A large number of India’s urban (城区的) poor kids receive little or no education. Even if they enter a formal school, their dropout rates are very high. Door Step School (DSS) aims to bridge the huge gap between these kids and education.
True to its name, Door Step School sets up a school right at the doorstep of kids who can’t get formal education due to a variety of reasons.
The team at DSS follows a direct model—they set up a classroom in any area, a footpath, construction site, or underpass, where they foresee the greatest need. They look for proper locations, and after making sure that enough resources are in place, they accept students in the area. DSS provides lessons of different levels. The organization even tries to provide classes in the local language, or whatever the students choose.
Another interesting project of DSS is a school on wheels. It uses a bus that has been changed into a classroom, which holds about 25 kids at a time.
Since it was started in 1988, Door Step School has spread from Mumbai to the neighbouring city of Pune in Maharashtra, covering a larger area and number of kids. Now DSS has a team of more than 1,000 volunteers and teachers who change more than 70,000 lives each year.
DSS doesn’t end at kids. The organisation educates parents on the importance of sending their kids to school. Its efforts have brought education to thousands of students in the last two decades. Their belief in education for all has not only changed children’s lives but also continued the fight against one of the biggest problems India faces. All children have the right to an education, and DSS is providing just that.
21.Why is the organization named “Door Step School”?
A.It is different from formal schools.
B.It is usually built near students’ houses.

D.It provides education wherever children can easily go.
22.What can we learn about the lessons provided by “Door Step School”?
A.They are better than formal school lessons.
B.They include whatever a school can provide.
C.They suit children at different levels.
D.They are easy for kids to learn by themselves.
23.What is paragraph 5 mainly about?
A.The development of Door Step School.
B.The foundation of Door Step School.
C.The management of Door Step School.
D.The future of Door Step School.

It was a cool early morning of the winter season. I was excited to start my morning walk. Every day I promised myself that I would start ‘ walking exercise ’ but it never happened. I saw so many people were engaged in this amazing habit but I could never push myself. So that day I was determined to take the golden opportunity!
I got everything ready, my shoes, socks, hand glove, and jacket, etc from the previous night. I didn’t know why 1 felt as if I were going to do some expedition (探险)! I was ready and started walking on the lonely road. The outside temperature seemed to be below 18 degrees. But I enjoyed the fresh air. Probably that day I was the only one who was walking on the road at that time. I think I was too early but anyhow I loved it!
After a few yards were covered, I felt delighted! Huge banyan trees (菩提树) were on both the roadsides. It was so calm and quiet all around except randomly the chirping (鸟鸣) sound of the little birds was repeated in the air. On one side of the road, a small pond was there. Since it was my first walking exercise, I thought to take a little rest just near the bank of the river and then continue. The sun was moving closer to the horizon scattering colors to the sky.
As the sky started shining brightly with beautiful yellow and red light like every day before the sunrise, I left that place and ended my journey furthermore. I thought to myself that the next day I would increase my exercise a little more. I turned and leisurely walked down towards my home.

B.Because no one took interest in walking here.
C.Because the expedition was very dangerous.

26.What the function of the third paragraph in the passage?
A.To lead in the main topic.
B.To show the joys of morning walking.
C.To persuade readers to take walking exercise.
D.To prove that the author wasn’t ready for the exercise.
27.What would the author probably do the next day?
A.To take a different walking route. B.To stay at home and get some rest.
C.To increase his walking exercise. D.To go camping by the lake.

