When Im in Italy, I generally only eat Italian food. I doubt whether theres another country in Europe that has food that can keep me coming back for more.

To eat well in Italy, finding the right restaurant is essential. I appreciate personality-driven restaurants, run by people keen (热衷的) to share their love of good cooking, and places serving family recipes. Signs of a good restaurant include a low-rent location, lots of locals, and a small, handwritten menu in one language. The menu is small because theyre only selling everything theyre cooking; its handwritten because its shaped by what is fresh today in the market; and its in one language because they mostly serve locals.

For a fast and cheap lunch, I look for Italian food in corner delis (熟食店): either a rosticceria, specializing in roasted meats and antipasti (开胃食物), or a hot table bar a cafeteria offering a buffet of meat and vegetables. Another option is to drop by a neighborhood grocery store to pick up some cold cuts, cheeses, and other foods for a picnic.

Italians tend to spend a long time on each course, and dinner is the evenings entertainment. For example, when you have a full-blown Italian dinner in a restaurant, you dont get out until midnight; a three-hour meal is common. Waiters often provide lots of drinks that seem designed to keep you from leaving. When you want the bill, youll have to ask for it. Toeat and run is seen as a lost opportunity.

A couple of years ago, I sat down at my favorite place in Verona, Enoteca Can Grande, with my friend and guide Franklin. We let the chef, Giuliano bring us whatever he wanted. Just after the antipasti arrived, Franklins wife phoned him and said. Dont eat too much cheese or dessert. Later Franklin, who was not thin, surveyed our table. Sighing, he said, The foods are so plentiful but I can eat few.

    Thats a pity, I said.

I enjoyed the food for three hours and he watched me eating for three hours. Eating in Verona was really an amazing experience.

    24. What does the author want to show in Paragraph 1?

    25. Where does the author like eating while in Italy?

    A. At a restaurant at a high-rent location.

    B. At a restaurant that locals visit frequently.

    C. At a place where waiters don’t just speak Italian.

    D. At a place which provides various food.

    26. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?

    A. Ways to eat simply and cheaply in Italy.

    B. Places to have a picnic in Italy.

Along with soccer, basketball is a global sport. As you read this. young people somewhere in the world are happily passing, dribbling (运球) and shooting. Its enormous fun and a joyful way to spend time with others.

Basketball is a game for everyone. Unlike golf or tennis. it doesnt require great wealth or a lot of space to play. After all, not many people have a golf course-sized backyard, and tennis equipment is expensive. Basketball, by contrast, just needs a wall with a hoop and a ball.

So after its invention by Canadian-American physical educator James Naismith in 1891, the sport took off within US citizens, who quickly became attracted to the game because it suited their circumstances. Today, 127 years later, basketball remains one of the most popular sports in the US, and the National Basketball Association (NBA) has an increasing appeal for fans around the world.

The success of basketball as global phenomenon is undoubtedly related to the way African-Americans play the game. The basketball court reflected some of the major cultural shifts in America, such as from forbidding African-Americans to play basketball to allowing them to play in the NBA,the LIVESTRONG website noted.

From the 1950s onwards, segregation (隔离) rules, which had prohibited African-Americans from playing basketball in NBA games, were no longer used in the US. In 1950, when Earl Lloyd started to play for the Washington Capitols, things began to change. Since then, most of the greats of the game have been African-Americans, like Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Kobe Bryant and LeBron James.

It’s not difficult to see that there’s a strong link between political liberation and basketball. Something of this is expressed in a quote from the US author John Edgar Wideman. He makes a connection between basketball and hope: “When it’s played the way it’s supposed to be played, basketball happens in the air; flying, floating, raised above the floor, letting the oppressed (受压制的) people of this earth imagine themselves in their dreams.

