In 1980, I lived in Sydney, Nova Scotia, which was a dirty steel town then. The steel factory
was fed by a large number of coal mines surrounding the area. I became fascinated by the mines, the
miners and the life they led. One weekend, I visited the Miner's Museum, which was built over a
disused mine. Pictures of men, faces black with coal dust, hung from the walls on the main floor.
Many would die from black lung disease long before they died of old age.
I was the only local in the group of tourists. Along the way, we paused to look at the displays of
mining equipment from centuries long gone. At one lighted alcove (壁凹) there was a small cage. A
bird once lived inside. Treated kindly by the miners, it was well fed. It sat and waited to give up its
life as a warning of the deadly methane gas (沼气) the coal produced. With no color or smell, a
buildup of methane would kill the miners and destroy the tunnels they worked in. The bird's death,
like a smoke detector, warned the men of danger.
"Turn off your helmet lights!" the guide then ordered in the tunnel. "I want you to experience
the life of a miner. " One by one we turned off our lights. The darkness was total — so thick that you
thought the very air itself had been sucked out of the mine. And the silence! The silence was
complete except for the breaths of fear from my companions. In the end, when we were pulled back
to the surface, the warm sun had new meaning for us.
Back in my small, rented room in a basement, I closed the curtains and turned off the lights. I
thought deeply about a miner's life under the ground, black dust, no sunshine and much danger. It's
not a life I would wish on anyone. Many people may hate their jobs. There have been a few I didn't
like and complained about. Then I thought about the coal miners and realized how blessed I am.
24. Why did the author go to the Miner's Museum?
A. Because he wanted to record the miners.
B. Because he didn't want to do anything else.
C. Because he was interested in the life of the miners.
D. Because he was always attracted by pictures in museums.
25. What can be inferred from the second paragraph?
A. The bird liked methane gas.
B. Even a little methane gas would kill the miners.
C. The tunnels would be exploded by the miners if methane gas was released.
D. It was hard for the miners to know if methane gas was released without the bird.
26. How did the tourists feel after turning off their helmet lights?
A. Calm and relaxed.
B. Excited and thrilled.
C. Fascinated and peaceful.
D. Breathless and frightened.
27. What does the author want to convey in the last two paragraphs?
3
A. He believed that he was very lucky.
B. The basement was his tunnel and mine.
C. No job could satisfy him except mining.
D. It was impossible for miners to live a happy life.
C
As one of the biggest topics of the last decade, sustainability has become the beacon(灯塔) of
hope to protect the planet. From supermarkets taking action on plastic packaging to the zero waste
movement that can be practised from your kitchen, changes made by individuals and organizations
across the globe have had an impact on the way we think, shop and live.
So what does that mean for the world of technology? You'd be forgiven for thinking that the
words "sustainable" and "technology" don't usually go hand in hand. E-waste is, after all, one of the
planet's biggest contributing waste streams. Not only that, but the materials that go into technology
products are also part of the problem.
But with a challenge comes an opportunity, and there's already some brilliant progress
happening — great news for those of us wanting to be more sustainable with our technology. Firstly
renewed products are having its moment. While consumers would previously turn their noses up at
the idea of a second-hand device, there's been a huge surge in demand for renewed technology
products. The second major step in tackling the problem of e-waste is a change in attitudes from
owning a product to subscribing for one. A subscription for a smartphone might sound like a foreign
concept, but it's already gaining momentum. At the forefront of this movement is a London-based
technology startup, which offers a subscription service for the latest smartphones. As customers
aren't paying to own the phone at the end of their contract, the monthly price is significantly lower
than average.
Studies show that extending a phone's lifespan from one to four years can decrease its
environmental impact by about 40%. So the next time it comes to refreshing your device — whether
a smartphone, a laptop, a tablet or something else——consider the more environmentally friendly
options that are at your fingertips.
28. What's the purpose of paragraph 1?
A. To change the way we think, shop and live.
B. To introduce the topic of sustainability in technology.
C. To tell us what people have done to protect the planet.
D. To call on people to do something for the environment.
29. What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about?
A. High-tech products are in short supply.
B. E-waste contributes to the biggest waste streams.
C. The two sustainability problems in technology.
D. Ignoring sustainable technology is unforgivable.
30.What is present consumers' attitude towards a second-hand device?
