For many English learners learning to write fluently in English is much more challenging than learning to speak fluently. Even for advanced level learners, written communications can come much more slowly in English than spoken communications.

Writing in English needs to follow rules of grammar much more closely than in spoken English. For example, if someone says ‘Please borrow me your pen’ in conversation, it’s clear from the context that the speaker intended to say ‘Please lend me your pen’. In written communication, words are even more important because they lack visual context. Especially if you are working in a business setting, making mistakes can cause miscommunication which might lead to problems. In conversation, you can smile and make a good impression. With writing, all you have are your words.

Imagine if you’re at a party. You might have a conversation with someone and only understand a few words. However, because you’re in the context of a party, you can make all the mistakes you want. It doesn’t matter. Everyone is having fun. When it comes to writing, there’s not so much room for error.

Spoken English is much more spontaneous (自发的) than written English. It’s looser and mistakes don’t necessarily impact your ability to communicate clearly. In writing, it’s important to think about how to write to the intended audience. You need to understand who will be reading your writing. It takes time to figure these things out.

We expect more of what we read. We expect it to be true, entertaining or informative. When there’s an expectation, there’s pressure to perform well. With speaking, with the possible exception of giving a presentation, there’s not nearly so much pressure-unless you’re closing a business deal.

It is important when teaching written English skills - especially for business English - to be aware of the challenges that learners will face when learning to function in a written English environment

    28. According to the second paragraph, why are words more important in written communication?

     A. Because writers can only rely on words.

     B. Because grammar only applies to writing.

     C. Because written words are more expressive.

     D. Because written English involves little visual effect.

    29. In which situation is a person expected to have the most pressure?

     A. When taking part in parties.  B. When giving a presentation

     C. When having a talk with friends.  D. When hanging out with business partners.

    30. What will the author probably continue to write after the last paragraph?

     A. Tips on how to teach English writing skills.

     B. Functions of writing skills in business English.

     C. Difference between spoken and written English.

     D. Challenges people will meet in making business.

    31. What can be the best title for the text?

     A. Why Is It Easy to Speak Fluently?  B. What Contributes to a Good Writing?

     C. How Can a Person Improve His Writing?  D. Why Is Writing More Difficult than Speaking?

    D

You’re lying in bed, staring at the ceiling. Go to sleep, you tell yourself. You shut your eyes tight, force your body to relax, and wait for the pleasant sleep to come. But nothing happens. It’s 3 a. m. , and you’re still staring at the ceiling.

We have all been in this situation. Try as we might, it is nearly impossible to consciously will yourself to sleep. Sleep comes to those who let their mind wander and focus on anything other than sleep itself. Count sheep, control your breathing, listen to an audiobook (有声书), or whatever - so long as it turns your mind from wanting to sleep. This is a common example of the “law of reversed effort. “

The Law of Reversed Effort was first created by Aldous Huxley. “The harder we try with the conscious will to do something, the less we shall succeed.” Suppose, for instance, that you are learning how to ride a bike. You are told to hold the handlebars, to push off with this foot, to pedal at that speed, to hold your balance here, and so on. When riding, we know all these instructions, but we do not try to do them. They just happen. In Huxley’s words, it’s “combining relaxation with activity. “

There’s a spiritual way of viewing the “law of reversed effort” as well. It’s something that has a much longer history than Aldous Huxley -- it’s the Daoist idea of “Wu Wei.” It is to walk the path that opens up and push the door that gives. Call it fate, divine (神圣的) calling, or whatever, but Wu Wei is to stop doing what you think is right, and to let yourself be pulled by some other power. Wu Wei is the grass bending in the wind. It’s the stick riding down the river.

There are many moments in life when trying harder makes things worse. When you have a mosquito (蚊子) bite, a broken bone, or a nosebleed, you leave it be. Picking and tapping only worsen the problem. So, too, with a lot of life’s major moments.

