When it rains heavily, we can say, “It’s raining cats and dogs.” Well, on December 29, 2021, the people in Texarkana, the USA, were experiencing the animal rain. It was raining fish.
On that day, a storm hit the town. It left a lot of small fish on the ground. Fish falling from the sky is an example of “animal rain”, explained the city authorities(专家), and “although it is not common”, it can happen with certain weather if the fish are light enough.

In fact, there have been similar reports of such strange weather throughout history. In 2017, people in California, the USA, saw fish falling from the clouds over a primary school. In 1921, frogs fell from the sky over a city in Canada. Fish have also fallen from the sky at least three times in the last 30 years in the town of Lajamanu, Australia.

Of course, the animals were not in the sky before they started raining but powerful waterspouts(水龙卷) swept them up. Waterspouts are tornadoes(龙卷风) that form or travel over open water. The strong wind inside them lifts water up into the clouds. At the same time, some light fish or frogs are lifted up, too. The wind carries the animals and water over the land. When the energy of the wind starts to fall, so do the animals and water. As a result—yes, you’ve guessed it—it “rains” animals.

Do you want to know something about the history of weather? Don’t look at the sky. Don’t look for old weather reports. Looking at the tree rings(年轮)is more important. Some weather reports go back only one century, but some trees can show us an exact record(记录) of the weather even further back.

　　It is clear that a tree would grow best in a climate(气候) with lots of sunlight and rainfall. It is also expected that little sunlight or rainfall would limit the growth of a tree. The change from a favourable(有利的) to an unfavourable climate can be seen by reading the tree rings in a tree trunk(树干). To find out the weather of ten years ago, count the rings of a tree trunk from the outside to the inside. If the tenth ring is far from the other rings, then we are sure that lots of sunny and rainy weather happened. If the rings are close together, then the climate was bad for the tree.

　　Studying tree rings is important not only for the history of weather, but also for the history of man. In a place of New Mexico you can find only sand—no trees and no people. However, many centuries ago a lot of people lived there. They left suddenly. Why?

A scientist studied the dead tree rings which had grown there. He decided that the people had to leave because they had cut down all the trees. Trees were used to make fires and buildings. So, after the people cut down the trees, they had to move.
