Here’s our reading list to make your 2022 happier, brighter and more creative.

    Disconnected and Literary Almanac

Emma Gannon’s latest book Disconnected explores how we stay human in an online world —perfect for anyone who’s starting to feel like their relationship with the internet and social media is off balance. And if you’d just like to read a little more, Francesca Beauman’s Literary Almanac will see you right through the year.

Stronger and Running Like A Girl

Poorna Bell’s Stronger is such a brilliant personal exercise story and it will have you questioning everything you know about women and strength. And the classic —Running Like A Girl —is still a hugely inspiring book that will make you want to pull your trainers on before you’ve finished chapter two.

Urban Wild and The Way Back

After two years of being stuck indoors we’re feeling the need to get back to nature. It can be tricky to know where to start, especially if you live in an urban area. Urban Wild by Helen Rook is out in February and full of positive suggestions to help you discover wildness on your doorstep. The month-by-month format is a great tool for discovery and will tell you exactly what to look out for each season. Melinda Salisbury’s The Way Back is such a lovely, gentle guide to help us find our way back to nature.

Your Story Matters and The Artist’s Way

Nikesh Shukla’s new book about writing —Your Story Matters —is out on March 17 and it’s full of writing prompts and inspiration to help you start your own stories. Julia Cameron’s classic The Artist’s Way turns 30 this year. It’s sold over 4 million copies around the world, and with exercises and ideas for weekly “artist dates” to take yourself out on, it’s exactly the book you need to unlock your creativity.

I’ve always been a bookworm. As an English Literature graduate, reading is one of the only things I feel truly qualified to do. There’s no place I’d rather be than buried in the pages of a fascinating story, absorbed into another life, another world.

Yet lots of people find it difficult to fit reading into their daily routine. Many friends and fellow book-lovers have told me: “Oh, I haven’t read a book in ages… I’m just too busy. ” Life happens: we get swept up in work and commitments and that many books piled hopefully on the bedside table lie quietly unread.

From a health perspective, regular reading maintains and builds brain cells, which can help avoid symptoms of Alzheimer’s in old age. It also helps us relax: according to a study, reading for just six minutes can reduce stress levels by 68 percent.

On an emotional level, readers “tend to empathize better with others” and “accurately predict what someone else is thinking or feeling”. “Reading is more than just devouring (吞噬) words. It is the connection that we feel with the characters... the sense of comfort and the feeling of being understood.” says bibliotherapist Bijal Shah.

We have several ways to get into a regular reading habit. Setting aside some devoted time every day —whether on your morning commute or in the bath before bed —is a good place to start. For those who find it tough to find time solely for reading, listening to audiobooks allows you to multitask. Book clubs are a perfect solution for people who like to combine reading with socializing and need a deadline to finish a book. It can also inspire you to try new kinds.

    4. What is some book-lovers’ opinion about not reading for a long time?

    A. Most books don’t appeal to them. B. Work takes up most of their time.

    C. They haven’t formed the reading habit. D. Their major in university is not literature.

    5. What can we learn about reading from the 3rd paragraph?

    A. It can cure Alzheimer. B. It helps brains function well.

C It can remove stress completely. D. It is popular with university students.

    6. What can be inferred from what Bijal Shah says?

    A. Readers can understand others better. B. Reading can help to master new words.

    C. Reading can make one feel comfortable. D. Readers can become more knowledgeable.

    7. Why does the author suggest listening to audiobooks?

    A. It can inspire readers to read other books. B. It is good for health.

    C. It doesn’t influence undertaking other work. D. It is more charming.

    C

When I was a child, I was terrified of storms, especially those violent ones that occurred in summer. Once, I was out shopping with my parents, when suddenly there was a loud noise coming from the direction of the Apennine Mountains.

As the storm got closer, lightning fell a few hundred meters from us, and hail (冰雹) whitened the streets in minutes. This was a totally new experience for me, and I ran into my father’s arms in terror. I was afraid. But I was also in awe. Like the pull of a horror movie, my fear developed into fascination as I grew older. When a thunder storm broke out at night, I would rush to my window to witness a brilliant show in the night sky. I would wait in eager anticipation, equipped with my parents’ camera, ready to try and capture a flashing moment.

An interest in storm photography arose from these youthful attempts. What once frightened me now gave me a strong rush, especially the first time lightning struck just a few meters away from me, an experience which resulted in me capturing a splendid photo of the moment. From that moment on, I realized that I absolutely had to chase storms throughout southern Italy.

The truth is that storm chasing is quite dangerous, especially to those who set out to chase storms without acknowledging the risks involved or respecting nature. Most accidents caused by lightning occur outdoors. You are most at risk in the mountains, but all large and exposed places such as a lawn (草坪) or a soccer field can also be a dangerous place during a storm, especially anywhere in the presence of water, such as the sea, beaches or outdoor pools.

One day soon I will set off to expand my storm chasing journey beyond Italy’s horizons. I would love to go to Venezuela where electrical storms are guaranteed almost all year round on the Catatumbo River and Lake Maracaibo. Maybe that will be the day that my parents finally accept the choice of my career.

    8. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?

    A. The author’s reaction during a storm.

    B. The author’ s most impressive memory.

    C. How the author got over his fear of storms.

    D. How the author developed interest in chasing storm.

    9. Which of the following places is the safest in a storm in the author’s opinion?

    A. A room in a shopping center. B. The beach near the sea.

    C. The lawn with open water. D. A path in the mountains.

    10. Why will the author go to Venezuela in the future?

    A. To enjoy the splendid scenery.

B To seek a working opportunity.

    C. To join a team that chases storms.

    D. To capture the frequent electrical storms.

    11. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?