More students than ever before are taking a gap year (间隔年) before going to university. It used to be called the “year off” between school and university. The gap-year phenomenon originated (起源) with the months left over to Oxbridge applicants between entrance exams in November and the start of the next academic year.
This year, 25,310 students who have accepted places in higher education institutions have put off their entry until next year, according to statistics on university entrance provided by the University and College Admissions Service (UCAS).
That is a record 14.7% increase in the number of students taking a gap year. Tony Higgins from UCAS said that the statistics are good news for everyone in higher education. “Students who take a well-planned year out are more likely to be satisfied with, and complete, their chosen course. Students who take a gap year are often more mature and responsible.” he said.
But not everyone is happy. Owain James, the president of the National Union of Students (NUS), argued that the increase is evidence of student hardship—young people are being forced into earning money before finishing their education. “New students are now aware that they are likely to leave university up to £ 15,000 in debt. It is not surprising that more and more students are taking a gap year to earn money to support their study for the degree. NUS statistics show that over 40% of students are forced to work during term time and the figure increases to 90% during vacation periods,” he said.
28.What do we learn about the gap year from the text?
A.It is flexible in length. B.It is a time for relaxation.
C.It is increasingly popular. D.It is required by universities.
29.According to Tony Higgins, students taking a gap year .
A.are better prepared for college studies
B.know a lot more about their future jobs
C.are more likely to leave university in debt
D.have a better chance to enter top universities
30.How does Owain James feel about the gap-year phenomenon?
A.He’s puzzled. B.He’s worried.
C.He’s surprised. D.He’s annoyed.
31.What would most students do on their vacation according to NUS statistics?
A.Attend additional courses. B.Make plans for the new term.
C.Earn money for their education. D.Prepare for their graduate studies.
D
Teaching is not an easy career (职业) to go into, yet it’s one of the most important careers in a culture. The future of a country depends on the quality of education that its next generation (代) receives and the character that the children develop. Even though educators are the most important part of our schools, the structure (结构) of the education system in the United States is not set up to fully support them. In fact, it often puts them in difficult situations.
In most careers, salaries (工资) are based on education, experience, and performance. Not so with teaching. In many schools, teachers aren’t paid based on their level of education or experience. Though many go into the career because of their love of teaching and working with children, being fairly rewarded for their work is a problem.
Add to the fact that many teachers have to spend their summers making enough money to support their family, so many teachers are leaving the field. A 2019 study reported that about 8% of teachers gave up the career each year. The result will soon be that there won’t be enough educators.
One of the reasons why teachers are leaving the field is that they don’t get respect in the classroom. Disrespect, in my view, is the biggest problem that our teachers face and it has got worse in recent years.
How to improve this situation? Schools should take care of teachers in them, and our teachers need more of us to support them. They need us to raise our voices for a stronger education system that supports them. They should be offered better salaries and more chances of career improvement. These will encourage more people to be teachers.
32.How does the author like the structure of the American education system?
A.It is unsatisfying. B.It is full of risks.
C.It fully supports teachers. D.It puts teachers in good situations.
33.Why do many teachers fail to relax in summer vacations?
A.They need some training in teaching.
B.They have to visit students' parents.
C.They have to look after students.
D.They need to make extra money.
34.What do the teachers need most in the author’s opinion?
A.Enough respect. B.Increase in salaries.
C.Rights to control students. D.Teaching methods.
35.What does the author advise in the last paragraph?
A.Requiring kids to work hard at school.
B.Calling for a better education system.
C.Encouraging more people to be teachers.
D.Having a better understanding of books.

第二节(满分25分)
67.阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
My Parents and I had been planning my brothers’ birthday party since the beginning of March. Johnny would be six years old in two days. My mom was going to bake a special chocolate cake. I wonder what I can do to make my brother’s birthday special.
I knew my parents had already bought a present for me to give to Johnny, but I wanted to buy him something I had chosen myself and with the money I had saved. After giving it some thoughts, I wanted to buy him the paint-by-number kit (数字涂色小套装) I had seen at the store around the corner.
I decided to empty my coin jar and see how much money I had saved. However, I was disappointed to find there was much less than I had imagined. “I only have about three dollars,” I said to myself. The set cost more than I have saved.
Suddenly a “great” idea came to me. I went into my parents’ bedroom where my dad kept loose change in a box. I carefully counted out what I needed to make up the difference. I’m sure Dad won’t mind just this once, I thought.
However, I was soon overcome by guilt (负罪感). Even though there was no one else in the bedroom, I felt like I was being watched. Mom was always telling us about the importance of honesty. Maybe my plan wasn’t such a great idea after all, I thought.
However, I ran to the store. Once I got there, I took the paint-by-number kit from the shelf.
“Can I help you, young lady?” the saleswoman asked.
“No. I’m just looking, thank you.” I said.
“That’s a really nice paint kit. We sell a lot of them and, as you can see, that’s the last one. ” she said.

66.Dear John,
I am delighted to have been admitted to senior high school and started my new school life .
Fortunately, our school has offered a range of after-class activities, such as an English speech contest and lectures by famous writers. I am really impressed by those participants in the speech contest because they speak perfect English. The lectures given by writers benefit me a lot in that they give very good advice on reading and writing for high school students. It's the first time that I have been so close to those famous writers. What interests me most are the various elective courses ranging from American TV Dramas Appreciation to Chinese Tea Culture. I take the tea culture class in which the teacher not only introduces the history of tea drinking, but also shows us how to make tea.
The future days will see me face up to challenges and make more progress. I am sure hard work will pay off. Would you tell me about your new semester? I'm looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua
67.Paragraph 1:
I nodded my head in agreement, with my mind racing. “Whether to buy or not?” I was wondering. My hungry eyes rested on the paint-by-number kit. “Could you help me keep it for a week?” I begged anxiously with my cheeks burning. Much to my surprise, he nodded his head in agreement. I turned around, walked out of the store and headed home. I slid into the bedroom, stood on my tiptoe and put back the change one by one. In the meantime, I could hear my heart pounding.
Paragraph 2:
I would just have to wait until I saved the extra money I needed. Apart from doing housework for my parents, I applied for a job in the community so that I could earn more money. In the following week, I delivered newspapers and fed pets for the neighbors from morning till night. Tired as I was, I still enjoyed myself. Having got enough money, I went to the corner store and bought the special gift. Never did my brother think that he would receive my gift. Seeing my brother was not at a loss what to do, I was floating on air.