    28. What advantage does basketball have over golf or tennis, according to the author?

    A. It can be played everywhere. B. It doesn’t cost much.

    C. It doesn’t require too much skill. D. It interests almost everyone.

    29. What can we learn about basketball from Paragraph 3?

    A. The sport was created by a PE teacher.

    B. The sport was not popular with people at first.

    C. Its rules have been changed a lot to suit new circumstances.

    D. The NBA, with a history of 127 Years, attracts people worldwide

    30. The main purpose of Paragraph 5 is to ______.

    A. explain the rules of NBA games in the 1950s

    B. stress the success African—Americans in basketball

    C. prove the popularity of basketball among African—Americans

    D. show how racial integration took place in basketball

    31. What do John Edgar Widemans words mean?

    A. Basketball is sometimes a useful tool for politicians.

    B. American people usually have a basketball dream.

    C. Basketball stands for the freedom and hopes of people.

    D. Political oppression is a serious problem in the US.

    D

Any foreigner who has tried to learn Chinese can tell how hard it is to master the tones required to speak and understand. And anyone who has tried to learn to play the violin or other instruments can report similar challenges.

Now researchers have found that people with musical training have an easier time learning Chinese. Writing in the online edition of Nature Neuroscience, researchers from Northwestern University say that both skills draw on the same parts of the brain that help people discover changes in pitch (音调).

One of the studys authors, Nina Kraus, said the findings suggested that studying musicactually tunes our sensory system. This means that schools that want children to do well in languages should hesitate before cutting music programs, Dr. Kraus said. She said music training might also help children with language problems.

Mandarin (普通话) speakers have been shown to have a more complex encoding (编码) of pitch patterns in their brains than English speakers do. This is because in Mandarin and other Asian languages, pitch plays a central role. A single syllable word can have several meanings depending on how it is intoned.

For this study, the researchers looked at 20 non Chinese speaking volunteers, half with no musical background and half who have studied an instrument for at least six years.

As they were shown a movie, the volunteers also heard an audio tape of the Mandarin word mi in three of its meanings: squint, bewilder and rice. The researchers recorded activities in their brain stems to see how well they were processing the sounds. Those with a music background showed much more brain activities in response to the Chinese sounds.

The lead author of the study, Patrick C. M. Wong, said it might work both ways. It appears that native speakers of tonal languages may do better at learning instruments.

    32. When learning Chinese, a foreigner will find ______.

    A. he has a difficult time learning music at the same time

    B. he has an easier time learning music at the same time

    C. it is hard to master the tones required to speak and understand

    D. it is easy to use the brain to help him discover changes in pitch

    33. Why does Chinese learning have something to do with music training?

    A. Because there is the same difficulty in learning Chinese and music.

    B. Because skills to learn the two make use of the same parts of the brain.

    C. Because music training might help people with language study.

    D. Because people who do well in Chinese study do well in music.

    34. The underlined word "intoned" in the fourth paragraph can be replaced by the word “______

    A. created  B. spelled C. seemed  D. pronounced

    35. What would be the best title for this passage?

    A. Mandarin Speakers Are Smarter than English Speakers

    B. Skilled Ear for Music May Help Language Study

    C. Pitch Plays a Central Role in Chinese Learning

    D. Schools Need to Develop Music Programs

Do you usually feel youre working hard but still cant reach your study goals? Here are some quick tips to help you study better.

Study with a partner or in groups

Rather than living in a cave with your nose in the books all day, grab a friend from your class and study with him.    36    Actively engaging the information with someone else not only helps you to learn, but makes studying more enjoyable.

    Step into your teacher’s shoes

Ask yourself If I were the teacher, what would I put on the test?    37    Learn from them for the next test. Remember, teachers dont expect you to memorize every single detail, just the ones they feel are important. Its your job to figure out what that is.

    Paint bigger pictures

38    It’s harder to remember each piece of a puzzle individually than it is to recall the completed picture.

Try this exercise: memorize these numbers in order 6...2...9...1...3…8…4…0…5.

