Task
I. Teaching aims and learning objectives
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
1. use the new words and phrases correctly;
2. understand how to write about a person;
3. write an article about the person who you admire most.
II. Teaching contents
1. New words and phrases: advantage, increase, development, agriculture, hunger, contribution,
production, work as, happen to, die of, be introduced into, at present
2. New structures: I think Yuan Longping is one of the greatest people that have ever lived.
In 1960, he saw people die of hunger, so he began research into hybrid rice.
Because of his achievements, rice production has been increased by 20%—30%.
That is why I admire him so much.
III. Focus of the lesson and predicted area of difficulty
1. To introduce a person’s major events, using the attributive clauses.
2. To tell the reason why I admire him or her.
IV. Teaching procedures
Step 1 Lead-in
T: In this unit, we have learnt about many great people. Tell me who they are according to the
descriptions.
T: We call him “Father of Hybrid Rice”. He is a rice scientist. He is a member of the Academy of Engineering.
【设计意图:通过对前期所学的伟人的描述让学生热身且快速回顾的同时,导入本课所要介绍的人物袁隆平;通过感动中国袁隆平短片激发学生兴趣。】
Step 2 Analyze the sample writing
1. Have a free talk
T: How much do you know about Yuan Longping?
T: What else do you want to know about him? You may ask questions about him. For example,
how old is Yuan Longping?/I want to know how old he is.
【设计意图:让学生提问关于袁隆平他们想要了解些什么,对课本内容作出初步预测,进一步激发学生学习兴趣和积极性。】
2. Learn about Yuan Longping
T: Now, please look through Part A on P32 and answer the following questions:
(1) Why do we call Yuan “Father of Hybrid Rice”?
(2) Why did he begin research into hybrid rice?
(3) Why does Amy admire him?
【设计意图:要求学生带着问题浏览袁隆平的资料,快速找到自己所需信息。】
T: Now, let’s check the answers. First, why do we call him “Father of hybrid rice”?

T: Who can help me to change this sentence using the word “so”?

T: Great! Now who can tell me why he began research into hybrid rice?

T: Do you think Yuan is a great scientist that is well worth admiring?

T: Amy admires him as well, and she gives the reason why she admires him. Can you find it?

T: Now please read these sentences loudly by yourselves!
T: So when we write, we can use clauses leading by “because” or “so” to make the sentences long.
T: Now let’s practice using “because” and “so”.
【设计意图:本环节通过对三个why问题的回答,使学生初步了解写作对象袁隆平,同时在学生回答的基础上进行了because 和so 的转换练习,灌输写作技巧:长句的写作。】
3. Improve writing skills
T: Who do you admire most? Why do you admire him/her so much? Let’s have a discussion.
First, who do you admire most? Let’s compare the two sentences. Which do you think is
better?
T: Now please talk with your partner using this sentence structure. When you talk, you can add
some information like this.
T: Why do you admire him/her most? Try to make your sentences long!
【设计意图:本环节设计了小组讨论,让学生说一说最崇拜的人物以及为什么崇拜他(她),学生有机会比较、使用各种复杂句、复合句,并学习添加适当信息使文章显得丰满,为后面的写作做铺垫。】
T: I think you can finish Amy’s article without any difficulty! Please complete Amy’s article.
T: Amy uses some good words and sentences. Please read and find them.
Step 3 Write your own article
1. Learn about the writing structure
T: How many paragraphs does Amy divide her article into? And what is each paragraph about?
T: So she divides her article into three parts: Introduction, Main body and Conclusion.
Para. 1 Introduce the person—Yuan Longping.
Para. 2 Write some detailed information about Yuan Longping.
Para. 3 Explain why Amy admires Yuan Longping.
T: What detailed information does Amy write about Yuan in Main body? You see she writes about Yuan’s date of birth, education, job, major events happened in his life, prizes and achievements.
T: Now, we have known how to write about a famous person.
【设计意图:通过对Amy作文结构的分析,由学生总结出文章层次及各层次的内容要求,做到结构清晰。】
2. Write an article about a famous person
T: It’s time for you to write an article. First, you should decide the person you want to write about. Look for information through the Internet, books or magazines. Remember to make some notes before writing.
T: With a clear structure and good expressions, Amy makes her article wonderful. When you write, you can also try to use the following conjunctions and expressions to make your article different.
Conjunctions may be used: when, because, so, so that, so … that …, moreover, however …
Expressions may be used: (1) one of the greatest people that have ever lived
(2) speak highly of …
(3) sb who fought for …
(4) at the age of …
(5) That is why I admire him most.
T: Please show your work and judge whether it is a good article by answering these questions.

V. Homework
