Generation gap, a story that defines every parent and child!
Nowadays we all talk of generation gap; the older generation is often heard criticizing the present generation, and the younger generation hardly bothers to give ears to what’s been taught. And all they blame at the end is “generation gap”. But what causes the gap on earth?
Difference in thinking: Whether it is about eating out, planning a holiday, choosing an entertainment source or for that matter selecting one’s clothing type, there is a huge difference that exists in the thinking of parents and kids. While parents still stick to the age old belief, the kids on the other hand swear by the latest technology.
The lifestyle: Parents support the deeply rooted traditional culture, while kids leave no chance of rebelling against the age old traditions and customs. They want to live life on their own terms and the slightest of interference from parents will make them feel insecure about their freedom. Society, morals and ethics often appear to them as threat to their free life.
Parental expectation: This is something where only the parents are responsible. Often we find parents trying to live their unfulfilled dreams through their kids, which apparently makes life a burden, hard enough for the kids to handle. Too much of expectations from parents often lead the kids to rebel when they fail to live up to them.
Lack of communication: Last but not the least, lack of proper communication is the main reason of generation gap. Communication is not just talking or asking about your child’s daily routine or the demanding of something from you. Communication is more about sharing your thoughts, ideas and at the same time trying to acknowledge and listening what others say.
    1. What will happen to the kids if their parents stick to the age old belief?
    A. Trusting modern technology. B. Rebelling against their belief.
    C. Giving ears to what’s been taught. D. Communicating with them patiently.
    2. What makes the kids feel unsafe about their freedom according to the text?
    A. Parents’ habits. B. Parents’ interference
    C. Parents’ choices. D. Parents’ support.
    3. What mainly causes the generation gap?
    A. Difference in thinking. B. The lifestyle.
    C. Parental expectation. D. Lack of communication.

根据第三段中“They want to live life on their own terms and the slightest of interference from parents will make them feel insecure about their freedom. (他们想要按照自己的意愿生活,父母的一点点干涉都会让他们对自己的自由感到不安)”可知,父母的干涉让孩子们对他们的自由感到不安全。故选B。
    【3题详解】

    B
It’s all right to cry. Really. Although it’s often seen as a sign of weakness, crying can be just what the doctor ordered for sorting through chaotic(混乱的)emotions and cheering up.
Our general disapproval of emotional expression and crying specifically stems from childhood, said Stephen Sideroff, an assistant professor. As kids, we’re often taught to restrain(抑制)our emotions. Maybe you remember being teased in elementary school for crying when you were hurt. Many of us learned there were feelings, such as anger or resentment, that we shouldn’t have or express. As children grow into adulthood, we gradually learn to regulate our feelings. So what, you might say? Who cares? But we don’t hold emotions in only our heads, Sideroff said. We store them in our bodies, too.
Holding back your feelings can hurt. “These feelings have energy,” Sideroff explained. “You (then) have to restrain them in different ways.” That interferes with natural processes and creates imbalances since the body’s need is still there. If you’re sad or hurt or angry, you need to find something to resolve that imbalance. If you don’t, you might express those imbalanced feelings in inappropriate ways—like lashing out at(猛烈抨击)your family or friends. Emotional restraint can limit our ability to experience positive feelings, such as joy and love, as well.
Generally, the three types of tears include emotional tears, which result from strong feelings such as joy or sadness. Basal tears lubricate(润滑)your eyes. Reflex tears release when dust or onion oxides annoy your eyes. Humans are the only animals who cry into adulthood and have emotional tears.
People often report feeling better after they cry. That could be because crying forces us to pay attention to what triggered(触发)us and work through our emotions and thoughts. Crying might also help in understanding what’s important to us, especially if we cry over something that upsets us unexpectedly.
    4. Which of the following is Stephen’s idea?
    A. Emotions are created by the chaos.
    B. Emotions are stored only in our heads.
    C. Emotional restraint originates from childhood.
    D. Emotional restraint develops positive feelings.
    5. What does the underlined word “resentment” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
    A. Joy. B. Bitterness. C. Satisfaction. D. Disappointment.
    6. What is the fourth paragraph mainly about?
    A. The characteristics of crying. B. The functions of tears.
    C. The classification of tears. D. The results of crying.
    7. How would the author feel about the outcome of crying?
    A. It’s doubtful. B. It’s unexpected.
    C. It’s discouraging. D. It’s beneficial.
C 5. B 6. C 7. D
根据第二段第一句“Our general disapproval of emotional expression and crying specifically stems from childhood, said Stephen Sideroff, an assistant professor.(助理教授Stephen Sideroff说,我们普遍的反对情绪化的表达和哭泣,这是从童年时期就开始的)”可知,Stephen Sideroff认为情绪抑制源于童年。
根据划线词所在句“Many of us learned there were feelings, such as anger or resentment, that we shouldn’t have or express.(我们中的许多人都知道,有些情绪,例如愤怒或怨恨,我们不应该拥有或表达)”中的“anger”可推知,划线词所表达的意思应与“愤怒”为同类词,表达一种不满,因而选项B.