A. Supportive. D. Doubtful.
B. Unacceptable.
C. Sympathy
31.How can we become sustainable in technology according to the text?
A. By upgrading the old one.
B. By subscribing for a smartphone.
C. By spending less money on a smartphone.
D. By replacing the old one with the latest one
D
Much like people whose relatives or friends have died, orphaned(成为孤儿的) elephants get by
with a little help from their friends, according to a study.
Scientists in the United States and Kenya analysed stress hormones(激素) in the baby elephants
whose mothers had died, expecting to find higher levels. Instead, the support of their peers appeared
4
to reduce the orphans' level of anxiety.
The study, published last week in the journal Communications Biology, concluded that social
relationships have a psychological impact on the young elephants. Elephants have strong familial and
group ties. Before the age of nine, baby elephants rarely move away more than 30 feet (nine metres )
from their mothers, and even a few hours of separation lead to joyous reunion. The bond between
female elephants and their young has long been thought to reduce stress.
Expecting to find that the orphaned elephants, which tend to die early at a higher rate than those
whose mothers are still alive, would be more depressed, the team analysed stress hormone levels in
the waste matter of 36 young elephants in the nature reserves in northern Kenya between 2015 and
2016. Twenty-five of the elephants had lost their mothers to drought or hunting between 2009 and
2013, when arise in the demand for ivory left many elephants on the reserves motherless.
However, the researchers were surprised to find that long-term stress hormone levels were
similar among orphans and elephants with living mothers. Jenna Parker, the study's main author and
a professor at Colorado State University, said their unexpected resilience is directly linked to social
support from other elephants, specifically from their companions. Those with more “friends" had
significantly lower stress hormone levels. The results may encourage elephant orphanages to pair up
animals to help them to recover from loss and adapt to future threats.
It could be a timely move as interactions between humans and elephants are on the rise thanks
in part to drought related to climate change. Experts say the increased conflict is a threat to Kenya's
36,000 strong elephant population.
32.What did the scientists focus on about orphaned elephants in the study?
A. Their peers.
B. Their family.
C. Their psychology.
D. Their growth
33. What can we learn from paragraph 3?
A. Separation is necessary for younger elephants
B. Young elephants are attached to their mothers
C. Younger elephants are fond of wandering alone
D. Female elephants dominate young elephants’ life
34.What does the underlined word “resilience" probably mean in paragraph 5?
A. Difference. B. Anxiety. C. Recovery. D. Result
35.Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A. Orphaned Elephants Find Relief in Friends
B. Elephants Have a Strong Bond with Mothers
C. Stress Levels are Higher in Young Elephants
D. Orphaned Elephants Have Been Suffering a Lot

When my husband Randy died in late fall, deciding what to do with his garden was way down
on the list of necessary tasks. During the first few months, I cried with our daughters, planned a
memorial, cried with my family, celebrated a quiet Thanksgiving, and panicked over not having
bought Christmas presents.
As the calendar turned to a new year, the often rainy days and long nights deepened my sorrow.
I found myself exhausted at the end of February, both physically and mentally.
Then the daffodils bloomed(开花) in the garden.
Years before, Randy had planted dozens of these lemon-yellow flowers. To him, they served as
a reminder of hope, a promise that light and warmth would soon replace cold and dark. Looking at
those daffodils, I thought about how Randy had considered our garden a living work of art, carefully
choosing plants so we'd see new blooms every month.
Then I noticed all the weeds that had taken root and spread everywhere. The neglect(疏于打
理)showed, for Randy's illness had lasted a couple of years, a time when he didn't have energy for
yard work the way he had before
Faced with the neglected garden, I felt overwhelmed in the beginning. My daughters suggested I
hire a service to clean everything up. I didn't respond.
Every time I sat in the garden alone, the memories of the lively garden came flooding, like the
numerous scenes in an unforgettable film. Many days Randy came home from work, changed into
old clothes and headed out the door to mow or prune(修剪). Orange dragonflies followed him around
the yard as he worked. Honeybees buzzed among the flowers, birds sang beautiful songs, and gentle
breezes carried the sweet smell of dirt. No matter how cold or wet it was, the fresh air and physical
activity made him energized and refreshed. For Randy, the work was quiet and comforting, which
was a relief, as well as a pleasure.
Paragraph 1: The days grew warmer and lighter, and I started the work myself.________________
Paragraph 2:Weeks later, my daughters returned to visit me._______________________________