Now try to memorize these numbers 629….138….405

The bottom is easier right? It is the same order of numbers, but put into the context of bigger numbers. Creating context gives information meaning and also turns learning into an experience rather than simple absorption.

       39

A hungry brain is an ineffective one. Your brain needs the proper nutrients to keep it going. Because of this, what you eat and drink also plays a huge role in how sharp your brain is. Healthy foods provide nutrients to your brain cells to keep them energized

Take breaks to relax your brain

Your brain is like a muscle.    40    But it can also tire if you overwork it. If you divide studying into 15 to 30 minutes blocks with quick breaks in between your brain will feel refreshed, grateful and ready for the next challenge you throw at it.

    A. Feed your brain.

    B. It needs exercise to make it stronger.

    C. Relax your brain by eating and drinking

    D. If in doubt, by all means, ask your teacher.

    E. Find ways to connect what you are learning to real life or to other concepts.

    F. You have probably experienced a lot of tests and quizzes by now.

    G. Group studying helps you to engage and process the information more deeply.

    第二节(满分25)

    阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I grew up in a small town where elementary school was a ten-minute walk from my house and in an age, not so long ago, when we children could go home for lunch and find our mothers waiting. At the time, I didnt consider this to be so important, although today it certainly would be. Actually, our lunch time together in the past years had had a great influence on my life before I realized it.

Our lunch time when I was in the third grade will stay with me always. I had been picked to be the princess in the school play, and for weeks my mother had painstakingly practised my lines with me. But no matter how easily I delivered them at home, as soon as I stepped onstage, every word disappeared from my head. Finally, my teacher took me aside. She explained patiently that she needed a narrator and had written a narrators part to the play, and asked me to switch roles. Her words, kindly delivered, still hurt me, especially when I saw my part go to another girl.

I didnt tell my mother what had happened when I went home for lunch that day. But she sensed my unease, and instead of suggesting we practice my lines, she asked if I wanted to walk in the yard. It was a lovely spring day and the rose vine () was turning green. Under the huge trees, we could see yellow dandelions (蒲公英) appearing unexpectedly through the grass in bunches, as if a painter had touched our landscape with small amounts of gold. I watched my mother casually bend down by one of the bushes. I think Im going to dig up all these weeds, she said, pulling a blossom up by all its roots. From now on, well have roses in this garden. I immediately protested, But I like dandelions. All flowers are beautifuleven dandelions.

    注意:

    Dear Sir or Madam,

I am more than delighted to know that some volunteers of our school English association are needed. Im interested in this position and I am writing to apply for this position.

The reasons for my application are as follows. First of all, I have a good command of spoken English so that I can communicate well with native speakers. Whats more, so out-going and easy-going am I that I can get along well with others. I sincerely want to have the precious chance to further improve my oral English capabilities and interpersonal communication skills.

I would appreciate it if you could give me this precious chance.

    Yours,

    Li Hua

    One possible version

    Paragraph 1:

Do you mean that every flower has its own beauty? asked my mother thoughtfully. I nodded without hesitation, as if a second wasted could deprive the dandelions of their life. The same to you, she added, her voice soft. Not everyone can be a rose, and it is also an honour to be a dandelion. Knowing that my mother had realized my pain, I took off the mask that I had worn for the whole lunch time and poured out my unease heartily. I want to be the beautiful princess but now I was chosen as a narrator. She listened to me patiently and patted me on the back tenderly.

    Paragraph 2:

But you will be a beautiful narrator, Mom said. She reminded me of how fluently I could deliver my part at home. It was at that time that I understood that maybe I was more suitable for a role back stage like a narrator. From then on, I practiced my lines heart and soul with my mother at lunch time for weeks. And the performance approached ultimately. Standing backstage, nervousness came flooding in me. What encouraged me to overcome it was the inspiration from the beautiful yellow dandelions. The performance that night was eventually a big success. Hearing the thunderous applause, I took pride in my role and firmly believed that even a dandelion had its own beauty.
