I still remember that busy autumn evening as I hurried with my eldest daughter, Athena, to get to her classroom on time for parent-teacher night. We walked in and all eyes were on me. A few adults quickly quieted their kids’ whispers. A classmate yelled to my daughter, “What’s wrong with your mom’s face?”
Shocked, I started to explain my condition but my 6-year-old daughter looked at him and said, “It’s my mom’s birthmark! Don’t be rude!” I was extremely proud of how she approached that situation.
I was quite young when I realized I looked different because of my large facial birthmark. I always thought I would be alone hecause of it. Being compared to Batman’s evil Two-Face made me believe I could never find love, but I was lucky enough to meet my husband, who saw me for who I am inside.
When I had my first daughter, I was overjoyed, but I began to worry if world would judge my children. I also worried I might pass my condition onto my children; I didn’t want them to grow up feeling judged.
Unfortunately, my facial difference has impacted my children. My daughters get disinvited (取消邀请) from birthday parties or sleepovers, or I learn certain kids are no longer friends with mine after their parents saw me at school.
When my kids were young, I explained how my special purple skin was rare, and we talked about acceptance and never judging others on how they look. When my girls kiss my purple-skinned cheek, I feel “normal” around them and their unconditional love.
With time, both my daughters have become my strongest supporters. Thanks to them, I’ve begun to feel more self-confident as I try to be a good role model.
Their worldviews are similar to mine: we see the world a little differently and with a kinder, more accepting heart. As the saying goes, your daughters will grow up to be your best friends. I know that will be the case for me!
24. What happened during the parent-teacher night?
A. The writer came late.
B. Athena saved her mother from embarrassment.
C. The writer felt proud of Athena’s academic performance.
D. Some adults whispered about the writer’s face.
25. Why did the writer feel worried when she had Athena?
A. Because Athena also had a birthmark. B. Because Athena was seriously ill.
C. Because Athena felt judged. D. Because Athena might be looked down upon.
26. How does the writer feel to her daughters?
A. Critical. B. Disappointed. C. Grateful. D. Ashamed.
27. What does the writer most likely agree with?
A. Don’t judge a book by its cover. B. No pains, no gains.
C. Nothing is impossible. D. Misfortune may be an actual blessing.
C
A new device from University of Florida (UF) researchers could offer highly accurate test results for COVID-19 in 30 seconds, dramatically improving convenience for activities such as large events or air travel.
Researchers say the tests are as accurate as polymerase chain reaction tests, commonly known as PCR tests, which can take 24 hours to a few days to process. The new tests can also be offered at a fraction(小部分)of the cost, they say.
The device samples(检测)saliva(唾液)using the same kind of inexpensive strip(试纸) used for glucose(葡萄糖)testing but with a different chemical agent(药剂). The strip then sends a signal to a transistor machine, which provides a result within 30 seconds. In studies with human samples, the researchers found a 90% accuracy rate-the same as PCR tests and higher than rapid tests, which take 10 to 15 minutes for results.
“The beauty of this thing is that the time is so short,” said Fan Ren,a UF chemical engineering professor who had been studying the device for other uses prior to the pandemic(流行病).
Researchers think the small machine, which is battery powered, can one day be used to detect levels of other potential health threats, such as cancer and heart attacks, and significantly cut the costs of health care.
“The potential for the sensor is endless,” said Josephine Esquivel-Upshaw, a UF dental sciences professor and member of the research team. “It can revolutionize the way diseases are diagnosed(诊断).”
28. What’s the advantage of the new tests by using this new device compared with PCR test?
A. More accurate results and less cost.
B. More accurate and faster results.
C. Faster results and less cost.
D. More accurate results and more convenient operations(操作).
29. What does the third paragraph mainly tell us?
A. The reason for using a different chemical agent.
B. The comparison between saliva testing and glucose testing.
C. The invention of this new device.
D. The operation process of the new tests.
30. Which word can replace the underlined word in the last sentence of the last paragraph?
A. change B. prevent C. equal D. end
31. What may be the best title for the passage?
A. COVID-19 Test Results are Becoming More and More Accurate.
B. An Accurate COVID-19 Test in 30 Seconds is Coming Soon.
C. A New Device Will Make a Big Difference to Our Life.
D. The Appearance of a New Device Means the End of the Pandemic.

Most people have no idea what to do with their old drugs. Unused or expired(到期的) medicines lying around at home can get into the wrong hands, leading to accidental poisoning or drug overdose. When drugs are flushed or sent to landfill, the medicines can pollute our groundwater, rivers, and streams, threatening human and sea life.
