Task
I. Teaching aims and learning objectives
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
1. use charts to organize different ideas.
2. know how to write an introduction to a country.
3. assess each other’s articles in groups.
II. Teaching contents
1. New words and phrases: England, queen, ruler, pound, European, dollar, be made up of ….
2. New structures: The UK has always been famous for its museums.
The best time to visit the UK is from May to September because its winter is
wet and cold.
The weather changes often there.
III. Focus of the lesson and predicted area of difficulty
Teach the students how to organize different ideas by using charts.
IV. Teaching procedures
Step 1 Lead-in
T: Today, I have got an invitation from my pen-friend Amy. Do you know where the invitation comes from? Yes, it’s from the UK. Do you want to know more about the UK?

Step 2 Presentation: Amy’s chart
1. Information about the UK
(1) The full name of the UK
T: Well, Amy also sent me some special post cards. She says that the cards can help me learn more about the UK. Look at the first one. Yes, it’s a map of the UK. The UK is made up of four parts. So, the full name of the UK is very long. Can you remember it?
(2) The rulers of the UK
T: Look at the second one. Who are they? Yes, Queen Elizabeth II and her husband. In the past, kings and queens were the rulers. Both of the cards bring me some general information of the UK. They are both about the country.
(3) Buckingham Palace
T: Look at the third one. It’s a famous palace, Buckingham Palace. And as we know, it’s the home of kings and queens.
(4) The British Museum
T: Look at the fourth one. Yes, it’s a famous museum, the British Museum. We can learn a lot about the world’s culture there. It’s wonderful, isn’t it?
(5) The Lake District
T: Look at the fifth one. Yes, it’s the famous Lake District. We can see beautiful swans and other wild animals there. The UK is a good country to visit, isn’t it?
(6) Currency
T: But what should we pay attention to when we travel there? Please look at the sixth one. It shows us the local currency. Yes, people there use pounds, not RMB or dollars. Amy is thoughtful enough to offer me some useful tips.
2. Group discussion
T: What else do you know about the UK? Work in groups of four and have a discussion, and then give a presentation.
3. How to introduce a country

T: Well, a chart might help. Amy wants to introduce the UK to me. She collected some information online and made a chart. Now, let’s learn the chart to get more information.

Step 3 Presentation: Amy’s article
T: Yes, we can use a chart to organize our ideas when we write. This helps us see and understand the ideas better. With the help of the chart, Amy has written an introduction to the UK.
1. Para. 1
T: The first paragraph it tells us some general information about the UK, so we can also call the part “general introduction”. Please pay attention to some useful expressions in the part.
T: Read the follow sentences and judge True or False.
2. Para. 2
T: The second part tells us some places to visit. Exactly, it mentions some places, including palaces, museums and natural beauty, and some things we can do in these places. So we can also call the part “what to see and do”. Besides the useful expression, please pay attention to the three key words in the part.
T: Can you complete the sentences below?
3. Para. 3
T: The last part offers us some other useful information when visiting the UK. So we can also call the part “some tips or additions”. Besides the useful expressions, please pay attention to some transitions used in the part.
T: Read the third paragraph and answer some questions.

Step 5 Practice
1. Group work: Make up a chart
T: I’m glad to know that Amy will come to China soon. She will visit China with her parents this summer holiday. Can you help me to introduce China to her?

T: Now, let’s work in groups. We need to make a chart before writing. Think carefully: what can we introduce to her? We can have a discussion in groups first.

2. Write the introduction
T: Now, it’s time to write our introductions. Pay attention to the organization and key words. You can use the useful expressions given, and try to use some transitions.

3. Assess each other’s articles
T: Work in groups and assess each other’s articles according to the form below.
