    Four famous British film locations
American and Canadian visitors to Britain are usually never quite as interested in film sites as British tourism folks seem to expect. For classic film lovers, however, Britain hardly lacks memorable film locations. Here is a great selection of recognizable locations from some of our favorite films.
    Castle Howard, Yorkshire
Brideshead Revisited put Castle Howard on the map. The Yorkshire estate is a wonderful visit, virtually unchanged since the filming of Evelyn Waugh's classic there in 1980. You can easily see Charles Ryder and Sebastian Flyte rowing on the lake. It's an easy drive, or bus ride, east from York.
    Cambridge, Cambridgeshire
There are many scenes from Cambridge recognizable from the Academy Award-winning Chariots of Fire. Perhaps none are as memorable as the race Harold Abrahams and Lord Lynley run against the clock around Trinity College Great Court. Visit Gonville& Caius College and King's College Chapel as well.
    Dorchester, Dorset
So much of the surrounding countryside is recognizable as “Thomas Hardy country". Dorchester itself, though, is Casterbridge played out i The Mayor of Casterbridge, Tess of the D'Urbervilles, and Far from the Madding Crowd. You almost expect to see Alan Bates or Julie Christie walking along Corn Street.
    Castle Combe, Wiltshire
Long termed "the prettiest village in England", Castle Combe just might be. The southern Cotswold village near Chippenham has been a film setmany times, perhaps most famously with Rex Harrison in Doctor Doolittle (1967).
    21. Who is one character of Evelyn Waugh's work?
    A. Sebastian Flyte. B. Julie Christie. C. Harold Abrahams. D. Rex Harrison.
    22. What makes Dorchester famous?
    A. Com Street. B. Its unusual location
    C. Thomas Hardy's works. D. Its surrounding scenery.
    23. Which film was set in the southern Cotswold village?
    A. Brideshead Revisited.
    B. Chariots of Fire.
    C. Doctor Doolittle.
    D. Far from the Madding Crowd.
    B
There once lived a woman who had been blind for decades. Then one day she found a doctor who treated the woman with a new device she had invented called the Laserphaco Probe. For the first time in over 30 years, the woman could regain her eyesight. The doctor responsible for this life-changing surgery was called Dr. Patricia E. Bath.
Dr. Bath was an American ophthalmologist (眼科医生), researcher, and an advocate for the prevention, treatment, and cure of blindness. She had an interest in science and medicine from a young age, which she said was first evoked by a chemistry kit her mother had bought for her when she was young
During a fellowship at Columbia University, Dr. Bath realized that African Americans were twice as likely to suffer from blindness than other patients she attended to. This observation led to her development of a community ophthalmology system, which increased the amount of eye care given to underserved communities. This allowed thousands of people to get early preventative care for conditions that would have otherwise been untreated saving the eyesight of many.
Dr. Bath invented the new technique to remove cataracts(白内障)by the Laserphaco Probe. This technique is still used around the world, and it has allowed doctors to restore patients' eyesight in a more precise, and less painful, manner than techniques before it.
Cataracts develop as people age. They form when the proteins in the lens(晶状体)of the eye break down, making the lens cloudy. This can significantly affect vision. Traditional cataract surgery involved removing the cloudy lens of the eye and replacing it with an artificial lens. However, this surgery was not always successful, and could be quite painful. Dr. Bath succeeded in solving the problem.
Dr. Bath made innovative contributions to the field of medicine which had long-lasting impacts on the communities she served.

    A. Displayed.
    B. Stimulated.
    C. Discovered.
    D. Maintained.
    25. Why did Dr. Bath create a community ophthalmology system?
    A. To offer eye care treatment to the poor.
    B. To help the blind regain their eyesight.
    C. To provide eye surgery for African Americans.
    D. To give real medical care to blind people.
    26. What can we say about Dr. Bath's device?
    A. It prevents proteins in the lens breaking down.
    B. It needs to be advertised around the world.
    C. It helps patients avoid getting cataracts.
    D. It makes cataract surgery better than before.
    27. What would be the best title for the text?
    A. Meet a woman who improved vision for millions
    B. Admire an inventor who changed the face of science
    C. Recommend a doctor who had various medical skills
    D. Remember a researcher who was an advocate for the poor