In an effort to find a solution for drugs kept in medicine boxes or waterways, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration launched its first National Take-Back Day in September 2010. In the drug take-back program, the returned drugs are sent to medical waste incinerators (焚烧炉). However, the process of transporting and burning such waste can release green-house gas emissions that could be potentially greater than those generated if the drugs were poured into landfills.
“But take-back programs are preferred as they reduce the risk of drug misuse and the incineration effectively eliminates the entrance of these medicines into our nation’s waters,” says Tim Carroll, a spokesperson for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
Perhaps surprisingly, not all unused medicines need to be thrown away. Every year five billion dollars’ worth of unexpired medicines end up being deserted in the U. S. “We’re wasting a lot of medicines which are already paid for,“ says Anandi Law, a patient engagement specialist. “Millions of U.S. adults skip or delay getting their prescriptions filled due to high costs. We could give them to somebody else who needs it.”
Now, at least 40 states have passed legislation establishing drug donation programs that allow drug manufacturers, medical and long-term care facilities, and sometimes individuals to donate their unused drugs. For example, since its start in 2007, lowa’s program, SafeNetRx, has served more than 117,000 patients and redistributed nearly 54-million-dollar worth of medicines and supplies. Georgia’s program formally launched in 2018, and it has already filled prescriptions worth over 50 million dollars.
“All of these efforts are still relatively new,” Carroll says. “We still have a long way to go until households change their habits.”
32. What disadvantage of the drug take-back program is mentioned in paragraph 2?
A. It costs large amounts of money. B. It increases the greenhouse effect.
C. It can produce poisonous chemicals. D. It wastes lots of energy to deal with old drugs.
33. What is Tim Carroll’s attitude towards the take-back program?
A. Cautious. B. Supportive. C. Indifferent. D. Disapproving.
34. What is Anandi Law’s suggestion about unused and unexpired medicines?
A. Sending them to landfills. B. Selling them at a low price.
C. Donating them to someone in need. D. Developing technologies to recycle them.
35. What do the numbers in paragraph 5 mainly indicate?
A. The challenging task of SafeNetRx. B. The expense of recycling unused drugs.
C. The significance of health care facilities. D. The achievements of drug donation programs.

67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Andy rode slowly on his way to school, daydreaming about the fishing trip that his father had promised him. He was so busy dreaming about all the fish he would catch that he was unaware of everything else around him.
He rode along until a strange sound drew him to the present. He came to a stop and looked curiously up to the sky. What he saw shocked and terrified him. A huge swarm (一大群) of bees filled the sky like a black cloud and they seemed to be heading angrily towards him.
With no time to waste, Andy sped off in the opposite direction, riding with great speed but without knowing how to escape the swarm. With a rapidly beating heart, he sped down the rough road. As the bees came closer, his panic increased. Andy knew that he was sensitive to bee stings (蜇). The last sting had landed him in hospital and that was only one bee sting! He had been forced to lie in bed for two whole days. Suddenly, his father’s words came to him. “When you are in a tight situation, don’t panic. Use your brain and think your way out of it.”
On a nearby hill, he could see smoke waving slowly skywards from the chimney of the Nelson’s home. “Bees don’t like smoke,” he thought. “They couldn’t get into the house.” Andy raced towards the Nelson’s house, but the bees were gaining ground. Andy knew he could not reach the house in time. He estimated that the bees would catch up with him soon. But he tried his best to keep calm so that he could come up with an idea to escape from the dangerous situation. Suddenly, out of the corner of his eyes, he spotted a small dam which was often used by Mr. Nelson to irrigate ( 灌溉)his vegetable garden.

Without hesitation, Andy jumped off his bike and dived into the cool water. After holding his breath for as long as he could, Andy came up for air and noticed the bees had gone. Dragging himself out of the dam, he struggled up the hilly slope and rang the doorbell. Mr. Nelson happened to be home and seeing the tired and wet boy, the owner took him inside. After knowing what Andy had experienced, he praised the boy and rang his mother.
In no time, his mother appeared in front of him. Seeing Andy, his mother anxiously asked whether he was injured. Andy answered it was the dam that saved him. His mother laughed with relief and said he really needed that fishing break to help him recover. But Andy did not hear her. He was thinking his father’s words “When you are in a tight situation, don’t panic.” And he realized how important it was to listen to parents.

Text 1 :
W: Shall I turn off the TV since you are not watching anything?