根据第四段前三句“Generally, the three types of tears include emotional tears, which result from strong feelings such as joy or sadness. Basal tears lubricate(润滑)your eyes. Reflex tears release when dust or onion oxides annoy your eyes.(一般来说,这三种类型的眼泪包括情绪性的眼泪,这些眼泪是由强烈的情绪如喜悦或悲伤引起的。基础眼泪润滑你的眼睛。当灰尘或洋葱氧化物侵扰你的眼睛时,反射性眼泪会释放出来)”可知,这里将眼泪分成了三种类型,因此本段主要讲了眼泪的分类。故选C。
    【7题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段第一句“People often report feeling better after they cry.(人们通常在哭泣后感觉更好)”及最后一句“Crying might also help in understanding what’s important to us, especially if we cry over something that upsets us unexpectedly.(哭也可能有助于理解什么对我们来说是重要的,特别是当我们为一些意外的事情而哭泣时)”可知,这都是哭泣带来的好处,所以作者认为哭泣是有好处的。故选D。
    C
Today is National Superhero Day, according to the Marvel universe. But the everyday heroes covered by Newsweek don’t wear capes(斗篷)or feature in Marvel films.
National Superhero Day is so popular after the Twitter page for Vought International posted an image of the Soldier Boy character in a World War II uniform. According to the fictional story, a 1945 order was drafted to make April 28 “Soldier Boy Day”, but the character humbly changed it to “National Superhero Day”.
In reality, the annual occasion was created by Marvel Comics employees in 1995 to celebrate real heroes. Newsweek has covered all manner of everyday heroes over the years, with many of them on the small screen.
In October 2021, dash-cam footage(行车记录仪)captured a Florida policeman saving a 1-year-old girl. The girl was choking and unresponsive when her parents turned to Reginald Mathieu, who happened to be nearby. He raced to the girl’s rescue and performed repeated back blows until she regained consciousness.
One month earlier, five U.S. Marines came to the aid of a woman whose vehicle got stuck in floodwater in Washington, D.C. The men happened to be driving by after a Marine funeral. With the physical strength, they jumped into the knee-high water in clean and clear clothes and pushed the lady’s car out of the flood. “This is so cool. I should say they are superheroes in uniforms,” the woman said in her TikTok video of the rescue.
Humans are not the only everyday superheroes—dogs have also pulled off remarkable lifesaving moments. Mali, a British special-forces dog, was awarded the Britain’s Victoria Cross in 2017.
    8. Why was a 1945 order drafted according to the fictional story?
    A. To celebrate real heroes.
    B. To advertise the Marvel Comics.
    C. To make April 28 a Soldier Boy day
    D. To introduce the National Superhero Day.
    9. How long has the National Superhero Day existed?
    A. At least 26 years. B. Exact 22 years.
    C. Only 28 years. D. More than 76 years.
    10. What does “This” underlined in Paragraph 5 refer to?
    A. The Marine funeral. B. The girl’s rescue.
    C. The clean and clear car. D. The help from the Marines.
    11. Where is the text probably taken from?
    A. A news report. B. A book review.
    C. A hero’s story. D. A diary entry.
    【答案】8 C 9. C 10. D 11. A
根据第二段第二句“According to the fictional story, a 1945 order was drafted to make April 28 “Soldier Boy Day”, but the character humbly changed it to “National Superhero Day”.(根据虚构的故事,1945年起草了一项命令,将4月28日定为“士兵男孩日”,但该角色谦逊地将其改为“国家超级英雄日”)”可知,虚构故事中,1945年起草的命令是为了确立“士兵男孩日”。
根据第三段第一句“In reality, the annual occasion was created by Marvel Comics employees in 1995 to celebrate real heroes.(事实上,漫威漫画公司的员工在1995年创办了一年一度的庆祝活动,以歌颂真正的英雄)”可知,“国家超级英雄日”始于1995年,通过计算2023-1995=28年。
根据划线词所在句““This is so cool. I should say they are superheroes in uniforms,” the woman said in her TikTok video of the rescue.(“这太酷了。我应该说他们是穿着制服的超级英雄,”这名女子在她的TikTok视频中讲述这次救援)”的后半句可知,这名女子在说被救援的事,因此划线词“This”指代的是救援,即被五名美国海军陆战队队员救助的事。故选D。
    【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段最后一句“Newsweek has covered all manner of everyday heroes over the years, with many of them on the small screen.(这些年来,《新闻周刊》报道了各种各样的日常英雄,其中许多都在电视上出现过)”可知,这篇文章可能选自新闻报道。故选A。
    D
New Zealand’s government recently announced it will help pay for poorer families to replace their old cars with cleaner hybrid(混合动力的)or electric vehicles. The government said it plans to spend $357 million on the test program.
