I’ve been in an 18-year love-hate relationship with a black walnut tree.
It’s a unique tree. In late September or early October, falling fruits as hard as baseballs threaten the skulls (头骨) of you, your children, your neighbors and those that reside next door to them. Umbrellas in the yard are a must while dining in early August, and as for me, I wear my bike helmet while working in the garden.
The black walnut also releases a chemical substance through its roots as a competitive strategy. It’s poisonous to several common plants. There have been many new plant varieties that I brought home with hopes that maybe the black walnut would accept them, but they failed to flourish.
What does work are native plants that naturally grow in the area. Native plants are important to have around since they provide beneficial pollinators (传粉者) like birds, bees and butterflies with seeds and contribute to a healthy and biodiverse environment. Native plants for this area are generally easy to grow, so they experience less stress.
Have I thought of getting rid of this giant pain in my tiny backyard? Yes, however, getting rid of this tree standing at 50 feet with an 87-inch trunk is next to impossible. It’s also protected under the law. Rightfully so. Trees are important to the urban forest and for all of those that inhabit it.
Sometimes I think about my life without the black walnut. I can’t imagine a spring without the birds who arrive every year and loudly sing their songs before dawn. I’d miss falling asleep on lazy weekend afternoons as I look up into its leaves.
Every spring, I wonder what the season holds: What are the chances of being knocked unconscious while barbecuing? Like any good relationship, I’ll never be pleased. I’m stuck with this tree, so I’ll listen to its needs and give it the space it requires. In return, my walnut offers a habitat for wildlife and a reminder.

26.Which of the following DOESN’T account for the author’s love-hate relationship with
the tree?
A.The volume of its fruits may bring inconvenience.

D.The presence of the tree takes up much space of the garden.
27.The author most probably got a reminder from the tree that ________.
A.it’s better to give than to take
B.trees and plants have their own ways to flourish
C.acceptance, instead of resistance, is the better way to be
D.even a good relationship is not always trouble-free

What would you look like when you are 80 years old? It seems too far away to imagine, but an app named FaceApp tries to show you.
The app creates transformations of users’ faces using various filters(滤镜)and features. The FaceApp aging challenge went viral last month. Even many celebrities like Taylor Swift and Justin Bieber shared their wrinkly, grey-haired selfies on social media.
FaceApp helps us stop thinking of things that don’t matter and focus on the present. “We view these images as inferred fiction, not realized and therefore unreal,” US author Nicci Gerrard told The New York Times. “We think of our younger selves, because in one sense that’s who we are. Our younger stories are all still part of us, while our older selves don’t yet exist.” However, not everyone can laugh at their older selves. For some, aging is terrifying and it’s hard to accept what the future holds in terms of looks and feelings. As MetroUK noted, “ FaceApp is making people into a painful crisis.”
In addition, FaceApp is facing a number of accusations regarding user privacy. When a user makes changes to a photo, it needs to be uploaded to the servers in Russia, where the company is located, then AI filters your image and sends it back to you. By using the app, you grant FaceApp the license to use, reproduce, change, adapt, and publish your image, as stated in its service agreement.
Despite the concerns over privacy, however, FaceApp does light up the Internet. It gives us the chance to take a look at our futures and perhaps let us consider how to prepare for it.
28. What can FaceApp do?
A. Tell how old users are. B. Help users contact celebrities.
C. Test users’ imagination. D. Show users’ images in old age.
29. Which of the following can replace the underlined words in Paragraph 2?
A. Caused trouble. B. Became popular. C. Led to doubts. D. Got updated.
30. Which opinion may Nicci Gerrard agree with?
A. It’s unnecessary now for us to consider old age.
B. We should make full preparations for old age.
C. Our young stories deserve to be remembered.
D. It’s a good idea for us to stop using FaceApp.
31. What does Paragraph 4 mainly talk about?
A. What punishment FaceApp is faced with.
B. How FaceApp gets users’ privacy involved.
C. How well FaceApp company serves users.
D. What FaceApp service agreement contains.