    32. Why is the example of the failure to falling asleep mentioned in the text?

     A. To show how common sleep loss is.

     B. To introduce the Law of Reversed Effort.

     C. To recommend effective ways to get to sleep

     D. To prove the impossibility of willing ourselves to sleep.

    33. What might help us learn riding a bike according to Paragraph 3?

     A. Making reversed effort.   B. Trying our best to practice.

     C. Riding in a relaxed manner.  D. Remembering to follow instructions.

    34. Which might be an example of “Wu Wei” according to the text?

     A. Ignore a mosquito bite.

     B. Sail against a strong wind.

     C. Will yourself to sleep when suffering sleep loss.

     D. Remind yourself of instructions when riding a bike.

    35. Which can be a suitable title for the text?

     A. Wu Wei, a Daoist Idea   B. How to Deal with Sleep Loss

     C. Reversed Effort: Key to Success  D. The Harder You Try, the Harder You Fall

Caroline Knorr, the parenting editor of Common Sense Media, which evaluates content and products for families, applauded the screen time feature, noting the difficulty of getting children to put down their phones.      40      “It’s not a set-it-and-forget-it thing where parents think, “ she said. “We’re all still learning this technology, and life is very unpredictable.”

    第二节 (满分25)

     阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

It was February 16, 2019, at 8 a. m. when my girlfriend, Jessika, and I arrived at Utah’s Zion National Park. We’d traveled from our home in Mesa, Arizona, to hike the nine-mile-long Subway Trail, so named because of its amazing tunnel-shaped canyon (峡谷). Halfway through our hike, which included climbing over rocks and walking across streams, the sunshine gave way to a light snow. Soon after, we reached the red-colored walls of the Subway Trail. A small pond stood in our way, with the trail (路线) continuing on the other side. Because the pond looked shallow, we began to wade (蹚水) through, with Jessika leading the way.

About five feet from the edge, her front foot sank into the sandy bottom. Then she fell forward and both legs started to sink. I dashed to her, grabbed her under the shoulders, and pulled her out. She climbed back to shore. But now I was sinking. The mud came all the way up to my right thigh and my left calf (小腿肚). I freed my left leg but couldn’t move my right.

Jess handed me a long stick we’d picked up earlier in the hike. I put it down the side of my leg and tried to move and pull it out. Nothing. I was trapped in quicksand (流沙) .

Jessika started scooping () sand with both hands, but it was refilling faster than she could pull it out. “Don’t bother,” I told her. “You’re just wasting your energy.” While I was no longer sinking, I wasn’t getting out, either.

We couldn’t call for help because the closest rescue team was back at the trailhead, five hours away from us. I told Jessika she had to hike back and call for help. She was scared-she had only ever hiked with me and was fearful of hiking alone on a trail the National Park Service calls “very tough.” But we were out of options.

    注意:

    1. 续写词数应为150左右;

    2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

I didn’t know how long I had slept, but I woke up with my upper body slipping backward into the quicksand. I quickly planted my stick into the dry ground to stop my fall. Wet and exhausted, I couldn’t even feel my right leg. It had been hours since Jessika left, and it was getting dark. Maybe this time I wasn’t going to make it, I thought desperately to myself.

Just as I was going to give up, a flashlight shone across my eyes. It must be the rescuers! I yelled for help at once. Jessika appeared in the darkness and rushed to me in a great hurry, followed by the rescue team. They gathered around me very soon and started working. The team held me under each shoulder and tried to pull me out with the help of some tools. When they pulled, it felt as if my leg were being ripped off. Finally, I was saved out of the quicksand. Tears welling up in our eyes, Jessika and I thanked the team with all our hearts. I was trapped for so long that I thought for sure I would die. But I didn’t.

    Text 1

M: What are you drinking. Elaine?

W: This is water with lemon. I know it’s strange to drink hot water without tea or sugar, but I’ve found that there are many health benefits to this drink.

    Text 2

M: Can you give me a ride to the restaurant tonight?

W: Sorry, my car is in the repair shop, I’ll be taking the bus. You can catch it with me if you like.

    Text 3

W: Let’s get something to drink and then go see the elephants.

M: But the dolphin show starts in two minutes. I really want to see that. We can get a cup of tea afterwards.

    W: Good idea.

    Text 4

W: Are you busy tonight? You don’t work on Friday nights, right?