The move is part of a wider plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Greenhouse gases are believed to cause warming temperatures in the Earth’s atmosphere. New Zealand plans to provide aid for businesses to reduce emissions and have buses that run on environmentally safe fuel by 2035. The government also plans to provide food-waste collection for most homes by 2030.
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardem said in a statement, “We’ve all seen the recent reports on sea level rise and its influence right here in New Zealand. We cannot leave the issue of climate change until it’s too late to fix.” The plan is a step toward New Zealand’s stated goal of reaching net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
Reaching net-zero emissions means not creating more carbon in the atmosphere than oceans and forests can remove. Ardern said that reducing dependence on traditional fuels would help protect families from extreme price increases. The plan also sets a goal of reducing total car travel by 20 percent over the next 13 years. The programs will be paid for from a $2.8 billion climate emergency response fund.
Officials said that over time, money collected from polluters would pay for the programs rather than taxes from families. Some critics of the plan say it continued to be less restrictive on New Zealand’s huge agriculture industry. Agriculture creates more than half of the nation’s total greenhouse gas emissions. But the industry is also important to the economy as the nation’s biggest export earner.
David Seymour is the leader of New Zealand’s ACT political party. He said that some of the announced programs are proven to be ineffective and have been tried and failed overseas. Seymour added that people should be able to choose how they reduce emissions through the market-basedd emissions trading plan.
    12. Which of the following is NOT New Zealand planning to do?
    A. Buy cars for poor families. B. Offer assistance to business.
    C. Use environmentally safe fuels. D. Spend money on the test program.
    13. What does Jacinda Ardem suggest doing about the climate change?
    A. Setting aside the problem. B. Realizing the stated goal.
    C. Addressing the issue early. D. Decreasing dependence on traditional fuels.
    14. What can we infer from the text?
    A. New Zealand aims to control carbon emissions.
    B. The move has a goal of reducing the use of buses.
    C. Achieving net-zero emissions means creating no carbon.
    D. Agriculture makes less importance in the nation’s economy.
    15. What is David Seymour’s attitude towards the program?
    A. Negative. B. Objective. C. Favorable D. Unconcerned.
A 13. C 14. A 15. A
根据第一段最后一句“The government said it plans to spend $357 million on the test program.(政府表示,计划在测试项目上花费3.57亿美元)”可知,新西兰政府会为测试项目出钱,因此选项D正确;根据第二段第三句“New Zealand plans to provide aid for businesses to reduce emissions and have buses that run on environmentally safe fuel by 2035.(新西兰计划向企业提供援助,以减少排放,并在2035年前让公共汽车使用对环境无害的燃料)”可知,新西兰政府会协助企业减排并计划使用环保型燃料,因此选项BC正确。故选A。
根据第三段前两句“Prime Minister Jacinda Ardem said in a statement, “We’ve all seen the recent reports on sea level rise and its influence right here in New Zealand. We cannot leave the issue of climate change until it’s too late to fix.”(新西兰总理Jacinda Ardem在一份声明中说:“我们都看到了最近关于海平面上升及其对新西兰的影响的报道。我们不能放任气候变化问题,否则为时已晚。”)”可知,Jacinda Ardem建议要尽早解决环境变化问题。故选C。
    【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段第三句“New Zealand plans to provide aid for businesses to reduce emissions and have buses that run on environmentally safe fuel by 2035.(新西兰计划向企业提供援助,以减少排放,并在2035年前让公共汽车使用对环境无害的燃料)”及第三段最后一句“The plan is a step toward New Zealand’s stated goal of reaching net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.(该计划是新西兰向2050年实现净零碳排放目标迈出的一步)”可知,新西兰政府制定该计划的目的是控制碳排放。故选A。
根据最后一段中“David Seymour is the leader of New Zealand’s ACT political party. He said that some of the announced programs were proven to be ineffective and had been tried and failed overseas. (David Seymour是新西兰ACT政党的领导人。他说,已经宣布的一些项目被证明是无效的,在海外已经尝试过,但失败了)”可知,有些项目并未成功实施,由此可推知David Seymour对这些项目持否定的态度。故选A。

