An Indiana school system is testing a new program that turns food that would normally go to waste into meals for children who need them.
As part of a pilot program, 20 students at Woodland Elementary School in Elkhart went home on Friday with an insulated (隔热的) backpack filled with eight frozen meals to help them get through the weekend. The program is just getting started, but it seems to be going well. Cafeteria staff stood up and clapped when the plan was announced. “It’s heartbreaking, you know, seeing our kids hungry and not being able to do anything about it,” said Bickel, the director of student services for Elkhart Community School.
The school partnered with Cultivate, a “food rescue” group in nearby South Bend, to prepare the meals, which include a protein (蛋白质) and a vegetable. The group comes to five Elkhart school production kitchens on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays to collect food that was prepared but not served. That food had been going into the garbage. Cultivate gets food from local restaurants, hospitals and other businesses as well. The University of Notre Dame athletic department and the South Bend Cubs league baseball team also donate unused food.
Cultivate is also running pilot programs with two South Bend schools. “It’s been a long-term mission for myself,” Cultivate co-founder Randy Z said. “I was the kid who went home with no food and didn’t eat on the weekends when I was younger.”
Randy Z is getting calls from area schools and restaurants that want to get involved and from people in other parts of the United States who want to start their own programs. “Children come back to school energized and ready to go and it improves them all across the board. It’s just a great thing,” he said.
24.What is cafeteria staff’s attitude towards the pilot program?
A.Disapproving. B.Favorable. C.Uncaring. D.Doubtful.
25.What is the third paragraph mainly about?
A.The partners of the school. B.The causes of wasted food.
C.The source of the food rescued. D.The content of the frozen meals.
26.Why is Cultivate a lasting mission for Randy Z?
A.He values education. B.He wants to save food.
C.He founded the group. D.He once suffered from hunger.
27.What can we infer about Cultivate?
A.It makes much money. B.It donates food to schools.
C.It will help more kids. D.It will start its own kitchen.

My love for libraries blossomed when I joined the public library. From the age of 8, I was allowed to walk from my home to the downtown library, housed above the police station. Once the librarian gave me my first membership card, I could enjoy a range of books, which started with Little House in the Big Woods. I was addicted instantly, and this love of libraries and reading would change my life, allowing me to one day create a safe space for high-school kids, too.
By the time I was in high school, I could read the authors that we were studying in class, including Charles Dickens, Mark Twain and Emily Bronte. During the summer months, I got caught up in Gone with the Wind.
When I studied English literature at university, I thought it was time to build my own library. For the next 40 years, I continued to collect books. Until one day, I realized that all my books had become a part of the house, like wallpaper.
Toward the end of my teaching career, I became a teacher-librarian at my old high school, where I had first learned English literature. This position enabled me to regain my love and appreciation for libraries. I had a generous budget for my classes, so I searched for novels that would interest my teenage audience and hopefully spark a love of books. Fantasy, science-fiction, graphic novels----I bought almost any type of books that my students wanted to read. I bought sofas and comfortable chairs, turning the library into a safe public space, for everyone.
In doing so, I realized that the library isn’t just a place to do research. They are, in fact, places that offer an opportunity to connect with the past, present and future. All that is required is a tiny bit of curiosity. Libraries are places that should be full of life. They help us connect to the world, and their doors must be kept open to everyone for free!
28.What inspired the author to set up a library for students?
A.Some well-known classics.
B.His early experience of reading.
C.The suggestion of a librarian.
D.The book: Little House in the Big Woods.
29.When did the author begin to build his own library?
A.In primary school. B.In high school.
C.During university years. D.After leaving college.
30.What does the author intend to tell us in paragraph 4?
A.What his career was like.
B.Where he stored his books.
C.Why school kids loved reading.
D.How he improved the school library.
31.Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A.More than just books B.Read with curiosity
C.A librarian’s life D.A private library
D
Big changes in agriculture are taking place in Singapore. The small, Southeast Asian nation is leading a farming reform.
Singapore covers 724 square kilometers of land and only one percent of that land is used for agriculture. Food production costs are higher there than the rest of Southeast Asia. As climate change and population growth threaten food supplies, the pressure is on new farmers to answer the government’s call----to grow more with less.
“Whenever I talk about food security in Singapore, I tell people not to think land----think space because you can go upwards and sideways.”said Paul Teng, an agriculture professor at Nanyang Technological University.
There are more than 30 vertical(垂直的)farms in Singapore----ones that grow up not across the land. Sustenir Agriculture is one of these businesses. Its hydroponic(水栽法的) farm grows non-native foods like cherry, tomatoes and strawberries inside buildings under artificial lighting. Then it sells the produce to local supermarkets and online stores. Sustenir raised $16 million from investors(投资人) last year. The money will be used to expand(扩大) operations in Singapore and open in Hong Kong.
However, not everyone thinks the new technology is best. Egg farmer Milliam Ho says the government should not depend so much on agriculture technology businesses. “Many of them have failed. That’s why I’m always asking the government, ‘Why don`t you invest in us old-timers?’ We are more practical,” he said. Professor Paul Teng said a problem for city’s farmers is that the high cost of the technology makes their products too pricey for many people.
32. What is the second paragraph mainly about?
A. High food production costs.
B. Reasons for changes in agriculture.
C. Agricultural technology businesses.
D. Sale expansion of food markets.
33. According to Paul Teng, what is the way to achieve food security?
A. expanding farmland upwards
B. buying more food
C. developing facilities
D. investing more money
34. What do we know about the old-timers?
A. They work on high-tech farms.
B. They benefit from pricey products.
C They need government’s support.
D. They cut down production costs.
35. What is the author’s purpose of writing this passage?
A. To criticize people’s traditional view of farming.
B. To support the growth of vertical farming in Singapore.
C. To introduce the latest development in Singapore’s agriculture.
D. To stress the importance of traditional agriculture.
