Elf School
In Iceland there are a lot of stories about elves. According to the school there are different types of elves that have a variety of uses. Each year on October 15, Global Handwashing Day is observed to strengthen the health awareness and prevent the spread of infectious diseases. And a hand—shaped robot called “Pepe”, which encourages kids to wash their hands, has helped pupils at a remote Indian primary school to develop habits of personal hygiene (卫生).
Pepe was fixed on the wall above a hand—washing station at Wayanad Government Primary School in Kerala, which has about 100 pupils aged 5 and 10. A small video screen behind the green plastic Pepe acted as a “mouth”, allowing researchers to tele—operate the robot to speak to the pupils and draw their attention to the poster outlining the steps of effective hand—washing. A set of moving “eyes” helped Pepe pay attention to the children’s actions.
The robot helped pupils wash their hands more effectively, increasing their rates of hand—washing by 40 percent. Pupils spent twice as long washing their hands after Pepe’s arrival. And more than 95% of the students could correctly determine when hand—washing with soap has to be done—before a meal and after a visit to the toilet.
Hand—washing is one of the most effective ways against the spread of diarrhea and respiratory infections. Dr. Amol Deshmukh, from the University of Glasgow’s School of Computing Science, led the project in partnership with colleagues from Amrita University. He said, “We were delighted by the success of Pepe’s visit to this primary school. The children were excited to interact with this relatively simple machine, which was clearly good for keeping their hands clean. Dr. Bhavani from Amrita University said,” AMMACHI (Amrita Multi Modal Application and Computer Human Interaction) Labs have taken multi plans to address common challenges facing low—income rural communities in India and worldwide using technology.”
8. Why was “Pepe” fixed at the Primary School?
A. To watch on pupil’ actions. B. To wash children’s hands.
C. To freshen the environment. D. To develop children’s health habits.
9. How did the robot bring changes to the pupils?
A. By playing with pupils. B. By providing knowledge.
C. By offering pupils soap. D. By washing pupils’ hands.
10. What can you learn about Pepe’s visit to the primary school?
A. It was a failure. B. It had no effect.
C. It was a success. D. It was a waste of time.
11. What does the underlined word “address” in the last paragraph mean?
A. deal with. B. write a place on. C. make a speech to. D. speak to.

It is easy to get carried away in an argument.
While having a rational conversation with someone who has a different opinion might seem like a challenge, it is possible. One way is to approach the other person with empathy.
The Empathy Challenge is an exercise created by Zoe Chance, senior lecturer at the Yale School of Management. At Yale, Chance teaches a course called “Mastering Influence and Persuasion” where students learn to communicate more effectively.
In her blog, Chance explains that it’s important to listen to people who disagree with you. “As they explain their position, you listen for their underlying values. Finally, you look for common ground as you reflect those values back. That’s it.”
Chance first took this challenge herself before asking her students to try. As she couldn’t understand why many people chose to vote for Donald Trump, she found three Trump’s voters and spoke with them.
Through asking questions, Chance was able to empathize with them and realize they had similar feelings. One man, an Orthodox Jew, explained that he supported Trump because Trump’s daughter and son-in-law are Jewish. The next man was a Russian immigrant passionate about freedom. The third was a lawyer who believed that authenticity (真诚) was important in political leaders.
Although Chance and Chose people had different political beliefs, they were able to relate to the life values of others. And that’s the point of the exercise-to understand others as fellow human beings.
12. Which of the following does the Empathy Challenge faces on?
A. Leadership skills. B. Public speaking skills.
C. Communication skills. D. Problem solving skills.
13. What does Chance suggest people do when handling a disagreement?
A. Defend their position. B. Find common ground.
C. Reflect on their own values. D. Meet the needs of others.
14. What drove the three men to vote for Donald Tramp?
A. Their life values. B. Their career history.
C. Their family background. D. Their childhood experience.
15. What’s the best title for the passage?
A. Respect different perspectives B. Zoe Chance’s empathy
C. Vote for Trump D. Chancels challenge
C 13. B 14. A 15. A

