World-famous music and movie star Olivia Newton-John has died in southern California. The highly awarded Newton-John sold more than 100 million record albums during her career. From 1973 to 1983, she was among the world’s most popular entertainers. She had 14 top 10 singles in the United States alone and won four Grammy Awards.
Newton-John is perhaps most remembered for her performance in 1978’s wildly popular musical movie Grease. She starred as a high school student Sandy, and was partnered with John Travolta. One song the two shared in the film, You’re the One That I Want, sold more than 15 million copies.
“I was afraid that at 30 I was too old to play a high school girl,” Newton-John told The Telegraph in 2017. “Everything about making the film was fun, but if I had to pick a favorite moment, it was the transformation from what I call Sandy 1 to Sandy 2. I got to play a different character and wear different clothes, and when I put on that tight black clothes to sing You’re the One That I Want, I got a very different reaction from the guys on the set.”
Physical, Newton-John’s biggest single, came out in 1981. The energetic dance song was hugely popular, holding Number One position on Billboard’s hit list for 10 weeks straight. Later, the music industry magazine named Physical the Song of the Year. A video linked to the song won a Grammy Award as well.
In 1992, Newton-John faced loss and sickness. Her father died and she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Then Newton-John created an album, Gaia: One Woman’s Journey, about her battle with cancer and the loss of her father.
Newton-John married John Easterling in 2008. When robots appear to engage with people and display human-like emotions, people may think of them as capable of “thinking”, or acting on their own beliefs and desires rather than their programs, according to the research published by the American Psychological Association.
“The relationship between human-like shape, human-like behavior and the tendency to owe independent thought and intentional behavior to robots is yet to be understood,” said study author Agnieszka Wykowska, PhD, a principal investigator at the Italian Institute of Technology. “As artificial intelligence increasingly becomes part of our lives, it is important to understand how interacting with a robot that displays human-like behaviors might cause higher likelihood of attribution of intentional agency to the robot.”
Across three experiments involving 119 participants, researchers examined how individuals would see a human-like robot, the iCub, after socializing with it and watching videos together. Before and after interacting with the robot, participants completed a questionnaire that showed them pictures of the robot in different situations and asked them to choose whether the robot’s motivation in each situation was mechanical or intentional.
The researchers found that participants who watched videos with the human-like robot were more likely to rate the robot’s actions as intentional, rather than programmed, while those who only interacted with the machine-like robot were not. This shows that mere expo-sure to a human-like robot is not enough to make people believe it is capable of thoughts and emotions. It is human-like behavior that might be crucial for being deemed as an intentional agent.
According to Wykowska, these findings show that people might be more likely to believe artificial intelligence is capable of independent thought when it creates the impression that it can behave just like humans. “This could inform the design of social robots of the future,” she said.
8. What were participants asked to do in the experiment?
A. Behave like a robot.
B. Complete a questionnaire.
C. Show pictures of the robot.
D. Watch the behavior of the iCub.
9. What does the underlined word “deemed” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Believed. B. Persuaded. C. Performed. D. Advocated.
10. What could the findings be applied to?
A. Addressing some technique problems.
B. Creating social robots just like humans.
C. Revealing artificial intelligence industry.
D. Guiding the design of future social robots.
11. What would be a suitable title for the text?
A. Human-like robots can interact with humans
B. Human-like robots can behave just like humans
C. Artificial intelligence has become part of our lives
D. Human-like robots may be believed to have mental states
B 9. A 10. D 11. D

A method to transform a commonly thrown-away plastic to a resin(树脂) used in 3D printing could allow for making better use of plastic waste. A team of Washington State University researchers developed a simple and efficient way to transform polylactic acid (PLA) (聚乳酸),a bio-based plastic used in products such as filament, plastic silverware and food packaging to a high-quality resin.
“We found a way to immediately turn this into something that’s stronger and better, and we hope that will provide people with the inspiration to upcycle this stuff instead of just throwing it away,” said Yu-Chung Chang, a postdoctoral researcher in the WSU School of Mechanical and Materials Engineering and a co-corresponding author on the work. “We made stronger materials just straight out of trash. We believe this could be a great opportunity.”
Although it’s bio-based, PLA, which is categorized as a number 7 plastic, can float in fresh or salt water for a year without degrading. It is also rarely recycled because like many plastics, when it’s melted down and re-formed, it doesn’t perform as well as the original version and becomes less valuable.
“It’s biodegradable and compostable, but once you look into it, it turns out that it can take up to 100 years for it to rot away in a landfill,” Chang said. “In reality, it still creates a lot of pollution. We want to make sure that when we do start producing PLA on the million-tons scale, we will know how to deal with it.”
While the researchers focused on PLA for the study, they hope to apply the work to poly-ethylene terephthalate(PET)(涤纶树脂), which is more common than PLA and has a similar chemical structure and presents a bigger waste problem. They have filed a temporary patent and are working to further improve the process. The researchers are also looking into other applications for the upcycling method.
12. What can the method help do according to paragraph 1?
A. Solve financial crisis.
B. Change waste into wealth.
C. Control plastic production.
D. Determine 3D printing skills.
13. What does Yu-Chung Chang think of the method?
A. Unrealistic. B. Imaginable. C. Promising. D. Common.
14. Which of the following is a feature of number 7 plastics?
A. They are hard to break down.
B. They are easy to deal with.
C. They are invaluable to recycle.
D. They are difficult to sort out.
15. What is the text mainly about?
A. Applications of an upcycling method.
B. 3D printing with newly found materials.
C. A new way to turn plastic into valuable products.
D. Some better methods to break down different plastics.
B 13. C 14. A 15. C

故填that/which。

Last year we went on an European culture tour. I, together with my friends, were looking forward to visiting the University of Greenwich. So we reached the River Thames on the first day. To our joys, we met with a couple of old professors who had been traveling around Britain a few days. We felt so excited which we couldn’t help sharing our travel experiences with them. We visited France and Italy with them and we also had a wonderfully picnic together. As we were expected, they planned to leaving first. We offered to help carry their packs to the airport and saw him off. They were grateful to us. What meaningful and impressive the trip was!
【答案】1. an→a
2. were→was
3. joys→joy
4. Britain后加for
5. which→that
6. wonderfully→wonderful
7. 去掉were
8. leaving→leave
9. him→them
10. What→How
故将an改为a。
故将were改为was。
短语to one’s joy为固定搭配,joy不加s。
so... that... 故将which改为that。
故去掉were。
固定短语plan to do sth.
故将him改为them。
故将What改为How。

The survey our foreign teacher asked us to make on how students in our class improve their English writing ability after class shows that most students prefer to recite different writing models rather than improve their English. Reciting typical writing models is of great use to get a high mark in a short time, but actually it may well limit the ability of writing.
In my opinion, you are supposed to read more, which is a good way to expose and get more information, to improve your writing ability. In addition, try to listen and speak more English after class. Speaking, listening and writing influence and promote each other, so creating a good English environment really contributes to the improvement of writing.
In short, only by combining the four basic English skills together can we improve our writing skills.
有用的:of great use →useful
很可能:may well do something→ be very likely to do something
应该:be supposed to →should
此外:in addition → additionally
The survey our foreign teacher asked us to make on how students in our class improve their English writing ability after class shows that most students prefer to recite different writing models to improve their English.
According to the survey our foreign teacher asked us to make on how students in our class improve their English writing ability after class, most students prefer to recite different writing models to improve their English.
