If the water cntains certain chemicals used in bmbs, the tiny sensrs in the leaves make the nan-tubes, which, alng with the sensrs, were placed int the spinach plant befre by the scientists, prduce a slightly special kind f light. By watching the plant cnstantly using a camera attached t a cheap cmputer ,the scientists set up a system that can send a warning email if chemicals frm explsives are fund in the water.
The cmputer the scientists used is abut the size f a playing card. They say that in the future, their system culd even use a cell phne with its camera changed slightly. Internatinal demand fr black rhincers hrn has seen the animals killed relentlessly fr decades in cuntries such as Namibia, Zimbabwe and Suth Africa. In 1960 there were an estimated 100,000 left, and by 1995 fewer than 2,500 remained. Cnservatin effrts have brught the number up t arund 5,600 tday - but the species is still critically endangered, and paching (偷猎)is amng its biggest threats.
Scientists have wrked t prtect these rare creatures by tracking them with GPS devices strapped t their necks r ankles r implanted in their hrns. The resulting data let researchers mnitr the rhins' numbers and when they enter paching htspts. But the devices can fail, and drugging the animals t attach them may cause harm.
A recent study describes a new tracking technlgy that uses smartphnes t recrd rhin ftprints. Called the ftprint-identificatin technique (FIT), this system includes sftware that can analyze the animals’ mvements frm a distance t help keep them safe frm pachers.
The idea came frm wrking with lcal trackers in Zimbabwe. These ftprint-reading experts can identify individual black rhins frm the shape f their feet and, when visible, the impressins left by cracks in the animals’ heel pads (爪垫), which are as distinctive as a human fingerprint. "We prbably wuldn't even have lked at the ftprints in the first place if we didn't have indigenus trackers," says Sky Alibhai, c-funder f cnservatin rganizatin WildTrack.
T use the system, scientists gather rhin ftprint images with a smartphne applicatin and uplad the pictures t a glbal database. FIT sftware analysis can then identify the individual animal and determine its age and sex with up t 99 percent accuracy. Researchers can als estimate the number f black rhins in an area and watch their mvements.
“I think this is great fr mnitring animals and cunting individuals,” says Ciska Scheijen, a cnservatin scientist. Scheijen wnders abut FIT's perfrmance during the rainy seasn, when ftprints are ften indistinct, and if it can track larger herds as ppsed t the 35 dd individuals this study mnitred.

34.What is Ciska Scheijen's attitude twards FIT?
A.Psitive.B.Uncertain.C.Disapprving.D.Objective.
35.What is the text mainly abut?
A.Black rhins are endangered due t paching.
B.A new app tracks black rhins thrugh their ftprints.