    F. However, you must employ active rather than passive listening.
    G. The repetition of most music lyrics makes them a way to learn language.
F 17. B 18. G 19. E 20. C
根据上文“Watch TV in the language you’re studying.(用你正在学习的语言看电视)”以及后文“For example, if you have the television on while you’re washing dishes, that is passive listening. To use TV viewing as a tool to improve your language skills, pay attention and watch actively.(例如,如果你在洗碗的时候开着电视,那就是被动倾听。把看电视作为提高语言技能的工具,集中注意力,积极地看电视)”可知,后文的例子表明要主动倾听电视,而不是被动。故F选项“然而,你必须采用主动而不是被动的倾听”符合语境,故选F。
    【17题详解】
根据后文“In this way, you can understand what’s being said. Later, you might turn on subtitles in the language you`re learning.(这样,你就能听懂别人在说什么。之后,你可能会打开你正在学习的语言的字幕)”可知,本句是在说明听懂别人在说什么的第一步,即打开母语字幕。故B选项“首先打开母语的字幕”符合语境,故选B。
    【18题详解】
根据后文“Another advantage of listening to music or to a podcast is that you’re free to do something else at the same time.(听音乐或听播客的另一个好处是,你可以在同一时间做其他事情)”可知,本句是在说明听音乐的第一个好处:大多数音乐歌词的重复使它们成为学习语言的一种方式。
根据上文“Don’t be afraid to start with children’s books or comic books online. You likely learned how to read your native language through children’s books, and you can learn another language the same way.(不要害怕从儿童书籍或网上漫画书开始。你可能通过儿童读物学会了如何阅读母语,你也可以用同样的方法学习另一种语言)”可知,上文提到阅读儿童读物,本句说明原因:单词会更简单,你更容易理解。故E选项“单词会更简单,你更容易理解”符合语境,故选E。
    【20题详解】
根据后文“If the language you’re studying is an official language of a country, there will typically be national news and entertainment websites in that language. Do a general online search for “news” with the name of the country. You might try doing your search in the language to bring up websites that are in that language.(如果你正在学习的语言是一个国家的官方语言,通常会有该语言的国家新闻和娱乐网站。用国家名称在网上搜索“新闻”。你可以试着用这门语言搜索,找到用这门语言的网站)”可知,本段的建议是访问该语言的国家新闻和娱乐网站。故C选项“访问国际新闻或娱乐网站”符合语境,故选C。

Admittedly, we generations are in a new era when the world is undergoing major changes unseen in a century. With great changes come new challenges and responsibilities. To better coping with these, we yet need to sweep away all the uncivilized phenomena in our school first.
Unaware of its value, some students take it for granted to waste food. Besides, in the library, certain students speak or talk aloud, disturbing and annoying others. Little as the matters seem to be, we cannot afford to overlook the serious consequences they will bring.
Last summer, my wife Angela and I helped our friend Diane move to a rented house in Connecticut.
Diane has two children, then aged 10 and 12, and when we arrived she was preparing to put a bed frame together. I offered to take over as she needed to pick up her children. Before leaving, she pointed out a white square on the wooden floor and said: “Would you cover that patch with the bed, please? I’m not sure what’s going on, but 1 think the floors are a little weak there.” We were on the ground floor, so there was no sense of danger. Diane’s only worry was that her son might jump out of bed and damage them.
The first three sections of the bed went together easily, but when I stood up to look for the fourth I heard a crack—I had stepped in the middle of the mysterious square. The floor broke and then gave way. Rather than throw my hands out to grab for support, I pressed them against my sides. I don’t know what made me do that- some strange instinct, or sheer luck. A second later I was underwater, it felt as if I had stepped into a swimming pool.
I resurfaced and started searching for a handhold, but felt only wet, slippery rock. I was in a well, made of large, rough stones. At least 15ft above me light spilled through the hole in the floor. I realized I was at the bottom of a well. Angela was frantically(紧张忙乱地)calling my name. “I’m OK!” I yelled. “Should I call 911?” she asked. “Yes,” I replied, breathlessly. “I think that would be a good idea.”
My dad is long gone, but he once told me something I will never forget: “Try never to panic, it is hard to get things right when you are panicked.” So while Angela spoke to the emergency services, I kept my head, took stock of(估量)my surroundings and tried to work out how to stay alive until help arrived.
    注意:
    1. 续写词数应为150左右;
    2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I became increasingly uncomfortable in the well.
    ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
With great relief, I heard sirens(汽笛)approaching.
    ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I became increasingly uncomfortable in the well. The water wasn’t freezing, but it wasn’t the temperature I’d want to swim in. And I didn’t feel my feet touch the bottom of the well. The stones were tightly packed, which made me unable to climb up. Exhausted and helpless, I fell in a certain panic. “Try never to panic, it is hard to get things right when you are panicked,” dad’s words rang in my ear again and again. After trying out a thousand times, I finally got a firm foothold against two small little rocks and got my breath back slightly. Above the well, Angela kept the emergency services updated without a break.
With great relief, I heard sirens (汽笛) approaching. At last, faces appeared at the top of the well. A lifejacket was lowered down, followed by a rope, so I had something to hang on to. With the help of firefighters, I was eventually pulled out of the well safe and sound. Standing beside the well and taking a deep breath, I realized how lucky I was and how important the encouraging words are for those in danger.