Batman may not have any superpowers, but his inspiration certainly does.
More than 1,400 bat species live around the world, except in Antarctica and a few remote islands. Over their 50 million years of evolution, bats have developed clever solutions to life’s challenges, from a built-in sonar (声呐) system for finding food to fast, flexible wings that produce the fastest level-flight speed of any animal on Earth.
“There is still a lot to learn, but it is clear that bats really do have superpowers,” says Rodrigo Medellín, an ecologist. “Bats are showing us how to live a better life, for instance, by serving as models for healthy living and long lives.”
As a general rule in biology, smaller animals have shorter lives than larger ones. But bats are rule breakers: they’re the longest-lived mammals relative to their body size. Recently, scientists looked inside bats’ cells for the secrets to their exceptionally long lives. They focused on telomeres (端粒), which are the protective structures found at the ends of chromosomes (染色体). In most animals, telomeres tend to get shorter with age. But the telomeres of the longest-lived group of bats, Myotis, do not appear to shrink with age. Understanding why bats live so long may help humans live longer one day.
In addition to living longer, bats remain healthy throughout their lives, with very low risk of developing cancer. Furthermore, bats can carry deadly viruses without getting sick. So further research into their unique immune systems may actually give insight into how people can live with viruses and not get sick.
Beyond their own abilities, bats also support many other parts of their ecosystems. Three out of every four bat species eat insects. Many are pests that cause damage to important agricultural crops, such as cotton. Scientists estimate that insect-eating bats may save U.S. farmers about 1 billion per year. In addition, many bat species help improve plant health and diversity.
“Bats are unsung heroes of biodiversity,” says Medellín. “It’s time we appreciated them.”
32.What can be learned about bats from the text?
A.They fly the fastest of all land animals.
B.They live mainly on the islands of Antarctica.
C.They are at low risk of falling sick with a virus.
D.They are the longest-lived animals given their size.
33.What did scientists recently find?
A.Animals’ telomeres rarely shrink with age.
B.More research into bat telomeres could help people live more healthily.
C.Smaller animals usually live shorter lives than larger ones.
D.Myotis’s telomeres do not shorten as they age.
34.What is the author’s intention in writing the last paragraph but one?
A.To highlight the importance of bats to the ecosystem.
B.To call on people to protect bats.
C.To explain how bats benefit the farmers.
D.To show what bats feed on.
35.What would be a suitable title for this text?
A.Bats Offer Clues to Treating Diseases
B.Why Bats Are Superheroes of the Animal World
C.Scientists Unlock the Secrets to Long Lives
D.How Bats Deal with Life’s Challenges

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
There have been several incidents in recent years where people died because of unsafe crowd conditions and stampedes (人群的蜂拥), the latest one unfolding in Seoul, South Korea, with at least 155 deaths reported. This may leave some people thinking there’s little you can do to survive a stampede. 36 . But crowd-safety experts say there are several strategies that could help you avoid a potentially deadly outcome. Consider these steps below:
The key to staying safe in a crowd begins as soon as you arrive at the location, says Randy Atlas, a safety consultant based in Fort Lauderdale. 37 . It’s a piece of commonsense advice that Atlas applies not just at big events, but even when entering almost any room.
If there’s a sudden panic and crowds begin to push in a certain direction, your instinct(本能) may be to fight back and push the opposite way. 38 . If you go against the flow, you increase your chances of getting tripped and knocked down. Another risk, according to experts: If you fight the crowd, you will tire yourself out quickly in a situation where energy is needed.
As you move forward with the crowd, it’s best to move in a diagonal(对角线的) direction so you can potentially angle your way out of the situation. The goal is to get to the edge of the stampede where it’s less likely that you’ll end up stuck at a choke-point, like a doorway.
39 . Look for a solid structure to stand behind such as a pillar or a wall. Other places to duck: behind a car or even a lamp post.
In many stampede events, people die simply because they are crushed to the point they can’t breathe. But a possible way to avoid this is to place your arms in front of you, almost in a boxer-like position. That could give you some very valuable breathing room — literally. 40 .
A. Namely, he advises people to take note of where the nearest exits are.
B. Another potential way is to shelter yourself.
C. In this case, you don’t necessarily have to wait and let time slip by.
D. But that could be a big mistake, Atlas warns.
E. Indeed, it’s a frightening situation and circumstances may make it impossible to escape.
F. Other events, such as a Halloween gathering, are likely to turn deadly.
G. It’s a simple pose, but surprisingly effective and possibly life-saving.