M: No, I don’t. But I’ll be babysitting my niece until six. Why?

W: Well. I’d love to go dancing. Do you want to join me?

    Text 5

W: I can’t solve this difficult problem! I’ve been working on it for three hours.

M: Maybe it’s time for you to take a break and go back to it later.

W: I think you are right.

    Text 6

W: Hello, can you fix my bicycle?

M: Hi! I think so, What’s wrong with it?

W: I don’t know, but one of the wheels is broken.

M: Did you fall off your bicycle?

W: Yes, I did. But I wasn’t going very fast.

    M: I hope you weren’t hurt!

W: No, I am fine. I just hope my bicycle still works.

M: Let me see. Yes, it’s OK. The front wheel is just, out of shape. I can fix that for you while you wait.

    W: Thank you very much.

W: Dad. , what will we have for supper?

M: I don’t know. Maybe fried eggs, chicken soup and. .

W: Oh, no. We’ve had the same thing ever since Mom left, I am really tired of it.

M: I’m sorry. But that’s the only thing I can cook. What do you want to have then?

W: I do wish Mom was back. Why don’t we eat out for a change?

M: Oh, that’s a good idea. I like Kentucky Fried Chicken very much.

W: Dad, you always talk about fried chicken. Let’s have something different. Let’s go to McDonald’s this time.

    M: OK, then. You’ll drive, won’t you?

W: No. I’m a bit tired today. You drive, please.

M: OK. I hope your Mom will be back soon. . Ah, here we are.

W: Dad, what would you like to have? I’d like a hamburger.

M: I want one, too. And some fries?

W: Yeah. And a Coke. an ice-cream, and an apple pie.

M: OK. You go and find the seats.

    Text 8

W: The trouble with education, I think, lies with the teachers, I think they’re serious in teaching knowledge but pay less attention to develop students’ ability to create.

M: That’s partly true. There is too much teaching but little time left for students to cultivate their imagination. As a result the students are so busy studying for exams that they have no time to learn how to live in the society.

W: What do you mean by saying “partly true”?

M: Mm, after thinking this matter twice. I find it’s not the teachers who are willing to do so.

    W: Really?

M: As a matter of fact, the teachers want to develop the students’ ability to create but the content of the examination does not include this kind of ability.

    W: Explain your point, please.

M: The students with creative ability are not sure to get high marks in the examinations while students without creative ability can get high marks by reciting the contents to be checked in the examination.

W: I see. You mean it is the exam system that is to blame, not the teachers.

    M: Yes. That’s the point.

    Text 9

M: How did you find Cambridge when you first arrived?

W: Well. I like it. I think the city is very beautiful.

M: What about your guest house? Was that OK?

W: Yes, OK. At first I stayed with a family for three months. They were very kind to me but they had three young children and I found it difficult to study.

    M: Right, I see.

W: So after three months I moved out and now I live with two other students in a student house. It’s much cheaper and we like it there.

M: Good, and what about your studies? What are you studying?

    W: I’m doing computing.

M: Computing? I see. Um, apart from the language difficulties, how have you found the course?

W: Well. The main difficulty for me is getting time on the computers in the computer room. It’s always busy and this makes it very hard to do my practical work.

M: Can you reserve time in the computer room?

W: No, but it would certainly help if we could reserve computer time.

    M. Yes. I’ll look into that and see if something can be done to improve things over there.

George Stephenson is well-known as the builder of the first public railway in the world and he is called the “Father of Railways”. But few people know something about his private life. George was born in 1781 and he was the second child of Robert and Mabel. They were very poor and the parents couldn’t read or write. Robert worked hard, but he could not support his family. How could he get the money to send George to school? As a result, George had to work when he was a small child. George Stephenson was diligent and he liked to learn useful knowledge because he knew education could make a difference. Later George paid to study at a night school to learn reading. writing and arithmetic. He worked and studied very hard. At 17, George became an engineman at a local coal mine. After that George made good use of every chance to learn knowledge about enginery and further more about how to build machinery. After a few years’ hard work George became an expert in steam-driven machinery and later became the “Father of Railways”.