M: Wait! I’m going to watch a special program in a minute.
Text 2 :
W: What can I do for you?
M: I’m looking for some science fiction. Do you have any?
W: Yes, we do. You’ll find them in the literature section on the top shelf.
Text 3 :
M: I guess it’s about time. Please hurry up!
W: Could I have a few more minutes to finish?
M: I’m afraid not. It’s a timed test.
Text 4 :
M: Hi, Anne. I’m not going to see the performance tonight, but John is. Do you need a ride?
W: Yeah. But Michael, do you suppose he’d mind picking me up?
M: I don’t think so.
Text 6 :
W: It’s already 9: 20. Weren’t you supposed to be here an hour ago?
M: Sorry but there was a long line of cars that couldn’t move for miles.
W: I won’t listen to your excuse any more.
W: What’s your favorite branch of science, Mike?
M: I have studied biology, chemistry and physics for seven years during secondary school. I decided that chemistry was my favorite and I wanted to do it to a higher level. I recently started my second year of university on a chemistry degree.
W: That’s cool. What are the career opportunities after graduating?
M: A college education seems to prepare most chemistry majors for research or lab work, but there are many paths that are open to a chemistry major. So I think my major leads to excellent career prospects.
Text 7 :
M: Betty, how was the concert last night?
W: It was fine. But I didn’t enjoy it because I had an argument with a person.
M: You? It’s unbelievable that you could have an argument with anybody. What happened?
W: It was a woman, with her son, about 6 years old. They sat behind me and talked all the way through the concert. It was so annoying.
M: So you argued with them?
W: No. I just told them not to talk and they nodded. But a minute later, they began talking again. The boy even kicked my seat. I felt quite uncomfortable so I turned my head and stared at them. Guess what? The woman said I should be nice to kids. Then we started to argue. What would you have done?
M: I wouldn’t have argued with her. I would have asked the security guard to remove her.
W: You’re right.
Text 8:
W: Where are you going for your holiday this year?
M: I’m going to Turkey.
W: Oh, I know Turkey very well. I used to work there as a tour guide before I came to our company.
M: Did you? How did you get into that?
W: Well, after university I wanted to work in the field of overseas development. Then I met someone who worked as a tour leader and he told me that his company needed some tour guides and that I ought to apply. I thought it was a great chance to see some new cities and countries.
M: It sounds a perfect job.
W: Well, it was and it wasn’t. Turkey was great, the scenery, the food, the people. But it wasn’t much fun knowing exactly what you would be doing, what you would be eating, even what you would be talking about every day for the next three months. It seemed my whole life was decided for me. I realized it was not what I was really into. I wanted to do something more creative and interesting. So I quit the job.
Text 9:
W: Henry, I need your advice on my job application letter.
M: OK. Let me see … Well in Britain, a photo is not expected. It’s unnecessary to include your hobbies as well, because they have nothing to do with the job you’re applying for. I can’t see here that you’ve got a driving license.
W: I didn’t mention it because almost everyone here my age has one. Do I need to put it on my letter?
M: Yes. And you’re fluent in Chinese, right?
W: Yes. I studied in Nanjing for almost two years as an exchange student. My spoken Chinese is pretty good. I know about 2,000 Chinese characters. I picked up some French while I was teaching Japanese in Paris, but I’m hardly fluent.
M: So let’s include three languages as your skills. Your educational background in Japan is fine, and so is being a teacher in Paris. Why didn’t you mention that you worked for your uncle before?
W: I only worked for a month when his office assistant was away. I did photocopying and typing mostly. But I’m not very good at typing. I was too ashamed to include it. Besides, what would happen if anyone gave me a typing test?
Text 10:
Changing how you eat is a major step towards being healthier. If you eat healthily, you will get more energy and feel better overall. Here I’d like to share with you some tips. Firstly, limit your salt intake. The recommended amount of salt is no more than 5 grams a day (1 teaspoon of salt is about 6 grams). An intake of more than the recommended amount can have negative consequences in your body and is harmful to your overall health. If you have high blood pressure or heart issues, you might need to limit your intake to below 4 grams.
Secondly, eat when you are hungry instead of when you are emotional. It’s normal to turn to food when you are alone, sad or stressed. If you want to get rid of your negative emotions, try taking a nice walk or listening to music instead of reaching for a snack. Finally, form a habit of eating breakfast. Eating breakfast helps you to stay active throughout the morning. A small breakfast is better than no breakfast.
