    Section B (20分)
Directions: Read the following four passages. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, and C. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.
    (A)
Every one needs friends. We all like to feel close to someone. It is nice to have a friend to talk, laugh and do so many things together with. Surely, there are times when we need to be alone. We don't always want people around. But we would feel lonely if we never had a friend.
No two people are the same. Sometimes friends don't get along well. That doesn't mean that they no longer like each other. Most of the time they will go on being friends. Sometimes friends move away. Then they feel very sad. We miss them very much. But we can call them and write to them. Maybe we would never see them again. And we can make new friends. It is surprising to find out how much we like new people when we get to know them. Families sometimes name their children after a close friend. Many places are named after men and women, if they are friendly to people in town. Some libraries are named this way. So are some schools. We think of these people when we go to these places.
There's more good news for people, if they have friends. These people live longer than those who don't have friends. Why? It could be that they are happier. Being happy helps you stay well. Or it could be just knowing that someone cares about you. If someone cares about you, you take better care of yourself.
    73. Which of the following is what the writer doesn't say in the passage?
    A. People are happy when their friends leave them.
B Maybe people will never see their friends after their friends move away.
    C. People can know their friends in different ways.
    D. People like their friends very much if they get to know them.
    74. Which of the following is the most probable place people name after friendly people?
    A. A house B. A room.
    C. A village D. A library
    75. This passage tells us ________.
    A. that people are all friends B. that people need friends
    C. how to get to know friends D. how to name a place

    (B)
“Everything happens for the best,” my mother said each time I faced disappointment or even depression. “If you carry on, one day something good will happen. And you’ll realize that it wouldn’t have happened if not for that previous disappointment.”
Mother was right, which I didn’t discover until after graduating from college in 1932. I had decided to try for a job in radio, then work my way up to sports announcer. I hitchhiked to Chicago and knocked on the door of every station—and got turned down every time. In one studio, a kind lady told me that in most cases big stations couldn’t risk hiring an inexperienced person. “Go out in the remote areas and find a small station that’ll give you a chance,” she said. I went back home to Dixon, Illinois.
While there were no radio-announcing jobs in Dixon, my father said Montgomery Ward had opened a store and wanted a local athlete to manage its sports department. Since Dixon was where I had played high school football, I applied. The job sounded just right for me.
But I wasn’t hired. My disappointment must have shown. “Everything happens for the best.” Mom reminded me. Dad offered me the car to hunt for jobs. I tried WOC Radio in Davenport, Iowa. The program director, a wonderful Scotsman named Peter MacArthur told me they had already hired an announcer.
As I left his office, my frustration boiled over. I asked aloud, “How can a fellow get to be a sports announcer if he can’t get a job in a radio station?” I was waiting for the elevator when I heard MacArthur calling, “What was that you said about sports? Do you know anything about football?” Then he stood me before a microphone and asked me to broadcast an imaginary game. The preceding autumn, my team had won a game in the last 20 seconds with a 65-yard run. I did a 15-minute boost to that play, and Peter told me I would be broadcasting Saturday’s game!
On my way home, as I have many times since, I thought of my mother’s words, “If you carry on, one day something good will happen. Something wouldn’t have happened if not for that previous disappointment.”
    76. We learn from the passage that ________.
    A. the frustration of the author prevented him from performing well at WOC Radio
    B. both of the author’s parents showed support when he was trying to search for a job
    C. Peter MacArthur recognized the author’s talent in broadcasting after reading his resume
    D. the author lost all his hope and courage when he was turned down by Montgomery Ward
    77. What was most likely the author’s attitude towards Peter MacArthur?
    A. He was worried that Peter wouldn’t believe in his ability.
    B. He was afraid that his loud inner claim would annoy Peter.
    C. He was angry that Peter didn’t offer him a satisfying position.
    D. He was grateful that Peter could notice his broadcasting potential.
    78. What lesson can you learn from the author’s experience in the passage?
    A. Well begun is half done. B. Prevention is better than cure.
    C. No cross, no crown. D. Rome was not built in a day.

    Dear Li Hua,
I am writing to tell you that I have known the difficulty mentioned in your last letter you had in study. Now I would like to give you some advice based on my experience on how to overcome the difficulty when learning English.
First of all, please prepare a dictionary which is useful to look up some strange words when you read something. It is unavoidable to meet some words that you don’t know. Besides, to understand how English works, you should have a good understanding of English grammars. Through a set of different rules, you can know how to connect words, phrases, and sentences. Last but not the least, you can create an atmosphere where you can practice your listening. For example, you can listen to VOA or BBC.
I hope that my advice is of use to you. I am looking forward to your reply.
    Yours,
    WangMing