根据倒数第二段“One man, an Orthodox Jew, explained that he supported Trump because Trump’s daughter and son-in-law are Jewish. The next man was a Russian immigrant passionate about freedom. The third was a lawyer who believed that authenticity(真诚) was important in political leaders.(一名正统犹太人解释说,他支持Trump是因为Trump的女儿和女婿是犹太人。下一个人是一个热爱自由的俄罗斯移民。第三位是一位律师,他认为真实对政治领导人来说很重要)”以及最后一段“Although Chance and Chose people had different political beliefs, they were able to relate to the life values of others.(虽然Chance和Chose的政治信仰不同,但他们都能认同他人的人生价值观)”可推知,三个人投票给Donald Trump是因为他们的人生价值观。故选A。

The Problem with Online Returns
Online shopping is booming: In 2020, Americans spent $ 813 billion online, a 42% increase over 2019. This year, experts expect that figure to top $ 1 trillion for the first time. But millions of those purchases will eventually get sent back. ___16___ Here’s what you need to know.
When shoppers can’t physically examine products before purchase, they’re more likely to buy clothes that don’t fit or items that don’t suit their needs. People return on average about 25% of what they buy online, compared with 8% of what they buy in stores. However, many items that get returned never go back on sale. ___17___ About 5 billion pounds of returned goods went to landfills each year, according to logistics(物流)company Optoro.
___18___ When you send a product back, companies already owe you a refund, and it would cost them even more to ship it to a sorting facility and have someone evaluate whether it can be sold again. At this stage, every person that touches that item is adding cost, but the company doesn’t earn any value.
Although it’s unlikely that returned items will be sold as new, some items get sent to discount stores. ___19___ Other unwanted items might be sent overseas-although many could still go to the garbage eventually.
In some cases, giant companies like Amazon and Target have begun telling customers to just keep their unwanted items rather than send them back. Third-party logistics businesses have also popped up to help clean up the return process. But that’s not enough on its own. ___20___ If we continue to shop without thinking about the environmental impacts of our decisions, we’ll ultimately have very unsustainable supply chains.
A. It sounds shocking, but it all boils down to cost.
B. The responsibility falls on us consumers as well.
C. Those returns can have a big environmental impact.
D. Things like electronics could get separated into parts.
E. That increase has accelerated rapidly during the pandemic.
F. Instead, they’re often thrown out, even if they’re still brand-new.
G. In response France forbade the destruction of unsold consumer goods.
C 17. F 18. A 19. D 20. B

根据上文“But millions of those purchases will eventually get sent back.”(但数百万美元的购买最终将被退回)及下文“Here’s what you need to know.”(这里你需要了解以下几点。)
根据上文“However, many items that get returned never go back on sale.”(然而,许多被退回的物品永远不会重新销售)和下文“About 5 billion pounds of returned goods went to landfills each year, according to logistics(物流)company Optoro”(根据物流公司Optoro的数据,每年约有50亿英镑的退货进入垃圾填埋场),我可知设空部分应该讲的是这些退回物品会如何处理。
根据下文“When you send a product back, companies already owe you a refund, and it would cost them even more to ship it to a sorting facility and have someone evaluate whether it can be sold again.”(当你退回一件产品时,公司已经欠你一笔退款,如果他们把产品运到分拣设施并让人评估是否可以再次销售,成本会更高。)
根据下文“Other unwanted items might be sent overseas-although many could still go to the garbage eventually.”(其他不需要的物品可能会被送到海外——尽管许多物品最终仍然会被扔进垃圾桶。)
根据上文“Third-party logistics businesses have also popped up to help clean up the return process. But that’s not enough on its own.”(第三方物流企业也纷纷出现,以帮助清理退货流程。 以及下文“If we continue to shop without thinking about the environmental impacts of our decisions, we’ll ultimately have very unsustainable supply chains.”(如果我们继续购物,而不考虑我们的决定对环境的影响,我们最终将拥有不可持续发展的供应链。)

The advantages and disadvantages of online education
Since the outbreak of COVID-19, many schools have adopted online teaching methods. However, the attitudes towards it vary from person to person.
On the one hand, online education provides us with a good source of information. It also enables students to study at their own pace, which helps them save time and have a better understanding of what they learn.
On the other hand, high school students may lack the self-discipline to keep up with the workload in online classes. Besides, with too much time spent online, their eyesight may be damaged. What’s worse, it’s hard for them to solve problems in their studies for lack of face-to-face communication with teachers.
Personally, online education is very important, especially at present, but we must use it wisely.
