influence human health.
Napper said it was time to care for our planet. It was important to reduce, reuse and recycle plastic waste, she added. Besides, many microplastics come from clothing made of unnatural materials. Napper said a focus (重点) on better materials was needed. Whenever possible, we should use natural material such as cotton.

A. They can not be picked up easily.
B. They do no harm to human beings.
C. They can break down into smaller ones.
30. According to the passage, how can we care for the earth?
A. By dealing with plastic waste scientifically.
B. By giving up unnatural materials forever.
C. By cutting down products of cotton greatly.

Human memory is not very dependable, it may fail you when you need it. We depend on both our short-term (短期的) and long-term memory, but our memory gets worse with time.
Human forgetting follows a pattern called Ebbinghaus forgetting curve (艾宾浩斯遗忘曲线). Research shows that within just one hour if nothing is done with the new information you learn, you will forget about 56% of it. After 24 hours, nearly 67% will be forgotten. If that information is not used in the next 6 days, up to 75% of it could be lost. After six days, the speed of forgetting slows down again.
But sometimes the brain forgets on purpose. “Without forgetting, we would have no memory at all,” says Oliver Hardt, who studies memory and forgetting at McGill University in Montreal. “Forgetting serves as a filter (过滤器),” he adds. “It filters out the things that the brain considers unimportant.”
Memory can change over time. However, you can change the forgetting curve to keep more memory. One great way to do this is to make your brain believe that the information you are learning matters.
In a report that looks at how we forget, the writers argue that when you review what you learned or saw not long ago, you send a big signal (信号) to your brain to hold onto that information.
Reviewing what you want to keep a couple of times gives you a good start at overcoming (克服) the forgetting curve. Another way to avoid forgetting is the 50/50 rule. Spend 50% of your time learning anything new and the rest of your time sharing or explaining what you have learned to others.
Nowadays, our brains are busier than before since all kinds of information are around us. And the brain is continuously busy deciding what to keep and what to forget. If you want to improve your memory, take control of the information process and review the new information from time to time.
31.Which of the following chart shows the forgetting curve correctly?
A. B. C.
32.Paragraph 3 shows that forgetting on purpose is ________ to memory.
A. harmful B. helpful C. thankful
33.To keep more memory, you can ________.
A. make yourself believe what you are learning is very important
B. review something you learnt or saw after a long time
C. Spend most of your time learning new information
34.What can be inferred (推断) from the passage?
A. The Information which the brain considers unimportant will be remembered easily.
B. Spending two hours reading a book and two hours sharing it helps avoid forgetting.
C. The busier your brains are, the more information you can keep in your mind!
35.What is the best title of this passage?
A. Long-term Memory or Short-term Memory?
B. Forgetting Curve-Can People Overcome It?
C. Do Humans Understand What Memory Is?

第一节 阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
Pandas are not only a national treasure, but are loved around the world. Last August, a very large panda baby was born at a zoo in the US. It was given the name Xiao Qi Ji. The choice was the result of a five-day online vote (投票) that drew nearly 135,000 voters in the US.
“Xiao Qi Ji’s birth proved to be quite inspiring, especially for us during COVID-19.We are connected again in the growth of our little ambassador (大使), and in our shared joy and friendship.” Chinese Ambassador to the US Cui Tiankai said. The furry black-and-white animals have played an important role in the country’s diplomacy (外交). According to the Japanese history, the practice dates back to the Tang Dynasty, when Empress Wu Zetian sent a pair of pandas to the Japanese emperor.
China restarted panda diplomacy in the 1950s when China sent two pandas to the Moscow Zoo. By 1982, China had given 23 pandas to nine different countries. However, most of them have died. China stopped giving away pandas in the early 1980s. Instead, the animals are lent to other countries. In general, they are to be returned to China after 10 years.
The pandas’ eating habits is an important reason why these cute “diplomats” (someone whose work is diplomacy) can’t continue to be alive in other countries. They live on bamboo shoots. Adult big pandas eat about 40 kilograms of bamboo daily. It takes 10 years for a new crop of bamboo to grow up, and many foreign countries do not have an environment suitable for bamboo growth. This means they have to buy some food from other countries. In August, Calgary Zoo in Canada announced that they couldn’t provide enough fresh bamboo for pandas because of COVID-19, so they had to send two large pandas back to China.
But countries are still trying their best to improve this special type of diplomacy and help save the panda through the knowledge exchange.
66.How did Americans choose the baby panada’s name?
67.How did people feel about Xiao Qi Ji’s birth according to Cui Tiankai?
68.Can foreign countries now keep pandas as they wish?
69.Why is it hard for pandas to remain alive in foreign countries for a long time?
70.What are pandas’ roles in keeping good relations between China and other countries?