    A. My Fear of Storms B. My Dream to Chase Storms

    C. An Opportunity to Respect Nature D. A Destination of My Life

    D

Houston may be the last place you would expect to see a tiger wandering, but private ownership and breeding (哺育) of big cats is a Texas-sized problem in the United States. While tiger ownership is banned in Houston, it is legal in most parts of Texas. In some other states, it is even easier to buy a tiger than to adopt a dog from a local animal shelter.

In America, young tigers can be purchased from the pet market, online and elsewhere. These tigers in private hands grow quickly into large and dangerous animals that few people are equipped to handle. As a result, some may end up as body parts sold on the black market, fueling the illegal wildlife trade. Tigers in the wild have a territory of at least 18and up to 1,500square kilometers. To confine (关押) them to a cage, home or backyard is unquestionably cruel.

Another thing, wild animals make for dangerous pets. A tame animal is not the same thing as a domesticated (驯养的) animal. A tiger in the house is still a tiger. It keeps all the same traits as a tiger in the wild. Tigers can pose dangers, whether they are born in a forest or in a cage. Undoubtedly, a thinly-regulated private ownership of tigers in the U.S. has created a public safety nightmare.

South Africa has approved a ban on captive-bred lion industry. Authorities worldwide are also waking up to the cruelty of breeding big cats for commercial purposes. The incident in Houston should serve as a wake-up call to ban private ownership and the breeding of big cats.

Americans should urge their government to ban the backyard breeding industry. At the same time, the most effective thing we can do is to support organizations that are working to protect tigers in their native, wild habitats.

The unfortunate truth is that the population of tigers in the wild has declined over the last century from 100, 000 to about 3,900. By some estimates, there are twice that many in captivity in America. Tigers belong to forests, grassland and valleys. They’re not supposed to be in backyards, in selfies, and certainly not in a Houston neighborhood.

    12. What does the underlined word “Texas -sized” in paragraph 1 mean?

    A. Enormous. B. Practical.

    C. Technical. D. Uncomplicated.

    13. Which is not the reason why the backyard breeding industry should be banned?

    A. It is a cruel act for wildlife.

    B. It will stimulate illegal wildlife trade.

    C. It poses a danger to the common public.

    D. It introduces trouble to the management of the pet market.

    14. How did the author draw his conclusion according to paragraph 3?

    A. By introducing a concept. B. By making comparisons.

    C. By explaining statistical data. D. By referring to a previous study.

    15. What was the author’s main purpose in writing this article?

    A. To introduce the habits of wild tigers.

    B. To call for awareness of the dangers of backyard breeding.

    C. To urge the American government to stop private ownership of tigers.

    D. To inform people of the seriousness of private tiger ownership in the U.S.

    47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

As I sat on the bus waiting to arrive at school, the sun shining, I just sat there full of excitement ready to enjoy the first day of spring. At last, the bus stopped and I started my day.

The whole day I was waiting for one thing, noon break. As the day passed by, I heard the bell rang and everyone rushed out of the door. I hurried and ate lunch just to get outside.

As soon as I was out, my close friend, Riley called me over to play basketball. We all started playing and time flew by as we heard the timekeeper yell, “10 more minutes.” From that point on, the game sped up. Score after score, the competition process was more intense. I passed it to my teammate, Austin, and he dished it back as I pulled up a shot. I felt as if the world around me were barely moving, and all I concentrated on was the ball going to the hoop (篮筐). Not knowing I was pushed back hard, I hit the ground. A huge pain entered my left ankle. I wanted to scream, but I didn’t, hearing the people around me shout for help. I just lay there as Riley came over to pick me up and Austin fetched a wheelchair from the school clinic. Both of them helped me sit on the wheelchair. It seemed like the whole school circled around me as I was being pushed away.

The moment we entered the clinic where I always felt nervous I didn’t think my ankle hurt as badly as it did just now, so I said, “I’m okay.” Then they had to send me back to class without any treatment. The rest of the day I felt my ankle swelling () up and I thought of how stupid I was to say that my ankle didn’t hurt in the clinic. “I should have gone home.” I thought to myself as I was thrown through this terrible pain. After school, I worried how to go back home.

    注意:

    1.续写词数应为150 左右;

    2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

Just then I found Riley come in with an ice pack in his hand.

As we went out, we were surprised to find Austin holding some medicinal oil.

    Labor and Students’ Growth

As is known to all, labor is a necessity for a student’s growth. At present, most students live in cities and rarely have opportunities to truly experience labor, resulting in lack of labor education. Through labor, students can cultivate correct labor viewpoint and develop labor habits, which will contribute to students’ overall development.

In my spare time, I’d like to help my parents do varieties of housework at home. Besides, I often volunteer to do some cleaning work for the elderly at nursing home.

In view of many benefits of labor to students, I suggest that we should regularly take part in a wide range of labor so that we can become well-rounded.

    47. One possible version

Just then I found Riley come in with an ice pack in his hand. From his look, I could easily read his concern, which instantly brought tears to my eyes. He asked if my ankle swelled, his voice obviously full of care and anxiety. I nodded helplessly, eyes automatically settling on my aching ankle. Handing me the ice pack, he told me it could help relieve the pain and reduce swelling at the early stage. So moved was I that I extended my heartfelt gratitude to him. He just smiled, saying that we were good friends and offering to send me home.

As we went out, we were surprised to find Austin holding some medicinal oil. “I usually use this kind of oil when I get hurt and it does work. You can have a try.” he said with sincerity. All of a sudden, I felt I was the happiest person in the world. I hugged my friends tightly, joyful tears rolling in my eyes. Blessed with such friends, I felt I had so much to be grateful for. Joking about my basketball skill, they sent me home.