A pair of businessmen are attempting to start a new human spaceflight company that, instead of launching rockets, will lift civilian passengers into the sky tied to a high-performance balloon.
Space Perspective aims to carry a capsule of eight passengers at a time, hanging from a balloon, 100, 000 feet above Earth. The balloon and capsule will gently rise for about two hours at 12 mph, floating along for another two hours as passengers enjoy refreshments and a view of the Earth below, and then descend back down at 12 mph and land in either the Gulf of Mexico or the Atlantic Ocean.
The goal is to make the flights as accessible and affordable to as many people as possible, one day possibly hosting weddings. Co-founders Jane Poynter and Taber MacCallum, who are married, said they expect prices to be around $125, 000 for a single ticket. “Everybody should be able to see the Earth from space, " Poynter said. “We want them to really be able to experience what astronauts talk about, looking down at the Earth in that blackness of outer space. "
But passenger flights are still some time away.
Hoping to perform its first test flight in early 2023, Space Perspective joins the groups of developing companies working to create an industry that can send paying passengers to the edges of space, generally thought to begin about 50 miles off Earth's surface. Space Perspective's balloon will reach about 20 miles.
Passengers will need very little training before taking a ride with Space Perspective, MacCallum said. During the flight, the inside of the capsule will be pressurized, and temperature will be controlled. Onboard there will be a pilot, paired with another down on Earth, who can also control the craft. A new balloon, which will be filled with hydrogen, will be used for each flight and materials from it recycled. The capsule will be able to be reused on many missions.
Presentations of the spacecraft, to be named Spaceship Neptune, show a large capsule with a circle of seats facing out to a row of windows. Poynter and MacCallum said a bar, a bathroom and an clear windowed roof at the top of the capsule will be combined into the design.
    28. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “descend" in Paragraph 2?
    A. Decrease.
    B. Sink.
    C. Dive.
    D. Fall.
    29. Which of the following best describes the spaceflight according to the Co-founders?
    A. Challenging.
    B. Mysterious.
    C. Sustainable.
    D. Cheap.
    30. What can we learn from the passage?
    A. Space Perspective plans to fly passengers in early 2023.
    B. Space Perspective enables everybody to see the Earth above.
    C. Space Perspective is to reuse the balloon and the capsule.
    D. Space Perspective intends to transport common people into sky.
    31. What is the purpose of the text?
    A. To advertise a service.
    B. To present a scene.
    C. To introduce a project.
    D. To share an adventure.
    D
If there was one good thing to come out of lockdowns, it was improved book sales and rates of reading, especially among children. A survey of 70, 000 children and young people by the National Literacy Trust, however, has found this gain is now gone: figures are now equal to just before the pandemic, when the trust recorded the lowest levels of reading enjoyment since it first asked the question 17 years ago. A concurrent study of 8, 000 five to eight-year-olds found that nearly one in five did not have a book at home.
These questions are not about basic literacy but about the habit of reading. The children surveyed spoke of books giving them subjects to talk about; of entertainment and information; of reading helping them to understand people unlike themselves; of finding in books a place of escape and a reduction of loneliness; of aid in coping with difficulty. “It helps me in learning about what I am feeling. That is because I have a hard time expressing my emotions and would rather not bother anyone, ” as one child put it.
Children who read at home are six times more likely to be able to read above expected levels, while one study of 160, 000 adults from 31 countries found children whose homes held at least 80 books, but whose schooling ended at 13or 14, were “as literate and technologically quick in adulthood as university graduates. " Another found these children also went on to earn more.
It is not that most parents don't understand this. A reason often cited for the lack of books at home is the cost of living. Almost a fifth of Britain's public libraries have closed in 10 years, while one in eight primary schools in England, rising to one in four in disadvantaged communities, do not have a library or given reading space. Furthermore, the Department for Education, with its insistence on systematic synthetic phonics(自然拼读法), would keep an eye on the number of children who told the National Literacy Trust that teaching in primary schools had put them off reading. Compared with other problems this country faces, providing varied reading material is relatively straightforward to fix. We owe it to children to do so.
    32. What does “ this gain is now gone" in Paragraph 1 most probably mean?
    A. More children take to reading.
    B. Sales of books have shrank.
    C. Rates of reading remain stable.
    D. Reading materials are available.
    33. Which of the following do students disapprove of?
    A. Reading broadens children's horizons.
    B. Reading offers children spiritual shelters.
    C. Reading improves children’s basic literacy.
    D. Reading helps children deal with emotions.
    34. Children reading more often at home are found ___.
    A. to be pushed by expected levels of reading
    B. to end schooling earlier than average readers
    C. to be willing to learn more when they grow up
    D. to possess greater reading and technological abilities
    35. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
    A. Local communities do not have public libraries or appointed reading spaces.
    B. Immediate action should be taken to offer children more varied reading material.
    C. Primary schools have so far done a great job in encouraging children to read more.
    D. Disadvantaged families attach little importance to reading for lack of books at home.

Thin, average, and undisciplined, I was the failure of the boys' basketball tryouts (选拔赛) in seventh grade. Making the team was very important to me, and I couldn't wait to get a place. Although I was extremely nervous, I truly thought I would make the team. But I went in overly optimistic, and quickly faced a cruel reality.
When on the court, I gasped like an old man on his last legs. Clearly, I was out of shape and having trouble keeping up. When it hit me that this was only the first day, and that there was a second to follow, I realized I would have to step it up in order to gain a place on the team.
Unfortunately, day two went exactly like day one: I missed shots and passed basketball badly like an out-of-breath fool. Hoping the coach was not watching all my bad moves, I had trouble keeping a positive attitude. Finally, Coach, who usually seemed small, posted the lists of the Boys A and B Teams. Everybody quickly ran to catch a glimpse of the chosen few.
After scanning the list once, twice, three times, my name was nowhere. Although I had predicted the disaster that now settled on me, with my head hanging, I slowly walked to the car. This experience definitely did not go as I had planned.
On the way home, I complained “How could that little foolish boy be a better choice than me? And. . . ”
“Adam!” my mom cut me off. “Why don't you realize maybe you need a little more practice? You'd better go to basketball camps next summer. "
Although I did not want to believe her, I knew it was true. Failing to make the team was nobody's fault but mine. Right then and there, in the middle of my anger, I realized I had to spring into action.
    注意:
    1. 续写词数应为150 左右;

When the lists were posted, I found I had not only made it, but my name was the very first, which gave me a true sense of self-satisfaction. Sure enough, ⑥the old saying “If at first you don't succeed, try, try again” rang true.

    1. Making the team was very important to me, but I had got used to no-cut teams where everybody who tried out got a spot.
    2. Although I had predicted the disaster that had now settled on me, with my head hanging, I slowly walked to the car.
I was thin, average, and undisciplined.
Making the team was very important to me.
I got used to no-cut teams.
On the first day, I was out of shape and had trouble keeping up on the court.
On the second day, I missed shots and passed badly.
When the coach posted out the result, I didn’t find my name.
On the way home, I complained.
Mother stopped me and advised me to practice more.
I realized I had to get my act together.
Then I threw myself into as many basketball opportunities as I could find.
“every basketball camp available” 和 “camp after camp” 呼应了本文开头 “as many basketball opportunities as I could find”, 体现了作者要刻苦训练的决心。
“bringing me to...”

    1.sharpen

    2. When the lists were posted, I found I had not only made it, but my name was the very first, which gave me a true sense of self- satisfaction.(when 引导时间状语从句; 宾语从句; which 引导非限制性定语从句)

Since memory plays an important role in our life, scientists are increasingly interested in research on how to improve memory. There are some factors they believe to be important to expand memory ability. (20)
To begin with, food is very important. Some vitamins are necessary for your memory to work properly. They are found in bread, vegetables and fruit. (18) Another essential factor is water. It helps to maintain the memory systems, especially in older people. According to Dr. Roswell, lack of water in the body has an immediate and strong effect on memory. It can cause confusion and other difficulties. Sleep also plays a significant role. To be able to have a good memory, we must allow the brain to have plenty of rest. While sleeping, the brain no longer controls the senses, and starts to store the information one has received. Lack of sleep would make one feel tired, weaken one’s ability to concentrate, and affect the brain’s ability to store information. (19)
